Jimmy Hayes probably wouldn’t have wanted anyone to make a fuss but the Canberra football community paid tribute to a pioneer of the game in the ACT. Hayes died recently in hospital, aged 80. He was a player and coach in some of the very first ACT clubs but his biggest role came in setting up junior clubs in the ACT. Hayes helped form the Majura Soccer Club where the club house in Dickson is now named the Jimmy Hayes pavilion. Yesterday club president Rhonda Parkin said Hayes was just always there to help out. “He always used to say, ‘I don’t want anyone making a fuss’, all he did wasn’t for his benefit, he was just there for the love of the children and the game,” she said. “He was just always around to help out.” Hayes’s foremost love was helping juniors with the game. Hayes set up the first junior team in Canberra. Terry Hayes said his father spread football’s message widely.
Jim Hayes “He wanted to see junior football improve, he liked seeing kids enjoying the game.”

“He was a janitor at Hughes primary and he just started bringing a ball for the kids to play with at lunch and those numbers just grew and grew and then they started entering teams in the local competitions,” Terry Hayes said. “He wanted to see junior football improve, he liked seeing kids enjoying the game.” Chris Conti – who managed the ACTAS program while Hayes was director of coaching – said Hayes inspired many young players to a life-time involvement in football. “He was a terrific man and a real inspiration,” Conti said. He is survived by sons Alan, Pat, Danny and Terry and 10 grandchildren as well as six great grand children.

Anyway I am emailing you because I was very impressed with a team on Saturday. The Koalas U10 Open. What fantastic team spirit, with fantastic encouragement and guidance from their Coach and Parents on the sideline. Yes, they did lose their game: but they played with enthusiasm and good sportsmanship for the whole game.

Meet the Coach: Margaret (4 games to date.) Margaret is Coach of Under 10 girls team, The Tsunamis. “I’ve never coached before but I saw we needed a Coach and I thought why not? “I’d played in games with kids and adults before so had a bit of an idea of the rules and the point of the game. My mate Eamonn was a great help showing me a few drills to get started. “I then went along to the Coerver Coaching Clinic offered at Majura recently. I was the only woman there, which I was surprised at. I didn’t realize coaching was so boysey (where are you gals?). Anyway the clinic was fantastic, and I came away inspired.

“Without wanting to sound like an ad, I learnt a lot of great drills and learnt that the most important thing for kids is confidence with ball skills.
Coerver Coaching?
“So that’s a big part of what the girls and I work on at training. I try to instill in the girls that the game is about having fun and giving it a go.
FYI: A number of Majura 6-12 year olds have signed up for the July school hols coaching clinic.
“They all get so excited when they score a goal so I really try to emphasise how great that is, and take the focus off winning. “I’ve had a vote of confidence from my daughter with the training drills so I must be going okay. “I’d encourage anyone to get involved. The skills you bring from Netball, Rugby or other sports are very similar and the kids just need lots of practice and encouragement. And a coaching clinic or two and you’re on your way.”

The season has had a slow start for the U13G Div 1 team with the full-size pitch taxing the players' power and stamina and goals proving elusive. Eleanor Smith and Ruth Kravis had some good chances against Girl's Grammar last week and Vic Jamieson was often able to make headway down the left wing. The potential is certainly there for some good results and the hard work in training sessions with Coach BJ Cook will pay off in time. The team is starting to move more into the forward third and pressure opposition defences. Futsal news: Boomerang FC are entered in the NSW Futsal Premier League. A Canberra team for boys/girls Under 12 thru Seniors.
