Social Media Guidelines • • • • •
As a chapter leader posting in an official capacity remember that you are representing your chapter, the university and the NAA. If you are questioning whether or not you should post something, the answer is probably no. Be respectful, honest and accurate and maintain integrity in what you post. Remember that even deleted posts can be searched, so stay clear of posting second-hand information and rumors. Inappropriate postings that include discriminatory remarks, harassment and threats of violence will not be tolerated.
NAA Social Media Strategy We focus on university news, NAA events and promotions, stories about alumni, engagement/for fun and membership benefits.
We aim to educate and highlight the positive things happening at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Using Social Media to Expand Your Reach •
•
•
Go to where your people are and showcase them • Search your watch site location for photos from game day. • Share photos of people attending your events. Use consistent hashtags: #HuskerAlum, #FutureHuskers, #Huskers, #Nebraska, #LoveNebraska, #UNL, #HuskerPower Be strategic about which platforms you are on • No need to have a fear of missing out if it’s not smart for your group. • Figure out what channels are your members are on and focus there. Work smarter, not harder • The UNL, Huskers and NAA accounts provide tons of content each week. You are welcome to use them. • Tag the NAA account in your posts
NAA Email Strategy •
•

We send about 27 emails each month • General NAA topics • Membership • Program and Event Promotion • College and Department Emails • Chapters
Email and Web Reminders • •
•
Your best resource: Chapter Leader Toolbox: huskeralum.org/leader-toolbox Email Requests and Web Calendar Submissions • Send requests two weeks prior to the email send date. • All chapter and group emails send on the first and second Thursday of each month. These dates are dedicated to chapter emails. • First fill out the form on our website. Then we will request the recipient list and build and test the email. • We will proof the message for grammar and style and will use editorial expertise to ensure the information and images are used effectively. Watch site and Chapter Information Updates • Use this form to update information so we can point people to your watch sites.
• Nebraska Magazine Sent to 20,000 homes of paid alumni members, circulation expands to all UNL alums (approx. 190,000) with the fall edition. • 13-Month Calendar Sent to alumni members in conjunction with the year-end magazine.
What Makes a Good Story Newsy … unusual … has good visuals. We look for general and human-interest stories. We’d prefer to seek out an interesting story and find the alumni at the heart of it rather than simply highlight an alumnus with an interesting story.
What Isn’t a Good Story Avoid stories that aim to promote the commercial achievements of a particular alumnus — we are not their marketing vehicle. We aim to tell the ongoing story of UNL, through its most compelling characters. We profile those who are at the very top of their field or are disruptive and innovative in a big way.
Find the Fun
Bay Area Huskers with their Bugsy Gnome vs. Idaho Huskers with Spuds McHusker
Find the Fun • Cornhusker Critters contest on social media each month, winners print in the next magazine. • Babies in Husker gear will appear in the magazine.
Photo Submissions Must haves: In focus, complete caption information Nice to have: People interacting, smiling, having a good time. Give the photo a sense of place. Do: remove nametags, keep groups small (ideally no more than five people in a shot) Don’t submit: grip and grins, microphones blocking faces, folks standing at a podium. .
