It’s birthday time! Every year we focus our July issues on birthday parties. This month we searched for a few ideas for parties that a) were creative and fun and b) wouldn’t break the bank. And, boy did we find them! Thanks to a few helpful members of our Facebook group (special shout out to Nicole LeMay) we found five really great birthday ideas that serve as the backdrop for an awesome celebration. Turn to page 40 for all the details. You’ll also want to read Kerri McLoughlin’s article on birthday traditions on page 44-45. She has so many great ideas to make your birthday child feel special on their day. My favorite idea is the birthday book. All it takes is buying a special book each year and writing a little bit about your child’s year inside. Can you imagine how cool it would be as an adult to have a selection of birthday books from your parents? It’s a great tradition for grandparents to consider as well. Our big contest this month is a birthay giveaway of over $1800 in birthday parties. A huge thank you to contest sponsors: Coral Cay Adventure Golf, Fort Myers Miracle, Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples and Wooten’s Everglades Airboats. To enter, check the information on page 39 and then head to our website at neafamily.com. The drawings for prizes will be held on July 27. Linda Denning has contributed an important article this month on pages 16-17. Shorebirds 101 is filled with information that you may not know about the birds we share our beaches with. I’ve looked on more than a few times while a child ran squealing through a flock of birds–I had no idea how damaging that really is! Please, read her article and then share it with your children. We’ve listened to the feedback from readers and started a “Family Meals” column. In the future, you’ll find recipes, tips on food preparation, restaurants to try and anything related to food and your family. We’re starting with tips on meal planning from Lara Krupicka on pages 14-15. Don’t forget that the 2015 Back to School Expo will be held Saturday, August 8 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. We’re still accepting vendor applications but we’re getting close to maximum capacity so if your business or organization is interested, contact me today for details. You can also drop by our website at neafamily.com for more information and to download a copy of the contract. Have a wonderful July!

HAPPY, HEALTHY FAMILY

By Malia Jacobson

No-drama discipline

Get kids to cooperate without losing your cool

G

ot a grabby toddler, a mouthy grade-schooler, or a defiant teen? Time for some loving discipline. But take note; modern kids require a new brand of parental guidance. “Unlike previous generations, children today live in a much more egalitarian world,” says Robert Ryan, LCPC, a licensed counselor in private practice in Chicago. No longer viewed as underlings to be seen and not heard, today’s children resist overly harsh punitive measures. In fact, these tactics can backfire and actually reinforce misbehavior. So what’s a parent to do? Read on for age-by-age discipline strategies that build self-worth, squelch power struggles, foster thriving relationships, and put an end to endless yelling. TODDLER & PRESCHOOL YEARS 2-5 Time in Parents of young children can find themselves dishing out “time-outs” left and right. A discipline strategy dating back to the 1950s, time-out entails removing a child from the scene of his misdeed for a period of time. It’s one of the most widespread discipline tactics around. But does it work? Often, time-out is less than effective, says Stephanie T. Jones, M.S., parenting coach with Possibility Parenting and chair of the North Carolina Parenting Education Network. That’s because parents aren’t consistent about what behavior will result in a time-out, and many only use it when they are angry. While time-out may give parents a brief break from an unruly tot, it does little to address the underlying cause of the misbehavior. A more effective strategy: look for the root cause of the behavior you’re trying to correct (often, exasperating behaviors are ploys for attention or control).

Then employ logical consequences, like taking a child home if he can’t behave appropriately at the store or park. SCHOOL YEARS 6-12 Strength training During the elementary years, misbehavior becomes more pronounced and harder to ignore; it’s no longer “cute” when your seven-year-old gets sassy. But reacting with harsh punishments can leave parents locked in a battle of wills that hurts the parentchild bond and fails to correct the misbehavior. Escaping this damaging downward spiral requires a fresh look at discipline, says Jones. “Many think of discipline in terms of punishment, but I think of it in terms of teaching, leading, and guiding. And learning is best accomplished in the context of meaningful relationships.”

Developing a strong bond increases cooperation and reduces defiance and the need for punishment; children who feel connected to the adults in their lives are more likely to comply with their requests and are generally eager to please them, notes Jones. Invest in mutually satisfying relationships with grade-schoolers by spending enjoyable time together, free of distracting screens, work email, and wireless devices. Try hiking, touch football, fishing, planning meals and cooking together, family game nights, and movie outings. TEEN YEARS 13-18 Ground game Think twice before yelling “you’re grounded!” This “big kid” form of time-out provides a Band-Aid fix, not a long-term solution, says Ryan. A grounded teen who

sits around stewing probably isn’t learning the intended lesson, he notes. That doesn’t mean teens shouldn’t experience consequences for their actions. Consequences should be tailored to the behavior parents want to correct, says Jones. Natural consequences and logical consequences foster learning and build life skills. “Natural consequences are those things that will happen without any intervention. Logical consequences are those things related to the misbehavior that parents do to help a child learn.” A natural consequence of forgetting homework is no credit. A logical consequence of neglecting to empty the dishwasher might be after-dinner dish duty for a week. Above all, parents need to establish a relationship of trust and respect with their teens, says Ryan. Laying down ironclad rules without explanation is a sure-fire way to spark dissent. “Teens react positively to respect more than almost any other style of engagement.” MALIA JACOBSON is an award-winning health and parenting journalist and mom of three. Her latest book is Sleep Tight, Every Night: Helping Toddlers and Preschoolers Sleep Well Without Tears, Tricks, or Tirades.

COLLIER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS

By Katie Tanner, Communications Specialist for CCPS

The Value of Academic Competition C

ompetition. It is a word that we usually associate with athletics. While there is no doubt team sports play an important role in a child’s development, there’s also tremendous value in academic competition. By participating in activities such as spelling bees, debate tournaments, and writing symposiums, students can learn the same sportsmanship skills as athletes do on the playing field. Character traits such as fair play, respect, and grace. Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) recognizes the importance of academic competitions and strives to provide countless opportunities for students to showcase their skills. Those include the Scholar Bowl Program, the Middle School Debate Program, and Odyssey of the Mind, just to name a few. Ashleigh Koch, Coordinator of Academic Competitions, tells me there’s something for everyone. “If your child loves to research, argue different sides of an issue, and is willing to speak in front of a small audience, they would be well-suited for debate. Creative thinkers would love Odyssey of the Mind. The Laws of Life Essay Contest challenges students to write effectively. There are so many opportunities for students to fit in and to find success.” Speaking of finding success, this past school year, we saw so many of our students shine in these competitions. Four of our LOE Primary Team (K-2) elementary school Odyssey of the at Odyssey of the Mind Mind teams made it to the state Regional Finals finals. In the words of one student at Parkside Elementary, “My expe-

East Naples Middle School wins MS debate tournament rience of working on an Odyssey of the Mind team this year was amazing. I loved how our project challenged me to use my brain and think outside the box.” Our young scientists also had one of their best showings ever at the 60th Annual State Science and Engineering Fair of Florida. Eleven of the 13 students took home awards. One student even won a $10,000 scholarship to the University of Florida. With the new school year about to start next month, Koch tells me her department is working hard to keep up the excitement surrounding the district’s academic competitions. “We are continually trying to expand our programs to include more students.” She suggests that any student looking to get involved in one of our many competitions reach out to the teacher or coach responsible at their school. Some academic competitions require tryouts, while others are open to all interested students. As always, you can get the latest information on our website: www.collierschools.com. There, you can also watch videos of some of our academic competitions from this past year. Whatever your child wishes to pursue, remember to celebrate with them along the way. Celebrate their courage to participate and the skills they develop as they prepare for the competition. That way, win or lose, you have helped them establish the spirit and desire to try it again.

COLLIER COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD UPDATE

By Erika Donalds

Curious about charter schools? I

n June, the Collier County School Board unanimously approved an application for a new K-8 public charter school, Collier Charter Academy. The item was on the board’s ‘consent agenda’, which is standard for items that are expected to pass unanimously with little to no discussion. It may seem strange for a governing body to approve the formation of an entirely new school in our county, one that is anticipated to serve over 1,100 students, with no discussion, no public comments, and, aside from some media attention, very little fanfare. I see this as a good opportunity to explain a few things about charter schools in general and clear up some misconceptions. This particular application came from Charter Schools USA, a large charter management company that operates 38 schools in Florida (including 6 in Lee County). When a company or group of citizens wishes to form a public charter school, they must submit a charter application to the county school board. The application is reviewed by a committee for adherence to very specific state requirements. The committee makes a recommendation to the school board on whether to accept or deny the application. Once accepted, the school district and charter organization move forward to agree on a Charter Contract, which governs how the new school will operate and how the district will monitor the charter’s operations and performance. Public charters are relatively new to Collier County and many of our neighbors have come from other states where charter laws vary greatly. Therefore it is understandable that some lack accurate information about Florida charter schools. First, charter schools are public schools, and are required to be organized as non-profits. They receive the same per-student state operational funding as traditional public schools, but charters do not get local property taxes for facilities and capital expenses. With charters and other “schools of choice”, both the revenues and expenses follow the child. When a parent chooses a charter school, part of the money that would have been spent to educate that student in their neighborhood school (for teachers’ salaries, books, supplies, etc.), is provided to the charter school, and the charter uses those funds to provide that student’s education. Charters often must raise private donations to

make up for the lack of capital tax dollars received by traditional public schools. Charter schools must employ certified teachers, and they administer the same statewide accountability assessments (FSA) as traditional public schools. Although charters are free to use their own curriculum, the curriculum must meet or exceed state education standards. Charter schools are also held accountable to school grades given by the Florida Department of Education. Charters are not obligated to provide transportation, although some choose to. They are required to provide free or reduced breakfast and lunch to students who qualify. If demand for a charter school exceeds capacity, the law calls for a random lottery to be conducted each school year to determine which students are accepted. Florida statutes state that charter schools must “Meet high standards of student achievement while providing parents flexibility to choose among diverse educational opportunities within the state’s public school system” and “Promote enhanced academic success and financial efficiency by aligning responsibility with accountability.” According to the Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools, 623 public charter schools served over 230,000 students in 46 of Florida’s 67 counties in 2014-2015. In Collier County, we had 5 charter schools serving approximately 1,400 students. As education choice becomes more prevalent in our state, school districts must find ways to meet the demand for alternative methods of teaching and learning. Some counties are doing this by offering specialized programs in magnet schools or within traditional public school environments. In the 2015 legislative session, we saw numerous attempts at additional charter legislation; however none of these passed before the session’s abrupt ending. Some lawmakers want to limit the growth of charter schools while others want to make it easier for high performing charter networks to expand in our state. We can be certain that school choice and charter schools will continue to be hot topics among those concerned with education, from the halls of the Capitol to the benches at Cambier Park.

FAMILY MEALS

By Lara Krupicka

Answering the

“What’s For Dinner” Question

By creating your own simple to use monthly meal-planning tool!

W

hat’s for dinner? It’s the question that begs to be answered night after night, whether you want it to or not. And that’s where it becomes a problem for many parents. But with one simple tool, which you can create for yourself, you can answer what’s for dinner tonight and the next night and the next with relative ease. You’ll be able to see at a glance the recipes you use most often and develop a meal plan from there. Here’s how you can create your own monthly menu-planning tool: Step One: Simplify Using Categories It’s easy to come up with thirty (or more) recipes you regularly use when you brainstorm in categories. To start your CEDR 1003 NeaFamily 1-4 pg Horiz.4_Layout 1 menu plan, you’ll want to consider which

categories of meals your family eats most frequently. Categories can include ethnic types of foods, such as Italian, Mexican, and Asian. Or group recipes by cooking method: crock pot meals, grill recipes, stovetop or oven cooking. If the man in your house is anything like mine, he’ll want meat at most meals. Then you could group your recipes by protein type: chicken, beef, pork, fish, beans. Brainstorm categories until you’ve found seven you could comfortably serve once a week. My menu categories are: Italian, Crockpot/casserole, Mexican, Meat and potatoes, Soup, Pizza Night, and Grill/ Quick & Easy. The category “Pizza Night” in my plan reflects our family’s tradition of making homemade pizza on Friday 2/18/13 9:45 AM Page 1 nights. If your family has a tradition like

this, include it in your categories. It will simplify your menu planning with a weekly “gimme.” Step Two: Play Favorites Under each of the categories list as many as you can of your favorite recipes (aim for five to nine for each). Take out the cookbooks and recipes you use most. Then find the meals you know your family enjoys. You’ll find the 80/20 rule applies here: you probably use 20% (or less) of the recipes you have 80% of the time. That’s okay. List those recipes first. If you’re coming up short in any of the categories, flip through your cookbooks or untested recipe files for new dishes to try. But be careful to put only a few on your list. You don’t want to be surprising your family the things he sees are not just remembered, they form a part of his soul.

with something unfamiliar more than once a week. If you have more new ideas you’d like to try, set them aside to include in next month’s plan. As you experiment using new dishes, mark on your menu plan whether they were a success or not. Those that are a hit with your family can become permanent additions to your list. Those that aren’t, put in the trash or mark with a notation warning you not to use them again. Once you’ve created your lists under each category, you should have more than 30 recipes to choose from. If you’re one who likes to keep things loose, you can stop here and simply use your lists as a “recipes at a glance” tool for deciding what to cook each night. But if you prefer to plan ahead, take heart. You’re more than halfway to mapping out a month’s worth of dinners. Step Three: Create A Basic Plan You’ll want to create your menu plan on a computer in order to save and reuse it each month. A spreadsheet works best. But if you’re more comfortable using a word processor, you can set up your plan there instead. I use a spreadsheet. Across the top list the name of the category. Simply cre-

ate seven category columns with category labels. Next create blocks of rows to represent the weeks of the month. To fit my spreadsheet setup, I’ve found nine rows in each block works well. On the right hand most column you can list the dates for the given week (e.g. October 16-22). Then under each category enter the lists you created in step two. Duplicate each list for the successive weeks, filling in the entire spreadsheet for the month. Once you’ve created your basic menu planning chart, you can insert and remove meals depending on season or changes in preferences. And you can change up the dates for the new month before you begin planning.

Step Four: Select This Month’s Meals With your chart in front of you listing the meals your family enjoys, you’re ready to select a month’s worth of meals. Using a highlighter or pen, highlight or circle one meal from each category for week one. Then move on to week two and select those meals, being careful to vary the selections from week one. If you prefer, you can work your way down each category, selecting a different recipe for each week until you’ve picked a variety of meals from each category. There you go! You’ve planned a month’s worth of meals. Using this plan you can create a grocery list. Once you have on hand everything necessary for your chosen meals (I find it easiest to shop for two weeks at once, but you could do one week at a time or shop for the whole month in one trip), you’ll be able to effortlessly answer the “what’s for dinner” question. And when schedules change, you’ll be able to adapt on the fly. Happy Menu Planning! LARA KRUPICKA is a freelance writer who loves finding ways to simplify her everyday tasks, like menu planning.

Shorebirds 101

Teaching your children about the birds that make Naples beaches their home.

A

ccording to a recent article in the New York Times by Deborah Cramer, a visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, “The number of North American long-distance migrating shorebirds that scientists have tracked has dropped by more than half since 1974, an alarming loss of 12 million birds.” Cramer also states that although the rate of bird extinctions is increasing, careful conservation practices have helped birds such as the bald eagle, peregrine falcon, and brown pelican recover from the harm done by the insecticide DDT. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s list of “imperiled species” includes many birds found in our area, including tricolored herons, white ibis, snowy egrets, roseate spoonbills, little blue herons, black skimmers, brown pelicans, least terns, and piping plovers. Unfortunately for both birds and humans, shorebirds are on the decline, and disturbing birds on the beach is contribut-

ing to the problem. Fortunately, we all can make a few changes in our beach routines that can help shorebirds thrive again. Teaching children to observe Tell your children to look at the birds from a short distance away and to watch how they clean their feathers. Encourage them to notice all the beautiful markings, legs, size and color of their beaks, and eyes. In the spring during mating season, Ibis get very red beaks and legs, and Blue Herons get bright blue beaks. Great white herons get long tail feathers. Reddish egrets do a little dance (like chickens) when they are looking for fish. While preening, or grooming themselves, birds may flap their wings to give themselves sand or dust baths for the purpose of getting rid of parasites. In order to fly, birds need to keep their feathers in good working order. Notice them pulling their feathers one-by-one to clean and tidy them. They also waterproof each feather by

spreading it with an oily substance secreted by a tiny gland, the uropygial gland, at the base of the tail. Feathers need to fit together like the teeth of a closed zipper. Polluted water destroys the waterproofing, and as a result birds can get water logged and chilled. Looking for signs Maybe you’ve noticed the signs on some beaches telling you not to disturb shore birds. Two volunteers at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, Bonnie Michaels and Jan Bachrach, wanted to raise awareness so they took the initiative to collect funds to make the signs. They worked with county and city Parks and Recreation departments

Things to Do

Things to Avoid

• Look at the birds with wonder and curiosity • Respect them and learn from them • Notice their behaviors – what are they doing and why • Learn to identify the various shorebirds – see how many species you can find • Notice their feeding habits – are they nibbling cochinas at the shore line or swooping into the water from up above to grab a fish? • See how the feeding habits are related to the type of beak • See if you can notice the different sounds that different species make • Foster compassion for the challenges that birds face in today’s world • Tour the Conservancy of Southwest Florida • Lobby for the protection of marshes and sensitive areas for nesting and food foraging

• Throwing anything at birds • Running through a flock on the beach • Walking too closely to resting birds • Feeding birds anything including bread crumbs and French fries. • If you are fishing, avoid casting while birds are around. • Giving handouts – if you fillet a fish, the bony leftovers are not good for the birds

Signs that a bird is hurt A bird struggling to stand, bloodied or with a dragging wing may have a serious injury. A pelican may be wrapped in fishing line or injured by hooks. A bird that can’t move may be underweight or undernourished. If you find an injured bird call the Conservancy’s hospital at 239-262-CARE (2273) 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. seven days a week. to install the signs, and they trained volunteers to approach and talk with beach goers. According to Mrs. Michaels, people don’t realize that birds sleep on the beach, that it’s their bedroom. When children chase or adults walk through a flock, the birds are greatly disturbed. Birds may fly from 15 miles to 600 miles or more per day during migration, and rest is very important for them. There are many stresses on birds, as many of their resting and nesting areas have been lost to development. Changing weather and overfishing have affected their food sources. There are non-native species that sometimes show up and out-compete native birds for food. You can help by walking around birds on the shoreline. According to Joanna Fitzgerald, director of the von Arx Wildlife Hospital, at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, “People really underestimate wildlife – what they go through and still survive is amazing. For instance, least terns will sometimes find private spots to nest on large flat gravel rooftops, such as at Publix and Macy’s. Parent birds then fly to the beach to get fish and bring food all the way back for the fledglings.” Sometimes the baby birds, learning to walk, fall off the roof and end up under her care at the hospital. The von Arx Wildlife Hospital at the Conservancy is a working hospital, as creatures need to be fed, injuries addressed, and cages cleaned. Birds receive water therapy, and some need time in flight enclosures. Pelicans injured by hooks and lines can be at the hospital as long as two months. There is a minimum of human interaction with the patients to keep them wild so that they can return to their natural environments. Don’t feed the birds While many people enjoy feeding birds at the beach it’s a bad idea, for both birds and people. If you feed birds, they start to look for and expect a handout. Some birds have been known to hover around people who are eating, and others have dug into diaper bags looking for food. Either way, such handouts don’t provide the natural diet that birds need. Healthy birds don’t weigh very much, and our fast food and carbs will harm their health. A very healthy pelican may weigh eight pounds, and most weigh less. Sandpipers weigh about 30 grams, which is just over one ounce. By encouraging your children to learn and enjoy these creatures that share the beaches and shorelines with us, you’re also helping to preserve them for future generations. RESOURCES: Visitors to the Conservancy can check out the viewing area at the hospital to get a glimpse of the birds and other wildlife being treated. You also may visit the Sapakie Family Classroom, a handson exploratory are set up for children or take a wildlife tour. For details about visiting and volunteering, visit www.conservancy.org. Shore birds and their feathers, nests, and eggs are protected under the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, state laws, and county ordinances. You can report wildlife violations by calling (888) 404-3922. Another important resource for protecting our shorebirds is the Collier County Shorebird Partnership. BIRTHDAYS

Need a new birthday party idea? Tour the airport, dig for dinosaur bones or get fired up with the fire department!

Naples 5 Most Creative and Inexpensive Birthday Parties Airport Tour Do you have an aviation fan in the family? The staff at the City of Naples Airport offers behind the scenes tours that are perfect for a birthday party. Not only is it free but it’s tons of fun. Your day can include some of the following depending on the time of year and availability of volunteers: Tours of the commercial terminal, a visit to the tower, visit to the fire station and a tour of a firetruck. Knowledgeable volunteers will share information about the airport, the planes that fly in and out of the Naples airport and the staff that are needed to run an airport. After your tour you can take advantage of the observation deck for a refreshments and play time. A birthday party at the airport is free but there are limited slots available and you must make reservations well ahead of time. Be aware that time is most limited during season. For more information contact Pam at 239-643-3773 or via email at Prinehart@flynaples.com. 40

Can U Dig it? Dinosaur Fun Your party guests can become junior archeologists in the covered fossil dig area at North Collier Regional Park. With a little planning you can find props for your child’s party online (orientaltrading. com has dinosaur bones and pith helmets) and then use the playground as the site for the guests to uncover dinosaur bones. Add some themed refreshments like dirt in a cup (crushed Oreo cookies and pudding!) and your guests will be talking about the party for weeks to come. Can U Dig It is located in the park just beyond the Sun-NFun Lagoon water park entry. No reservations are necessary to use the Can U Dig It? area but since you will be sharing it with other children, pick a quieter time of the day if possible. For information about the park call 239-252-4000.

Fire Department Visit Your party guests will love a visit to the North Naples Fire Department near Veterans Park off Immokalee Road. The kids can tour a fire truck and the firehouse. The firefighters will give the children a safety demonstration and explain the equipment. Tours are free of charge and offered during the week before 5:00 p.m. A limited number of tours are offered on weekends. Parents can rent the firehouse meeting room for $50 for refreshments or you can take the children to Veterans Park next door where there are picnic tables. For more information contact Pat Browne at 239-597-3222 or at Pbrowne@northcollierfire.com. Geocaching Geocaching is a great birthday activity for children who are 8 and older. The premise is simple: the coordinates of hidden caches are listed on www.geocaching.com and you use GPS and map reading skills to find hidden treasures. To get started round up a few adult helpers. Three children per adult is probably a good ratio. You’ll choose your geocaching locations from the list on the site but I can tell you that there are caches hidden in or very near most of the parks in Naples including North Collier Regional Park. That makes it convenient to go geocaching and then follow up with refreshments at the park. If you’re very motivated, you can create and hide your own, personalized caches. After the geocaching, head to the park picnic area for refreshments and prizes. As a take home favor, you can give each child a geocaching kit: pencil and paper for recording finds, and a few “trade” items (you’ll learn about that on the website). You may want to print out the article about family geocaching from the Neapolitan Family website (search for geocaching) and include a copy in each geocaching kit so kids can share the details with their own family. Regsiter at www.geocaching.com for instructions and geocaching locations. You’ll also find local geocaching information by searching for geocaching at neafamily.com.

Birthday FUN for Everyone! Naples Train Museum If your child loves trains, he/she is going to love a birthday party at the Naples Train Museum. Located within the Naples Depot Museum, at any given time there are 10 trains operating simultaneously. The museum is a great place for a small and inexpensive birthday party for children ages 4 and up. Adults and children in the birthday party have unlimited train rides and museum time. After the children enjoy the trains inside, serve cake or cupcakes at one of the outdoor picnic tables. Admission is adults $7, children 6 and over $4. Children under 6 are free. BIRTHDAYS

By Christina Katz

THE SAVVY PARTY PLANNER Countdown To a Stress-free Birthday Celebration Planning a memorable birthday event can be the highlight of your child’s year, if you maximize the fun and minimize the stress. The best way to increase the magic and decrease the madness is to use a handy checklist so you can start early and get ready gradually. Or if you want to plan your party in one fell swoop a few weeks ahead, this checklist will help you do that, too.

I

have been planning and hosting birthday parties for over a decade, and these steps will get you from vision to fruition. Follow these timing tips, and you’ll be able to keep a smile on your face from the day you start planning until the moment the final guest is picked up or dropped off. 10. Choose A Theme. Always have a theme. Having a focus will help you plan and execute your party without a hitch. Several months before your party date, brainstorm themes with your guest of honor. See sidebar for theme suggestions. 9. Make Reservations. If there is one thing I have learned about popular party venues, it’s that they fill up early. Once you have your theme and know you will need a location away from home, get your reservations nailed down tight two-three months in advance. 8. Find Supplies Online. Shop local when you can to support your local economy, but for those hard-to-locate items, don’t burn up time and gas searching for what you can easily find online. Generally speaking, onestop party stores are not as prevalent as they used to be and you’ll likely be delighted by the variety you can find online. Just make sure to place your orders at least month early to allow for shipping time and returns if anything is not what you’d expected. 7. Send Out Invitations. Evite wins handsdown for quick and easy party invites. Just visit evite.com, select a theme, add in your guests’ e-mail addresses, and send your invitations. Two weeks notice is usually just the right amount of time. But if it’s a busy time of year, add another week or two. 6. Order The Cake. Cakes and cupcakes can get expensive when you make them from scratch. Besides, the kids will probably like the local big-box or grocery store sheet cakes just as much as homemade. Order one week ahead for pickup up on party day for the freshest results. 5. Tackle Your Local Shopping List. Despite ordering ahead online, you probably still have few items you need to pick up locally.

42

NEAPOLITANfamily • July 2015

6/24/15 5:50 PM

Be sure to pick them up at least a week ahead in case you can’t find something and need to order it online after all. 4. Recruit Helpers. Why try to do everything yourself when you can have so much more fun at your party with plenty of helping hands standing by? Ask friends and family to chip in or trade help with a friend–she “works” at your child’s party, you “work” at hers.

BIRTHDAY PARTY THEMES

3. Curry Favors. Favors don’t have to be expensive or intricate. For a home party, go simple, fun, and inexpensive. Be as eco-friendly as possible by offering favors in a reusable container. If hosting a party elsewhere, consider letting the party be favor enough or simply offering a small treat to guests on the way out. 2. Set Up A Day Ahead. If you are ordering any large food deliveries like pizza, place your order a day ahead. Don’t forget to check online for any discounts or coupons. Then go ahead and tackle as much prep work as you can. Decorations? Food preparation? Party favors? Activity prep? Everything will go smoother on party day if you take care of as much as you can the day before. 1. Party Down! Get a good night’s sleep. Allow at least two hours prior for set up and one hour afterwards for clean up. Then enjoy every memorable moment. CHRISTINA KATZ has planned some fun birthday parties over the years including a pony party, a bowling party, and a roller skating party. But her all-time favorite was the sleepover spa party.

If you follow my advice, you’ll need a theme for your child’s next party. I checked with some friends to see what their favorite party themes were and came up with these suggestions:

60’s Retro Party Make tie-dyed tshirts, serve fondue and introduce your party guests to classic 60’s music like the Beatles and the Beach Boys.

Tea Party Whip up some finger foods including small sandwiches and tiny desserts plus pots of herbal tea, and you have the makings for a sweet party.

Science Party Search the internet for fun science experiments that are easy and fun for your age group. Give each child a lab coat as their favor.

Animal Party Use your child’s favorite animal as the theme for a fun, whimsical party. Make each child an animal mask to wear or make masks together as a fun crafts activity. If your child doesn’t have a favorite, choose monkey and you can’t lose.

LEGO Party If your child is a fan, planning a party around LEGOs is a sure fire hit. Gather as many as you can (check resale stores or yard sales if you’re short) and set up several stations. You’ll find plenty of food and decoration inspiration online.

BIRTHDAYS

By Kerrie McLoughlin

E

very year when I was a kid my parents would let me choose where I wanted to eat dinner out for my birthday. Another birthday tradition they kept going was to have a small party for me with family and friends, including a cookout since I have a June birthday. Kids love to feel special, and it can be a challenge to find the time to come up with ways to make a birthday a knockout. Children forget the presents they receive but they will remember how special you make them feel each year. Here are 10 ideas for birthday traditions to start with your own kids. Pick and choose a few to try … and stick with the ones you and your birthday kid love.

1.

Rise and shine. I like to wake my kids up on their birthday not with, “Get up! It’s time for school!” but with an extra long snuggle and the condensed version of the day they were born. Who doesn’t like to hear their birth story?! Adopted and foster children can be told how they were meant to be brought into the family and how special they are.

2.

Birthday letter. Every year I type up a birthday letter for each of my children telling them about the great things they did and said and learned during the past year. I give the birthday child a copy, then save a copy in a binder and on my computer for myself. The plan is to give each of my children a copy of all their letters when they move out.

3.

Birthday slideshow. With just a few clicks of your mouse you can create a special slideshow using PowerPoint or a similar computer program. Just pop in photos, size them and add cute captions. You can even add some music if you like. After your child watches it about a zillion times, save it to a CD

6/24/15 11:50 AM

and pop it in a special place (safe deposit box, fireproof box, etc.) so your child will always have it.

4.

Tell your child’s story. Kids love to hear how they came to be a part of your family so use each birthday to repeat all of the details. Tell the story of your child’s birth with all of the funny little details that make the day memorable: how daddy forgot to bring the packed suitcase or about the nurse who said this baby was the cutest one she had ever seen. Feel free to embelish and add props and get really creative.

5. 6.

Photos. I try to take as many pictures as I can on birthdays and make sure I’m included in some of them. Later we like to get out old photo albums and the birthday kid’s baby album. Special meal. One of my kids loves the neighborhood restaurant where they sing Happy Birthday and are given a balloon to take home. Another is content heading to a fast food play area and grabbing bites of food in between trips down the slide. Make at least one meal of the birthday child’s day something out of the ordinary.

7.

Special treat. We like to hit the cupcake restaurant or grab huge, frosted cookies from a local baker and share with our friends and neighbors to spread the celebration around. A cheap – and just as special – route would be to make your child’s favorite dessert at home … cookies, cake, banana splits, shakes or

ice cream sundaes are always a good bet.

8.

Birthday book. Gift your child with a special book each year that reflects their current interests. Write an inscription noting how the book relates to what’s going on in your child’s life or have all of the family members write somthing. You might choose to keep the birthday books sparate from their usual books to preserve them, taking them out to read at bedtime or on special occasions. When they reach adulthood, the collection of books will be an amazing reminder of their childhood and all of their birthdays.

9.

Party (doesn’t have to be on the actual birthday). If you get a few gray hairs every time you think of planning a birthday party, don’t fret. Options include: a simple party at your place with just a few people, a bash at a park shelter or a celebration where a local children’s party place does all the work.

10.

Birthday weekend sleepover with a few special friends (for kids over age 7). Warning: this one is not for the faint of heart! I suggest a maximum of 3 friends to stay the night at your house on a Friday night around the time of your child’s birthday. Order pizza to make life easy on yourself, grab some movies from the library and have them set up their sleeping bags as far away from your bedroom as possible.
