Twelve auctions, more than 7,000 items offered, a freshly redesigned website, a new phone app launch, and exceedingly strong sales results…we had a big year! 2021 proved to be a strong year for Neal Auction Company, despite the ongoing challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. We pivoted to a more online-focused approach to auctioneering and saw solid results from our online-only UNRESERVED auctions. We presented dedicated sales for Modern & Contemporary Art & Design, Presidential Memorabilia & Coins, and a special solo artist auction of works by acclaimed painter Hunt Slonem, which all contributed to our successful year. The Estate of Julia Reed brought astounding attention from her adoring friends and fans, and we continued to achieve impressive results in our trademarked Louisiana Purchase AuctionTM showcase, which annually features Southern regional art, antiques, and exquisite examples of Louisiana furniture. HUNTSLONEM Neal Auction is the auction venue most associated with the work of celebrated American artist Hunt Slonem. In March of 2021, Neal Auction hosted its first single-artist auction of over 75 works by Slonem with a 100% sell-through rate and world record prices.
Through his mastery of line and distinctive mark-making, Slonem combines aspects of abstract expressionism with representation in a riotous array of color and media that remains true to his personal practice while making him enormously successful worldwide with collectors and critics alike. Slonem’s prolific career has resulted in an astonishing body of work featuring vibrant bunnies, birds, butterflies and more. Though based in New York, Slonem has deep ties to Louisiana. The artist spends time each month in his three historic Louisiana homes, reaffirming a fascination with the state that began during his time at Tulane University.

CLEMENTINE HUNTER Since its inception in 1984, Neal Auction has sold nearly 1,000 Clementine Hunter works — more than any other venue globally. In 2021, Neal Auction sold 73 Hunter pieces at a 100% sell-through rate, achieving record prices, and further establishing Neal Auction as the premier venue for the sale of Clementine Hunter art. Clementine Hunter (1886 – 1988) was a self-taught artist from the Cane River region of Louisiana who lived and worked on Melrose Plantation near Natchitoches. After working for decades as a farm laborer, Hunter began painting in her fifties and captured vibrantly animated scenes of African American life along the Cane River. Often referred to as the “Black Grandma Moses,” Hunter’s prolific colorful paintings became highly sought-after and garnered national attention. Clementine Hunter pieces are held in multiple prestigious institutional collections, including the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the American Folk Art Museum, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts, among many others.
