The Third Place: “The Food Campus is meant to insert the notion of the ‘Third Place” into people’s lives, which now typically consists of work and home. The Third Place would be a community space that is able to relieve people of their duties at home or at work and successfully immerse them into a happy community environment.

Project Description: The NDC will propose design strategies for three sites located in Southside Columbus on Parsons Avenue. 1. Food Hub 2. Food Forest 3. Pop-up Container Yard Site one, the Food Hub, will include a kitchen, production, education, and retail building. The second site will be a Food Forest, which is a semi-dense edible garden. The third site is a Pop-up Space, which holds shipping containers and possesses the ability to host festivals as well as community activities.

Strategies • Retail space and the building’s connection to pedestrians is maximized • The building envelope is stretched to the maximum, in particular, the front edge along Parsons Avenue. • The design contains moments of permeability, such as the cut-through in the first floor creates a walkway to the rear. • Greenhouses are placed at the end of the building cut-through towards the food forest.

Strategies • Stormwater management based. • Mounds provide sight of vegetation from a distance. • Mounds move water. • Dentention basin: excess water drains inwardly and helps life grow under wooden boardwalk. • Outer mounds drain water out of site. • Clean circulation to thresholds.

THE MEANDERING DESIGN Strategies
24
• The design includes big and small gathering spaces. • Circulation incorporates strong perpendicular paths with organic/meandering paths through garden spaces. • Large trees are pushed to the exterior, creating a border for the site as well as giving privacy to the site. • The natural/meandering paths present a more trail-like, forest approach to the food forest.
