it has been another excellent year at the national motorsport academy; we are very excited to celebrate another graduation. on behalf of everyone that has been, and still is, a part of the national motorsport academy, we would like to raise a glass and toast “our students.�
The NMA now deliver programmes to more than 200 students and our commitment gaining knowledge and bettering ourselves remains. Since the concept of a brand new Academy sparked back in 2015, we have strived to deliver excellent education, a rewarding student journey, and superb feedback and interaction. That we can achieve all this within a competitive financial framework means our students get what can undoubtedly be a superior experience. Over a year in the making and the culmination of a continuous and rigorous development process, the online BSc and FdSc in Motorsport Engineering were launched as UK, if not world, firsts. They remain unchallenged today. Now, with the addition of a brand new online MSc programme for 2019 we can boast the delivery a full suite of Motorsport Engineering degree qualifications. So, whether students are looking to study from level 4 to 7, we have a course to suit.
All our students are working in the automotive and motorsport sectors with mainstream manufacturers, suppliers and race teams. We can currently claim every major FIA championship, every MSA championship and a plethora of national and overseas series. In fact, the NMA has students studying in over 30 countries. Some students graduating today have been part of our race winning GT Cup team. The 2018/19 cohort should be particularly proud to add a championship win to their CV’, after the NMA race team won overall honours in the GT Cup GTO class championship in the Mosler MT900R.
The level of work produced by students and the shear dedication by both students and tutors to the programme means we can boast a massive 63% of students gaining a first-class grade in their modules, whilst 79% of all students have gained an upper second-class mark or above as their overall Degree classification. With the introduction of the Masters programme for 2019 and the newly built Evora GTE concept, we are continuously improving the Academy’s programmes, resources and structure making online learning accessible to all abilities and levels across the Motorsport Industry. It has been an exceptional 4 years from concept to bring us all here today. We are looking forward many more successes during 2019 and beyond.

I’m continually blown away by the standard of work and overall enthusiasm that I see from you all and you should be feeling very proud of yourselves today. roger grimshaw Motorsport Tutor I cannot believe that today has arrived - it has been a long road for some and a shorter one for others, but for all NMA GRADUATES (I can say that now!) I want to let you know how proud I am that you have made the grade. andy napier Since 2008 when he first started racing, Andy has combined his passion for Motorsport and unquenchable interest in engineering to take an accelerated arc from novice racer to multiple championship, series and class winner, team owner and professional coach/instructor.
Seeking to formalise his accumulated experiences, in 2016 Andy embarked on an engineering degree with the National Motorsport Academy where he has achieved a distinction at the 2nd year FdSc point with an overall course grade of 91%. Andy hopes to graduate with a First at BSc level and subsequently transition into a management role, which will synergise his 20+ years in Software Testing with his multidisciplined Motorsport experience and skills.

james poier After achieving a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, James landed in the Seattle area working as an aerospace structural analysis engineer. With over 7 years of structural engineering experience, focuses included customer fleet repair analysis and approval, antenna design, and fuselage material coatings.
Away from the desk, James was an avid sim racer, autocrosser, trackday enthusiast, and endurance racing spectator, which scratched his proverbial motorsport itch. This eventually led to the decision to pursue motorsport as a career and the NMA FdSc programme. James’ desire is to someday achieve a full-time engineering role with an endurance racing team.

edward sarling From childhood, Edward had always been interested in cars, bikes, engines and the motor racing world in general. After leaving school in 1995, he went straight to college studying carpentry and joinery, which he has worked in for the past 24 years. Following an injury to his wrist and subsequent operations, it made his current job in construction hard to maintain, so it seemed like an ideal time for a change.
Shortly after self-funding a course on dynamometers and ECU mapping, which was only originally intended to be for personal gain, he was at the Goodwood Festival of Speed where he met Kieran and Wayne from the National Motorsport Academy. Remembering how much he had enjoyed the dynamometer course, Edward decided to push the boundaries of what he felt he could achieve, applied the next week and began the journey to his new career.
Having not done anything academic since school, he was not only having to learn motor engineering but also how to produce assignments to a degree level English standard. This has led to him being proficient in Word and Excel, which he had minimal experience with previously, not to mention the 3D modelling, aerodynamics, engine simulation, and stress analysis software used throughout the course. Edward now feels he has gone beyond even what he thought he was capable of. There is not currently any specific role that he is wanting to pursue, but as he learns more and moves forward, he is excited by the possibilities that might offer themselves to him in his new career.

daniel galley Daniel had his first hands-on experience with Motorsport in his mid-teens, when a mate of his was competing in off-roading events with a Bob Tailed 3.5 V8 Range Rover Classic. It was through this experience that he decided upon trying to make a job out of his hobby.
Fast forward to 2013, when Daniel started a Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Motorsport Engineering and started working with Kevin Riley and his Mosler on a voluntary basis. His hard work and commitment landed him a placement year working for the National Motorsport Academy (NMA). This led to an offer of a full time position as race engineer and the opportunity to continue his studies by topping up his FdSc to a full BSc (Hons) in Motorsport Engineering. This year is his sixth season working in the GT- Cup with the NMA’s GT Cars.

simone marmorini When Simone was young, he learned to ride a motorbike before a bicycle and always wanted to be involved in the motorsport competition world! He had the chance to work with Coloni Motorsport who offered him the opportunity to train young drivers at the simulator and follow them on track. He taught them tracks, driving techniques and especially the first steps on understanding driver telemetry. Simone has since been specialising more and more on the car side where he has been learning from expert race engineers.
He is currently working with a couple of Motorsport teams as a race engineer and this season has been promoted to team manager in the ELMS and as On-Event Organiser in the BOSS GP Championship. Being involved directly in motorsport made it very difficult for him to enrol again. Thanks to the NMA, Simone was able to finish off his degree in engineering and take his career further in the motorsports world.

yoshiki ohmura Yoshiki received his first degree, a B.A. in Economics from Northwestern University (USA) in 1998 and has absorbed various post graduate courses in quantitative finance and applied statistics.
Yoshi Ohmura has been active in motorsports for over 20 years, having started as a driver in single seaters, racing in Formula Ford, Renault and Abarth, before switching to racing in GT and LMP cars. As Team Principal he developed the racing activities for StileF Squadra Corse, the San Marino based Ferrari team campaigning cars in the GT1, GT2 and GT3 class as well as the Ferrari one-make championship (Ferrari Challenge), where the team won both the European and World-championship.

master’s degree
In January 2019, the National Motorsport Academy launched the world’s first online Master’s Degree (MSc) in Advanced Motorsport Engineering. The MSc focusses on leading edge technologies surrounding lean burn, thermal manipulation for aerodynamic devices, driver coaching, advanced vehicle dynamics and race strategy. This unique post-graduate course provides an excellent progression routes to our own NMA degree graduates, as well as the opportunity for direct entry to those who have achieved a related degree elsewhere and/or who are already industry based and wishing to develop their career further.
what are the entry requirements? Entry is by an Honours degree in a relevant Engineering discipline or by interview if an applicant has several years’ experience working in a high-level engineering role in Motorsport.
how is it different to other masters degrees? Unlike any other Motorsport Degree, this Master’s degree is studied online. Therefore, all students can remain working full time whilst studying this course part time. There are no semesters or start dates so students can start their course from any date that suits them. The online programme is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A personal tutor is allocated to each student & can be contacted via phone, email or Skype allowing students 1:1 tuition whenever they need assistance. Just as there is in the online BSc (Hons) programme there will be contributions from world experts in the motorsport industry included throughout the course.

Final Year Project
The course includes two academic and wider skills modules based on project management and business management skills. These will expose students to the processes and knowledge associated with the development of projects and day to day management duties within race teams. The remaining six taught modules are the technical, mechanical engineering and motorsport industry modules. Students will be taught advanced vehicle dynamics and race vehicle behaviour. From the mathematical calculations and understanding of the algorithms to applying these to mathematical models and simulations that enable the development of race strategies, race car set-up and race vehicle development paths. The programme also contains thermal and multi-species analysis of race vehicles. This will allow students to explore the capabilities of thermodynamic manipulation to improve aerodynamics packages for race vehicles. They can also apply lean burn technologies within high performance internal combustion engines to study fuel efficiency and power development.
Students will also study driver coaching and analysis using driving simulators, data analysis, video analysis and coaching techniques. This will allow the student to become an engineer who both understands the race car limits and can set up various possibilities and driver improvements. This module will also ensure students develop the skills necessary to find those tenths that lie within the race driver’s technique via rigorous critical analysis of data and video. Finally, students will conclude their studies with a projectbased dissertation. They will have the chance to showcase their knowledge and skills by choosing the content and development path in order to fully explore the research area that they have chosen as their career. Throughout the course there are contributions from world experts in the motorsport industry, just as there are in the BSc (Hons) online degree.
