This course emphasizes traditional geometry topics such as lines, angles, polygons and circles. In addition to the discovery of geometric relationships, students’ investigations also develop cooperative learning and problem-solving skills.

PREPARATION FOR AP CALCULUS AB Ages:

Open to Laurel students who have completed Trigonometry and Precalculus or Honors Precalculus Dates: July 13 - 31 Time: 9:00 am - 11:00 am (Monday - Friday) Instructor: Upper School Mathematics Department Faculty Format: One, three-week session; half-day Location: Laurel’s Lyman Campus in Shaker Heights Tuition: $675

Students will be asked to complete a significant amount of independent study outside of the class sessions in order to use class time for exploration. A typical class session may include group explorations, presentations of new material, individual and small-group practice and/or assessments. A passing grade on a final, end-of-course exam is required to earn high school credit. Students completing this course are prepared for Algebra II.

The goal of this three-week intensive course is two-fold. First, students will refine their Precalculus skills in order to prepare for the rigor of AP Calculus AB. Precalculus topics such as solving a variety of equations, analyzing graphs of functions, and interpreting results in application problems will be reviewed and deepened. Second, the course will cover the first unit of the AP Calculus AB curriculum “Limits and Continuity”. This in-depth study will prepare Laurel students who took Trig/Precalculus to join AP Calculus AB with the expected prior knowledge. This course is specifically designed to help Trig/Precalculus transition to AP Calculus AB but any Precalculus student preparing for AP Calculus is welcome to join. *Students should expect to do some independent work outside of class and take a few in-class, written assessments.

Ms. Klotz will facilitate reflective writing and small group conversation about all aspects of motherhood. Dr. Damour will lead book group discussions of her two New York Times bestsellers Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls Through the Seven Transitions Into Adulthood and Under Pressure: Confronting the Epidemic of Stress and Anxiety in Girls.
