During his time in Europe, he developed an appreciation for artists such as Pierre Alechinsky and Karel Appel and was so moved by the prevalent abstract expressionist movement that upon returning to Houston, he decided to become an artist. Wray was instrumental in developing Houston’s budding contemporary art scene, along with his peers Jim Love, James Boynton, and Harvey Bott, among others. Always experimenting with new media and techniques, Wray continued to evolve as an artist throughout his long and robust career. His works are conserved in many public collections including the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

(2 pcs.) [$4000/6000] Note: Texas artist, designer, poet and college professor, Austin Allen James is well-known for his work in crushed pigments, oil, acrylic, resin and mixed media. Organic by nature, his paintings highlight color and movement through lyrical brushwork and textural surfaces. The artist describes his work: “My art is diaphanous and ghostly, allowing for spheres of meditation. Each piece mimics motion standing in place.”; The large-scale diptych offered here is color field painting at its most expressive; a harmonious and timeless statement in a sophisticated and neutral palette. Note: “I think all good art speaks to the human spirit. Sometimes it’s technically involved and sometimes it’s not technically involved. If the technique is not used in the service of the intent, it doesn’t matter.” - Richard Jolley
Glass artist Richard Jolley explores all manner of natural and scientific subject matter in his mixed media creations. Jolley, who received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, has participated in over 64 solo exhibitions both nationally and internationally and has been awarded a variety of accolades, including being the youngest visual artist to receive the Tennessee Governor’s Distinguished Artist Award.
In the lot offered here, a metal cage contains the silhouette of a man with a target on his shoulder. Beneath him, enclosed in the bottom half of the cage, is an array of beautifully blown glass balls of all sizes and hues. The combination of rough, industrial textures with the smooth, fragile orbs creates a perilous visual discourse, and the resulting effect is one of both tension and intrigue. 91

Karl Wirsum (American/Chicago, 1939-2021), “Frances Faye in Frenzy”, 1961, oil and oil crayon on canvas, signed and dated lower center, titled and dated on stretcher, 18 in. x 24 1/8 in., framed. [$4000/6000] Provenance: The artist; Paul McCarron; Terenchin Gallery, Hudson, NY; Private Collection, FL.
Note: Karl Wirsum’s stylized approach to figural painting has held an influential role within American underground cultural aesthetics since the mid-1960s. A member of the Hairy Who, an irreverent group of Chicago-based artists who exhibited together from 1966-1969, Wirsum enrolled at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1957 and was the first of the Hairy Who artists to graduate. Wirsum studied with Kathleen Blackshear, an eccentric art historian who mentored Whitney Halstead and was instrumental to the development of the rest of the Hairy Who.

[$2500/3500] Provenance: Jonathan Ferrara Gallery, New Orleans, LA.
Note: An encaustic artist based in New Orleans and widely exhibited nationally, Miranda Lake received a Bachelor of Arts in art history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, followed by studies at Parsons School of Design and the London College of Fashion. Lake’s work is inspired by her many travels and the cycles of nature such as life and death and decay and renewal. Through her trademark photo encaustic collage process, Lake finds beauty in hardship and prefers to let viewers interpret her mysterious subjects as they will, rarely divulging her own explanations. The work offered here is the perfect example, as it appears at once both fantastical and surreal with a dark thematic composition punctuated by images of innocent children.
