Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

Neighbors Helping Neighbors From The Editor Kim Thomas Some people are innately altruistic, and when a group of like-minded people come together and decide to lead efforts to support charities, magic happens. Four such women who were all volunteering with Make A Wish in Tampa decided they wanted to find a way to help the people right in their own community. So, in 2008, with hearts of gold, Kathi Givens, Rose Chervitz, Karen Levine, all from Palm Harbor, and Carol Wood of Lutz, formed 4 Hearts, an organization that isn’t for any specific charity; rather, 4 Hearts raises funds for many local charities. 4 Hearts is a member of The Champions Fund, Inc., a 501c 3 taxexempt organization. “We were volunteering in Tampa but we all live on this side of the Bay so we wanted to host events here,” says Rose. “We are very grassroots. If we read in the paper that there is a shortage of school supplies, we act right away.” The women had the idea to develop an “Email Life Tree” so

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

that when a need arose in their community, they could easily contact everyone by sending out mass emails. Rose explains, “We know that most everyone wants to volunteer and help out but people are very busy, so if we make it easy for the community to help, so many people will participate.” Last winter, when we had a lasting cold snap – something many in our part of Florida aren’t prepared for – 4 Hearts went into action. “The Shepherd Center was short on coats at the time,” says Rose. “We recognized an immediate need and sent out an email blast asking everyone on the email tree to donate unused coats.” The email worked and 4 Hearts was able to help a lot people to stay warm last winter. Most recently, the group, which has grown from the original four, organized the 4th Hearts of Gold fundraiser which was a huge success and benefited the Shepherd’s Center in Tarpon Springs, the Homeless Emergency Project, Living in Faith and the Temple Ahavat Shalom. Went-

worth Country Club donated the space for the event which was very successful and a fun time for all participants with entertainment by Palm Harbor University High School’s chorus. Since the first Hearts of Gold fundraiser, proceeds have more than doubled. In November and December, 4 Hearts was busy with a food drive and will distribute well over 200 holiday dinners to needy families. In honor of National Wear Red Day on February 3, promoting women’s heart health awareness, the ladies are organizing volunteers to work at various locations throughout Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. 4 Hearts continues to grow and help more and more local charities. The biggest fundraising event is coming on May 4th when the 4 Hearts Golf Tournament will be held at Cypress Run Golf Club. If you’d like to volunteer, donate or find out more information about 4 Hearts, email Carol@4-Hearts.org or visit www.4-Hearts.org.

A Baby Boomer’s Journey: Pumping Iron to Pursuing Pilates By Kathleen Devine

It’s true! I am a baby boomer and chances are so are you, if you are reading this article. Officially, boomers are those born between 1946 and 1964 and there are approximately 78 million of us. Unofficially, there are only two things boomers want more than financial security; health and mobility! Boomers are the fastest growing segment of the health club market and Pilates is the perfect solution for boomers because it provides a full body workout without the wear and tear that is associated with the “no pain – no gain” mentality of the past. Like most of us who refuse to believe we are really getting older, my chronic lower back pain hit in slow waves through my 40’s, creeping up on me until I could no longer run because of it. Even more shocking, bending over to tie my shoes took my breath away. How did this happen to me? I was a tough Army girl who was Airborne and Air Assault qualified. I pumped iron in my 20’s and 30’s and did every aerobic exercise known to man, not to mention exercises unique to Army training. I was still jumping out of planes at 39 and retired after 23 years of service at the young age of 45. But it took me five more years to find PILATES and take control of my back pain and my body. I drove past the big blue Euro Pilates sign almost daily for a year. I always meant to stop and check it out but it was constant lower back pain (LBP) and a family member’s

4

suggestion to try Pilates that finally made me pull-in on a whim. Maria Ivanova , a former Russian Rhythm Gymnast and owner of Euro Pilates, greeted me at the door and I hesitantly told her about my failed attempts at reducing my back pain. I felt compelled to convince her I had always been athletic; a hard sell standing there at 215 bloated, menopausal, stressed out pounds. Fortunately for me, she just had a cancellation and challenged me to a workout right then. I was in! There was no way I was going to let a 30something, 110-lb. former gymnast, scare me (a boomer) away from an unplanned workout. It was the best thing I have ever done for my back, my body and my family. That first 55-minute session worked my body in ways I had never experienced. It’s a familiar saying for those new to Pilates, “I have never worked so hard, moving so little.” I was soaked and humbled because exercises I had done hundreds of times in the gym, I could now barely master because of the focus, coordination, balance and muscle involvement required by Pilates. Instinctively, I knew that Pilates made sense for my body and I made a commitment to get myself healthy again. I saw a quote by Joseph Pilates that read, “In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 you will see the difference and in 30, you'll have a whole new body.” Little did I know that I would start seeing the difference around my third Pilates session! I started doing Pilates three times a week in hopes of avoiding in-

jection therapy and possibly surgery. At this point, multiple physical therapy programs had not worked and living with an 8/9 pain level was not healthy. Add to that the stress of my husband’s five tours to Afghanistan, two moves in two years, kids and the chance of more deployments in the future and you get the idea! My body was controlling me, instead of me controlling it, and my back was taking the brunt of it. That was until Maria and Pilates put me back (no pun intended) in control. Maria is an expert at assessing body alignment and function and knows just what exercises will help strengthen and balance imbalanced muscles. She hovered over me like a drill sergeant, barking commands, poking and prodding muscles that I was sure she could not really see, telling me over and over that I wasn’t “fully” engaged. I wanted to work hard and she worked me harder. After the third session, I noticed my pants were getting loose and my bloated stomach

had gone down. I had more energy and my back was feeling better and in a few weeks I started exercising on my non-Pilates days. I added Chiropractic care and neuromuscular massage therapy to my program to help retrain my body, muscles,

I coached the 5 and 6 year old soccer team at our church, I am able to keep up with my three beautiful children (including a 9-month old), and my husband is happier because I am happier. The biggest surprise since starting Pilates comes on the professional level and a decision to switch career fields. I am now a STOTT Pilates instructor hoping to inspire, train, teach, coach and mentor other boomers to take charge of their Kathleen (far right) is now an instructor health and make a change! at Euro Pilates in Tampa I often think about where I would be today if I had not met ligaments and fascia to support a the driving force behind my transhealthy alignment and my back pain formation, Maria Ivanova. Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss is Changing Lives! By Kim Thomas There are a lot of things in life that you can’t control, but your weight shouldn’t be one of them. It is common knowledge that maintaining a healthy weight is essential to overall health and longevity. Yet, it isn’t always easy to lose pounds. Sometimes it is more than you can do on your own. That is when to turn to the experts at Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss (DCWL), which was the 2011 Gold Winner in The Suncoast News’ Best of Suncoast contest. Accessibility and convenience are important, so DCWL takes appointments seven days a week, including evenings, at the two locations in the area, Suncoast Urgent Care of Trinity on S.R. 54 and Suncoast Urgent Care in Spring Hill. Peter Duic, MD, and John Opyoke, MD, developed the weight loss program. The two doctors also are the founders of Suncoast Urgent Care (formerly Trinity Urgent Care in Trinity) and have medical expertise in weight loss, bariatric medicine, endocrinology, gastroenterology and car-

diology. At DCWL, the doctors and dietitian individualize the program for each client, working closely with the clients, providing them with the tools, knowledge and support that it takes to be successful during the program and beyond. Susan Opyoke, RDLD, the registered dietitian at DCWL, earned her Bachelor of Science in Dietetics and Institutional Management and completed a clinical internship at West Virginia University Hospital. After completion of her internship she was eligible for and passed the national Registration Examination to earn her RD. She is an excellent resource as she has a vast knowledge of nutritional and dietary needs, with a specialization in diabetic and renal nutrition. If clients desire, Susan is available to them at no extra cost – even after they reach their goal weight; meeting with the dietitian is not a requirement of the plan. Susan is available to meet with clients in person by appointment, but most often they choose to contact her via email or phone when they have a quick question or need some en-

The Cleaning Angel Celebrates 20 Years of Cleaning Excellence By Dara Tucker Twenty years ago an angel started in the cleaning business. Donna Ferrante, who we now know as the owner of The Cleaning Angel, started cleaning for an elderly woman who was receiving Hospice care back in the 1990s. As a single mother, Donna was cleaning to earn extra money as a second job, but it quickly became clear to both her and her clients that caring for people’s houses was her purpose, a way to make others feel good about their surroundings. Donna was crowned the cleaning angel by the elderly woman she bonded with who she was cleaning for, after she left a crystal angel for her one day when she cleaned. The woman told her caretaker that Donna was her cleaning angel, and shortly after passed away. All these years later, Donna was still emotional as she told me the story, but feels blessed for the client who provided the foundation for her current thriving business, and knows she would be proud of where The Cleaning Angel is now.

16

Donna was born and raised in a small town in the white mountains of New Hampshire called Gorham. Being half Italian and half French Canadian, she was raised in her small community to be a hard worker, honest and dependable. She comes from a family of entrepreneurs. Back home in New Hampshire her family has owned an Italian restaurant for over 65 years, now going into a fifth generation. Donna explains, “The dedication and success in my cleaning business is due to the closeness of my wonderful family. My mother and my grandmother taught me to reach out to people and give from my heart and the feeling that you get back is more than money can buy, and that is more important than anything. I am proud and honored to say that I am following in the footsteps of my parents and grandparents. We know how to cook, clean and we give 100 percent to the business.” In addition to her family’s influence, Donna attributes the success of her company to a determined attitude, a tremendous amount of ambition and

meticulous attention to detail, which is accompanied by an unstoppable drive. An example of this drive was when after years of working on her own, she broke her ankle and hand in an accident. Donna knew she couldn’t continue cleaning on her own, and prayed for the future of her business. She didn’t let this change in her life ruin her business, but instead turned into a blessing, by making the decision to hire her first “angel.” This decision, and her determination, helped to expand Donna’s business to what it is today. The Cleaning Angel’s staff is considered by Donna to be part of her family, and happy “angels” means happy clients. When one of the “angels” needed to make extra money and worked six days a week for four months straight, all with a smile on her face, Donna showed her gratitude by giving her an extra bonus. Donna explains that when someone from The Cleaning Angel comes to clean your house, they know their hard work is appreciated and rewarded, which means you’ll consistently get a thorough cleaning that won’t disappoint you. Comment cards are used for communication from the customer to Donna to make sure the job was done correctly also help ensure customers are not only happy with the first cleaning, but every cleaning with The Cleaning Angel. I first met Donna when I was put on bed rest, and needed help keeping my house clean. I needed temporary help just for a couple of months. The Cleaning Angels were able to accommodate me in their schedule during that time, and I was happy to have a clean house without having to sign a cleaning contract. They were truly there for my family when we needed them. Robin and Christine formed The Cleaning Angels team that kept my house

pristinely clean. They pay attention to details, such as dusting the blinds, and making the hardwood floors looks like they are brand new. Hard water stains are no match for these girls either. They have the correct cleansers to make the bathroom tiles sparkle. Each time they left my house it not only looked clean, it smelled clean, and healthy. Donna isn’t just an angel to her customers and staff, but also to the community. For years she has chosen a child in need from the Christmas Angel Tree and provided them with gifts. This year, to celebrate 20 years in business, The Cleaning Angel donated part of the proceeds from all new customers in the months of November and December towards the Christmas Angel Tree program. “It was very rewarding to be able to give to more children than ever this year,” says Donna. For 20 years Donna Ferrante has been building her business and reputation in the area as being a hard worker who’s not afraid to use a little elbow grease. Let her angels put their hard work to work for you. “After 20 years of being here in Florida, I am thankful for my blessings: a wonderful family, my busi-

ness, my customers and my cleaning angels, my health, my home and my future. I want to thank everyone in my life who have helped me get where I am today. God bless to all,” says Donna.

Trinity Urgent Care is Now Suncoast Urgent Care By Kim Thomas There is never a convenient time to be sick or injured. Many times trouble hits on the weekend or after most doctor’s offices close. For nearly five years, when residents need to be seen by a doctor right away, they have turned to the familiar urgent care center that is conveniently located in the Trinity Village Center on S.R. 54; known as Trinity Urgent Care since July 2007, the only thing that has changed is the name. You’ll still receive the same excellent care that prompted readers of The Suncoast News to vote Suncoast Urgent Care as the number one accredited and dedicated urgent care facility in the community. Open seven days a week, and evenings, with no appointment necessary, it’s convenient and the doctors are there for you. “This place has been extremely well-embraced in the community,” says Dr. Duic. “A lot of people have come in and have brought their whole families in with anything from colds to minor injuries. We are very patient-

oriented and our patients enjoy that the whole staff is very friendly and prompt.” Founders and Suncoast Urgent Care physicians, John P. Opyoke, M.D., and Peter C. Duic, M.D., drew from their years of experience in emergency medicine to create each of the two state-of-the-art facilities located in Trinity and Spring Hill. Dr. Opyoke and Dr. Duic are both residencytrained in Emergency Medicine and both doctors are Board Certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine; this is important because they are both specifically trained to handle all types of emergencies. Dr. Duic received his medical degree from The Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City and received his training in Emergency Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Prior to emergency medicine, Dr. Duic trained in orthopedic surgery at University of Massachusetts Medical School. Dr. Opyoke received his medical degree from West Virginia University, where he also completed a three-year

residency in Emergency Medicine. Prior to opening Suncoast Urgent Care, the two doctors worked together as emergency room physicians at Community Hospital in New Port Richey and at Regional Medical Center at Bayonet Point. Both family men, Dr. Opyoke and Dr. Duic designed a facility that is upscale and comfortable with an exceptional level of care, so parents can feel secure about bringing their precious child in for medical care – they wanted to create an environment where in which they would want their

The spacious waiting room has a large, flatscreen TV, hot coffee and hot chocolate if you’d like, and a separate children’s waiting room with many favorite DVDs, books and games. Suncoast Urgent Care offers Occupational Health Services, including drug testing, Department of Transportation physicals, and treating workrelated injuries for local retail, service, industrial and corporate businesses. Many business owners feel comfortable knowing that their employee will have the same physician overseeing their care from the onset of the injury until it is resolved. Suncoast Urgent Care believes in an early intervention approach with the goal of treating injured workers and returning them to the jobsite as quickly and safely as possible.

Keystone Korner “Home of the Hot Pressed Cuban & Villa of the Pizzeria” By Katie Thomas There is nothing quite like a delicious slice of pizza, a hot pressed Cuban or your favorite deli sandwich from a local shop that has been serving up delicious treats for seventeen years. Keystone Korner, on the corner of Crawley Road and Tarpon Springs Road, has just what you need when looking for a quick bite to eat; whether you want breakfast, lunch, a snack or dinner! Keystone Korner was opened in Odessa over seventeen years ago by the Branigan family. Working together, the family cleaned up a piece of property and opened their shop in order to serve locals with fresh sandwiches, produce and microbrews. Over the years, Keystone Korner has evolved into what it is today; a favorite local spot to swing by and grab a tasty meal and a refreshing beverage. Siblings Tom, Chris and Terri Branigan took over running Keystone Korner from their parents and have stuck to the original goal to serve tasty food in

The Branigans buy local meats, breads, produce and ice cream so you can rest assured that your food is fresh and delicious at Keystone Korner!
