Welcome & Contents
Welcome to this year’s Love Christmas! IT’S that time of year again!
Proof a pair of shoes can change your life!
This is my first Christmas in North Devon, and it’s been eye-opening compiling the details of what’s on in each area. Our region is truly spoiled for choice when it comes to things to do over the festive period. If illuminations, fireworks and Christmas markets are your thing, see pages 11 to 20 for all you need to know about Christmas in your local area. If you want to make the most of the crisp winter days, we’ve got plenty of ideas for getting out and about on pages 4 to 7. Want to pamper yourself or someone you love? North Devon’s best hair and beauty businesses have their tips for looking great over Christmas on page 20. But without a doubt, my favourite part of Christmas is the food. Turn to pages 21 to 27 for the finest festive feasting in North Devon. Yule love it!
From everyone here at the Journal, have a very merry Christmas.

Tara Stanbury, partner at The Milky Way, said: “One really popular idea is to put your little ones’ hand prints onto a bauble. It creates a lovely, personal decoration that is bound to take pride of place on the tree for years to come.” She continued: “This year we’re also excited that local primary schools and groups will be coming along on se-
lected days to treat our guests to some Christmas Carols. Details are being finalised at the moment but will be available on our website www.themilky way.co.uk nearer the time.” In addition to the extra festive fun, there’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained at this multi award winning attraction this Christmas including the dodgems, Clone Zone, train ride, rollercoasters and Timewarp play area. Younger children will particularly love the innovative Little Stars play centre, with its space themed soft play, sensory room for babies, dressing-up and role play pizzeria. If you haven’t visited The Milky Way in the winter for a while, you might not know that there’s now a new restaurant serving healthy options, in addition to popular family food. What’s more, with environmentally friendly heating added to parts of the park last year and more being added in the coming months, The Milky Way really is a great day out for the whole family this winter.

ILFRACOMBE’S festive fun kicks off on Wednesday, November 25 with the Lighting of the Lights on the high street. The streets will echo with Christmas carols, while there will be entertainment at the war memorial, as well as the children’s procession. This year, the Christmas lights were due to be switched on by representatives from Chivenor 22 Squadron, but they were forced to withdraw after being unable to arrange for crew members to attend. After many nominations, a replacement was found in the cast of Small Pond's local production of Oliver!. Marnie Quy, of Events4Ilfracombe, said: “The cast of Oliver! were nominated several times and we are very pleased to announce that they will be turning the lights on for us this year. “We are also hoping that we can twist their arm to perform something on the night as well.” The switch-on will be followed by an open top bus parade with Santa in his sleigh. There will be stalls, entertainment and late night Christmas shopping. The fun continues on Sunday, November 29, at the harbour where the Christmas drawing competition will be judged. Three age groups will be awarded prizes: up to 10 years, 10-16 years, and 16 to

adult. Any media is allowed, but no photos. Entries should be handed in at St James Dairy by 2pm on Saturday, November 28. Judging will take place at Pip & Jim’s Community Hall on November 29, where there will also be a table top sale, and Father Christmas will be making an appearance. The event will run from 1pm to 5pm. “We are hoping to attract loads of people as we have not done the competition for a while,” said June Williams, organiser. “We ran the event a few years ago and it was very successful, so this year we are opening it up to adults too. “We are asking everyone with artistic tendencies to have a go at drawing a lovely harbour Christmas scene.” Then, take a wander from the harbour to the everpopular Fore Street Christmas Market. Expect stalls selling a wide range of gifts and crafts as well as sideshows and street entertainment – and you might even spot Father Christmas. Hear sea shanties, carols and the sounds of local musicians as you walk along the street. Shops, restaurants and hotels in the street will be open and you can even pick up a Christmas tree. The event runs from 3pm to 7pm and will begin with the ceremonial lighting of the Fore Street lights. Organiser Jenny Coslett said: “There’s a big craft element this year, as well as a good variety of musicians. “We hope to have a street food area, plus restaurants and cafes will be there, too. There’s something for everyone!” “Last year was so bustling and we hope this year is the same,” she added.

First Christmas Market will raise funds for charity CHRISTMAS will come early to Braunton this year, in the form of the inaugural North Devon Christmas Market. The event, on Friday, December 4, will see Caen Street car park and the Village Green turned into a winter wonderland to raise money for North Devon District Hospital's Over and Above charity, to support the Seamoor Chemotherapy Unit and Special Care Baby Unit. More than 60 stalls will sell their wares – perfect for picking up a unique Christmas present – while a stage with live music will entertain the crowds. Those who love singing can join in with the Christmas carols in St Brannock’s Church, and children can play on rides, a bouncy castle and even visit Santa in his grotto, or catch a glimpse of Elsa and Anna from Frozen.
A hog roast, a pizza stall, a barbecue and a bar selling real ales and mulled wine will refresh shoppers, while many local shops will stay open too – some until 9pm. Neil Hampson, organiser of the event, said: “The market started off as a Facebook event and 800 people said they were attending in the first week. “Now more than 3,000 people say they will be attending. “We’ve even had to turn vendors away because of the popularity.” Neil was originally concerned about parking for the event, but thanks to the generosity of the community, he has found a solution. “The manager of Tesco is letting shoppers
park for free at the supermarket, and we will light the Tarka Trail leading to the market,” he said. Shoppers will also have the chance to win a gift in the prize draw, including a pamper day at the Woolacombe Bay Hotel, a food processor, a beer tasting experience or surf equipment. Tickets will be on sale on the night. The first North Devon Christmas Market, sponsored by Marsdens, will begin at 6pm. Visit the Facebook page for more information.
Give the gift of time, relaxation and healing this Christmas... Give your loved one the blissful experience they would really love this year – a treatment or floatation voucher from Hands On Clinic in Braunton. “Floatation offers the deepest relaxation known to man.”

South Molton comes to light with two illuminating events
Magical moments at Fatstock and Winter Wonderland events
SOUTH Molton will be transformed into a winter wonderland this Christmas, with a full programme of seasonal events for you to enjoy. The magic begins on Friday, November 27 with the Christmas lights switch-on. BBC Radio Devon will be broadcasting a special show from South Molton between 5pm and 7pm, while in the Pannier Market, there will be a Christmas gift fair with a blow-up pub and an Indian restaurant. There will be live music from acoustic duo Bicycle Repair
IT’S not just Christmas lights that will be bringing festive cheer to South Molton. The ever-popular Winter Wonderland takes place on Friday, December 4 and Saturday, December 5. The fun will begin with a lantern parade by local children, starting at the Infants School at 6pm. The parade will be led by Blackdown Samba Band down to the square where carols will be sung by four local schools. They will accompanied by South Molton Town Band, while Tarka Pipes and Blackdown Samba will play later. Enjoy the traditional carousel and funfair rides or pop into
Man in the town square from 5.30pm to 6.15pm. The Christmas lights will be switched on by BBC radio DJ Simon Bates, South Molton Mayor David Goodman and MP Peter Heaton-Jones, at 6.15pm. Then, it will be time to wander down to the central car park to enjoy music from Sam Dowden, until a magnificent fireworks display makes sure the night finishes with a bang. Andrew Coates, town clerk, said: “I am hoping it’s going to be a fantastic event.” On Thursday, December 3,
the Christmas Tree Festival begins in St Mary Magdalene Church and runs until Monday, December 7. More than 60 Christmas trees, decorated by local schools, groups and businesses, will create a sparkling spectacle of colour and light. Step inside the church for a few moments, away from the bustle of the town centre, and savour some timeless Christmas magic. There will be organ music, choirs and refreshments. Disabled access is available.

Santa’s Grotto. Shops and cafes will be open for late night shopping, and more than sixty local traders will sell their wares in the Pannier Market. More treats can be found in the Assembly Rooms with the Christmas gift fair Upstairs@Winter Wonderland. On Saturday, traders will be joined by Anna and Elsa from Frozen. There will be fun for all the family on Sunday, December 6 at the annual Christmas Fatstock Show in the Pannier Market. As well as a range of classes for livestock and poultry, there will be produce, crafts, and demonstrations including thatching and wood

turning, as well as a vintage tractor display. The Children’s Corner will provide entertainment for kids, while the event – from 9.30am to 5pm – will raise money for the Devon Air Ambulance Trust. But the fun doesn’t stop there. Younger visitors might like to keep an eye open for Olaf the snowman, from Frozen, who will be hiding in the town centre’s shops. Fill in an entry form, noting where you have seen Olaf, and drop it into John Walker Insurance for the chance to win a prize.

Many of Bideford’s shops will open late, and there will be more than 100 craft stalls around the town.
