Plant Pride on Parsons
Plant Pride on Parsons (PPOP) is an award-winning community partnership dedicated to the cleaning and greening of Parsons Avenue, the gateway to the City’s South Side. The initial effort began in 2009 and includes abatement of litter, graffiti and commercial storefront facelifts. The centerpiece of PPOP is a streetscape beautification initiative consisting of 126 hand-painted flower pots stretching two and one half miles along the Avenue. One hundred and twentythree containers carry unique designs created by decorative artists from The Heart of Ohio Tole Painters (HOOT). Three planters are creations by area art students from Parsons Elementary, Stewart Elementary and South High School. Each flower pot is sponsored by area patrons for $150.00. Plant Pride on Parsons was selected as 2010 Neighborhood Improvement Project of the Year by The Franklin Park Conservatory/Scotts Miracle Gro “Growing to Green Program” and 1st Place in Beautification/Government Category by national nonprofit Keep America Beautiful. PPOP is solely funded by grants, corporate donations and individual fundraising projects. Major partners include, City of Columbus/Keep Columbus Beautiful, Parsons Avenue Merchants Association, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, South Side Neighborhood Pride Center, Columbus South Side Area Commission, South Side Area Civic Associations, United Way of Central Ohio, The Columbus Foundation, Greater Columbus Arts Council, Keep America Beautiful/Lowes/Valvoline and the Neighborhood Design Center.

Creating a 2-mile greenspace was the first step in beautifying historic Parsons Avenue. Today, you can stroll among a botanical art gallery where fresh blooms and shrubs change every season. The old historic neighborhoods attract visitors to summer garden tours and holiday lighting festivals. New businesses, restaurants, new housing and health facilities are joining the mix of furniture, re-sale and vintage auto dealers creating an eclectic and bustling South Side corridor.
