THIS MONTH:
Fall Fun
We’re officially in Autumn and I know that for many of my raised-in-thenorth friends, October is a little bittersweet. While the weather in Florida is usually pretty perfect this month, it’s hard not to miss the Autumn colors. I’m heading to Tennessee this month for a memorial celebration for a dear friend of mine who passed away this summer. Our group of friends is gathering to honor her while we enjoy the beautiful Autumn colors and weather in her beloved Smoky Mountains. We may not have fall leaves to enjoy but we do have an abundance of fall events, festivals and Halloween events for you to enjoy! Stacy Nicolau checked with local groups and organizations to bring you a comprehensive guide to the many family-friendly and fun happenings this month. Turn to pages 38-43 for all of the details. The guide will also be online and we’ll update it as new events come in. We’ll have a link on the home page at neafamily.com so you can find it easily. I’m excited to welcome two new columnists to the magazine this month. Anna Futrell, who also writes features for us, will be contributing a monthly column on the joys, frustrations and day to day life as a new mom. Rachel Newman who is the daughter of our Copy Editor, Leigh Ann, will be writing a monthly book review. Rachel is an avid reader who pestered her mother to pitch the idea of a kid’s book review to me and of course, I loved the idea. Who better to fill in other children about what book to read next than another kid? Welcome Anna and Rachel! I hope you have a lovely month filled with fall color, apple cider and family fun!

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney survives and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he draws on his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he’s indeed alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. Based on the book by Andy Weir and directed by Ridley Scott, this movie also stars Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.
Directed by Jared Hess (“Napoleon Dynamite”), this action comedy stars Zach Galifianakis as David Ghantt, an uncomplicated man stuck in a monotonous life. Day after day he drives an armored vehicle, transporting millions of other people’s money with no escape in sight. The only glimmer of excitement is his flirtatious work crush Kelly Campbell (Kristen Wiig) who soon lures him into the scheme of a lifetime. Along with a group of half-brained criminals led by Steve Chambers (Owen Wilson) and an absurd heist plan, David manages the impossible and makes off with $17 million in cash. The only problem? He foolishly hands the money over to the double crossers, who set him up to take the fall. With the bandits blowing the millions on lavish luxuries, David must dodge the authorities, evade a hilarious hit man (Jason Sudeikis), and try to turn the tables on the ones he trusted most. Based on the popular book series by R.L. Stine, this movie centers on teenager Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette), who’s upset about moving from the big city to a small town, but finds a silver lining when he meets the beautiful Hannah (Odeya Rush) living next door. But Zach’s silver lining reveals a cloud when he learns that Hannah’s mysterious dad is R. L. Stine (Jack Black), author of the bestselling Goosebumps series. And those monsters from his books are indeed real; Stine protects 8

Galvanized by the outlaw fugitive Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep), Maud becomes an activist for the cause alongside women from all walks of life. Inspired by true events, this movie explores the passion and heartbreak of those who risked all they had for women’s right to vote – their jobs, their homes, their children, even their lives. COLLIER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
By Katie Tanner, Communications Specialist for CCPS
Navigating the School Car Line “Cars are moving!” calls Stephanie Masone into a microphone as she waves drivers by with her hand in front of Veterans Memorial Elementary School (VME). Masone is one of the many staff members that help coordinate the school’s car line. Ah yes… the dreaded school car line. Based on the gripes I have heard from both parents on social media and from school staff, it is something that drives a lot of people crazy. So, I decided I would investigate the matter myself to see if it really is as chaotic as some people describe – and to gather any tips from both school staff and parents to make the process a little less stressful. It is important to note that almost every school has a different system for their car line. School staff members are always looking for ways to streamline the process,
but also keep it as safe as possible. “The biggest safety mistakes I see are people who don’t obey the crosswalk and drivers who don’t slow down,” explains Melissa Kettler, a parent of two students at Laurel Oak Elementary (LOE). Kettler tells me she also has a son in middle school and has been doing the car line for many years. She calls the car line at LOE “a smooth one.” Kettler was also one of the first cars in line on the day I visited, which brings me to my next piece of advice – arriving early. At all of the schools I visited, I noticed cars started to line up at least an hour before dismissal. “You have to, otherwise you will be waiting a long time,” explains Blaine Johnathan, one of the first few parents in the pick-up line at VME. Arriving early does seem to help speed up the process.
SAVE THE DATE - UPCOMING EVENTS 5th Annual iSTEM Conference: October 3, 2015, 9 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., Golden Gate High School (2925 Titan Way) Virtual Town Hall Meeting on Social Media: October 27, 2015, 6:00 p.m., Martin Luther King Jr. Administrative Center (5775 Osceola Trail)
The kids appear to be paying attention better at the beginning of dismissal. Near the end of dismissal, I witnessed a lot of kids just chatting away with their friends while their name blasted out of the loudspeaker several times. Speaking of paying attention, I did see a lot of parents on their phones in the car line. I will admit that I am someone who loves to multitask, but based on what I saw in my research, the car line is really not the place to do more than one thing at a time. Finally, let’s talk numbers. “We’ve added four more loading stations and more staff to help deal with the increase,” explains Barb DePouw, Assistant Principal at VME. Staff members at both VME and LOE tell me they have seen an increase in car riders this year. “This is probably the longest car line we’ve ever had,” explains Christina Anderson, Assistant Principal at LOE. Anderson noted an increase in enrollment for LOE this year, especially in Kindergarten, but she is hopeful that relief from the lengthy car line is around the corner. “It gets better, usually by December everyone gets the routine down.”
School Car Line Tips: 1. Obey the crosswalks 2. Slow down. 3. Arrive early. 4. Pay attention! No multitasking. 5. Be patient. 10

COLLIER COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD UPDATE

Florida Schools Earn A-F Grades, Just Like Students
W
hen making decisions about schools for their children, parents often look to Florida’s A-F school grades as a source of information. Why? Everyone understands the difference between an A and an F. It’s clearer and more transparent than a fuzzy indicator like a percentage or a “high performing” label, and most parents are not looking up raw test scores and making comparisons. School grading, which started in 1999, transformed the way Floridians understand school performance. Its key premise: grade schools just like we grade students. Most school accountability systems in other states use vague labels or numerical values. However, when a Florida school earns an A-F letter grade, it forces the public to pay attention. When Florida first released school grades about 15 years ago, the Department of Education’s website saw a huge interest in site visits, even during the internet age’s infancy. And parents still want to know how their schools are doing. A-F is one way to give them the information they deserve. There is a lot that goes into a grade. School grades are primarily determined by student test scores and annual learning gains in key subject areas. This has helped guard against children getting passed along from grade to grade without them learning the material. Sadly, history shows some schools set lower expectations for some students prior to A-F school grading. School grades also help the state identify struggling schools so they can receive the help and resources they need. As grades rise and fall, sometimes as expected, education leaders can assess whether state and local policies and interventions are working. They can also serve to hold school systems and elected officials like me accountable to taxpayers whose funds pay for education (the largest part of the state budget). Florida’s student achievement has improved dramatically since we began to grade schools. In 1999, nearly half of Florida’s third graders could not read and NEAPOLITANfamily • October 2015
School grades are primarily determined by student test scores and annual learning gains in key subject areas.
Florida’s graduation rate was barely above 50 percent. Now, our graduation rate is at an all-time high. We are third in the nation in the number of students who take Advanced Placement coursework. And we’ve cut in half the number of third graders who cannot read. While all of this is good news, we still have farther to go. Our state’s 8th graders ranked 34th in Reading and 38th in Math on the National Center for Education Statistics 2013 Assessments. Among states with the highest participation rates on national college entrance exams, Florida’s scores ranked 11 out of 16 on the SAT and 18 out of 20 on the ACT in 2013. Collier County Schools typically align with the Florida average, giving you an idea of where our schools would fall nationally. This is why now, more than ever, we need to measure and report school performance in a clear, objective way. We can expect this topic to be at the forefront in our next legislative session, as discussion over the appropriate type and amount of standardized testing in our schools continues. The information that goes into a school grade is only helpful if it’s presented
in a way that parents and the general public can understand. Letter grades are a clear summary in their own right, but what if a parent wants to understand how or why a school earned its grade? How does teacher retention look? How many students are reading on grade level? What are the gains in math each year? That’s why state and local leaders must be thoughtful about the design and layout of every school’s “report card.” Some nonprofit organizations are attempting to tackle this problem by gathering and sharing ideas on best practices for reporting school performance data. Visit www. myschoolinfochallenge.com to check out one such project. When parents have more information to make decisions and get involved in their children’s education, we all win. Let’s keep improving and keep shining a light on learning in our schools. ERIKA DONALDS is a mother of three boys and a member of the Collier County School Board since 2014. NEW MOM’S CORNER
By Anna Futrell
Battling the Post-Baby Bulge
B
ecoming a mom is not for the faint of heart. New parents will all agree – life changes in an instant when your first baby is born. As a new mom of an 11-month-old-girl, becoming a parent was the most challenging transition of my life. In this new monthly column, I will provide resources, encouragement, and ideas for new moms raising their little ones in Southwest Florida. As a new mom, do you struggle with feeling overwhelmed? The daily task list for any mom with an infant is a mile long. Feeding, changing, and getting to know your new bundle of joy coupled with the never-ending grind of housework can weigh you down. Add to that sleep deprivation and the recovery process following childbirth, and it’s enough to drive anyone crazy. Many new moms struggle to exercise and eat right. For many of us, too, losing the baby weight can be difficult. Lots of new moms choose to nurse their babies, and, even with the extra calorie burn (estimated 300-500 calories per day), still struggle to fit into their pre-baby clothing. What’s a mom to do? Fortunately, there are group workout classes in Naples focused on helping new
12
neafamily.com
moms regain their strength and confidence – not to mention their pre-baby bodies. Here is what I discovered when I tried both workouts. Pure Barre Naples Pure Barre – located on the corner of Goodlette-Frank Road and Pine Ridge Road – is a small workout studio that offers group classes seven days per week. These classes combine a barre/ballet style workout with core-focused Pilates strength training. Each workout class provides a similar format, though the exercises change with each class. Pure Barre in Naples offers a special package of classes specifically for new moms called the Baby Bounce Back Package, which costs $395 for three months of unlimited classes. My first experience with Pure Barre was difficult, as the pace of each class is very fast. Try committing to taking 10 classes before determining if this is the workout for you. Pure Barre co-owner Olga Zelaya stresses the studio’s focus on helping new moms regain strength following child birth. “Bouncing back after having a baby can be more difficult than many new moms expect. Pure Barre is an effective way to lose weight and regain that core muscle
tone that was stretched to the limit during pregnancy. Its low impact format makes it safe to attend class every day.” Pure Barre can be an intimidating environment for a new mom who has not regained her core strength yet, though Zelaya describes the family atmosphere they seek to foster at the studio. “We all support and encourage each other. Classes are attended by those of all ages and shapes, and the teachers are friendly, helpful and understanding.” Strong and confident During her pregnancy with twins, Kate Anderson of Naples had to take a break from working out. When her twin boys were two months old, she returned to Pure Barre. “I was a nervous wreck with my post-baby body,” Kate says. “I walked into my first class and was welcomed with such encouragement and positivity. I walked out feeling like I had conquered the world! Ten months later, I am back to feeling strong, confident, full of energy and happy! It’s the one part of my day that is just for me, and I cherish it.” For more information on Pure Barre Naples, contact Zelaya at olga@purebarre.com.

Baby Boot Camp Baby Boot Camp is a unique circuit training style stroller fitness class where moms workout with their babies in tow. Classes are offered throughout the week outdoors at the Mercato in Naples. Baby Boot Camp offers a 12-month contract of unlimited classes for $66 per month, a month-to-month option with unlimited classes for $86 per month, as well as an eight-class package for $96. You can take your first class for free. Baby Boot Camp’s trainers are nationally certified fitness instructors with pre-/post-natal certifications. The program incorporates a full body workout with cardio drills, strength training exercises, core work, stretching, and functional movements. Trying out Baby Boot Camp was a pleasure – the workout was challenging, and I got to know other moms. Bringing my baby with me to the one-hour class was a unique joy and challenge. “Bring lots of snacks next time,” one of the moms told me. Naples and Estero franchise owner Courtney Williams was the class instructor the day I attended. She loves helping new moms develop increased fitness levels and regain their strength, while fostering community amongst moms. “Our program is not only a fitness program but also a moms’ group, where moms build lasting friendships.” Williams says. “We have coffee dates, play dates, book clubs, and moms’ nights out. Moms love having the opportunity to get together regularly and be with other like-minded women, who feel health and fitness are a part of their lives along with raising their children in this atmosphere.” William’s passion for moms in this community stems from her experience as a trainer as well as her own journey as a mom. “As a mom of three, I understand how important it is to be healthy for ourselves and for our children to see us living these healthy lives. I know how lonely motherhood can be; I want moms in our community to know they are not alone.” Baby Boot Camp – Mother Love Fitness Challenge Each February, Baby Boot Camp offers a three-month Mother Love Fitness Challenge (MOLO) that features a daily calendar of nutritional strategies and weekly exercises. Jen Kass of Naples completed challenge in February of 2015. “MOLO gave me the push I needed to help me lose the last of my baby weight and make me feel good about myself again,” Jen says. For more information about Baby Boot Camp email Courtney.williams@babybootcamp.com. As a new mom in Naples, you don’t have to feel alone in your health and wellness journey! Check out the options we have for post-natal fitness in our community. To all the new moms out there, enjoy the journey as you develop lifelong healthy habits for you and your growing family! ANNA FUTRELL relocated to Naples from Chicago in 2007. She has a bachelor’s in English and Secondary Education from Wheaton College, and has written website content for various publications and businesses. Anna married her husband, Jim (a passionate fisherman and SW Florida native), in 2012 and became a mom when her daughter, Windley, was born in 2014. She is passionate about writing, cooking, running, playing the piano, and encouraging other new moms in their journey. NEAPOLITANfamily • October 2015

Fun Games to Play at the Dinner Table
F
inally carved out a night for your family to sit down and eat a meal together? Now that you’re all present, make meal time playful and fun with games, sure to spark conversation between you and your children and strengthen your relationship with one another. The benefits of family mealtime. “We no longer plant vegetables or quilt on the front porch together so meal time is one of the few times of the day when a family connects with one another,” says Dr. Anne Fishel, author of Home for Dinner: Mixing Food, Fun and Conversation for a Happier Family and Healthier Kids. Eating dinner together also provides parents with a valuable opportunity to model basic face-to-face social skills and etiquette. These skills are increasingly important to develop in an era where much of our children’s communication is conducted through technology. And speaking of technology, designate meal time as tech-free to ensure that your family’s full attention is on each other. “If family members are distracted by checking their phones and other screens, they miss out on the chance to really focus on each other, and convey that essential message–’you come first,’” Fishel says. Need help getting the conversation going and lightening up the dinnertime hour? Try a few of these games that your kids, from preschoolers to teens, are sure to embrace.
1
Two truths and a false. Not only does this game appeal to my children’s creativity and imaginations, I can usually learn something new about their day that they forgot to tell me. To play, go around the table and take turns sharing two events that really happened that day and one that did not. Who can guess which one is false?
2
Draw forth a discussion. Christie Zemencik, a mom of three, ages 20, 16 and 9, says she covers the table with butcher paper and puts crayons out. “My girls draw or write random things that usually lead to conversations as to why that was on their minds,” she says.
3
High-Lo. Adrienne Dreher, a mom of two boys, ages 8 and 5 says that she and her boys discuss the ups and downs of the day to get conversation rolling. “What was the best thing that happened to you today? What was the hardest?”
4
Conversation in a jar. Karen Conklin, mom of three, ages 10, 8 and 4, created a jar with dinnertime conversation starters on strips of paper. “An example is ‘Name two people that made you smile today and why,” she says. Her children enjoy adding conversation ideas to the jar, too.
5
Table topics. Julie Melchior, a mom of three children, ages 16, 13 and 10, says she purchased a pack of Christmasthemed conversation questions one year. Each night the family selected a card to discuss. “The kids couldn’t wait to sit down and get the cards passed out,” Melchior says. “It was so interesting for my husband and me to listen to their answers and hear what they remembered from their past holidays. It gave everyone an opportunity to share and listen and we talked about things that probably wouldn’t come up in normal dinner time conversation.” Find Kid Talk: Conversation Cards, Crunch a Color Conversation Starters, Chat Packs or Table Topics at area retailers, book stores or online. The Blue Zones Project in Collier County Public Schools
I
n October 2014, Collier County (as well as South Lee County) became a part of the Blue Zones Project, which is sponsored by the NCH Healthcare System. The Blue Zones Project encourages healthy living principles among the residents and businesses of Southwest Florida. It is a community-centered program that seeks to create a common goal among our residents: the pursuit of longevity through healthy, fulfilling lifestyle choices. What, exactly, is a Blue Zone? Research conducted by National Geographic magazine pinpointed five regions of the world where people live to be centenarians at higher-than- average rates. These regions include Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica; Loma Linda, California; Ikaria, Greece; Sardinia, Italy; and Okinawa, Japan. The residents of these regions had nine lifestyle commonalities that have been dubbed the “Power 9.” (See side bar.)
The Blue Zones Project has become a popular movement, with various community organizations adopting these nine principles by encouraging individuals to make healthier choices, and businesses and local government to pursue a “Blue Zones” designation. Here in Collier County, the Blue Zones Project’s local staff (established and funded by NCH) continues to meet with area businesses and community groups to garner support for the project. “Blue Zones Project is a national, community well-being improvement initiative, designed to help people live longer and happier lives, with lower rates of chronic disease and a higher quality of life,” says Allen S. Weiss, M.D., president and chief executive officer of NCH Healthcare System. “The NCH Healthcare System is excited to bring the Blue Zones initiative to Southwest Florida so that our community can, over time, decrease the need for healthcare, improve our

economy, and become a national exemplar for healthy living.” As the Blue Zones Project and NCH seek to accomplish these goals, they have recently gained school board approval to pilot an education-based initiative called The Blue Zones School Pledge in four schools in Naples: Sea Gate Elementary School, Lake Park Elementary School, Gulf View Middle School, and Naples High School. The goal is for these four schools, and eventually all Collier County Public schools, to be designated as Blue Zone Schools. This designation involves collecting a certain number of points, which can be earned through a variety of school-wide policies and programs. Objections While some school board members did object to the project, voicing concern about implementing another non-academic program that theoretically limits parent choices, the school board approved the Blue Zones Project’s first phase. When the Blue Zones Project was first introduced as an initiative for Collier County Public Schools, there was some resistance in the community as well, though Deb Millsap, executive director of the Blue Zones Project, indicates it was from a small percentage of area parents. “We are not sure why any parent would be against an initiative that focuses on improving student health, as we know healthy students have a higher capacity to learn. There seems to be a misunderstanding amongst some that this project will take parents’ rights away. To the contrary,” Millsap explains, “this project provides more choices – specifically more healthy choices.” The goal is to make the healthy choice the easy choice for students. “Increased exposure to junk food advertis-
ing, decreased rates of students who walk to school, less physical activity during the school day, and significant amounts of time spent in sedentary screen-time behavior have created an environment which makes the healthy choice difficult for our youth,” Millsap points out. Wellness teams At each school, a wellness team, which includes staff and parent representatives, will work with the principal to decide which initiatives to implement. The Blue Zones Project team then will help the wellness teams determine how to measure progress. The Blue Zones Project staff has been invited by each of the schools to attend various staff and parent meetings to educate and provide input. Possible wellness initiatives include making healthy options more prevalent
in school cafeterias, school-wide policies limited specific types of snacks and drinks during the school day, limitations on the use of vending machines, and discontinuing the use of food as rewards and physical activity as consequences/punishments. And many of these policies already are in place in schools across Collier County. For example, schools are not able to use food-based fundraisers; additionally, the school district already purchases locally grown produce for use in cafeterias, and many schools have community gardens on site. The Blue Zones Project initiative will roll out in six phases over the course of several years, eventually affecting all Collier County public schools. Parents can expect to see changes in individual school’s activities, as well as system-wide policy and procedure changes.

RACHEL RECOMMENDS
Book Reviews
RACHEL NEWMAN is 10 years old and in the fifth grade at Sea Gate Elementary. She is active in Irish dancing, piano, flute, acting and softball. Writing and reading are two of her great joys, along with watching I Love Lucy. She would like to thank Lyn Hunter for helping her with this review.
Review of Three Times Lucky by Shelia Turnage
M
oses is an orphan, but she thinks her mother is still alive. This brave, funny, adventurous sixth grader is being raised by Miss Lana and the Colonel. Mo says what she wants to say, has a crush on her best friend’s (Dale) big brother, and writes and draws the story of her life, called “The Piggly Wiggly Chronicles”. Mo’s life was good, until her neighbor Mr. Jesse was found in his boat, not breathing. Detective Joe Starr and Deputy Marla take charge of the crime scene. Mo and Dale created The Desperado Detectives to solve the murder on their own, and end up running and jumping over different obstacles throughout this murder mystery. Mo doesn’t know if she can handle it all with detectives on every corner. I walked around my house with “Three Times Lucky” glued to my face. The book is a bit boring at the beginning, but my teacher, Mrs. Cliff, tells me to wait and give books a chance. So here I am, sitting and writing a review on a book that I thought was a slow starter! I love how this book is a murder mystery, but you hardly notice how scary it is because you truly get into the book. The descriptions are so colorful that you could really see what was happening through Mo’s eyes. The book really makes you think about things: it helped me understand that bad things like murders and kidnappings can happen, but that good things can happen, too. I think that every child should have this lesson, so enjoy and understand this phenomenal book. Because of the murder and kidnapping, I think that kids should be at least 10 years old before reading “Three Times Lucky”. But older people will love it, too. I can’t wait to read more by books by Sheila Turnage. Luckily for me, “Three Times Lucky” is the first in a series of three books. I never wanted the book to end, and it shan’t, as I will be reading the “Ghosts in Tupelo Landing” next. If you have suggestions for books for Rachel to review, e-mail your suggestions to: rachel.v.newman@outlook.com. 18

HOLIDAYS
By Meagan Ruffing
Bringing Halloween Home 12 awesome ideas to get your family ready for Halloween
T
he month of October would not be complete without the smell of apple cider and pumpkin spice. Bringing these things as well as many others into your home can be an easy and (fun) way to get into the fall craze. Try just a few of these suggestions or go down the list and do all of them with your kiddos. Chances are, you will have just as much fun carving those pumpkins as they will.
1.
PUMPKINS. Grab your kids and head to your local pumpkin patch. (See our list on pages 3841). Once you pick out the perfect pumpkin, carve it up into a spooky face for your front forch or patio. Set up your jack-o-lanterns once they are all done and light them up with battery operated tea lights for a fun and glowing-filled night.
3. 2.
CARAMEL APPLES. These delicious treats are quite easy to make. Grab a bag of apples from the grocery store and a bag of caramel candies. Heat the candies in a large pot until you can stir with a creamy/syrupy consistency and dunk your apples one at a time using a skewer cut in half and poked into the apple as your handle. Let your kids decorate with whatever candy they would like. A few ideas for toppings would be crushed nuts, coconut flakes, chocolate chips, rainbow or chocolate sprinkles, crushed cookies and M&Ms.
4.
DECORATIONS. The dollar store has some great decorations for next to nothing. What kid doesn’t like to hang fake cobwebs from their doorway? Grab a few pumpkin printed trash bags to hold your leaves, spider webs for the front entryway and paper mice to tape onto your stairwell and you will have the whole neighborhood wanting to come and see your house this Halloween night.
APPLE CIDER. Take a couple of spice sticks and toss them in a pot of apple cider. Bring that to a low boil/slow simmer and let the aroma of Autumn waft through your house. When you’re ready to drink the cider, take the spice sticks out and pour into special tea cups for your kids to enjoy.

5.
FALL BREADS. Pumpkin bread, banana bread, zucchini bread and spice bread are a few of the season’s favorite treats. This is a great way to get your kids to eat breakfast in the morning and they’re getting a nice portion of fruit and vegetables in their bread depending on what you make. Let your little ones help you buy having them measure out the flour and whisking the eggs. They will feel really good about themselves and chances are, they will be more likely to help you with future recipes in the kitchen.
6.
CANDY. A bowl of candy corn, peanuts, M&Ms and popcorn is the perfect Halloween mix for any sweet tooth. To turn the candy into a pretty Halloween decoration that will last through the holiday, layer several different types of Halloween candy in a tall, wide mouthed glass container with a lid.
7.
COSTUMES. Halloween costumes aren’t just for Halloween night. Let your kids get out their old costumes and dress up to their hearts’ delight before the big night. Save the actual costume they will be wearing this year for the big night but let them have fun, explore and use their imaginations from collective pieces in year’s past.
8.
COSTUME SWAP. Now that you have the costumes out, consider swapping with your friends
or neighborhood. Pick a date and time to bring the costumes to a central location in your neighborhood and take home the same number of costumes that you brought. Consider donating the leftover costumes to a local agency serving needy families.
9.
PARTY EARLY. Schedule your Halloween party for the weekend before and you’ll still be able to go trick or treating with the kids on the actual day. You’ll find a ton of creative party tips at neafamily. com. Just click the Halloween link on the home page.
12.
FACE PAINTING. Last but not least, paint that face. Who says face painting is only for carnivals, fairs and festivals? This is the perfect time to whip out your cosmetic skills and draw your little girl a heart or tiara on her plump, soft cheek. Even the clumsiest of artists can draw a simple heart or flower on a child’s cheek and your child will love it!
MEAGAN RUFFING is a freelance parenting writer living in northwest Arkansas. She looks forward to hearing what her kids want to dress up as this year and letting them eat more candy than they should on Halloween.
10.
WELCOME GUESTS. A welcome mat can seem like such a simple thing but it is the first thing your visitors will see upon entering your home. Head to your hardware store or department store and pick up a cute, whimsical doormat. Not only will it look nice to have something new and in season outside your home but it will give your place an inviting feel to all who show up for trick or treating.
11.
ENTERTAINMENT. Plan a movie night or two with the family. Our top Halloween flicks include: Garfield’s Halloween Adventure (1985); Hocus Pocus (1993); Hotel Transylvania (2012); It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966); Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride (2005); Twitches (2005); and Under Wraps (1997).
