Welcome to Majura Football Club 2010. It’s a World Cup year and Australia will be there! So will Majura Under 10 Tom Bigg-Wither and Under 12 Red Coach Rob Janssens and we wish them well. (for more, read the news section). And down at Dickson, Majura players from 3-18 will strut their stuff once more. Majura FC is a large Canberra community. With close to 1200 players, add in parents, grandparents, friends, refs and coaches and football brings a lot of people together on Dickson Oval. And a lot of work for our small but dedicated army of volunteers! Do take time to get involved in the club in some way. Why not assist your Coach at training or on game day, help out at the Canteen or volunteer for a job? There are many ways to do your bit. And for the more enthusiastic members on our sideline. watch the video below; and remember to let the kids play without your “expert” knowledge. It’s their time. Capital Football High Performance latest The Capital Football High Performance Program has limited spaces available in its winter squads for boys born in 2001 and girls born in 2001, 2000 and 1999. Trials for these positions will be held on the first two training sessions of the program. The details of the trials are as follows:

Emma Bestek stars at National Championships Well done to Majura Under 13 Opens Emma Bestek who was selected in the All Stars team to play NSW Metro, the winners of the recent Under 13 National Championships in Canberra. Hiwot Johnstone, Madelyn Whittall and Ruth Kravis all had a great tournament with Ruth a goal scorer against Queensland. (And that’s the girls’ photo on the front page!)

MORE NEWS, NEWS, NEWS. Who is the luckiest boy in the World? Just now it might be Tom Bigg-Wither, Majura U10, Tom is heading to South Africa for the World Cup. Wait there’s more. Tom won a McDonalds prize to walk out with the Socceroos when they play Ghana in our Group D game. We’ll be watching Tom, enjoy the trip of your life; and bring back the points!

Kanga Cup:

Matildas must win! The Matildas are off to the Asia Cup this month in China. They MUST come in the top three to qualify for the next World Cup, Germany 2011. And it will be tough, up against China and South Korea. All games live on ABC TV in May.

Last year we had 9 teams It’s time to get your teams together and register at www.kangacup.com The Kanga Cup is held in Canberra every year. This year it runs from 4 to 9 July 2010. There will be a 9 vs 9 player format for U10-U11 players with U12-U18 teams playing 11 vs 11. May 2010

Goodbye old Rego system, hello Austin! Ever been to an AGM? Hands up who wants to be the Registrar? Kelli Finlayson was the only hand up at the Majura FC AGM in 2008 and it would be fair to say Kelli didn’t have a clear idea of the responsibility involved. There was a “tried and trusted” Majura system that was used to store all player information that created reports and lists as we needed them. So Kelli followed it for the 2008 season, but it was slow. 2009 brought a change to the football world. The FFA decided to introduce a new National database called My Football Club. This database was being introduced as the new way to register players online and I guess we are all aware of it now. And Kelli reckons she clocked at least 50 hours at home manually re:keying everyone of the 1100 players for season 2009! And by September last year (yes the season was over) the final registration was complete, and Kelli’s thinking, “holy crap,” what have I got myself into! Her son, Austin was seeing less and less of her, and finding it hard to understand what a volunteer registrar role could mean. Mum spending hours in the study, nearly every evening plus on the weekends, was not his idea of fair, or fun. Kelli was focused. This year would be different she thought. She suggested, or “stubbornly pushed” Rhonda and the Majura committee to encourage all parents and players to use the online system for the 2010 season. And it worked! It may have been painful, to you the parent registering your player(s) online, but Kelli has all the Registrations complete for Season 2010, filed in the Clubhouse, and the season hasn’t even started. And next year, as a result, registration should be much easier for everyone. Kelli has led the way across Canberra. She has “loved being apart of the pioneer stage that has brought Majura forward”, and we're possibly the only junior football club in the ACT to use the database 100% for the 2010 season. Chris Tanzey, former Matildas Coach and long-time Canberra football identity says “You know the best thing for kids to improve their football is a wall. The wall doesn’t lie. It teaches kids to anticipate, and they learn to hit with both feet. And when the ball comes back to them they quickly learn to be on their toes.” Try it! Everyday for two weeks. With your ball stand 1-2 metres from the wall and simply hit the ball with your instep against the wall with your left and right, then both feet. One hundred passes (50 on each foot) against the wall each day and watch your touch and technique improve. (If you miss don’t re-start just carry on until you get to 100 and use both right and left foot.) And when you get competent you can move back. Here’s a game to play with a mate. 1-4-3-3 Explained. Australia has a new football curriculum. Actually it’s our first national curriculum ever! All States and Territory Rep teams will be following the same curriculum. And all our State and Territory Representative Teams and Coaches will be implementing the 1-4-3-3 system of play. So why not educate your players/coach today!

If a child can’t control the ball, how can he or she be expected to pass? A child needs to master the ball, to control it with left and right foot with comfort, and then passing becomes an option.

Don’t worry about tactics or team strategies Encourage the players to express themselves, to try and dribble rather than always passing the ball. U6-U10’s is the time for the player to learn how to master the ball. He/she needs to feel comfortable running with it, receiving etc. This should be the main focus of your training. (Grassroots Coaching, FFA.)

Lily Dawson is a Majura U9. Lily is one of the first Majura girls to go through the Capital Football High Performance Summer Program (HPP) which ran from October-March.

Lily has been playing football for Majura since she started Pee Wees at 3 years old. She has played in a mixed team since U7s ( U7 & 8 Owls - this year U9 Dugongs). Last year she also filled in for the U9/10 Whirlwinds in the girls competition after her U8 game.

Is football really a simple game? Fozzie says, “ 1,000 touches a day,” to master the ball. Robbie Hooker, exCanberra United Coach says 10,000 hours to be a Matilda!

What's the best thing(s) you like about football? It is fun. I get to run around a lot and kick the ball around. You are one of a few Majura girls who took part in the very first Capital Football High Performance Program. Why did you want to do it? I tried out because my brother was and because I wanted to improve my soccer skills. How did you get selected? Did you have to trial? Yes I had to trial at Hawker. We did some ball skills and played a game. How often did you train each week? Three times a week Monday, Wednesday at Kambah and Saturday at Hawker for an hour. Why should other girls do this program? (or not) Because it is fun and you get to participate in tournaments and run around. What was the best thing about the HPP program? Meeting other girls who play soccer. What did you think of the training pitch at Hawker? It was rough, fun and good. What other sports do you enjoy? Futsal, tennis and rugby. For the first time Majura FC U10s entered the Thunder Tournament held recently at Mawson Playing Fields. We took players from all of the Majura 2009 U9 teams and put together a team to enter into this competition.

Best practice warmup? You choose. 1. Chuck the shirts out and get the players on the field. 2. Line all players up and get them to shoot in turn. 3. Each player has a ball, introduce individual skills, small game, reminder of training/coaching focus, including drink and chat, 30 mins. www.majurafc.org.au

The boys had been training for 4 weeks before the big day but due to end of summer commitments had only had a few sessions where they trained as a team. They started off with Rhonda (Parkin) as coach but with her many commitments to the club she was very happy to hand over to Jason Thornton and he provided many stimulating sessions coming into the tournament. (Jason is a Capital Football High Performance Coach). Bob Parkin was the fantastic coach on the day and he led the boys through a really good performance on the field.

Majura FC Under 10s (Cont) All the boys arrived on Sunday morning very excited to be going into their first football tournament for Majura. At least three of the boys had spent the previous Sunday watching their older brothers in the Lightning tournament at the same fields and they were very happy to be the ones playing rather than watching. We had some good wins, many near misses and a few losses, all in all the boys played very well and by the end of the day were really starting to hold their positions, pass the ball and play some good football as a team. Overall we finished third in our pool and had a great day. Well done boys. We would all like to thank Rhonda and Bob Parkin and Jason Thornton for their time in helping prepare and coach the boys for the tournament. Of course we also need to give a big thank you to the parents who brought the boys and spent a very big day screaming support from the sideline.

Team: Under 11 Girls Red team (Mini Majura Matildas) Under 11s started training: Late March Games to date: Six games A few weeks ago my team, the Majura Reds, aka the Mini Majura Matildas, played against the Capital Football High Performance team at Hawker Stadium. It was my first time playing on artificial turf and it was really good because it cleaned your shoes off. The turf was extremely itchy when I fell over and the sun reflected off it but the ball ran smoothly and was easier to play on than on grass. Before the game I was really nervous because I thought they were going to be hard to play. It was tricky at first but then we started to get into it and Grace (Maher), Grace (Basser-Silk), and Eilis (Fitt) scored lots of goals and we won easily. It gave me confidence about the season ahead. After that we had a few training sessions, including one where we played the U12 Girls Red team. It was fun and a real challenge because they were very skilled. That got us prepared for the Lightning tournament where we played four games. We got into the finals but we didn’t play because some people had to leave. I reckon we still could have won it because we were going to play a fairly easy team. We won three games and tied one with BelNorth. I really enjoyed the tournament, especially because we got free passes for a sausage sandwich and a can of drink. I enjoyed playing but I’m kind of glad we didn’t play in the finals because I was so tired by the end of it. I think that I’m really lucky that I got into this great team with all my friends and I’m excited about the season ahead. May 2010

Isaac Hunter from Under 11 Silver team attended his second Coerver Academy over the summer months How long have you played football? 4 years, always with Majura. What is your favourite thing about football. It’s really fun and you make new friends. It takes your mind off things. Why did you enrol in Coerver? When I played soccer I used to just run and stuff. Coerver improves you, and teaches you new skills. At Coerver, we trained twice a week for an hour and a half, and also showed our skills at Canberra United games. In January I went to the Coerver Camp on the weekend. Players came from Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. I was selected to go to Japan from this camp. My favourite skill? The stepover. My favourite team? Barcelona, and Australia in the World Cup. Favourite Player? Lionel Messi, (Barcelona and Argentina.) Favourite Australian player? Tim Cahill (Everton and Australia.) Favourite things about Coerver? You get to meet lots of new people and do fun things, like goal shots and 2 v 2 games. I would recommend it to anyone who wants more football and to improve. What school do you go to? I go to Turner Primary School. In my Coerver group were my Turner friends Lucas and Tom (Bigg-Wither), Shae (Thornton) and Huell.

Robin Waring Shield Project Coordination Federation Cup Round 2 – Pool A Canberra City 4-1 Canberra Olympic Canberra City took a firm grip of Pool A of the Project Coordination Federation Cup with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Canberra Olympic and in the process collected the Robin Waring Shield at Hawker Football Centre. Goals from Pat Ross-Magee, Simon Gemmell, Adam Dobell and Misko Naumoski meant that Pat Caggiano’s team claimed the Robin Waring Shield, a memorial trophy named after the former Majura youth player who was known by many of the Canberra City squad. The emotion of the occasion certainly seemed to lift Canberra City as they responded to falling behind with a terrific display of heart and determination that surprised as much as it delighted the City following in the crowd. MATCH REACTION Pat Caggiano, Canberra City Coach: “The game obviously meant a lot to the players as many of them knew Robin and they turned up to play today. It was a great result for us.
