PROJECT DESCRIPTION: THE NDC WILL PROPOSE DESIGN STRATEGIES FOR THREE SITES LOCATED IN SOUTHSIDE COLUMBUS ON PARSONS AVENUE. ONE SITE WILL INCLUDE A KITCHEN/PRODUCTION/EDUCATION/ RETAIL BUILDING. THE SECOND SITE WILL BE A FOOD FOREST. THE THIRD SITE IS A FLEX-SPACE, CONTAINING SHIPPING CONTAINERS AND IS ABLE TO HOLD FESTIVALS AS WELL AS COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES. “THE THIRD PLACE”: THE FOOD CAMPUS IS MEANT TO INSERT THE NOTION OF ‘THE THIRD PLACE’ INTO PEOPLE’S LIVES, WHICH NOW TYPICALLY CONSIST WORK AND HOME. THE THIRD PLACE WOULD BE A COMMUNITY SPACE THAT IS ABLE TO RELIEVE PEOPLE OF THEIR HOME/WORK DUTIES AND IMMERSE THEMSELVES WITHIN THEIR COMMUNITY.

SCHEME ONE CONSISTS OF A MORE ORTHAGONAL DESIGN. TAKING CHARACTERISTICS FROM THE NEIGHBORING MALONEY CENTER, THE FIRST FLOOR SUCEEDS FROM THE RECTANGULAR BOUNDARY OF THE BUILDING, CONTINUING THE COURTYARD THAT THE MALONEY CENTER IMPOSES. THE FIRST FLOOR IS INTERSECTED BY A COURTYARD THAT LENDS ITSELF TO BECOME INHABITABLE SPACE FOR THE POP-UP RESTAURANT. THIS COURTYARD SEPERATES TWO VERY DIFFERENT PROGRAMMATIC TYPES, WHICH WOULD BE THE RETAIL AND VISITOR CENTER FROM KITCHENS, SHIPPING AND RECEIVING, AND RESTAURANT. THE SECOND FLOOR ALSO USES THE IDEA OF SETTING THE BUILDING BACK FROM THE BOUNDARY, BUT IS UTILIZED IN ANOTHER WAY BY THEN MAKING THESE SPACES ROOF TERRACES AND GARDENS. CENTRALLY LOCATED ON THE SECOND FLOOR IS A LARGE SQUARE FOOTAGE OF ATRIUM SPACE, WHICH OPENS UP THE SPACE AS WELL AS PRESENTS THE OPPORTUNITY FOR THE FIRST FLOOR TO HAVE DOUBLE HEIGHT SPACES. THE DESIGN IS BASICALLY A RECTANGULAR BLOCK THAT BECOMES CARVED AWAY ON BOTH THE EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR, THEREFORE REMAINING EFFICIENT AS WELL AS OPEN.

SCHEME TWO INCORPORATES THE IDEA OF A PROCESSION TO A DESTINATION. THE BUILDING’S MAIN ENTRANCE IS A COVERED SPACE WHERE THE SECOND FLOOR CANTILEVERS TO PRODUCE AN OUTDOOR ROOM OF SORTS. ONCE ITS ENTERED, THE OCCUPANT PASSES UNDER AN OPEN AND BRIGHT ATRIUM SPACE THEN CONTINUES TO THE STAIRS. THE STAIRS WRAP NINETY DEGREES, ORIENTING THE PERSON TO NOW FACE IN THE DIRECTION OF PARSONS, MORE SPECIFICALLY, THE POP UP SPACE SITE. THE TOP OF THE STAIRS IS MET BY THE OPEN ATRIUM SPACE. IF FOLLOWING THE HALLWAY, THE OCCUPANT IS NOW DIRECTLY FACING IN THE DIRECTION OF THE MALONEY’S FOOD FOREST. THIS FINAL SPACE IS LARGELY TRANSPARENT, LINKING THE FOOD FOREST SITE TO THE BUILDING VIA THE OPEN LOUNGE SPACE. THE BASIC IDEA OF THE BUILDING IS THE VALUE OF ITS CIRCULATION, BECAUSE DUE TO ITS PHYSICAL WRAPPING ONTO ITSELF, IT PURPOSELY ORIENTS THE OCCUPANTS TOWARD BOTH THE SITES. IT ALSO DIRECTLY ACKNOWELDGES THE REST OF THE FOOD CAMPUS FROM THE EXTERIOR DUE TO THE TWISTING ORIENTATION OF ITS FACADES. WHEN THE BUILDING WRAPS ONTO ITSELF, THE NOW EASILY ACCESSIBLE ROOF OF THE FIRST FLOOR TURNS INTO A ROOF TERRACE/GARDEN.
