How Secure is Your Food? foodse·cu·ri·ty:thestateofhaving reliableaccesstoasufficient quantityofaffordable, nutritious food.
Foodsecurityhasdeclineddramaticallyinmany developingcountries.Themajorityofusrelyonour grocerystorestoprovideuswithhealthy,affordable food. Wetendtoforgethowfragilethefoodsystemactually is.Wearedependentonasystemthatisvulnerableto naturaldisasters,weatherandroadconditionsacross theglobe. Ifyourtownwassuddenlycutofffromtheoutside worldfor3days,wouldyourfamilyhaveenoughfood tosurvive? Howaboutaweek?Onemonth? Theimportanceofsupportinglocalfarmers,learning togrowyourownfoodwithoutchemicalfertilizers andhavingtheskillstopreservethatfoodisvital.Visit pRRRdy.comtoseehowtogardennaturallyandlearn howtogrowsomeofyourownfood.
Witheach summerdrierandhotter thanthelast, waterconservationis becomingthenormthroughoutthe PRRD. Inthelast3years,Dawson Creekhashadtoresorttolevel4 waterconservationmeasuresaswellas increasingthepriceofwater. Whilewateringfoodgardensis stillpermitted, flowersandgrass areprohibitedfromwateringwhile underrestrictions.Havingseveralrain barrelsateachdownspoutwillensure harvestedrainwaterisavailablefor yourgardenneedsthroughoutthe summermonths.

Get Growing!
Asidefromthesheerjoyofwatching somethinggrow,therearemany reasonstoplantyourowngardenthis year:
• Itjusttastesbetter!There’snocomparisonbetween
• •
• • •
•
bitingintoafreshlypickedcarrotandonethathas beentransported1000milestothegrocerystore. Youhavethecontroloverwhatgoesintooronto yourplants(think:nopesticides!). Reducestress.There’ssomethingprimalabout digginginthedirtthatiscalmingtothesoul.There arenodistractionslikelaptops,computerortelevision tooverloadyourbrainwithendlessinformation. Allthatdigging,turningandplantingaregreatforms oflow-impact,strengtheningexercise. Loweryourcarbonfootprint–foodgrownathome reducesthenumberoftripstothegrocerystore. Bypreservingyourownhome-growngoods, youensurefoodsecurityforyouandyourfamily throughouttheyear. Being surroundedbygreenspacelowersblood pressureandimprovesmood.
Nospaceforagarden?TryCommunity Gardening.Mostmunicipalitiesin thePRRDhavecommunitygardens. • Affordable,accessiblespace: Mostcommunitygardenplotsare rentedoutforaveryreasonable price- generallyjustenoughto coverthecostoflandtaxesand utilities. • Newrelationships:Community gardensareagreatplacetomeet like-mindedpeople. • ExtraKnowledge:Learn gardeningtipsfromothersand sharesuccessstories. • Support:Helpingotherswith taskssuchasrototillingand plantingwillfosterasenseof partnershipandgoodwill. • Additionalfreshproduce:You havetoomanycarrotsand yourfellowgardenershave anoverabundanceofbeets. Solution: makeatradeorsimply justshareyourbounty!

Is Your Water on Drugs?
Sincethelate1990’s,scientistshavebeenconcernedaboutthe differentmedicationsshowingupinmunicipalsewersystems. Assewagewasteistreatedthenreturnedbacktonaturalwaterways,itmakessensethatwe’realso seeinglowlevelsofthesedrugsinourdrinkingwater.Studiesdoneonaquaticlifehavebeenalarming; fishwithBOTHfemaleandmaleanatomyarebelievedtobetheresultofhighconcentrationsofthe hormonesfoundinbirthcontrolpills. Muchofthiscontaminationisunavoidable:it’spassedintoour sewerthroughurineandfeces.Much ofit,however,istherebecausepeopleareunawarethatflushingdrugsisharmfultoourwater supplies. DrugsandmedicationshouldNEVERbeflushedorthrowninthegarbage. Instead,gatherupallunusedorexpired medicationandbringthemtoyourlocal pharmacy,wheretheywillbedisposed properly.
