Upcycle That Pallet Due to the nature of industry in our region, pallets are even less than a dime a dozen. In most places, they are FREE. This is a reusable resource available to everyone and versatile in how it can be upcycled. One of the project examples we have is using a pallet to create a vertical garden. If space is an issue for you, this is a great way to create a beautiful arrangement in a fraction of the space a flowerbed would require.

Summer2013
Waste Reduction Newsletter
Volume 17, Double Issue
pRRRdy Please... On behalf of the Peace River Regional District (PRRD), the Northern Environmental Action Team (NEAT) has launched the “pRRRdy Please…” residential recycling survey. This short survey is open between July 12th and August 18th. The survey is designed to gather information on recycling participation in the region from both rural and urban residents. This will provide the regional district with data to develop their waste reduction strategy for the future. The collection of this information is essential to thoroughly understand the contributing factors to landfill capacity and the contents that are therein. Much of the “waste” delivered to the landfill is not waste at all. The contents are resources that have a monetary value. 30-40% of everything that goes to the landfill is recyclable. Another 30-40% is organic waste that can be composted. By diverting these materials from the landfill, they may be reused and remade into new valuable products. Currently, the PRRD’s diversion rate, as a whole, is low. In 2012, each resident contributed approximately 558kg to the regional landfills. As the 3 R’s, reduce, reuse, recycle, indicate, there are several options to reduce waste. Residents are encouraged to divert their waste in a quick and easy manner so that the garbage bin is the last option.
This newsletter contains information to assist you in diverting these resources before they reach our regional landfills. The PRRD and the Stewards of British Columbia provide services locally to recover materials, big and small. For a list of these stewards and the materials they accept, please refer to page 3 of this publication. In addition to the information provided in this newsletter, there are additional ways of finding where to recycle your items. Prrrdy.com provides a database called “Where Can I Recycle.” You are able to select your item and get a list of locations it can be taken to. Additionally, a green line is available to you for all of your waste reduction questions. Call 1-888-689-6328, and we will respond to your request as quickly as possible. Residents may complete the survey from Friday July 12th through Sunday August 18th 2013. Upon completion, they may enter to win 1 of 4 $50 gift certificates to a grocery or hardware store of their choice. To fill out the survey and enter to win, go to www.neat.ca or www.prrrdy.com and click on the “pRRRdy Please…” link or scan the QR code. Thank you for your participation.

News Near You Fort St. John Ray Chapple Just Keeps on Shredding We would like to introduce you to Ray Chapple, one of NEAT’s heroes in Fort St. John. While we think about recycling a few minutes a day when we are opening our mail, or putting a pop can in the recycling bin, Ray spend 3 days a week trying to make the world a cleaner place. Ray may be in his 80’s, but he is making a difference. Ray attends the Senior’s Day program at Peace Villa in Fort St. John. While there, he shreds. I don’t just mean he shreds a little bit. He shreds bags and bags of paper for recycling. At last count, he had shredded well over 300 bags of paper.

We do ask that all materials are rinsed or washed prior to recycling. For a detailed list of what is recyclable at these locations, go to prrrdy.com or call NEAT at 888-689-6328.
We are working with our rural residents to encourage more recycling. Agricultural plastics have typically been buried or burned. These are not the best options for disposal. The Peace Region is now able to recycle clean bale wrap & bags at the Eco-Depot in Fort St. John, D.C. Recycling in Dawson Creek, and now Prespatpou and Tomslake transfer stations. It is as easy as shaking it out, bundling it up, & bringing it in. Watch prrrdy.com for future pilot projects in your area for Agricultural Plastics. If you have items that you would like to know how to recycle, go to prrrdy.com or call NEAT at 1-888-689-6328.

The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute of Canada (OPEIC) now has drop off locations in the Peace Region. If you have gardening equipment, snow blowers, lawn mowers, chainsaws, mulchers, etc, they are no longer destined for the landfill at end of life. There are now 2 drop off locations in our area. Drop off locations: Richmond Steel, Fort St. John

Tip: If your Power Equipment still works, try to sell it or give it away on Peace Country Classifieds, or donate to a thrift store before recycling.
Chetwynd Recycling has Gone To The Dogs Despite the fact that recycling is a common practice, there has been a noticeable gap in the petroleum business. Gas stations have one of the biggest opportunities to divert recyclables, specifically deposit items such as pop cans and water bottles, yet most of the companies in our area do not have recycle bins available for their customers. So it was a welcome change when NEAT approached the Dawson Creek Co-op and asked them to supply the Chetwynd Cardlock with on-site recycle bins. A few weeks later, shiny metal blue bins were dropped off at the Cardlock. Not only will these cans and bottles be kept out of the landfill, but some very important creatures will also benefit. The On Our Way Home (OOWH) animal rescue group has gladly agreed to come and collect the recyclables once a week and in turn, all proceeds go toward the non-profit group, whose aim is to rescue and re-home animals that otherwise have no hope. OOWH, president Alyssa Bond said, "On Our Way Home is excited to work with NEAT by helping reduce, reuse, recycle AND help the animals all at the same time. As the rescue grows, and is able to take in more animals, the added funding is essential to have. Taking in bottles is a very small thing to do, but the funds add up so quickly. We appreciate every donation we receive, and having a steady donation such as the bottles from the CO-OP will definitely help us in achieving our goals".

Styrofoam Recycling in Fort St. John Eco-Depot in Fort St. John has invested in a machine that will process Styrofoam (polystyrene). They are able to compress the polystyrene into a beam, making it more transportable to recycling facilities.
NEAT Eco-Advisor, Jen Slater, has approached the other gas stations in Chetwynd with a similar idea. With the proven track record of OOWH, this may create a model that NEAT can share with other locations throughout the Peace Region. If this is something that your business or group is interested in, give NEAT a call at 888-689-6328 or send an email to info@neat.ca.
