Welcome to Majura Football Club 2010. Majura FC is a volunteer club with almost 1200 junior players. I’d like to thank all members of the Committee for their outstanding support in ensuring our players get to play each weekend, with goals in place, refs on the park and food to be eaten when the game is done. As football continues to develop across Australia, Majura FC continues to move forward. Technical Direction at Majura Technical Director Paul Whittingham is aiming to focus the football development side of the club in coming months/years. We’ve already started a couple of initiatives with the U7s development program returning, a new development pathway for boys and girls at u10, and our in-season Coerver program. Check out the Coaching pages for more details on these and details of our new Coaching Bulletin.

Majura FC/Canberra Olympic Partnership We are about to sign a Memoranda of Association with our Senior Partner Club, Canberra Olympic FC. Olympic now train at Dickson giving a clear pathway for our junior boys. In the coming weeks we will see Olympic players forming a buddy relationship: supporting, encouraging or assisting with coaching our younger players. Our relationship with Olympic will provide player pathways for all our boys and girls in years to come. And check out the great writing and thoughts on football in this newsletter from the people who matter at Majura FC, our players. Enjoy the games and thanks to everyone for their support. Rhonda Parkin, President AND did you know: First Australian World Cup flag seen across Canberra? Rhonda Parkin was spotted flying the Socceroos flag on May 25th. Although after the team played so poorly against New Zealand, rumour has it she considered changing it to a Kiwi flag!

Over 200 teams have entered this year’s Kanga Cup including a number of Majura teams. Teams such as Adelaide City (SA), Richmond (VIC), Bankstown Strikers (NSW), Forrestfield (WA), North Queensland Crocs (QLD) and Hobart FC (TAS) had already confirmed their participation alongside a plethora of local Canberra teams, representatives from New Zealand and ShinGok from South Korea who return to the McDonald’s Kanga Cup for the fifth successive year. Tournament manager, Adam Castle, was ecstatic with the everexpanding entry list. “Reaching the milestone of 200 teams is a massive achievement for us; it demonstrates that the McDonald's Kanga Cup brand is as strong as ever,” Castle said.

Majura Pitch Newsletter of Majura Football Club The World Cup According to Majura FC u12 Jackson Clement McNee I was only 8 when I discovered the World Cup. That was an unfortunate year for Australia ending with Fabio Grosso (Italy) in the box. But before that when Australia scored three goals in 8 minutes against Japan was one of my best memories - not just of the World Cup but ever! I also think the game for third between Portugal and Germany was a great game – one of the best I have ever seen. I think the best players of the last World Cup were Timmy Cahill(Australia) and Ronaldhino(Brazil). I also remember Wayne Rooney (England) being the youngest player to score a goal at a World Cup. Now to this World Cup. I want Australia to win the World Cup. But if it can’t be Australia (which it probably won’t) then I want an African nation to win – Ghana but not Cote d’Ivoire (because I just don’t like Didier Drogba, Chelsea). But I think the country with the best chance of winning is Spain because Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid) and Xavi Hernandez (Barcelona) are the best midfield pair in the world and if they control the midfield they will get the ball to the best striking pair in the world – Fernando Torres (Liverpool)and David Villa (Real Madrid). Also their defence – Carles Puyol (Barcelona) and Gerard Pique(Barcelona) – are not too shabby. As always I think Brazil will be their main challengers – assuming they survive the group of death. I think their wide players – Kaka (Real Madrid) and Robinho (Santos) – will open the play up and get the ball in for Luis Fabiano (Sevilla FC). They also have one of the best keepers in the world – Julio Cesar (Inter Milan). Argentina could win if wasn’t for Diego Maradonna. Great players – terrible manager. For Australia, my hope is that they will get to the round of 16. To do this, their spine will have to be excellent – Mark Schwarzer (Fulham)in goal; Lucas Neill (Galatasary) and Craig Moore (no club)at the back; Timmy Cahill and Jason Culina (Gold Coast United) controlling the midfield; and Harry Kewell (Galatasary) up front with Josh “Jesus” Kennedy (Grampus Nagoya) off the bench. I predict a draw against Germany; a win against Ghana; and good old one/two against Serbia. I think the three players to watch will be Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Wayne Rooney (Man Utd)and Ces Fabragas (Arsenal). Messi will dazzle with his pace, skill, control and vision. Rooney because of his great instincts in the box. Fabragas – before being injured – was having a great season with Arsenal and will be keen to impress. I am sure this World Cup will have lots of twists and turns, but I hope I have summed it up well for you. Written by Jackson Clement McNee www.majurafc.org.au

Did you know Australia could qualify from their World Group with just one goal and two points!

Majura FC U12s after their recent win over Radford College. Coach Rob Janssens isn’t just happy because of the win, he’s off to South Africa to get some coaching tips from the best.

Iesha Flores reviews the season so far. Under 12 reds 2010, what are we looking forward to this season ? I’m guessing we’d like many wins during the season or draws but hopefully not too many losses. We are a great team to work with. We have just become used to the size of the field, and all the rules including the offside. We have improved a lot working with each other. We have progressed through 4 games at the moment and have done a good job. Unfortunately we have lost 2 games but on the bright side we have won 2. In this awesome team, headed by our Coach Rob Janssens, we have Chloe Bosworth, Eliza Garnett, Ellen Leslie, Hannah Janssens, Erin Hyde, Isabella Moth, Jodie Kirkness, Keeley Gilfillan, Lucy Spencer, Monica Macor, (cont next page)

Erin Hyde reviews Majura FC 4 Radford 0: Jackson McNee: on the Socceroos. Ellen Leslie: A National Champ. Sarah Richardson on Thunder.

On the 22nd of May my team, the Majura Reds, played against Radford. We only had 11 players, so we didn't have any substitutions, but luckily late in the first half Grace Maher and Eilis Fitt from the Under 11s Red team played for us.

Iesha Flores and Erin Hyde talk u12.

We didn't know what to expect and were wary at first, but eventually we got into our rhythm. In the first half of the match Jodie Kirkness scored one goal and I scored two, then in the second half Lucy Spencer scored us a fourth.

Check out the Primary School Soccer Trials. Some High School players can qualify.

That match was our second win of the season and hopefully we'll win lots more! By Erin Hyde

Player Profile: Ellen Leslie Ellen represented the ACT at her first Futsal National Championships in January 2010. Majura Under 12 Red, and ACT Futsal Under 11s. Ellen has played football at Majura for five years. She started with the boys then switched to the U11 girls team last season coached by Paul Macor and Rob Janssens. Ellen tried out for the ACT Futsal team in October last year. Two teams were preparing for the National Championships held in January in Canberra. “It was pretty tough,” reflects Ellen, “Fun and challenging but tough. The other teams were very good. It was pretty hard to get the ball off the other teams and stop them scoring.” NSW, Victoria, Western Australia all have strong teams and Ellen’s team had no “easy” games. “I trialled in September, I’d never played Futsal before, but I made the squad. We prepared hard. Training three times a week closer to the tournament, and then everyday just before. We really improved our ball skills. “I’d recommend it to anyone and I’ll be back next year. “My advice to anyone is to concentrate on your basic skills. Don’t try anything too fancy until you have the basics. (cont next page)
