Fall 2010: Homecoming Red Out ’70 Team Celebration

Nebraska alumni, fans and friends will have plenty of reasons to Stand Up For Nebraska this fall. The week of Sept. 19 is UNL Homecoming. The Nebraska Alumni Association will debut a new tradition – the homecoming jester competition – during their Sept. 24 Football Friday event, along with the homecoming parade and pep rally (page 3). Alumni can participate in the Red Out Around the World (pages 18-19) and the Huskers first national championship team will be honored during the Texas game (page 17). Next, the highlight of the evening, the homecoming pep rally, features a new tradition – the homecoming jester competition – courtesy of the Nebraska Alumni Association and the Scarlet Guard student group.

Also known as the biggest Husker fan contest, the competition will take place in front of the Wick Alumni Center. With the streets closed down from the parade, we hope that hundreds of you will gather in the grass and on R street to cheer for your favorite student as the jester candidates amuse the crowd with their antics and costumes in what is sure to

NAA Joins Forces with OLLI to Offer a New Member Benefit They say curiosity never retires. And the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is proof of that. OLLI at UNL partners with the College of Education and Human Sciences, and is one of 120 Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes across the United States, promoting lifelong learning for adults 50 years and older. More than 10 years ago, former Microsoft executive Jeff Raikes helped conceive of a program at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln where top students could combine a degree in technology with the strategic thinking taught in business schools.

In the early 1980s he met the etcher and painter Luigi Lucioni, and they became good friends. Embury’s enthusiasm for Lucioni’s work prompted him to write about the artist and his work.

About 15 years ago Embury’s avocation took another turn. He began to collect the correspondence of artists and now has nearly 1,000 letters, including ones written

by Winslow Homer, George Inness, Rembrandt Peale and John Sloan. He plans to donate these to the UNL Embury Library in the future.

Embury’s motivation for moving the collection to the University Archives and Special Collections is because he wants “to share it with the world.”

The fourth consecutive Devaney volleyball sellout is expected to be Saturday, Sept. 11, when Nebraska hosts Big Ten Conference power Illinois at 7 p.m. – 7½ hours after Nebraska and Idaho kick off in football at Memorial Stadium.

Both venues are expected to be packed, and the Devaney will be buzzing.

Nebraska returns six starters from a team that went 26-7 and was ranked fifth in the final 2009 AVCA poll. The Huskers return three All-Americans, including two-time selection Sydney Anderson along with Brooke Delano and Tara Mueller.

Illinois returns five starters from a team that was 26-6 and ranked 10th nationally.

Tickets for the Nebraska-Illinois match went on sale Aug. 3 and range in price from $9 to $15.

The Husker-Illini match is part of the Ameritas Players Challenge, a tournament that also will include Dayton and Western Michigan. The first two days of action will take place in the NU Coliseum with the final day moving to the Devaney.

“We feel the Ameritas Players Challenge is one of the premier tournaments in the country,” Nebraska Coach John Cook said.

Nebraska does not enter the season without momentum. This summer, the Huskers spent 17 days in China – a trip that was designed to bond, unify and equip an experienced team to reach its December dream – the NCAA National Championship in Kansas City.

In China, the Huskers went 5-5 in exhibition matches and recorded two wins over professional teams.

Cook has taken two other Husker teams to China – in 2000 and 2006. Both of those teams ended up winning national championships.

“Agriculture is at the center of many of these issues,” said Liska, assistant professor of biological systems engineering. “Agriculture is so fundamental; it can be a supplier of food and energy, and it can mitigate and be impacted by climate change.”

The new minor comprises four core courses at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln that provide an overview of energy in society, fundamental principles, energy economics and environmental issues related to energy systems. Classes are designed for students in any program degree, with the first classes offered in fall 2008.

Currently about 20 students are enrolled.

Liska said no one knows for certain what the solutions are to the energy dilemma, but Nebraska already has a head start by producing corn ethanol, soybean biodiesel and wind power.

New technologies soon may make it feasible for Nebraska industries to burn agricultural byproducts for heat and electricity, he said, which could reduce the need for petroleum-based imports.

Service to the community is a common theme they share with students when the couple visits campus. Jeff is often on campus two or three times a year to mentor students at the Raikes School.
