May 2011

See you on Saturday Welcome to Majura FC 2011 I’d like to thank everyone for their outstanding support in the lead up to the season. With 94 teams, over 1200 players and thousands of parents and supporters there is a lot of work from a lot of people to get teams on the field. We aim to provide all our players with opportunities to improve their skills. We have introduced changes to the Pee Wees game format for the 5/6 Age Group and many U7 teams are now meeting after school to train and play during the week. We have also utilised Paul Jones Goalkeeping Academy and Coerver Coaching to assist players who would like further development.. And if you’d like to contribute in some way to Majura FC please contact myself or a Committee member (Blue Coat on match days). We love ideas but we need more people to implement them! I’d encourage everyone to read the list of administration items in this newsletter to ensure everything goes smoothly for your son/daughter during the season. We hope you will continue to support your players, coaches, refs, volunteers and committee in the Majura way. Best wishes for the season, enjoy the football. Ashley Jackson Majura FC President

Football News, Football News, Football News Will Hunter, Ben Basser-Silk and Grace Basser-Silk all represented the ACT in Futsal at the Futsal Nationals in January. Ali Cook was also at the Futsal Nationals and then went on to score at the U13 outdoor National Championships last week in Canberra. Grace Maher was also in the team. The U13 Girls team will stay in the top group at next years Nationals as a result of their performances. No mean feat when you consider they had to play teams from NSW Metro, Victoria Metro and South Australia. Kai Thornton won a “Pele pack” from Australia’s favourite football magazine FourFourTwo. Don’t know Kai? He’s the one with the Pele boots! U10 Open took out top honours at the recent Woden Valley Lightning tournament. Not bad for a team who had never played outside of Dickson Oval. Clearly the practice on our weeds has helped their team play! Well done to all. Not to be outdone Jason Thornton’s U11 Open Red also gained top honours at the Lightning tournament with Chris Kemp’s U11 team putting in some great performances as well. Under 12 recruits: Mika Leslie has joined the club from Colorado, USA. And she scored her first goal in Australia at the Lightning tournament while her Dad nipped to Woolies to buy her a hair clip. Don’t worry Dad we think she’ll score again this year! Actually she did in her very next game. And if you think Majura players have to travel too far to play, Mika had to travel seven hours for a game occasionally and games often started at 7.30am in the USA!

And Yvonne Fafungian has signed up after arriving from Papua New Guinea. Yvonne had a wonderful Lightning tournament enjoying her first competive game of football.

Canberra Olympic: Our Senior Club Majura FC now has clear pathways for our boys and girls into Senior football; and even Majura mums have formed a team and are playing under the Olympic banner in 2011. With many Majura boys progressing to Canberra Olympic u16 men’s team in 2011 and our girls playing in U18 women’s team for the first time, all of our players can now benefit from this partnership. And we’ll keep you updated as we progress it.

I’m a Coach - but what do I do at training? There are many people at Majura who can assist with ideas, plans and suggestions. Coaching children at the end of a day can be hard, very hard on a cold winter night. But it can be very rewarding and heaps of fun. 1. Be organised. Have a plan. Every week! And review what worked, what didn’t. 2. Get some parent support at training. They can assist with crowd control or even the technique in the younger age groups - even one extra parent can be a great help. 3. Take a FFA grassroots course - it’s free. Go to Capital Football Coaching 4. Email: vpfootball@majurafc.org.au and we’ll aim to get someone to assist you.

Follow @majuraresults and why not tweet your score and scorers this season.

5. And view the game on Saturday and the thirty minutes before as a training session and your players will continue to improve from whatever level they are at.

May 2011

Player Preparation Food for thought: Watch our players in 2011 Player enjoyment, confidence and esteem in football comes from a good skill base. Football is often a child’s first sport in Canberra. If they get a good experience and enjoy it they may well stay active in sport, not just football, in years to come. In 2011 more of our players are possibly better prepared for the season than ever before. Majura Summer football saw 85 players aged 5-13 take to the ovals, followed by many more playing Futsal, and others taking part in Capital Football HPP and Coerver Coaching Academy programs. Over 50 players joined the Majura FC/Coerver pre-season program, and teams in U10, 12, 13 and 15 have all been training and/or taking part in the Lightning tournament. With changes to Pee Wees 5/6 focusing on a little more individual ballwork, and U7 midweek training/playing in 2011 we can expect to see a rise in the development and confidence of our younger players.

Team Preparation Goals Galore: In Girls pre-season match. U13s Girls Div 1 Coach Felipe Flores was happy with the run. He had to nip off to play ACT Men’s Premier League (for Cooma) in the afternoon but he still had time to ref a little, put the nets up and coach his team! For the record the U13 won 6-4 with the front row in the photo revealing all the goalscorers on the day and maybe one or two more snuck in! Both teams have been training twice a week for some time - U12s as a whole squad, 30 girls, since February - including the trials. And both teams have played a number of friendlies and the Lightning tournament.

Follow @majuraresults and why not tweet your score and scorers this season.

By the time the season starts both teams will have played around eight games - that’s half a season of a sixteen week Capital Football season - so teams and players should be wellprepared come Saturday.

President’s Welcome

Dress Code Majura, it’s the rule. Wearing the official club colours while playing for Majura FC is a Junior League rule. Previously we have had some players (all ages) wearing black/dark blue shorts or different coloured socks and skins. The referees can pull them up on anything that is not official club colours and not let them play if they wish.

1. Majura team colours are Team Shirt, Blue Shorts and White Socks. 2. Jewellery. No jewellery is allowed except for close/soft fitting hair clips. We suggest girls/boys don’t get ears pierced during the season as sleepers/studs will be required to be taken out.

Referee fees – U7 U8 & U9s 50% of the fee is to be paid by each team, in U7s U8s & U9s. The club suggests you collect it from parents at the start of the season for the full season.

Photography: Permission Please Before taking photos Majura FC suggests permission is gained from parents/carers for every child.

Team Strips: Unless permission has been given by the Equipment Officer, all uniforms/strips must be kept together. Suggest drawing up a roster within your team to take turns to wash it.

Match Day Information Game times, draws and fixtures: All draws are on the website. Please recheck the draws very carefully. There continue to be significant changes and if you do not check carefully, you may end up missing a match. All games can be found here http://www.sportingpulse.com/assoc_page.cgi?c=1-8284-0-0-0&a=COMPS Please note, teams in 10 Girls, 12 Open and 15/2 Girls have friendly games in place of byes. See the full list here http://www.capitalfootball.com.au/site/comp_junior.php

Majura Fair Play: Majura has always encouraged a love of the game and a fair go for all it’s players. All players have paid the same fee - so they should all get fair game time. In most cases every player should be allowed and encouraged to play in every position - ie goals, defender, midfield and forward. No matter what the result. There maybe some differences as players get older around 13+ but until then, your star striker in U10 may turn out something quite different in an older team. Socceroo Captain Lucas Neill started life as winger! Didn’t help him much in the World Cup as the Germans flew past him did it! So please give that 9 year old defender a go up front - she may well turn into a strong skillful attacking forward as a 15 year old. But she won’t if she never gets a chance! And of course your best striker will make a great defender - once they’ve learnt!

Your Referee is always right Majura FC has a strong behavioural code for all our members. When Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney swears on the field, he gets banned from playing. So no swearing at the Ref, or any official. You can’t play the game without a Ref can you? And would you come back if you got abused every week, or even once!

Follow @majuraresults and why not tweet your score and scorers this season.

Coach/Parent rage is a huge problem at junior sport in Canberra, in Australia. Let’s all take responsibility for our players, our coaches and our parents. We ask all Majura members to support our Refs. Remember it’s only a game and it’s supposed to be fun for everyone.
