from the publisher… This Month: ‘Tis the Season
Last month we offered readers a look into 30 local non-profits with the hope that it would inspire you to give back to this amazing community we call home. We know you listened and opened both your wallets and your hearts to a diverse group of organizations. The feedback we received on Facebook and through email was overwhelming and we heard from many groups that our readers were generous with their time and money. Thank you so very much for taking the challenge and helping your neighbors in need. And, a special thank you to Assistant Publisher Stacy Nicolau for doing an exhaustive amount of research in pulling together a really valuable community resource. We’ll be leaving the list of organizations (along with links) on our website so you can access it any time throughout the year. To thank YOU for giving back in such a big way, we’re now giving TO you. We’ve brought back last year’s December contest and made it even bigger and better. This year’s prizes total almost $5,000! You’ll have 31 chances to win every prize--just go to our website at neafamily.com, click on the contests link and follow the instructions. You may enter once per day/per prize. We’ll draw random winners on January 1. What better way to start 2014 than with an amazing prize from one of our generous sponsors? The December pages of Neapolitan Family are filled with fun holiday ideas along with hundreds of festive events for your family. There is also a very important article among the fun, holiday ideas: Nicole Bruland’s article on managing smart phones and social media for your preteen and teens. Lots of Naples kids will be getting a special iPhone or smart phone for Christmas– please take some time to read about the apps that they will be able to access. Technology is an amazing thing but in the hands of an impressionable child, it can be very dangerous. The entire staff of Neapolitan Family wishes you a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year!
Andrea Breznay/Publisher NOTE: We would like to extend a huge thank you to Maddie and Theo Dahl for graciously allowing our cameras into their amazing home for our December cover shoot. I’m not sure who had more fun at the shoot–our cover model or Peggy and me!

Movie & DVD Reviews for you and your family
D
ecember brings hobbits, dinosaurs, and the story behind Disney’s classic “Mary Poppins.” Here’s a sneak peek at what’s new in theaters and on DVD and blu-ray this month.
THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG Not yet rated; likely PG-13. In theaters 12/13. Ok for kids 12+. Reel Preview: 4.5 of 5 Reels. Yay! Another ‘Hobbit” movie! After successfully crossing over (and under) the Misty Mountains, Thorin and Company must seek aid from a powerful stranger before taking on the dangers of Mirkwood Forest - without their Wizard. If they reach the human settlement of Lake-town, it will be time for the hobbit Bilbo Baggins to fulfill his contract with the dwarves. The party must complete the journey to Lonely Mountain, and burglar Baggins must find the Secret Door that will give them access to the hoard of the dragon Smaug. But where has Gandalf got off to? And what is his secret business to the south? Find out in this second installment of “The Hobbit.” SAVING MR. BANKS Rated PG-13 for thematic elements, including some unsettling images. In theaters 12/20. Ok for kids 12+. Reel Preview: 4.5 of 5 Reels. Ever wonder about the story behind Disney’s classic family movie, “Mary Poppins”? Now we’ll know. When Walt Disney’s daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book by P.L. Travers, he made them a promise - one that he didn’t realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt (Tom Hanks) comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer (Emma Thompson) who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hol-

lywood machine (good for her!). But, as the books stop selling and money grows short, Travers reluctantly travels to Los Angeles to hear Disney’s plans for the adaptation.
Madea dishes her own brand of Christmas Spirit to all. Tyler Perry directs, produces, wrote the script, and yes, stars in this year’s “Madea” movie. Sure, these movies are predictable, but the message is always good. THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY
WALKING WITH DINOSAURS 3D Not yet rated; likely PG. In theaters 12/20. Ok for kids 7+. Reel Preview: 4 of 5 Reels. The BBC television series strides its way to the big screen with this live-action/CG-animated feature film following a courageous young dinosaur on an incredible adventure through the prehistoric world. See and feel what it was like when dinosaurs ruled the Earth with this ultimate immersive experience, utilizing state of the art 3D that puts you right in the middle of an epic prehistoric world. Awesome. TYLER PERRY’S A MADEA CHRISTMAS Rated PG-13 for sexual references, crude humor and language. In theaters 12/13. Ok for kids 13+. Reel Preview: 3.5 of 5 Reels. Madea gets coaxed into helping a friend pay her daughter a surprise visit in the country for Christmas, but the biggest surprise is what they’ll find when they arrive. As the small town prepares for its annual Christmas Jubilee, new secrets are revealed and old relationships are tested while
Not yet rated; likely PG-13. In theaters 12/25. Ok for kids 12+. Reel Preview: 5 of 5 Reels. In this comedic adaptation of James Thurber’s short story, Ben Stiller stars as Walter Mitty a milquetoast proofreader for a publishing firm. Walter is incapable of standing up for himself, so he retreats into his fantasy world, where he’s heroic, poised, self-assured, and the master of his fate. Stiller directs from a script by Steven Conrad, with Kristen Wiig, Patton Oswalt, and Shirley MacLaine rounding out the starring cast. NEW ON DVD | BLU-RAY: DESPICABLE ME 2 PG for rude humor and mild action. On DVD/Blu-ray 12/03. Ok for kids 6+. Reel Review: 5 of 5 Reels. Gru, his adorable girls, and the mischievous Minions are back with a cast of unforgettable new characters in the blockbuster sequel to the worldwide phenomenon. Just as Gru has given up being super-bad to be a super-dad, the Anti-Villain League recruits him to track down a new criminal mastermind and save the world. Partnered with secret agent Lucy Wilde, Gru, along with the wildly unpredictable Minions, NEAPOLITANfamily • December 2013

must figure out how to keep his cover while also keeping up with his duties as a father. My favorite family movie of 2013, “Despicable Me 2” stars Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig. Includes a ton of bonus features, including three new mini-movies starring the Minions. TRANSFORMERS PRIME: BEAST HUNTERS Not rated. On DVD/Blu-ray 12/03. Ok for kids 9+. Reel Review: 4 of 5 Reels. The Autobots and their human comrades have been separated, following the destruction of their headquarters, and Optimus Prime badly injured. Unfortunately, this is just the beginning of their troubles, as the powerful Decepticon Shockwave has come to Earth with his newest weapon - a clone of one of Cybertron’s most ancient and fearsome beasts known as Predaking. Now it’s up to the Autobots and their allies to protect the world from evil one last time. The epic conclusion to the acclaimed series “Transformers Prime: Beast Hunters,” released by Shout! Factory.
THOMAS & FRIENDS: THE THOMAS WAY Not rated. On DVD 12/03. Ok for kids 3+. Reel Review: 4 of 5 Reels. Join “Thomas & Friends” for five all-new, exciting adventures. When Harold breaks down, Thomas and Duck are asked to take him for repairs, but Thomas has something more fun in mind which only leads to trouble. Luke and Millie switch jobs for a day and quickly learn how much they truly like their own work. Percy is having a bad day and feeling very unlucky, but when a friend gives him a lucky charm, he thinks things might turn around. Caitlin is so excited to spend the night on
Sodor that she doesn’t let the other engines get any rest - so they find jobs to keep her busy through the night. When playful Paxton convinces Thomas to be silly and drive over some bumpy tracks, he doesn’t realize his actions will make Thomas `lose his puff,’ and he scrambles across the island in an attempt to help his friend. “Thomas & Friends” are reliably safe and innocent for little ones. JANE’S REEL RATING SYSTEM One Reel – Even the Force can’t save it. Two Reels – Coulda been a contender Three Reels – Something to talk about. Four Reels – You want the truth? Great flick! Five Reels – Wow! The stuff dreams are made of. JANE BOURSAW is founder and editorin-chief of Reel Life With Jane, a family entertainment site specializing in movies, TV and celebrities. MARY POPPINS 50TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION Rated G. On DVD/blu-ray 12/10. Ok for kids 6+. Reel Review: 5 of 5 Reels. Released from the Disney Vault in celebration of its 50th Anniversary, this beloved classic shines like never before on DVD and blu-ray with an all-new digital restoration. Winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Actress (Julie Andrews), Best Song (“Chim Chim Cher-ee”) and Best Visual Effects, “Mary Poppins” continues to stand the test of time. You know the story: Mary Poppins flies out of the windy London skies and into the home of two mischievous children. With the help of a carefree chimney sweep named Bert (Dick Van Dyke), the spirited nanny turns every chore into a game and every day into a “Jolly Holiday.”

PARENTING
By Nicole Flesvig Bruland
#stayinformed Managing Smart Phones & Social Media for Kids
H
oliday season is here and this means that your kids probably already have made requests for technological gifts such as smart phones, tablets, personal computers, game consoles and other popular devices. As parents, we know that access to technology opens the doors to learning games, and social media, letting kids expand their horizons as never before. Although there are many positive benefits to be had by providing our children with technological tools, greater access to the world can also come with headaches, even danger, if parents and kids aren’t vigilant in monitoring and keeping use at an age-appropriate level. According to Nielsen’s Social Media Report 2012, Americans are spending more than 30 percent of their online time using social media via web sites and mobile applications, otherwise known as “apps”. It wasn’t too long ago that ‘tweens and teens latched on to Facebook and Twitter to stay in touch with the social scene. Though both remain popular, research shows that because their world is all about staying in touch in a manner that provides instant gratification today’s kids are gravitating to social apps designed to connect more quickly than ever. Many of these apps, such as Instagram and Vine, provide opportunities for users to connect simply by posting a photo or video. For example, with Vine, a Twitter creation, users can post six-second videos to communicate with their friends and other users. Social media apps aren’t the only ways kids communicate with each other and the outside world. Most video games, whether played on consoles such as Xbox and Wii or as smart phone and tablet apps, allow social communication with other users. In fact, with interactive multi-player sites targeting younger children, such as Club Penguin, kids are exposed to portable gadgets and social media as early as age five or six. As
12
neafamily.com
December 13.indd 12
smart phones and tablets become more advanced, there also are builtin features for communication via text, photo, and video chat (Skype, Facetime, etc.). It all seems difficult to control. Are you feeling a little nervous yet? I know I am. Greater Access Equals Greater Risk Just as we teach our children about “stranger danger” and how to stay safe in the real world, it’s as important, perhaps more so, to teach them how to stay safe in the virtual world. This includes not only protecting them from strangers, but sometimes protecting them from each other. You see, social media allows users to be themselves and interact with one another, but it also gives users a platform through which to create a sense of self outside of that which we show in the real world. When this happens, quiet people become outspoken, the timid become brave and nice people may even transform into bullies. Social media also has the potential to provide greater access to those strangers we all fear, turning innocent kids into potential victims. Turn on the news, or consult your favorite news app and there is sure to be a story about an assault, kidnapping, suicide or other crime which originated with social media. In many cases, these stories involve ‘tweens and teens, so it is as essential as ever to guide our children in making good choices and, when necessary, be able to make choices for them. How to Manage Technology and Reduce Risk Whether you have already provided your child with mobile technology of some sort, or you are thinking about it, there are ways you can keep content and contact age appropriate. The most important thing that parents can do is to be technologically literate to maintain control of household use and safety. Here are some tips: • Set rules governing the use of technology in your family. • Talk with your child about expectations, privacy and appropriate use. • Decide which applications you’d like your child to use. • Maintain access to all devices and check texts, calls and apps regularly. • Require devices to be kept in a central area when not in use, such as at bed time. • Take advantage of restriction-setting features on all devices, available on the device as well as through your service provider. • Take advantage of built-in features and apps tracking use and location. • Use the parental controls available within apps. They allow you to determine the type of content your child can access. • Keep application store passwords to yourself. When your child wants a new app, even a free one, you’ll be the one to provide permission and to download it. This also prevents “in app purchases” which can be costly.

The top trending preteen and teen SOCIAL MEDIA sites & apps 4CHAN: 4chan is a simple image-based bulletin board where anyone can post comments and share images. There are boards dedicated to a variety of topics. Users do not need to register an account before participating in the community. Beware, there are quite a few “adult-oriented” boards including boards where you can view hardcore pornography. ASK.FM: Ask.fm is a question asking and answering service that gives teens the opportunity to ask and answer controversial questions totally anonymously. The answers can be either in text or video format and users can also browse other people’s profiles with the option of submitting questions directly to them. You only have to skim through the site to see that sexualized, abusive and bullying content can be--and is-being posted unchecked. GOOGLEPLUS: Google+ is a social networking site that adds to all of Google’s other services, including Web search, Gmail, and YouTube. Google+ brings popular social-media features like comments, photo and music sharing, video chat, etc. to your child’s social circles. Teens are moving to Google+ from Facebook as their parents become more active on FB. INSTAGRAM: Instagram is a photo sharing site that probably is the most popular tween and teen app right now. This generation of kids loves taking photos and smart phones make it easy. You create a profile and then post your filter-enhanced photos. Depending on how the account is set up, photos are out there for everyone to see including people who aren’t followers. The geotags also allow others to see where the photo was taken. KIK: Teens are also “kiking” each other, or sending texts, via the Kik Messenger text-messaging service that welcomes group texts and isn’t tied to a phone number but a user name. The text messages don’t live on the phone but inside the app. OOVOO: Oovoo is a free video, voice and messaging app. Users can have group chats with up to six people for free (and up to 12 for a premium fee). Teens mostly use Oovoo to hang out with friends. The plus of Oovoo is that kids can only chat with those in their approved list. PHEED: Pheed, a hybrid of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube, swiftly has become the No. 1 free social app in the App Store. There is a fee for others to access your content. It remains
to be seen whether musicians and artists will flock to the site in the same way as teens seem to be doing. Currently, posts are public by default and therefore searchable online. REDDIT: Reddit is a community bulletin board that allows subscribers to post original content or links within areas of interest. Stories move up or down based on votes. The site is heavy with suggestive and offensive content. SNAPCHAT: Snapchat is a mobile app that is used to send digital photos that self-destruct in minutes. The thing is, teens can do a screen grab and the photo is saved forever (or long enough to really damage a teen’s reputation.) TUMBLR: Tumblr is a cross between a blog and Twitter–a streaming scrapbook of text, photos and/or videos and audio clips. Users create and follow short blogs, or “tumblelogs,” that can be seen by anyone online (if made public). Pornography and sexual suggestive content is accessible easily. TWITTER: Twitter is a micro blogging site that allows users to post brief, 140-character messages–called “tweets”–and follow other users’ activities. One of the biggest drawbacks is that tweets are instantaneous and while they can be deleted, it’s easy enough to do a screen grab of a Tweet. VINE: Teens usually use Vine to create and share silly videos of themselves and/or their friends and family. The videos you post, the accounts you follow and the comments you make on videos are all public by default. But you can adjust your settings to protect your posts; only followers will see them, and you have to approve new followers. There are a lot of creative videos on Vine but much of it isn’t appropriate for preteens and teens. WANELO: On Wanelo, teens keep up with the latest styles by browsing the “trending” feed, which presents the items that are most popular across the site. They can use the “My feed” function to display their choices from the brands they follow. Wanelo is relatively harmless with the exception of encouraging consumerism and too much attention to brand names. WHATSAPP: WhatsApp Messenger is a crossplatform mobile messaging app that allows you to exchange messages without having to pay for SMS. Whatsapp has become extremely popular with teens. neafamily.com

nterest in food and cooking is at an all-time high, thanks to the multitude of cooking shows and competitions on television. But you can learn only so much from a celebrity chef on a flat screen. To get a hands-on experience, head on over to Sur La Table in Mercato. You can even take your kids! French for “on the table,” Sur La Table is devoted to all things culinary, including a full calendar of cooking classes. The Sur La Table national brand boasts one of the largest non-vocational cooking programs in the country, teaching more than 100,000 cooking enthusiasts yearly. Classes scheduled for December include Gluten-free Baking, Girl’s Night Out: Fast, French and Fabulous, Family Fun: Bake & Decorate Holiday Cookies, and a two-day Kid’s Cooking Camp during winter break. You can even create your own class or private party. During a recent Date Night: Tuscany for Two cooking class at Sur La Table, Chef Brent Moore (who trained in Colorado and New York and most recently was the Executive Chef at K.C. American Bistro in Naples) told the class that we’ve been handling broccoli rabe all wrong. Most of us were blanching the vegetable, which, Chef Brent explains, removes the bitterness that gives broccoli rabe its unique flavor. He also shows us how to cut it perfectly using the right chef’s knife, in order to sauté the green vegetable to perfection. Recent French Culinary Institute graduate Deniece Villa began her Sur La Tab career on the day of this class by teaching us how to juice a pomegranate for the vinaigrette on the salad we were preparing. Chef Brent and his able assistants impart their wisdom throughout the 2½ hour class while students chop, whisk, stir, sauté and sip their own wine. The class kitchen is enormous and accommodating for the nine couples participating in this class. Understandably, the atmosphere becomes lively as the wine flows and the aromas we are cooking up start

filling the room. Everyone is having fun cooking, sharing stories and sampling each other’s work of balsamic-braised pork tenderloin and buttermilk panna cotta with plum compote. Throughout the class the assistants work like kitchen elves, taking away our dirty bowls and handing us fresh utensils as needed. Neapolitan mom Jennifer Hynes says that assisting in the cooking classes is perfect job for her in this stage of life after a career in hospitality. The classroom window attracts numerous Mercato pedestrian spectators, noses pressed to the glass as though they are trying to get the slightest whiff of what is going on. The class ends with the anticipated and delicious meal that we have all prepared. In no time at all, the kitchen is returned to showroom status by the kitchen elves. This, I have decided, is the perfect way to cook: all of the fun with none of the cleanup.
Bring the kids The classes at Sur La Table aren’t just for grown-ups. The Family Fun: Bake & Decorate Holiday Cookies class provides the opportunity for you to learn alongside your children, while the two-day Kid’s Cooking Camp during winter break gives your kids a chance to “experience a world of hands-on culinary exploration with their peers and an experienced Sur La Table chef instructor,” according to the Sur La Table website. Chef’s assistant Karen Gilley, who teaches kindergarten at Naples Park Elementary, enjoys working at the kids’ cooking classes because the chefs are “so good with the kids and they always love learning to cook, especially pizza.” For the family baking class, children must be at least 5 years old, while children ages 8-12 may participate in the holiday cooking camp. But it’s never too early to introduce your children to cooking: Chef Brent takes his cooking skills to his home kitchen to teach his two year-old Brentley how to make the perfect scrambled eggs.

Clint was a happy kid with a loving family and dreams of being a firefighter. But mixing with the wrong crowd led him down a destructive path that escalated to a devastating addiction to opioids and cocaine. After a drug arrest, his life began to unravel. The ensuing financial burden and mental, physical and emotional pain of nearly losing their son tore his family apart. When he was admitted to DLC for detox and Crossroads residential treatment, he was a 28-year-old broken man with a bleak outlook on life, but he was committed to his recovery. Clint took advantage of the tools he was given, actively engaged in group and leaned on the expert staff for guidance. He stays sober by attending 12-step meetings and staying honest and humble. f o r M e n t a l We l l n e s s
His Mind is Our Concern. Mental health is a community issue. Fortunately, there’s a community solution. Clint is among one in four in Collier County who suffer from a mental illness. One in nine of us will experience some form of substance abuse. When a family member, friend or coworker battles a mental health or substance abuse problem, we suffer with them. Thankfully, David Lawrence Center is here for our community.

ONE TANK TRIPS FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Captiva Island A Short Drive From Naples But Long on Holiday Fun!
C
aptiva Island is just a short 1-1/2 hour drive from Naples–just perfect for a fun-filled day trip. During the holiday season, you’ll find the island decorated, lit up and welcoming of visitors. This year there are even more events planned as well as a new event: The South Seas Holiday Stroll. South Seas Island Resort will open its gates to the public this holiday season, and it’s all for a worthy cause. During two weekends, South Seas Island Resort will host the South Seas Holiday Stroll where attendees can access the resort grounds and marina that will be aglow with lights, entertainment, arts and crafts, and visits with Santa. From Dec. 12 to 15 and 19 to 22, South Seas will admit anyone who has purchased a $20 Captiva Village Coupon Book. Each book includes $500 worth of coupons from island businesses. It also include a ride on the Jolly Trolley which will run from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. to transport visitors from South Seas’ South Village to North Pointe, where they will exit near the Marina, where all the events, activities and entertainment will take place.
“This is such a fabulous opportunity for all ages to enjoy the perfect island holiday setting while raising much needed funds to help our local children,” said Dorothy Fitzgerald, a Sanibel Island resident and member of the Captiva Island Yacht Club who is chairing the Holiday Stroll. “There’s something for everyone to enjoy, from live entertainment to arts and crafts, games, S’mores and of course jolly old St. Nick. This holiday stroll is sure to become a new holiday tradition for families.” All proceeds will benefit the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, a new 128-bed pediatric medical facility being built on the grounds of HealthPark Medical Center in South Fort Myers. The Fourth Annual Captiva Holiday Village presents special themed weekends –fun filled extravaganzas of sight and sound, set against the backdrop of the Gulf of Mexico and evening sunsets. During the event weekends, visitors can enjoy everything from decorated golf cart and lighted boat parades to Junkanoo dancers, live music and even a Marching Mullet Parade.
A production crew from the Travel Channel filmed last year’s annual Captiva Holiday Village Golf Cart Parade as part of a proposed show called ‘Xtreme Xmas’ based on unique Christmas events across the United States. “We were looking to showcase the best of the best across America but wanted to get away from the typical stories like the Radio City Rockettes or the lighting of the Rockefeller Center tree in New York City,” said Travel Channel Creative Producer Nicole Dunn. The show, which also featured a festival in Jennings, Louisiana, a parade in New Mexico and Trappist monks in Missouri making fruitcakes for the holidays, is expected to air seven to 10 times between this year’s Thanksgiving and Christmas. Each year, Captiva locals try to outdo their neighbor by extravagantly decorating their personal or rented golf carts in lights, garland, hats and even plastic flamingos. Fun, festive and sometimes gaudy outfits go along with the tradition.

Fakahatchee Cruise Dec. 19
T
he Friends of Fakahatchee are offering a guided holiday cruise to historic Fakahatchee Island Thursday, December 19. The island off the coast of Everglades City was once home to a thriving community of farming and fishing families. It even had a school. In earlier days, Calusa Indians made the island their home. Everglades National Boat Tours will head for the island through the mangroves of the Ten Thousand Islands and there is a good chance dolphins will entertain the craft. Once on the island, a naturalist will point out unusual plants on the path to the historic cemetery. On the return journey, the setting sun will provide photographers with many memorable scenes. The December 19 cruise will provide a memorable holiday activity for visiting guests. Cold drinks and snacks will be served on the boat. Participants should bring bug repellent and wear long clothing and closed shoes. Jackets are a good idea as it can be much cooler on the water than the mainland. The cruise begins at the Everglades National Park shelter near the docks at 2:30 p.m. and returns at 5:30 p.m. Advance reservations at $75 per person are required. The “Hidden” Benefits of Martial Arts Training
I
t’s long been known that training in a martial art, like TaeKwonDo, provides tremendous physical benefits. Improved strength, increased cardiovascular endurance and greater flexibilty being among the most commonly recognized. However, there are many less obvious benefits that come with consistent TaeKwonDo training. Since TaeKwonDo is an activity that people ages four and up can participate in, the benefits for all ages are many. For both kids and adults self confidence is perhaps the most important benefit of all. For kids, self confidence through TaeKwonDo training comes from consistent setting and achieving of goals, earning new belts, competition, and continual development of new skills and abilities. Each time a child sets a goal to earn a new belt, works hard for several months, and then achieves that goal their self confidence grows. The self confidence developed in the TaeKwonDo classroom has a ripple effect. We find that kids that train in TaeKwonDo are generally less likely to be bullied, but are much better equipped to deal with it if should it happen to them. They are also more likely to ask questions, participate in discussions, and set higher expectations for themselves at school. Confident children are more willing to try new activities and participate socially than those that lack self confidence. Young people with a positive self image, that are confident and goal oriented are also much less sucseptible to peer pressure and are less likely to make poor decisions. A confident child will grow to be a successful adult. Though it’s discussed far less, self confidence for adults is just as important as it is for kids. Many, many adults suffer from low self esteem and lack self confidence. This keeps them in jobs they don’t like, unhealthy relationships, physically and emotionally “un-fit”, and from ever realizing their true potential. An adult, at any age, that is physically fit, active, and healthy will naturally feel better about themselves. Just as important for adults are the mental benefits that come from consistent training. Stress is one of the most dangerous factors influencing peoples health today. Stress that goes unmanaged can have dire consequences. Martial arts training is a great stress reliever. It allows adults a couple of hours a week to completely forget about all their other problems and responsibilities and to be completely focused on themselves and their training. As our worries and stress levels decrease, our confidence and ability to handle work and family life increase. Consistent goal setting and personal development are consistent messages in TaeKwonDo training, which again, have a ripple effect into peoples personal lives. Self confidence for both kids and adults is important in maintaining a healthy, productive lifestyle. TaeKwonDo is an activity that can be practiced anywhere, any time, and requires almost no equipment. Consistent martial arts practice will have many positive impacts on a persons life, some that are immediately obvious, such as weight loss and physical fitness. And some that are more subtle, yet even more important, like self confidence. JON FROST is a 5th Degree Black Belt and owner of Tiger Rock Martial Arts at 1575 Pine Ridge Rd., #12, Naples. He can be reached at (239) 596-2501.

Happy Family-Friendly New Year!
A
s the parent of one or more young children, you may be anticipating a New Year’s Eve that is less sequins and champagne and more mini hot dogs and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Fortunately, celebrating this traditionally decadent night in a family friendly way can be just as much fun for grown-ups as for kids.
If you’re willing to push back bedtime at least a little bit, those extra hours can provide a great opportunity to enjoy a creative family activity while making memories that will last for years to come. Consider using one of the six ideas below to help your family ring in 2014 in style. 1. Create something together. Take a break from your usual movie night and tackle a more adventurous project as a family. If your children are young, collaborate on a giant butcher paper mural or use wooden blocks to recreate your home and street. Older kids may be ready to take on a 500-piece puzzle or an elaborate LEGO construction project. Your family will end the night with a sense of accomplishment plus some great photos of your creation. 2. Reminisce about the old year. Given the current popularity of digital cameras, camera phones and online photo sharing, many parents have gotten out of the habit of regularly printing photos, let alone displaying them in neatly labeled albums. New Year’s Eve is a perfect time to cycle through the digital photos you’ve stored on your laptop over the past year. Talk about the memories associated with your pictures, then ask each family member to select their five or ten favorites. You can spend New Year’s Day arranging the chosen pictures in a customized photo book to print and enjoy. 3. Create a family “bucket list” for the coming year. How can your family make 2014 your best year yet? Maybe you really want to take the kids ice-skating for the first time this January. Or, perhaps your daughter’s life won’t be complete unless your family attends the town’s annual Easter egg hunt in March. Decide as a family which events and activities are most important for the months ahead and commit to them in writing. Then, immediately schedule upcoming activities on the family calendar to make sure they don’t get lost in the shuffle of daily life.

4. Dress for Dinner. Regardless of whether you’ll be leaving the house, encourage family members to don their snazziest attire to say goodbye to 2013. Even take-out pizza eaten off of paper plates feels special when you’re dressed to the nines! Pick up some New Year’s Eve party hats, leis and other accessories at www.orientaltrading.com to complete the look. 5. Stretch your celebration. It’s 12:00 a.m. somewhere! Check out www.timeanddate.com to see where. Per the site’s handy New Year Countdown, Christmas Island will celebrate the arrival of 2014 at 5:00 a.m., Japan at 10:00 a.m., and the U.K. at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Standard time. If one round of “Happy New Year!” isn’t enough for your family, enjoy a quick celebration every hour on the hour! Or, focus on celebrating with the countries you feel personally connected to due to your family history or past travel adventures. 6. Enjoy your own private “ball drop.” Whether or not you plan to stay up to watch the big Times Square Ball Drop, kids will have a blast recreating this tradition in your home. A racquetball or tennis ball can be manually “dropped” down a length of string while family members count down from 60. As an added bonus, decorating the chosen ball with sequins, glitter, feathers, or paint will make a great art project for your kids during the days leading up to New Year’s Eve! Choose one of these activities, add some tasty snacks and festive music, and enjoy a fun and memorable night with your family. Happy New Year to you and yours! HOLIDAYS
By Gayla Grace
Give Gifts without Price Tags
I
recall giving gifts to my mom as a young child that were handwritten notes wrapped up as a package. They would say things like, “Redeem for extra help in the kitchen,” or “Good for babysitting my sister while you go to the store.” The special ones would say, “Redeem for an attitude adjustment on a cranky day.” My mom loved getting my gifts and always made a big deal of exchanging the gift for whatever I offered. It gave me a special feeling of satisfaction to know I helped my mom through a simple gift of service or attitude change that lightened the day for everyone. Do you need some gift ideas for your kids to give you or your husband? Gifts they can give their siblings? Or maybe a grandparent? Help your child make a list of ideas of what he or she might offer through a gift of service or perhaps a gift of the heart.
It’s easy to take your children to the store and buy a gift of material value. This season, let them experience a gift with more meaning by including one of a personal investment.
Here are some ideas to help. Mom: • Redeem for help washing the windows • Good for helping younger sibling with homework • Redeem for a week-end day of performing your chores • Good for a week of practicing my manners every day Dad: • Redeem for help washing and vacuuming Mom’s car • Good for a day without electronics • Redeem for help with lawn care • Good for no grumbling when asked to do a special chore Sibling: • Redeem for cleaning your room • Good for a kind attitude toward you all week-end • Redeem for extra time on the Xbox (or TV or whatever works) • Good for letting you and your friend have the evening alone Grandparent: • Redeem for time together at the movies • Good for help with a cleaning project • Redeem for help on your next shopping trip • Good for a game of cards or board game of your choice It’s easy to take your children to the store and buy a gift of material value. This season, let them experience a gift with more meaning by including one of a personal investment. Additional Gifts There’s other ways to give gift without price tags, but they don’t get wrapped up and put under the tree. They’re gifts we offer to those around us during the hectic, crazy holiday season. As a mom to five children, I’ve struggled through difficult holiday seasons-days full of out-of-control emotions, hectic schedules, non-cooperative kids, and count-

less other stressors. After a particularly difficult year, I evaluated the details of the season and determined the missing ingredients to our holiday season: ample doses of grace and flexibility. It’s easy to find ways to give grace and flexibility to our children, our spouse, our work associates and others during tensionfilled moments and stress-filled days. We can choose to offer grace toward hurtful words and a flexible spirit when a stubborn demeanor shows up, enabling a peaceful environment. Heather Hetchler, mom to six says, “While most gifts end up in a landfill, grace and flexibility help create cherished memories that will forever live in the hearts of those who receive these precious gifts.” Many families have unique challenges that show up during the holidays. Addiction seeps into homes, creating havoc and dissension. Mental illness rears its ugly head, resulting in confusion and uncertainty. The loss of a loved one creates a sad reminder that holidays will never be the same. Grace is the perfect answer when irritability, sadness, or frustration set in. Flexibility becomes a necessary part of unwrapping holiday peace when schedules change or the unexpected happens. Illness, job loss, marital disharmony. These unexpected events create heartache that disrupts holiday peace. Flexibility becomes the key to creating a peace-filled moment amidst stressed-out emotions. Jan Gull, stepmom to three, says she incorporates flexibility during the holiday season with “more being, less doing.” She maintains a schedule that allows time to create memories as a family through baking cookies together and making gifts for others instead of spinning the web of excessive spending and gift-giving. Grace and flexibility are not always easy to offer, but can be priceless gifts when extended during stressful periods. We can intentionally choose to make choices that allow for a peaceful season. Gifts without price tags are a great gift for anyone. Whether you choose one to wrap as a gift, or select one to offer in passing, you’re making the right choice. Give it a try this season!
