PUBLISHERS NOTE I hope everyone had a very happy New Year! Keep in mind the year has just started so there is plenty of time to be a BIZZYB. You will find me in the photo with Alex, one of Atlanta’s top moodels and the winner of our Holiday Party Contest. Thanks to all of you for bringing in the new year with BIZZYB Magazine. Our readership doubled during December and January because 0f your support.
Something special touched me this issue and I would like to share it with you. I had the very special pleasure of sitting down one on one with Debra Anthony, the CEO of Mizay, who you probably know is the mother of Waka Flocka. She has a heart of gold and being with her was inspirational to me. While interviewing Deb, I not only learned a lot about being a CEO and business woman, but she also helped me to understand a lot about myself. After talking with her, I now understand the different thngs I am encountering as a female in such a male dominated industy. One of the things Deb said to me is that she realizes that she does not know who she is as a person yet. That statement really blew me away. It is difficult to believe that a person of her status could be so humble and down to earth. When she spoke about her life and difficulties she has endured as a person, such as suffering the death of a spouse; I was able to relate having suffered the death of a loved one myself just two years ago. I have never felt a more spititual moment when Deb spoke about her faith in God and the love for her kids and her work as an artist. I knew then that I wanted to share these feelings with my readers. From this interview I gained the power of knowing that with the right mind set and with hard work; one can overcome severe obstacles, sicceed. ane land on top!

Trend alert!!! Several celebrities have been spotted wearing a makeup trend that is fun,
fresh, and glamorous all at the same time! The trend is “Two-Toned Eyes” and it incorporates your choice of color that will compliment your skin and/or eye color. First, try sweeping a skin toned shimmer eyeshadow all over the top lid to give it a little highlight. Then use your traditional black liner to line the top of the lid and smudge it with a liner brush or the end of a q-tip to soften the line a bit. Last step is to use your choice in colored shadow or liner: teal, purple, electric blue, etc., and use a small definition or liner brush to sweep the color on the bottom of your eye, packed right below the lash line. If you aren’t so keen on the color, try a nice metallic color like a shimmering taupe or gold! Eva Mendes is wearing Sephora’s Jumbo 12HR Wear Waterproof liner in GREEN. I mean, how GORG is that little pop of color!?

Getting to know
DEB Antney
Ask anyone in the game right now who
Deb Antney is and they’ll all give you similar answers: a boss, a woman of strength, a super mom, a business. The founder and CEO of Mizay Entertainment, the management house that presented to the world Gucci Mane and Nicki Minaj, is starting her new year off right. An ever budding relationship with her son and Juaquin Malphurs, who is also her client as Waka Flocka Flame and new ideas coming to life wrapped together with the glue made of family values she bestows upon her entire company is the perfect concoction for another year of fortune. Bizzy B. sat down with the business maven mogul and got the scoop on Ms. A’s success, her strive to promote female excellence in the industry and Mizay Entertainment’s newest business venture in the works for 2013.
BIZZYB: If anyone researches you, they’ll find that you are have the mind of an alpha male and the heart of a mother. Would you say this is true? How does it feel to wake up every morning knowing you are beating the odds in the industry as a female CEO?
ANTNEY: Yes, I go hard for women. I definitely embrace the female empowerment move. I wear that hat proudly. It’s a male dominated industry so when men do attack we need to stick together. I’m all about supporting those women who want to be lifted.
ANTNEY: It’s funny because I don’t look at it that way. To me, I’m just a woman who works and takes care of her own. I’m not really sure “who” I am yet (in the industry). I’m definitely not used to the fame but it humbles me and makes me appreciate how far i’ve come to make my dream into reality. I’m very humbled. I still lead the same life I did like when I was on welfare. I go to the same stores and do everything the same.
BIZZYB: Who are your role models? Who do you find an inspiration to keep going even when everything is telling you to quit? What gives you your strength and power to carry this business on your shoulders?
BIZZYB: How would you compare watching the successes of your clients to watching your baby boy succeed? Is there a special kind of feeling you have when things go well for Waka? ANTNEY: Well, first off, they are all my babies. I love bringing their visions to reality. When we all succeed, when things are going good for all of us, thats when I get that special feeling like “Yes, this is happening”. It’s a really special moment. Waka is a client at work. I love my son with all my heart but business is business. We do have a special bond, of course, I love my baby, but I give out equal opportunity love to all my artists. BIZZYB: You’ve become an ambassador for “girl-power” within the industry. Do you embrace that role? Do you consider yourself to be a role model to young business women who aspire to be a boss lady themselves?
16
BIZZYBMAG.COM
ANTNEY: Of course my main role model is the higher-power. Just knowing He blessed me is an inspiration. Anytime I think about stopping, I go back and read all the letters I have received over the years from people in jail full of encouragement or a congratulatory one. That gives me the energy to keep fighting. I can’t quit. I will say, however, my youngest son KAYO is now an artist and for some reason he always knows what to say to me. He’s definitely an inspiration. BIZZYB: What’s next for Mizay? What are your plans for the New Year? Any new artist prospects? What can we expect this year? ANTNEY: We are happy to announce that we are picking up management for reality television stars. We’re making 2013 our expansion year. So far our clients include Jim Jones and fiance Chrissy as they start their own reality show “Chrissy and Mr. Jones”, Shay and Mama D from Love and Hip Hop Atlanta and Peter Thomas of the Real Housewives of Atlanta. It’s a really exciting time for us.

Cevere Baccus Ms. Baccus has been with Deb for 11 years utilizing herself as Ms. A’s right-hand woman. She’s seen the company grow from one tiny room with a phone to what it is today. She also acted as Road Manager for Nicki Minaj, a rapper she deeply respects. One of her fondest memories is watching Waka grown up. “He makes me so proud. It’s like my little brother made it.”
India Graves Ms. Graves was only supposed to be around for three months in 2008, handling all radio promotion. She fell in love with the work, the artists and the company and is now going on her fifth year. India works closest with the artists. She’s made her mark at big labels such as RCA Records. In 2004 she founded Media Connections Music, LLC subsequently earning her a spot in that year’s Who’s Who in Black Atlanta.

n o s n i b o Larry R Larry’s the King of Queens, the man of the house. He’s also been there through thick and thin with Deb, starting his position 11 years ago as well. Robinson is in charge of all graphics and visuals as well as managing the company and artists websites. His digital media expertise landed him the position which has a huge focus on branding.
Jennings is the new female on the block as she made her debut at the Mizay offices in November of 2012. She has known Deb for over five years and was put in charge of the entire office. Her very important gate-keeping position has given her joy as she claims her love for working with artists and seeing results. BIZZY B // MUSIC
a SOCIAL KING
Byron Wright may be behind the scenes, although Billboard Magazine openly recognized him as one of the Top Power 30 Music Executives under 30 in 2011, the artists he has signed to the Performand why networking it works for him ing Rights Organization BMI keeps him in the spotlight. From popular acts such as Soulja Boy and Travis Porter to Grammy nominated and chart-topping producers Bangladesh, Kane Beatz and Interview By Beestroh Sonny Digital, Wright has his finger on the pulse of urban entertainment. As an intern for the notable Jermaine Dupri-lead imprint So So Def and Lil Jon’s BME Recordings, the Atlanta, GA native learned every aspect of the music business including marketing, production, promotion and publicity. In his current position as Director of Writer Publisher Relations at BMI Atlanta, Wright is responsible for bringing new talent to the powerhouse corporation and maintaining relationships with existing songwriters, producers and music publishers. Byron Wright talks to me, Beestroh, contributor to www.bizzybmag.com about social media, networking and what it takes to rub shoulders with the likes of Mariah Carey, Rick Ross and Chris Brown. • This industry as you well know can sometimes be a BEEST, how are you able to navigate through the politics while maintaining respect? I always try to take the high road in any matter. That even temperament has a lot to do with my background as a PK (Preacher’s Kid). I’m a respectful person. I work through situations to get the outcome I need and continue to be myself. • Reading and getting knowledge is key in any business. How has reading helped you in your climb up the success ladder? Growing up, I would go to the library and then Barnes & Noble and read everything I could, magazines included. I still spend a lot of time reading Billboard, trying to find out what’s going on in the business and learn the changes in the industry. In high school, my mom bought me All You Need to Know About the Music Business by Donald Passman and that of course has become a prerequisite book for anyone entering the business. • You are a king at networking. Why is that “N” word so important in business? • You’re very active on Twitter and Instagram, how have you been able to use both as productive business tools? Through both of those social networks, I’ve been able to get in contact with writers and producers about getting a song registered or becoming affiliated with BMI and just reaching out and establishing relationships. I’m pretty active on both Twitter and Instagram and I look at it as free promotion. Whether it’s letting people know what events BMI has going on or searching to see what people are saying about BMI and seeing how I can intervene and answers questions that people may have, it’s been very beneficial.
Networking is important to me because you never know how you can maximize what you’re already doing by getting to know someone else and building a relationship. I take a personal interest in what people do no matter what business they’re in because at some point it may help me do what I do at BMI. • You’ve been able to work with a long list of impressive musical talent. How have you managed to keep positive relationships with your clientele? I’m not just the BMI guy but be the guy that genuinely has an interest in helping and being supportive in the careers of the writers and producers. It’s not just about having the hottest writers and producers. I have built personal relationships with the people I deal with over time and they call me about things that are unrelated to music. I like to be that guy, that person that helps my writers and producers with life as well. That’s always been important to me. Do what you say you’re going to do and don’t overcommit. Being able to always deliver keeps you in good standing with people.
