01_URBAN HOUSING Residential complex is initially shaped as a hybrid that opens up in the middle of the structure, creating a private garden for its residents, placing the public contents towards the streets. With the significant footprint of the building the space was left for additional functions. Kindergarten is positioned on the south side, overlooking the greenery and the canal, while on the most publicly accessible frontages a hotel with bars and restaurants on the ground levels. This distribution provides public access from the outside and private from internal semi-public garden. Residential blocks expand above the main volume of the structure, with the tower that acts as a new landmark over wide and very flat surroundings, thus creating a more attractive urban image of the neighborhood. To rationalize the use of material and to reduce the environmental impact, a precast system is adopted which uses the recycled concrete to create modular structural and facade elements which create an architectural identity and the language of the envelope of this hybrid structure.

The challenging location for the proposal of a new residential complex borders two significant transport infrastructures: 1)Milano Ring on the west, which is one of the busiest vehicular streets in the urban area of the city, and 2) Railway on the south that blocks direct access to the Navigli water canal. The project starts with an urban strategy to overcome these barriers in space, connecting the building site with the riverfront which tends to become a new Linear Park along the canal. Before implementation of this visionary urban plan the idea is to enrich the gap between the building and canal with greenery and contents that would increase the activity and provide comfort and safety for residents and public users. The greenery serves not only as a natural protective “wall” for the rail tracks but it also revitalizes the riverfront, provides shade, improves the microclimate of the site and decreases the level of noise coming from both the railway and Milano Ring. This transformed public space becomes a starting point of implementation of Navigli Linear Park.

EXISTING LIBRARY PRIMARY SCHOOL KINDERGARTEN SPORTS’ HALL LINK TO THE PARK

DAY CARE CENTER NEW TOWN HALL

02_HYBRID SCHOOL WITH MEDICAL FACILITIES and transforming the current layout of this newly formed center of Nembro. The proposed urban intervention redefines the existing pedestrian link with the park, relocating it in the central axis of the hybrid which would be enriched by the healthcare facility. This transforms the conventional exclusive character of the site into a space of interaction between different groups, where older generations could visually interact with the children from their neighborhood and vice versa. The intention to bring community together implies the redefinition of architectural layout in the topography, where spaces can be accessed and occupied by different users in different periods of the day Therefor the concept of mix-used spaces provides different activities for all citizens of Nembro. Structural integration with the topography allows functional connection between the elementary school and existing library, but also provides additional external space for readers, increasing the all-inclusive character of the space while reshaping and reactivating the center of community.

Recent urban transformation of Nembro gave this small town in Val Seriana a new urban identity. Town Hall building and Auditorium, as two significant urban landmarks, were connected with a new public square, now dominated by pedestrians. Only minutes away a new Cultural center with Library also opened for public and attracted more pedestrians from different parts of the city, but in the middle of these facilities three of the most frequently used functions were left ignored in this process of urban regeneration: Sports’ hall, Elementary school and Kindergarten. Space which is daily occupied by children is isolated from interactions with public spaces in the context. Topography allows the overlook of the most significant green area in the city, but existing connection behind the town hall building is inconvenient for the children who look directly into the park. The goal of this project is to redefine and improve the existing relationship between this site and its’ surroundings, by enriching the existing program

Starting with Porta Romana railyard in the South-East Milan the strategy introduces the sustainable and environmentally friendly methods of urban revitalization such as: • Pedestrian / Cycling city • Urban hybridity Diverse services and accessible green public spaces for different groups, redefining neighborhood identity, with new activities and interactions in the natural environment • Green roofing and urban farming Rationalizing the use of urban land for self-sufficient and sustainable productive communities • Use of rainwater Advocates the idea of urban farming and helps in regeneration of biodiversity • Expanding network Integrating other brownfield areas, with public infrastructure, creating connected systems of green-blue wedges on metropolitan scale.

Analysis of the urban structure of Milan shows that a significant number of parks, agricultural land and water bodies are present in the outskirts of the city, while inside the dense inner parts the disbalance between the built structure and nature is highly present. Moreover, there is a prominent number of declined industrial sites, which not only produce the ecological adversities but also create extensive voids or disconnections within the urban fabric. ThisContinuity is a system of sustainable, accessible and green planning strategies aiming to activate and reconnect the abandoned industrial sites in a network of self-sufficient, revitalized and healthy urban hubs. Implementation of natural elements into these declined spaces contributes to ecosystem’s regeneration and redefines the identity of urban landscape, but also provides the framework for sustainable development, by promoting the active use of public space and its services. The strategy is based on urban recovery of brownfield areas, as places of potential biodi-

APPLICATION OF TRADITIONAL ACHITECTURAL PRINCIPLES IN A CONTEMPORARY CONTEXT

05_EMBASSY OF SERBIA

The research directs design and methods of contemporary interpretation of architectural heritage elements and principles of construction.

The research enters into the contemporary relationship between tradition and architecture by analyzing the application of traditional principles throughout history. In that process, different methods of their use are interpreted, such as transformation and imitation. Aspects of design, function, materialization and ambience, were also considered. The introductory part is conducted by investigation of architectural potentials of Serbian and Western Balkan heritage. The focus is on traditional houses throughout the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

The Complex includes Embassy and Consulate facilities with a plateau for access and events, three housing units for employees, the Ambassador’s residence and additional recreational and relaxing facilities, mainly for the residents of the complex. The challenge is to harmonize comfort and privacy in the living space with representative and publicly acessible contents. Referring to Serbian national architecture, contemporary interpretations of traditional architectural forms implies use of characteristic motifs of previously analyzed Serbian houses. Elements such as porches or gabled roofs, but also materials such as wood in the facade, fireplace in interior and so on, bring balance to the confronted functional units, with a bold architectural and urban structure, and as such they promote national and cultural identity of the Serbian people in a “Land Down Under”.

A study of the vernacular elements of these houses was the basis for second part of the thesis - Design of the Serbian Embassy in Canberra. This project was part of an International Competition for which the breaf required a thorough consideration of Serbian vernacular architecture, calling for contemporary interpretation of architectural heritage to better represent the national and cultural identity of Serbia.

06_PRIMARY SCHOOL INTERIOR REDESIGN In addition to that, this element stores all of the teaching materials, appliances, accessories and other tools. In the corridor it provides a place for hanging the clothes, storing the equipment, toys and other belongings. The color of the classroom floor matches the color of the cubic forms which emphasize the openings inside the partition walls. One indicates the entrance point, while the other acts as a transparent border between the corridor and the classroom, allowing visual interaction, while increasing the natural luminosity and providing space for sitting on both sides. In the corridor this becomes a waiting area, or the place to change shoes before or after play or recreation in the gymnasium. Instead of being used purely as storage units and two-dimensional spatial partitions, the openings inside the walls between classroom and corridor become places of visual interaction, benches to rest and to wait for someone, a portal between different ambiences, treated with color which indicates the spatial connections and creates a new character and identity of interior space.

Among all functional and distribution issues inside the school the lack of ambience in all internal spaces stands out as the biggest challenge in redesigning approach. Simply by introducing the color inside different areas of the school the visual impact changes and the spaces start to develop a character. Public areas become distinguishable from non-public ones, and users can navigate and identify with space. However, in a pursuit for a greater flexibility, but at the same time a proper interior organization derives an element which unites the functionality with a new identity of the school’s interior. A wooden, multi-functional shelf on the line between public and private internal spaces creates a different relationship between areas for learning and moving in space. This shelf reacts to the existing openings inside the walls between the classrooms and corridors, and “dances” around these voids to create a unique spatial element which serves as a buffer between public and private space.

This resulted with a pathway for primary users that would enable a quick descent from city center to the greenery of the river banks. The pathway also provides a connection with the parts of the city across the river, independent from the traffic lanes of the bridge, as well as the panoramic view of the greenery and urban structures along the pedestrian/cyclist path. This encounter with such unique environment is supported with benches along the way, so that users have an opportunity not only to cross the river but also to stay and enjoy its mesmerizing beauties, city skyline or vivid architecture of the the city. Additional content on the left riverbank is integrated into steep terrain and revives the new riverfront with amenities such as beach, bar, cafeteria, sporting capacity, museum, playground, etc. This creates an attractive environment beneath the bridge, where citizens of all age can experience the escape from everyday urbanity into eye-pleasing oasis, and tourists can enjoy these amenities and reveal a true meaning of city’s epithet - “the green beauty”.

The way a coastline makes connections with the most important areas in the city determines the degree of connection between the city and the river. The most important city streets, squares and parks in Banja Luka were developed on a distance from the river Vrbas. From the main town square, the view partially opens towards the “Kastel” fortress, and indirectly, through the market square, to the river. Due to the nature of steep riverbanks and the disposition of urban structures, the users experience the river only when they descend from the city center to one of the bridges. The new bridge is supposed to connect two of the busiest transits in the city of Banja Luka, and to create a link between the main pedestrian area and the river banks. By emphasizing the importance of pedestrian accessibility in such a large scale spatial intervention, the authors decided to separate the pedestrians and cyclists from the noises, jams and pollution of everyday traffic.

Architectural and Urban Design Competition for the War Victims Memorial Square Proposal -third prizeCompetition year Project loaction

10_WAR MEMORIAL SQUARE which is also complimented by the equally rustic and long-lasting stone walls of Trebinje houses, monasteries, bridges and fortresses.

Many fighters and innocent civilians of the tumultuous 20th century gave their lives by defending this old Herzegovinian city. Their courage and sacrifice will remain forever in the memory of the citizens of Trebinje, marked by a monument on the bank of the river Trebišnjica.

The experience of these vertical monuments is the key narrative of the architecture. Pedestrians can access the Memorial square from the old bridge that allows the descent either by stairs or by the slope that gently leans towards the river. Placed upright on the riverbed, the walls lead to the river, unobtrusively opening the view to the old town, which lies on the opposite bank. Nevertheless, their presence is very conspicuous, their accentuated verticality on the one hand evokes respect while on the other hand provides security, protection and peace in those who reside in this memorial space. The spirit of the place is enriched by the breath of life in the form of new trees that shade the space and provide comfort, especially during very hot summer days, together with an artificial water mirror, which sinks under the plateau, as a tribute to Trebišnjica, Europe’s longest subterranean river.

The inspiration for the proposal comes from the renowned fighting spirit of Herzegovinian warriors and people who fearlessly waited for the occupiers, ready to sacrifice their life to defend the motherland. This bravery is reflected in the architecture of the Memorial with a number of upright, vertical panels, each dedicated to the individual war year of the city in the previous century. As brave fighters, they are boldly standing ready to defend their land, as an eternal watch over the river in which their bravery reflects. Corten steel panels symbolize the longevity of their spirit, saved from the oblivion of time, all rustic and stubborn. The color of these panels fits into the urban landscape dominated by red roofs of Herzegovinian clay,

11_URBAN TRANSFORMATION OF PUBLIC SPACES http://dans.org.rs/nova-mesta-rezultati/

Location 01_Residential parking in Detelinara

Location 02_Zmaj Jova’s Square

Shared parking lot between two residential blocks was dominated by cars, while the green spaces integrated within the parking area lacked trees and urban furniture that would trigger pedestrian activities in space. The goal of the competition is to create a magnet for people to use these abandoned green islands.

Small urban pocket in community center of Sremska Kamenica, although refined with trees and commercial contents, was lacking infrastructural features that would prevent formation of a parking lot in the heart of the pedestrian zone, and urban furniture that would define a proper bus stop, playground, or a public garden.

The proposal starts with an idea to connect these islands into a single green space, emphasizing the pedestrians and not vehicles. First layer of intervention is a playful wooden structure that travels from one sidewalk to the other, connecting both streets of the neighborhood with a pedestrian shortcut. This became a space where children could run and play, and neighbors could gather, sit, and relax. It allows the vehicular traffic below, but provides safety for the users. Second layer - TREES, compliment the wooden platform and allow nature to dominate the asphalt of the existing parking lot.

Design intervention proposes an “oversize” linear bench with a canopy, clearly separating the pedestrian zone from the street. It combines places for sitting, gathering, bus stop, polygon for children, street lights and traffic barriers. Plateau is in the level with a sidewalk, which together with appropriate arrangement of structural elements emphasizes the use of pedestrian space as a whole. The space becomes free of cars, allowing local markets to occupy and share the shaded public garden and generates interaction by inviting people to participate in its activities.

NEGLECTED GREEN OASIS

Neda Medić, Đorđe Šebić, Nebojša Jeremić

OPENING TOWARDS THE PARK

ALLOWING NATURE IN THE CENTER

CONNECTIVE PUBLIC CORE

12_HOTEL ZHETYSU

https://aabh.ba/bh-projekti-za-piranesi-nagradu/

1. Semi-Public Garden Descended below the street level to be accessed directly from the internal contents of the hotel, such as a bar or wellness / spa center. Guests can walk outside, take a break, sit on the grass and enjoy the sun during spring, breeze in the shades during summer, or snow in winter.

Observing Almaty from above, the ubiquity of greenery can be noticed, even in the most urban areas of the city. The atrium and semiatrium blocks are followed by alleys along the edges, so that the built structure remains as a border between the private gardens and the green city streets. The greatest quality that can be recognized in the immediate vicinity of the project location lies in the park on the west side, restrained by the street from intertwining with neighboring site, intended for a new Hotel.

2. Public platform A system of bridges and ramps that connects the public areas of the hotel such as restaurant, gymnasium, shops, bars, etc. This structure provides an outdoor space for restaurant or bar gardens, surrounded by the forest of treetops.

Design intention is to extend this green oasis into the core of the site which would become a semi-public garden of all outdoor activities, both for public and private users of the future hotel. The idea is to use the topography of the park to descend the garden below the level of the streets in order to create a different level of accessibility and privacy. In this way the public pedestrian areas are connected with the park, while the guests share the atrium of the hotel. The intervention consists of three main layers:

3. Volumes Three blocks of public and private contents of the hotel, protect the courtyards from traffic noises and pollution, with visual connections to the park. Internal distribution is parallel to the garden, and guests can stay in rooms which are facing the atrium, or active public space and urban landscape in the context of the hotel.

The project included research on urban acupuncture, design of a small urban intervention and its construction (within a student workshop) at a specific location in open public space. Students were faced with the challenge of critical thinking on scales of the contemporary urban environment, as well as with problems of post-transitional contemporary cities, with reflection of innovative models in a proactive approach to urban transformations.

an increasing number of everyday users, so that it slowly gained the epithet of one of the favourite outdoor places in Banja Luka. Besides a place to sit and enjoy the view on the green river banks or an ancient fortress, the structure invites people of all ages to participate in everyday sporting and picnic activities which became even more frequent after its construction. The highlight, however, is a cantilever part that extends from the shore above the water surface. It serves as a dock for kayak vessels, and it gives a unique experience of the river and the historical urban landscape of the city.

Except for being one of the first architectural interventions in open public space by the Vrbas river in Banja Luka, the project got a lot of attention both from professional and general public, and has launched a number of other changes, minor achievements and projects, with the possibility of further improvement. It also animated using and creating new activities that improve the level of awareness about importance and preservation of public space. Although it was built on location that was marginalized, the project made it accessible for

The wooden platform along the Vrbas river has enriched the public space of the city. The structure called ‘Banjalučki mol’ brings a new quality to an otherwise neglected space. The simple form derives from the spatial conditions and forms of the place, leaving a room for appropriation and change by users. The structure has two qualities required for the development of a strong public space – a clear identity and concept of open use.
