Welcome to Season 2012. The season is flying past. We’ve just five weeks to go. We hope everyone is continuing to enjoy their football. We’d encourage everyone to get to training, be on time at their game and get the most from their Belwest season. It was great to see all the Belwest teams in this years Kanga Cup. A special mention to Max Blakers and of course we’d like to thank all the parents who helped our young players at the Kanga Cup.

During the school holidays the U11Girls - Belwest Foxes participated in the Kanga Cup. Sunday - Sunday afternoon’s Opening ceremony had the girls leading Belwest into the AIS Arena proudly displaying the Belwest banner. Jason had a team bonding night with most of the team staying at his house in preparation for Monday’s first game. Monday - Our first game was played against Woden Valley United at Mawson. The girls played a wonderful game although were defeated 4 -0 with Hollie Rowan sustaining a wrist injury that would see her sit out the rest of the tournament. Tuesday - Our first international game was played against Three Kings New Zealand at UC on Tuesday morning. After a great game, New Zealand scored 11 to Belwest 1. Belwest Foxes played Weston Creek Warriors after lunch. Weston Creek 1 – Belwest 0. Weston Creek scored with less than 10 seconds to go but it was a super shot. Briony Fleming in goals was spectacular. The close marking and attention on the ball which had been missing in the previous games started to show glimpses of a return. Anita bravely volunteered her house for dinner and another sleep over. The team enjoyed a trip to Hoyts Belconnen to watch Brave. Wednesday – The girls were back at UC playing Belnorth White Strikers defeating them 2 – 1. Down to 10 players the girls step it up a level showing form that had been missing in earlier matches. Thursday – With the rain pouring the girls took the field against Belnorth White Devils. Briony who was in goal for the first half scored 2 goals in the second half and was unlucky not to get a hat trick or more. The defenders finally got a run up front with the forwards defending, a little bit of fun for the last game. Belwest defeated Belnorth 2 -1. The girls had a wonderful week playing soccer, placing fifth on the competition ladder. (Continued on next page)

They and the coach learnt a lot about playing at the higher level and you can expect a much improved campaign in Tasmania in September and next year’s Kanga Cup.
Welcome

And thank you to the team managers who worked hard to bring this all together.
Report - Belwest U16 Div 2 The U16 Div 2’s start to the 2012 season was not a promising one. For four long weeks they languished on or near the bottom of the ladder without a win. A final score of 3-2 in the opposing team’s favour looked to become the norm. Where, oh where, was that elusive win? It wasn’t for lack of trying or skill – sometimes, it was just plain bad luck. Did the BYE help? Perhaps a BYE helped because the following round saw Belwest hold the unbeaten ladder leader scoreless with a 2-nil win. Since then, the team has not looked back, with a further five straight wins on the board to take them into fifth position on the ladder after 11 rounds. Clearly we need more sprints! Well done to the team and Coach Lee. You are reaping the rewards from the hard yards at training! Right, everyone on the line... a slow jog... now sprint! Lea - Manager

The History of Futsal in Australia. Many young players play Futsal during the summer months. The game is well established in Australia and the Futsalroos will head to the World Cup in Thailand in November. The story behind the pleasure and pain of Australian Futsal is outlined in this special three-part report by Dan de Nardi The ‘Rise and Fall and Rise Again’ tale of Futsal in Australia is perhaps just as riveting as the game itself. It seems a lifetime ago that Australia was on top of the indoor football world as a top-10 nation playing a game started and dominated by Latin-American and European countries for three straight decades. Australia hosted and finished sixth at the 1988 world championships (four years after forming a team) and even had its national league shown on free-to-air television in a million dollar deal with building products giant James Hardie. It was an incredible position to be in considering the country’s obsession with rugby league, union, AFL and cricket… but the fast train of Futsal glory ran out of track in the early 1990s and the Australian game started a slow, slippery slide down its golden global hill. Futsal has always enjoyed healthy participation – it’s quick, inclusive, fun, entertaining, non-discriminative (physically and culturally), passionate, indoors, etc – but a distinct lack of administrative structure and financial backing after its 1980s boom left Australia failing to stabilise its early successes, both on and off the court. Just as Australia’s Futsal boat hung precariously over a flat-world’s edge, an individual and organisational commitment to right the rudder and forge a new course has provided the sport with much-needed revitalisation. Over the past five years in particular, Futsal associations and clubs across Australia have implemented structures for technical, team and administrative development, and extended elite pathways to players, coaches and officials. The NSW Premier League and Super League and Melbourne Futsal League are established top-level competitions, and the highly-competitive national Hummel F-League is halfway through its second season. There’s even talk of steering the F-League back onto TV screens. And look no further than the Futsalroos for a great gauge of Australia’s improvements after they finished fourth at the recent Asian championships to qualify for November’s World Cup carnival in Thailand. The first part of the report entitled....From humble beginnings.....can be found here.
