Chapter Leader Updates July 2011 - January 2010
July 2011 Chapter Leader Update Welcome - Brooke Banner rotation in Memorial Stadium - Bob 1. Reminder of banner sizes • Regulations given to us from Athletics are 4x6 • If you need a banner, the NAA can help with the design and production • After the season, if you need your banner for an event of your own, we can send it to you, otherwise, we will keep it here at the alumni association • Please send us your banner by August 1 if you have it so that we can take it to athletics for the season 2. Rotation Process • We cannot guarantee your banner will be hung when we designate a move. Athletics moves our banners for us, and an instance may come up when your banner is not up as planned. • Don Nelson posed the question of having banners also hung in south stadium – the NAA will check on this with athletics. • Note: the last game of the year is senior day and many families of players make banners for the athletes and all chapter banners may not be hung
• If you aren’t sure if you have a banner, email Brooke Heck • Bob will work on a rotation schedule and send out prior to the season Affiliate groups invited to VLC, RSVP reminder Brooke 1. Support your coach and your alumni association by voting Bo Pelini for the 2010 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year! The winning coach receives $50,000 to donate to the charity or charities of his choice, as well as a $20,000 grant to his school’s alumni association. Remember to vote everyday! Scholarship Link You can now donate to any chapter scholarship fund online! This is an easy way to contribute to your chapter’s fund and can be found on the alumni association chapter page under Chapter Leader Resources. Give today. Google Calendar Remember that the Nebraska Alumni Association has a Google calendar on the website where we will be happy to add the fun and exciting chapter events happening in your area. Submit calendar items to Sarah Haskell. Sponsorship Reminder Regarding Tobacco, Alcohol and Gaming products The association screens potential partners, vendors and sponsors throughout the year in order to protect against Conflicts of Interest, while maximizing value and helping manage the volume of solicitations alumni and friends receive. This process also protects the relationships with existing, primary university sponsors (preventing
“Coke” advertisements competing with the existing university “Pepsi” sponsorship, for example). In addition, sponsors and promotions that include tobacco products, alcoholic beverages and gambling are not permitted. Seeking Award Nominees There is still time to nominate an outstanding alumnus or student for one of the alumni association’s annual awards. This is a great opportunity to recognize individuals who have distinguished themselves as leaders in their chosen life’s work and/or through volunteer endeavors - including the good work they are doing in your chapter! There are also student awards, accompanied by scholarship stipends, for UNL students who are up and coming leaders. Please consider placing a nomination by the Nov. 1 deadline. Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest At this year’s Volunteer Leader Conference, we distributed a couple of provisional forms that we would like all chapter presidents to read and sign. If you were not in attendance at the VLC, we will be mailing these forms to you. Please fill them out and return them to the Nebraska Alumni Association. Postcard and E-mail guidelines reminder The Nebraska Alumni Association would be happy to help promote your Founder’s Day, summer picnic, watch sites or other activities you are
planning. If you would like the association to send out an announcement or invitation by post or e-mail, please submit your request with two weeks notification. In order to process your request, we have several pairs of eyes working on the layout and copy for the message as well as pulling together a list of recipients in the area requested. Remember, we provide two complimentary postcard mailings per year.

Watch Sites Please check huskeralum.org to make sure we have the information listed correctly for your watch sites. If something needs to be changed, please
email Sarah Haskell at shaskell@huskeralum.org. Also, please be sure to send Sarah an e-mail with your attendance numbers so we can share with others what a great job you are doing! Pay-Per-View We heard from several of you about the satellite issues during the NE vs. Idaho game last Saturday. It was a nationwide problem. We apologize for any inconvenience this must have caused you at your watchsites. But to take a cue from the North County San Diego Huskers, who made the most of the situation and handled it with class: “We ended up getting a lap top, getting the Huskers.com radio feed and piping it in to the speaker system. Throughout the whole episode we heard what was happening nationwide – while we stayed on top of the game action with technology on our phones.” We have passed along your comments to the Athletic Department, who handles these types of issues. You are also free to express concerns with your local cable provider.
August 2010 Chapter Leader Update Many Higher Education Nonprofit Organizations Could Lose Tax-Exempt Status Hundreds of nonprofit organizations affiliated with higher education, including local chapters of college alumni associations, have failed to file tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service and may lose their tax-exempt status, says a report (http://www.urban.org/url.cfm?ID=412135) released by the Urban Institute’s National Center for Charitable Statistics. Under a change in tax law designed to help the IRS keep track of all nonprofit organizations, small organizations that have an annual revenue of less than $25,000 need to file an online return. Previously, nonprofits of that size did not need to file returns. Organizations whose fiscal year ended December 31 had to file by May 15. Those nonprofits whose fiscal year ends June 30—the most common accounting cycle for colleges—need to file by November 15. The Urban Institute, which has a searchable database (http://nccsdataweb.urban.org/ PubApps/statePicker.php?prog=epostcard &display=state) of organizations that have not yet filed their IRS forms, is trying to
encourage more charities to file their tax returns to avoid losing their tax-exempt status and having to pay to have it reinstated. From: Academe Today Football Fridays All chapter members are invited to stop by the Wick Alumni Center when you’re in town this fall for the Nebraska Alumni Association’s Football Fridays! As football season approaches, remember to use diplomacy and courtesy when dealing with alumni members, friends, fans and opponents. Use your best judgment when sending emails on behalf of the chapter and avoid anything that could be construed as negative or offensive. Even those that are intended to be in jest can damage the chapter’s and university’s image. Thank you for doing your part to ensure that Nebraska retains its reputation has having the best fans in college football. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly At this time, in anticipation of the Chapter Leadership conference sessions, we are asking for your assistance with the afternoon session: “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”. “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” will be an opportunity on Friday afternoon for chapter leaders to share recent successes, failures, and on-thejob lessons. By filling out the attached form and returning it to Brooke Janousek by August 20th , you will help ensure that this session is thorough, organized, and useful to the participants. You may certainly share other ideas the day of the event (and throughout the conference), but allowing us to review your submissions in advance will be of great help in organizing the session. Take some time to think about what your words of wisdom to colleagues would be, and thank you in advance for participating in this program.

Chapter event photos online Thank you to all who share your event photos with us! The chapters are having such great events we want to show off your hard work! We have created an event photos page under our chapters and groups page on our site and will feature four events each month or quarter, depending on the season. We will post one photo from your event and then link them to your Web site or facebook page to see the rest of the photos. (http://huskeralum.org/ chapters-networks/photos/index.shtml) Chapter spotlight The chapters and group page on our Web site is the fifth highest in traffic and we think we can get it in the top three. Especially with football season coming up, people will be looking for chapters to join, watch sites to frequent, etc. Therefore, we are going to create a chapter spotlight page. This page will provide a few “quick hits” about the featured chapter such as number of members, cities you serve, how to join, etc. We will post a new chapter each month and then archive them until all are up on the page. This will hopefully increase traffic to your chapter Web sites AND membership to your chapters! By now you should have received the email survey from us. If not, here is the link one more time. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/MTYH26P
Please take a moment to fill that out so we can put the spotlight on you! If you fill out the survey you will be entered into a drawing to win an item for your chapter’s raffle this fall. Life Membership Suh promotion If you’ve thought about becoming a member of the Nebraska Alumni Association, now is the time! New life members will receive an autographed 8”x10” photo of Ndamukong Suh. Your name will also be added to the Life Endowment Wall at the Wick Alumni Center. Learn more. (http:// huskeralum.org/communications/blasts/suh-photo/ suh-photo-membership.html) Promote Nebraska...Pass it on The new Haymarket Arena, passed in a general election bond vote May 11, will help keep Lincoln vibrant, will help attract new students, and will serve as the new home to Husker Basketball beginning in 2013. Human Resource Housekeeping The Nebraska Alumni Association is pleased to offer background checks to chapters wishing to utilize this service for new officers. This is a way to protect the safety of all members, protect the integrity of the alumni association and its affiliate chapters and protect any monies handled by chapters. The process will be standard for newly formed chapters and is available free of charge to existing chapters who would like to implement the process. Sara Skretta, Director of Human Resources at the University of Nebraska Foundation, will be on the conference call April 15 to address this and answer any questions you may have. Promote Nebraska…Pass It On Some of you may remember Bill Nunez, Director of Institutional Research and Planning at UNL, from last year’s Leadership Conference. He served as the wonderful tour guide for the Innovation Campus bus tour over the lunch hour. Bill has been promoted to Chancellor Harvey Perlman’s Chief of Staff, effective May 14. Bill has been at UNL for almost seven years and has served the campus in many leadership and strategic roles, the most recent being the planning and ongoing development of Nebraska Innovation Campus,
a key initiative for the university’s future. He is also a member of the UNL graduate faculty and teaches and advises graduate students in the Department of Educational Administration.

Chapter Logos Last fall we announced newly designed chapter logos would be available for branding your chapters in your local areas. Many of you have already requested your new logos. We are still accepting requests. You will receive horizontal and vertical logos in red as well as white reversed out of red in all acceptable formats. To further your brand identity in your area, we will also produce a 4x6 banner for you to use at events or hang in Memorial Stadium on game days. You may choose between a red or a white
banner. Simply email Brooke Janousek to request your logos and banner. (bjanousek@huskeralum.org)
there is sufficient interest, we will pursue having the materials produced. (bjanousek@huskeralum.org)
*Please note, our friends in the Athletic Department would like us to pass along a friendly reminder that all chapter banners must be 4x6 to create a uniform, clean look in the stadium. This will also allow them to fit more banners in the stadium on a game day.
Volunteer Recognition Certificates Joe from North Platte gives his time every month to keeping up the books. Cindy from Chicago graciously organizes the silent auction every year. Mary from Madison always organizes the annual golf tournament. Alumni chapters are successful because of your leadership and your outstanding volunteers. Do you want to show them your appreciation at your next board meeting or Founders’ Day event? If so, The Nebraska Alumni Association will produce appreciation certificates for you to hand out to your superstar volunteers. If you wish to see a sample of the certificate and/or request certificates of your own, please visit huskeralum.org. (https://community.huskeralum.org/ Page.aspx?pid=1658&chid=6&frcrld=1)
Speakers Via DVD On Feb. 4, the alumni association teamed up with the Arizonans for Nebraska and Southern Arizonans for Nebraska for “A Night With Nebraska: Arizona Celebrates UNL.” More than 600 Alumni, fans and friends heard firsthand from UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman and Athletic Director Tom Osborne about the latest academic and athletic news, as well as future plans for the university. Former Husker Tommie Frazier spoke about his recent USO trip to Iraq, while emcee Matt Davison kept things running smoothly and even provided a little comic relief. Those in attendance also enjoyed “Taste of Nebraska” foods provided by Valentino’s and Runza. While the association has high hopes of repeating this type of program in the future, it is impractical to imagine more than one or two such “road shows” each year. If this type of program (same featured speakers) were to be made available via video for a nominal fee, would this appeal to your chapter in lieu of a speaker? While there is no real substitute for this star-studded line-up, it would allow alumni and friends to receive the same information without incurring the cost of travel and speaker honorariums. Your candid feedback on the topic is welcome via email to Brooke Janousek. If
