Dates:

While fatigue is a normal biological state indicating the need for sleep, its occurrence in safety critical, high risk, or influential situations can lead to negative and even dangerous results. Human fatigue impacts health and well-being and overall employee performance, and can also lead to accidents, incidents, and mistakes that can be costly. This workshop is designed to provide participants with the practical tools and approaches to effectively manage fatigue in the workplace and keep employees safe and healthy. This workshop will cover:

• Practical tools to identify the 6 human fatigue risk factors.

• Analyze sleep-wake, rostering, and shift-work patterns to determine likelihood of fatigue. • Understand how to effectively use fatigue countermeasures.

• Strategies for managing the risk of fatigue leading to major human performance issues, accidents, or mistakes.

• Understand how to improve human performance, health, and well-being through development and implementation of an effective Fatigue Risk Management System (FRMS).

Clinton Marquardt, MA, RPSGT Human Fatigue Specialist

An internationally recognized Human Fatigue Specialist, Clinton has over 25 years experience working with 24/7 operations organizations, safety critical organizations, and progressive organizations that genuinely care about their people to improve performance, health & well-being, and to reduce fatigue-related risks.

Clinton is the only Fatigue Specialist to have served as Senior Human Factors Investigator with the Transportation Safety Board (TSB) of Canada where, to date, he has contributed expertise to 91 accident investigations. In this role, he has modernized the TSB’s approach to investigating the role of fatigue in human performance, accidents, and incidents, and was also responsible for writing the TSB’s 2013 Guide to Investigating Human Fatigue. In addition, Clinton has trained hundreds of professional accident investigators for many of the world’s foremost accident investigation boards using his two-step methodology for investigating fatigue. Prior to his work with the TSB, Clinton served as Technical Director of the Royal Ottawa Hospital Sleep Disorders Centre where he began his career as a neurophysiology professional in behavioural sleep medicine and human fatigue. In this role, he played an instrumental part in the development of the first digital polysomnograph system, the ‘Sandman’ system, which set the international standard and was the catalyst for the development of many similar systems.

Clinton is also a Professor of Psychology with the BAA program at Algonquin College. He holds a Master of Arts degree in Psychology with a specialization in behavioral sleep medicine and human fatigue, as well as the RPSGT designation recognized by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. An accomplished researcher and investigator, Clinton has been published widely in scholarly journals and professional resources over the years.
