Trinity Area Neighborhood News

Neighbors Helping Neighbors From The Editor Kim Thomas Some people are innately altruistic, and when a group of like-minded people come together and decide to lead efforts to support charities, magic happens. Four such women who were all volunteering with Make A Wish in Tampa decided they wanted to find a way to help the people right in their own community. So, in 2008, with hearts of gold, Kathi Givens, Rose Chervitz, Karen Levine, all from Palm Harbor, and Carol Wood of Lutz, formed 4 Hearts, an organization that isn’t for any specific charity; rather, 4 Hearts raises funds for many local charities. 4 Hearts is a member of The Champions Fund, Inc., a 501c 3 taxexempt organization. “We were volunteering in Tampa but we all live on this side of the Bay so we wanted to host events here,” says Rose. “We are very grassroots. If we read in the paper that there is a shortage of school supplies, we act right away.” The women had the idea to develop an “Email Life Tree” so

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

that when a need arose in their community, they could easily contact everyone by sending out mass emails. Rose explains, “We know that most everyone wants to volunteer and help out but people are very busy, so if we make it easy for the community to help, so many people will participate.” Last winter, when we had a lasting cold snap – something many in our part of Florida aren’t prepared for – 4 Hearts went into action. “The Shepherd Center was short on coats at the time,” says Rose. “We recognized an immediate need and sent out an email blast asking everyone on the email tree to donate unused coats.” The email worked and 4 Hearts was able to help a lot people to stay warm last winter. Most recently, the group, which has grown from the original four, organized the 4th Hearts of Gold fundraiser which was a huge success and benefited the Shepherd’s Center in Tarpon Springs, the Homeless Emergency Project, Living in Faith and the Temple Ahavat Shalom. Went-

worth Country Club donated the space for the event which was very successful and a fun time for all participants with entertainment by Palm Harbor University High School’s chorus. Since the first Hearts of Gold fundraiser, proceeds have more than doubled. In November and December, 4 Hearts was busy with a food drive and will distribute well over 200 holiday dinners to needy families. In honor of National Wear Red Day on February 3, promoting women’s heart health awareness, the ladies are organizing volunteers to work at various locations throughout Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. 4 Hearts continues to grow and help more and more local charities. The biggest fundraising event is coming on May 4th when the 4 Hearts Golf Tournament will be held at Cypress Run Golf Club. If you’d like to volunteer, donate or find out more information about 4 Hearts, email Carol@4-Hearts.org or visit www.4-Hearts.org.

Community News Briefs

By Diane Galemmo Kudos to Best Swimmer in Pasco County History Mitchell High Junior Devin McCaffrey has the extraordinary distinction of being the most accomplished swimmer in Pasco County history; and he has never lost a single dual-meet race here in Pasco. He is a 2010-2011 state champion who has earned three state gold medals, two silvers and one bronze. As the defending state champion, he duplicated his results by winning multiple gold medals at the state championship in November, 2011. McCaffrey finished first at state in both the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.97 seconds, and the 100yard breast stroke with a time of 49.10 seconds, his personal best and where he narrowly edged out Pace High School‘s Ryan Funk. Both were neckand-neck going into the final stretch. “Last year I wasn’t expecting it (to win a state title),” says McCaffrey. “This year, though, I’ve done it before

4

(as a sophomore) and my goal was to win. I just wanted to see if I could do it again.” McCaffrey set personal records by more than a second in both the butterfly and the breast stroke. He also became the first Pasco County swimmer to win three individual state titles and was the first to win multiple titles at the same meet. There are two Mitchell girl swimmers who also shine – they are senior Mazie Siddens, who was named the Pasco County Girls Swimmer of the Year by the St. Pete Times, (McCaffrey was also named Swimmer of the Year), and freshman Taylor Anderson, who is able to swim pretty much anything. She mostly does the 50, 100 Free and 100 Fly, but when needed she can swim the 500 Free. The state championship marked the end of the season. A time to rest? Not for McCaffrey. To keep his winning edge, McCaffrey trains six days a week at Countryside Country Club in Clearwater with the Tampa Bay

Aquatics, a U.S.A. swimming registered team. His objective is to duplicate the same outstanding swim results when he enters his senior year. McCaffrey comes from a swimloving family. One of his older sisters, Caitlin, was a two-time conference champion in the 100 breaststroke. The other, Meghan, was the Times North Suncoast swimmer of the year in 2006 after winning the 50 free and 100 butterfly at state. Even then, however, Devin was regarded as the family’s best swimmer. Snuggle Up to Cuddles, Support Kid’s Camp Cuddles was created by the Gulfside Regional Hospice’s Bereavement Department to bring comfort to children, and adults, who have experienced a loss or have been recently diagnosed with an illness. It is a soft, squeezable dog that provides companionship to any child, teen or adult. When a child or teen is grieving after the loss of a loved one, it is comforting to hold a stuffed animal and feel a sense of solace. This stuffed animal often is there to listen to the child’s deepest thoughts and feelings and offer a soft hug.

JANUARY 2012

For a donation of $20, this cuddly dog comes in male or female versions. Gulfside’s Bereavement Center has Cuddles on display in each of its thrift shops located around Pasco County. You can also have a look at, and purchase, Cuddles via Gulfside’s web site, www.GRHospice.org. Cuddles is actually available to take home today,” says Director of Bereavement Sonia Quinones. “Just call me at the Bereavement Community Center and you can take one home with you.“ The bereavement center is in New Port Richey at 6224 Lafayette St., tel: 844-3946. The mission of Gulfside Regional Hospice is to provide compassionate, quality care to individuals and their loved ones as they face life-limiting illnesses. All bereavement services are provided free of charge to Pasco County residents regardless of previous participation with hospice, and includes support groups, the Mending Hearts Kids’ Program and individual counseling. All proceeds from the sales of Cuddles support the “Rhythm of the Spirit” camp for kids. In 2012, the fifth annual “Rhythm of the Spirit” See “News Briefs” on page 42.

Happy “Yappy” Hour By Diane Galemmo Just like we humans enjoy an occasional happy-hour drink, now your dog can too; every second Thursday of the month, Alli Gators Restaurant at 3523 Little Road in Trinity provides an enjoyable “Yappy Hour” experience for your dog from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. “Yappy Hour” is the brainchild of Kim Crane, owner of Paw Wash Plus, a pet-sitting grooming and supply business located at 2319 Seven Springs Blvd. Crane pitched the idea to Warren Dunphy, owner of Alli Gators, and Marty Bernardi, its general manager. The idea went over big with them. (Alli Gators has a history of involvement in community events) and in early summer 2011, “Yappy Hour,” was launched. “We’re set up perfectly to do it,” says Dunphy. “We have the outside deck, and then we also have a second outdoor deck with a grassy area. It was a perfect match – no one else was doing it. We’ve been talking about doing it for a long time and right around that same time Paw Wash Plus

8

approached us, so we agreed to combine our efforts and get something going; it has taken off, so it’s been real good.” Paw Wash organizes each party; Alli Gators provides the space. Dunphy mentioned they also have a mechanical bull out on the deck, it duplicates the sensation of riding a bucking bronco.) “It’s been working great,” says Dunphy about Yappy Hour. “Especially when we did it for Halloween – we had a canine costume party for the dogs. We had about 100 dogs here dressed up in costume. Then we did another one for Christmas. We had a huge crowd and the dogs were once again in costume. We had a gift for the dogs and special drinks for their owners. When a patron orders a drink, a fresh bowl of water comes out automatically for his or her canine companion – along with a doggy biscuit. The restaurant has developed a menu of “Yappy Hour” specials for its canine clientele, including “biscuit bites” and “dog-trick bites.” Dog owners can order drink specials such as

a $2.50 Mut-garita, Pawtini or Doggy Daiquiri. If Rex is extra good, owners can buy him a Pooper Scooper – not what you may think. It’s a mound of vanilla ice cream with a big dog biscuit propped up in the middle. Although occasional barks are heard, the dogs generally play well with each other. “Yappy Hour” is also an opportunity for networking since pet-store owners and groomers also come. And pet owners will receive 10% off their entire bill. “Normally, we have about 35 or 40 dogs on a normal Thursday,” says Dunphy. “But as the word spread, it’s been getting a little bigger every month. In February we’re planning a special event for Valentine’s Day. Paw Wash Plus is sponsoring the event in conjunction with the SPCA. Most of the events benefit a pet organization, such as the SPCA, Rescue Dogs, and Raffle Rescue Inc. (a local group that helps families keep their pets during financially difficult times). When we do the Thursday event, we give back 10% of all the sales from the event to a pet organization,” says Dunphy. All friendly, vaccinated, leashed dogs are welcome. Human guests need not be accompanied by a dog,

JANUARY 2012

but there are a few other rules. Bags are provided, and owners are expected to clean up after their pets. Dogs must be kept on their leashes, and aggressive behavior is not tolerated. Bernardi says he has not had to bounce a canine for bad behavior yet. “We just did a big thing for foster kids also,” Dunphy adds. “We had 113 kids here on December 19. “The kids are part of a foster program in Pasco.” Lynn Walters, who was running it, is part of Angel Tree, and it is she who determines, hopefully, the most needy. We completely fed them, we had Santa Claus here, and we had tons of gifts for everyone.” For more information about “Yappy Hour” call Alli Gators at 376-3867 or call Kim Crane of Paw Wash Plus at 375-7070.

“If You Can Peel Potatoes, You Can Carve!” Contributed by Charlotte Pierce Really? Bunnie Sheets, Calusa Wood Carver’s featured carver for their 31st annual show and sale, to be held on March 3rd and 4th, thinks so. She uses that line on all who stop at her display table or stop by to watch her carve. Most of them smile, sit down, and reach for the knife and piece of proffered wood to begin a new life adventure. She’s brought many carvers into the fold this way. Bunnie was born on Easter, thus the name. She started carving in 1986 at the local CARES Senior Center. Originally she used a knife and gouges but a total shoulder replacement changed her to power. Her favorite subjects are all forms of wildlife and Native American motifs. Basswood and butternut are her woods of choice. Bunnie gets ideas for her carvings from photos and magazines, but will draw her own patterns and cut the wood on her band saw or scroll saw. She said she frequently doesn’t know how the piece will end up, as she im-

Her favorite finishes are oil paints because you have a longer time to blend colors, but she does a lot of airbrushing for intricate effects. She uses shadowing, and a mixing of colors to avoid a solid color finish. Come and join the Angel Family! See what some of our loyal customers have to say! Valentine’s Day Gift Certificates Available! on 20 years in the business to Donna and her teams. C ongratulations Donna and The Cleaning Angels initially came to my home in 2010 to offer an evaluation of my cleaning needs. It took only one visit to recognize that their service was considerably different than my previous ones. Their reliability, honesty and dedication to excellent service has proven itself again and again. -Michelle Marquis, Clearwater, Florida We have used The Cleaning Angel Cleaning Service for the past two and a half years. Every two weeks we are more than satisfied with the service especially with Ileah who has been the head of the cleaning team that services our home. Their work is a very thorough professional cleaning. They are always prompt, courteous, trustworthy and willing to adapt to our schedule. Along with the regular cleaning each time, they include the baseboards, light fixtures and ceiling fans, blinds and much much more. Our home is always sparkling every time. -Sue and John Kelly Wyntree, New Port Richey, FL I hired the Cleaning Angels over a year ago to help keep my house clean, so I would have time to pick up more shifts at work, to help make ends meet. On my initial interview with Donna Ferrante, she came to my home and we walked through the house together. She gave details of her business and work ethic and expectations for customer satisfaction. Donna and her staff are extremely personable and very professional. I feel like everyone cares if I am satisfied or not. The Cleaning Angels staff has gone above and beyond to work with my husband and my difficult work schedules. I highly recommend the Cleaning Angels to assist in housing maintenance. They do a great job, they are reasonably priced, and with the time I save from having to clean the house myself, I am able to pick up extra shifts at work and do other errands and chores. Love, Love, Love!!!! -Jennifer Mugianis, Tarpon Springs, FL We have used The Cleaning Angel for just over a year and I wonder how we ever got by without them! Our first meeting was with the company's owner, Donna; she made us feel very confident and comfortable about the service her company would be providing. Donna assured us that what was promised would be delivered because it was her name on the line. As business owners ourselves the message was loud and clear and we decided to give them a try. The Cleaning Angel has provided the phenomenal service that Donna promised and more. Our regular team, Ivonne and Anna are dependable, honest, pleasant, hardworking and efficient. They come in and get the job done. Thank you "Cleaning Angels" for making the task of maintaining my home easier on me! -Esther and Michael Halman, Crescent Oaks, Tarpon Springs, FL

Before I started with the Cleaning Angels, I had tried numerous cleaning services. I was never happy with the results until I met Donna six years ago. She actually was still cleaning herself at that time. Congratulations for expanding your business and making it to 20 years. The service is always excellent - they are prompt, efficient, professional, and their appearance is always great. They always have the correct products and equipment and their attention to detail goes above and beyond. My current lead is Ileah and she has been cleaning my house for several years and I just love her. I am very active in the Trinity community and have recommended the Cleaning Angels to many people. -Sandy Alekson, Champions Club, Trinity, FL

Nine years ago, I was looking for a cleaning lady and found Donna. At that time she went by Donna’s Cleaning Service. She cleaned my home herself for about two years. When she broke her foot and had to hire girls to help out, I initially was concerned. However that concern was short lived as Donna trains her girls to clean exactly like she does. Since then these girls come into my home and do their magic. I have many disabilities and they go way beyond to make sure that my house is clean and that I am happy. They do special things for me to make my life easier. I want to thank Sandy who use to clean my home and now is in the office with Donna. Congratulations for all your accomplishments Donna! -Fran Mischler, Port Richey, FL I have had the great pleasure of hiring and being in the company of the Cleaning Angels Cleaning Service. They are incredibly accommodating and have superior customer service. I have rarely come across a service organization that is so professional and extremely pleasant to work with. Every time "the Angels " come to my house, it gets better and better. Budget cuts have hit the majority of Americans, but I will give up other things before I would ever consider giving up "my Angels". -Tina Redmond, Keystone Bluffs, Tarpon Springs, FL The Cleaning Angel has been a consistent and dependable cleaning service, working around our family, house guests and home construction. They have been responsive to our special requests and once they know what we like, they provide great value added customer service. I would recommend them to others. -Susan Rolston, East Lake Woodlands, Oldsmar, FL I was looking for a cleaning service and was referred to The Cleaning Angels. I didn’t think they would come this far but called them anyway and they were more than happy to put me in their schedule. I live a 440 West and the girls are cleaning up this town. There have been a lot of unhappy people in the Clearwater Beach area and now word is out. We finally found the best. Congratulations Donna and so happy to have found you. -Katherine Sullivan, Clearwater Beach, FL As far as I am concerned there is only one cleaning service in the Tampa Bay area and that is the Cleaning Angels. They came into my home the first time and did a deep spring clean and was I ever blown away. I have never seen a cleaning service do the detail work these girls did. Donna sent four girls and they stayed for seven hours and my home is about 2700 sf. They hand washed all my baseboards, did the blinds in a three step process, washed every door and door frame in the whole house, moved every little knick knack and got into every little corner possible. Two weeks before I used a different service that promised a spring clean. They sent two girls that stayed in my home for 2-½ hours. After throwing my money away I was referred to Donna by someone in Land o Lakes. I’ve told many people if you are looking for your home to be cleaned correctly, don’t waste your time on other maid services. Call the Cleaning Angels if you want it done right and you will never have to find anyone else. Congratulations on your 20 years and hope you have many, many more. -Betty Bennett, Odessa, FL

Donna and her team at Cleaning Angels have been cleaning our house for over 4 years now and have done a terrific job. They are dependable, friendly, thorough and trustworthy. Her teams are willing to go the extra mile to make sure our home is extremely clean. Having the Cleaning Angel team clean our house has most importantly allowed us the valuable time that we typically would have spent cleaning, to be spent with our family. Aged to Perfection! By Amy Paterson The Cheese Lodge, located on Grand Boulevard in historic Elfers, has been serving the New Port Richey area and beyond for 30 years strong, and boy does this store age well! Opened in 1982, The Cheese Lodge has only gotten better over the years and offers a full selection of import and domestic cheeses, including some of the finest in the world, and taking care to ensure that each variety is aged to perfection. You’ll also find premium

deli meats, as well as specialty food items at The Cheese Lodge. Alice Mazur, owner and operator of The Cheese Lodge, is an expert when it comes to the world of cheese, as she literally grew up in the business. The story behind The Cheese Lodge is interesting and reinforces the fact that the United States really is a land of opportunity. Born in Poland, Alice learned from a young age all the ins-and-outs of the cheese business from her parents, Stanley and Helen. Stanley was a

hard-working man who brought his family over from Poland in 1962 when Alice was just five years old and her brother was six. He came over to America to secure a job and earn enough money to get his family settled, while Alice’s mother, still in Poland, waited patiently for her traveling papers to come through. In October, 1962, Helen finally received her papers so that she and her young children could make their way to the United States to reunite with Stanley and live the “American Dream.” On this particular day in October, it also became clear that the United States was faced with the Cuban Missile Crisis. Determined to get her children to America, Helen pushed through with her travel plans. She and the kids barely made it, but after a long journey overseas, they were finally reunited with Stanley and settled in Pennsylvania. Alice’s father started selling cheese at local auctions and county fairs as a side job. The whole family would go with him to help out. Alice says that she always enjoyed the time she got to spend with her family during these events and took care to learn everything her mother and father knew

about cheese, including how to care for and store it properly. She also learned the tricks of aging each kind of cheese to perfection. As a young adult, Alice started driving her refrigerated truck down to Florida in the winter months to sell cheese at the farmers’ markets, while enjoying a break from the cold weather up north. While visiting a farmer’s market in 1981, Alice met a man who came to her booth with a proposal. He was the owner of the Harvey Edwards Department Store that used to be located in Holiday. He had noticed Alice and thought she did an excellent business, so he offered her a spot in the department store to sell her cheese. He said she could set up anywhere in the large store that she saw fit. Alice took him up on his offer and set up shop right in between the entrance and the exit doors. As people entered she would offer them a sample of cheese, and often enough, when they went to leave they would buy a bit of cheese to take home. After about a year at the Harvey Edwards store, Alice decided it was time to open her own storefront. She knew she liked the area after spending a year in Holiday, so she looked

Better Cheese, Better Price! The Cheese Lodge takes pride in offering quality cheese at competitive prices to its customers. You will even notice some varieties that you can also find at the grocery stores, but here at The Cheese Lodge, you will find better prices and better overall taste. The Cheese Lodge carries specialty cheeses, including many that are hard to find and vintage-aged cheese. There is

even cheese curd available. Many cheeses resemble cheeses from different regions of the world and go by another name, but are similar in taste and quality. Although Alice has a vast selection of different cheese varieties, she says, “If I don’t have exactly what you’re looking for, I probably have something close, and maybe even better!” Alice Mazur is without a doubt an expert in ‘cheese-ology’ and

in case of emergency, she has a copy of the World Atlas of Cheese behind the counter that she can reference for back-up. The Cheese Lodge offers other food items that are the perfect pairing for the many cheeses of the world, such as the “Amish Wedding” products shipped in from the Troyer Cheese Company, which is located in the heart of Ohio’s Amish Country. You will find a nice selection of pickled goods, sausages, pastas, jellies and more, such as premium deli meats. Additionally, The Cheese Lodge offers locally made raw honey that is naturally delicious and healthy. Some say it even helps to alleviate seasonal allergies caused from allergens in the region. You’ll love the friendly service at The Cheese Lodge – the place to go for the best cheese around at unbeatable prices! The Cheese Lodge is located at 4134 Grand Boulevard in Elfers (between Trouble Creek Rd. and S.R. 54). Hours are Mon., 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Tues. – Fri., 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.; and 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Sat. Blarney Stone Irish Pub & Eatery Brings A Taste of the Irish to Trinity By Kim Thomas If you are looking for a restaurant that serves delicious food, has a beautiful full-liquor bar to mix your favorite libation, and has an atmosphere that is upbeat where the conversation flows easily, then step into Blarney Stone (on Mitchell Boulevard at Trinity Commons) and you’ll feel like you stepped into a pub in Ireland. Co-owners and managers John and Bridget Egan are both from Ireland, so it is important to them that their restaurant is Irish through-and-through, right down to the kilt-wearing wait staff, the picturesque murals of Irish countryside, and the authentically Irish food selections. At the Blarney Stone, you’ll receive Céad Mile Fáilte, which is “One Hundred Thousand Welcomes!” “We don’t claim to be an Irish pub; we are an Irish Pub,” says John Egan. Co-owner Mike Carvella is firsttime pub owner and is enjoying learning the business. Blarney Stone opened in July 2011 and is run by the owners, who have hired fresh talent in

the kitchen and revamped the menu to offer even more hearty Irish selections. “In Ireland, there is an old saying, ‘If you kiss the Blarney Stone, you will speak eloquently,’ or as I say, you have the gift of gab,” says John. He explained that they named the restaurant Blarney Stone because they want it to be a favorite place for people to get together for a great meal and easy conversation. He says, “The Irish are known for their hospitality, and my wife is the ambassador of Irish goodwill. At the Blarney Stone, there are no strangers, only friends that we have yet to meet.” Blarney Stone Irish Pub & Eatery is the seventh restaurant that John Egan has built. He opened the Irish Cottage Cafe on U.S. 19 in New Port Richey and Peggy O’Neils in both Palm Harbor and Oldsmar, to name a few. Prior to building restaurants, John was part of a 9-piece Irish show band that toured in the U.S. and Canada. The Egans always came here on vacation, so when they decided to semi-retire, they moved here from

Not able to stand the quiet of retirement, John decided to bring a little bit of Ireland to his new home and Blarney Stone reflects his experience. “We gutted the building and designed it like a real Irish pub,” says John. Recently, he expanded Blarney Stone, buying the adjacent building and turning it into the Emerald

Room, which is a great place to have a celebration. The Emerald Room can accommodate up to 100 guests, has its own private bar and plenty of room for a DJ or band to set up. “We built the Emerald Room to look like an old castle’s banquet hall,” says John. “We put a lot of love and effort into making it something special and created it from memories of my childhood in

There is also an outside patio in the front and on the side of the building. Daily Specials & A Great Menu Blarney Stone features daily lunch and dinners specials. Football fans will be happy to know that Blarney Stone subscribes to the NFL Ticket, making it a lively and fun place to enjoy the playoffs and the upcoming Super Bowl. There are 12 huge, flat screen TVs throughout the restaurant, so you won’t miss a second of the game. Serving authentic Irish cuisine with an American twist, the menu is filled with tasty choices for every

palate. Anna Leonpacher is the new kitchen chef and has experience working at several well-known restaurants in the area. Jerry Bryant, works parttime at Blarney Stone and part-time cooking at Heritage Springs, and is known for his phenomenal soups. Anna and Jerry work great as a team and they really know how to satisfy your hunger! Appetizers are plentiful and include unique choices such as the Irish Hot Pocket, Blarney Skins (topped with bacon, cheese, jalapeños and sour cream), Asian Tuna (seared and served with Asian slaw with soy and cucumber sauce for dipping), Guinness Cheese Fries and Kettle Chips (topped with blue cheese crumbles and Balsamic drizzle), to name a few. Chicken Wings can be ordered with your choice of sauces: mild, medium and hot, barbecue, Thai peanut, sweet chili, garlic butter or Old Bay. There is a daily soup in addition to the Irish onion soup and chili that are always available. Five different salads are on the menu and they all sound amazing - I’ve got to go back and try the Spinach Salad, with candied pecans, red onion, diced tomato and blue cheese crumbles, yum! Burgers, sandwiches and wraps are too many to name here, but we have to

mention a few. Some of my favorite named burgers are The Brotherly Love, The Kilt Buster, The Farmer and The Boxer. Sandwiches boast some pretty fun names as well, such as The Frenchman, The Irishman and The Fat Philly, plus five more. In addition to burgers and sandwiches, there are some great wraps. On a recent visit, I was fortunate to sample some of the entrees on the menu, including some delicious Irish specialties. If you are craving some hearty comfort food, try the Bangers and Mash, with its caramelized onions and potatoes this dish will satisfy your appetite, no matter how hungry you are. The Fish-n-Chips is delicious, and the mild white fish is fried to crispy perfection. No Irish restaurant would be complete without Corned Beef and Cabbage and Blarney Stone knows how to do it right! If you are in the mood for a more American-style fare, the Triple Decker

club sandwich is delicious and big enough to share. I sampled the Chicken Marsala, as well, which was tender and juicy with a perfectly seasoned creamy sauce. Other delicious entrees include Shepherd’s Pie, Birdie’s Irish Stew, Paddy’s Meatloaf, Blarney Stone Salmon and Irishman’s Scampi, plus many more. St. Patrick’s Day will be a blast at Blarney Stone, so mark your calendar. John is planning the activities now, which so far includes live music inside and outside, jump houses for the kids and much more! Visit Blarney Stone for deliciousfood, fun and lively conversation. Blarney Stone Irish Pub & Eatery is located at Trinity Commons, 7813 Mitchell Blvd., Suite 101, in Trinity and is open seven days a week, from 11 a.m. to close. BergHOFF, Where Design and Functionality Meet in the Kitchen By Julie Kanehl BergHOFF International, Inc. marries the latest technology and functionality with award-winning design and quality in each of its products. Born in Belgium in 1964, BergHOFF began distributing its fine products to high-end stores like Crate & Barrel and Neiman Marcus in 1994 as a wholesale company. Since then, BergHOFF has expanded to have a strong brand presence in over 57 countries, and their product line has grown to include more than 3,000 beautiful items aimed at making the preparation of food safe, healthy, and fun. In 2006, Owners Raymond and Deborah Van Den Langenbergh moved to the Odessa/Trinity area to house their North American headquarters, and their new location was designed to be the distribution point for all BergHOFF products that went to stores in North America, South America, Canada, Mexico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 2008, they wanted to create a showroom where they could meet with the companies that bought and sold BergHOFF products and started expanding. However, as they did so, they were surprised to find local residents knocking on the door, asking if they could come in and buy BergHOFF’s products directly. While this had never been done before in BergHOFF history, Raymond and Deborah decided to give it a chance. For people who can appreciate the kind of products that BergHOFF offers, having the opportunity to buy from them directly instead of having to shop through a third-party store is a great value. Since they opened their doors, and hung their bright “Open to the Public” sign out front, local customers have been enjoying the opportunity to buy some of the best culinary products in the world at affordable prices, right here in our back yard. If you are unfamiliar with BergHOFF, you will be impressed with the company’s dedication to its product. Offering an almost unheardof lifetime guarantee, BergHOFF’s products are the first choice of many chefs around the world. Known for their European design, ergonomic shapes, and technologically advanced

26

materials, BergHOFF creates its products with the cook in mind. BergHOFF now sells cookware, flatware, knives, porcelain, crystal, electrical devices and accessories. BergHOFF prides itself on allowing one item to do many things. Some of their most popular pots, for example, have removable lids that hold spoons, can drain out of both sides and in two different sizes, and come in a variety of beautiful colors. Made of only the finest materials, BergHOFF spends a lot of time creating energy efficient, long-lasting products. Whether you like traditional stainless steel, or prefer to use ceramic or cast iron, there is a wide variety to choose from. For the chef looking to eat healthier, waterless cookware is now available that reduces the need for using water or oil when cooking, creating a more energy efficient and cleaner way to dine. Some of their cookware is made of a material called 18/10 (T304) surgical stainless steel. This material is actually made up of more than 50 different compositions including at least 18% of chromium and 10% nickel. This six-layer (constructed of 24 elements) composite is one of the finest alloys used worldwide in the culinary industry. All of this technology is designed to properly conduct heat in your cookware, guaranteeing faster heat conduction and energy savings. This cookware is made for cooking on virtually any kind of stove, even induction heating sources, without warping. BergHOFF also sells induction stoves, which provide a more energy efficient way of cooking because they heat the cookware directly, as opposed to a traditional stove which has to spend the energy to heat the coil, which then heats the cookware, which heats the food. It all sounds like something out of a science fiction novel, but really, BergHOFF knows exactly what they’re doing, and better yet, they know how to explain it to the rest of us. Not ready for an induction stove? They have everything you might need to cook on a traditional stove, be it gas or electric. Is the grill outside more your speed? They sell those as well, only these are made of the best materials in the kitchen industry. You’ll find only the best at BergHOFF. When Deborah envisioned open-

ing up to the public, she wanted to really take the opportunity to be a part of the community. BergHOFF does this by providing educational presentations at local schools, like the Culinary School at Tarpon Springs High School, and by offering cooking classes in their showroom kitchen taught by their in-house chef and author of two cookbooks, Toni Hanes. Toni offers 2-3 cooking classes a week on everything from soups to crepes, and the classes are designed so that everyone can participate and learn the tricks-of-the-trade in a hands-on environment. Each cooking class is only $45 and lasts two hours. Deborah says, “We teach our customers how to buy smart, and use Raymond and Deborah Van Den Langenbergh, owners of BergHOFF each of our tools in many different ways.” stock their kitchen. Until recently, BergHOFF had been a Swarovski dealer, and during that time Deborah learned about one of the designers who worked for Swarovski and who designed some of their beautiful jewelry. His name was Rodrigo Otazu, and now Rodrigo has his own line of jewelry that he makes using semi-precious metals and Swarovski crystals. Known for its bold, fearless style, Otazu’s jewelry designs appeared in the movie “Sex in the City 2” and have been seen on Tyra Banks, Britney Spears, Lucy Liu, Madonna, Aretha Franklin and even Lady Gaga. Also featured in many editorial spreads in magazines such as Vogue, In Style and Elle, Otazu’s jewelry is up and coming, and will be offered right here at BergHOFF. In addition to offering other great products in their showroom, BergHOFF also has a full-service promotional department which means that local businesses can have any BergHOFF product specifically designed, engraved or packaged with your company logo on it. Trinity Urgent Care is Now Suncoast Urgent Care By Kim Thomas There is never a convenient time to be sick or injured. Many times trouble hits on the weekend or after most doctor’s offices close. For nearly five years, when residents need to be seen by a doctor right away, they have turned to the familiar urgent care center that is conveniently located in the Trinity Village Center on S.R. 54; known as Trinity Urgent Care since July 2007, the only thing that has changed is the name. You’ll still receive the same excellent care that prompted readers of The Suncoast News to vote Suncoast Urgent Care as the number one accredited and dedicated urgent care facility in the community. Open seven days a week, and evenings, with no appointment necessary, it’s convenient and the doctors are there for you. “This place has been extremely well-embraced in the community,” says Dr. Duic. “A lot of people have come in and have brought their whole families in with anything from colds to minor injuries. We are very patient-

34

oriented and our patients enjoy that the whole staff is very friendly and prompt.” Founders and Suncoast Urgent Care physicians, John P. Opyoke, M.D., and Peter C. Duic, M.D., drew from their years of experience in emergency medicine to create each of the two state-of-the-art facilities located in Trinity and Spring Hill. Dr. Opyoke and Dr. Duic are both residencytrained in Emergency Medicine and both doctors are Board Certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine; this is important because they are both specifically trained to handle all types of emergencies. Dr. Duic received his medical degree from The Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City and received his training in Emergency Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Prior to emergency medicine, Dr. Duic trained in orthopedic surgery at University of Massachusetts Medical School. Dr. Opyoke received his medical degree from West Virginia University, where he also completed a three-year

residency in Emergency Medicine. Prior to opening Suncoast Urgent Care, the two doctors worked together as emergency room physicians at Community Hospital in New Port Richey and at Regional Medical Center at Bayonet Point. Both family men, Dr. Opyoke and Dr. Duic designed a facility that is upscale and comfortable with an exceptional level of care, so parents can feel secure about bringing their precious child in for medical care – they wanted to create an environment where in which they would want their

The spacious waiting room has a large, flatscreen TV, hot coffee and hot chocolate if you’d like, and a separate children’s waiting room with many favorite DVDs, books and games. Suncoast Urgent Care’s relationship with off-site radiology providers often enables more advanced imaging such as CAT scans and MRIs to be done on the same day, if necessary, and the doctors receive the reports quickly. Suncoast Urgent Care offers Occupational Health Services, including drug testing, Department of Transportation physicals, and treating workrelated injuries for local retail, service, industrial and corporate businesses. Many business owners feel comfortable knowing that their employee will have the same physician overseeing their care from the onset of the injury until it is resolved. Suncoast Urgent Care believes in an early intervention approach with the goal of treating injured workers and returning them to the jobsite as quickly and safely as possible.

Patients Appreciate Suncoast Urgent Care Area residents have come to rely on the exceptional care at Suncoast Urgent Care. Here are just a few comments from patients.

“I’ve always come to this facility and will continue to because of the great experiences I’ve had here.”¬¬_F.F. T.C. writes, “Why do you think this was my 3rd visit? I am so happy you are in the neighborhood.” Another patient says, “It’s really nice when I’m feeling bad that I have somewhere that is close, and that is always good to me.” No ordinary walk-in clinic, Suncoast Urgent Care is an immaculate and beautifully designed medical center equipped to treat minor, non-life threatening emergencies, as well as providing the Trinity community with convenient and competent healthcare. Dr. Duic says, “We focus on making patients comfortable and giving them what they want – fast, competent care.” Suncoast Urgent Care has two locations: 10730 SR 54, Ste. 104, in Trinity and 4112 Mariner Blvd. in Spring Hill. Hours are 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Mon. – Sat.; 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Sunday. Please call (727) 372-3888 to reach the Trinity office. ForVisit www.trinityurgentcare.com for additional information.

Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss is Changing Lives! By Kim Thomas There are a lot of things in life that you can’t control, but your weight shouldn’t be one of them. It is common knowledge that maintaining a healthy weight is essential to overall health and longevity. Yet, it isn’t always easy to lose pounds. Sometimes it is more than you can do on your own. That is when to turn to the experts at Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss (DCWL), which was the 2011 Gold Winner in The Suncoast News’ Best of Suncoast contest. Accessibility and convenience are important, so DCWL takes appointments seven days a week, including evenings, at the two locations in the area, Suncoast Urgent Care of Trinity on S.R. 54 and Suncoast Urgent Care in Spring Hill. Peter Duic, MD, and John Opyoke, MD, developed the weight loss program. The two doctors also are the founders of Suncoast Urgent Care (formerly Trinity Urgent Care in Trinity) and have medical expertise in weight loss, bariatric medicine, endocrinology, gastroenterology and car-

diology. At DCWL, the doctors and dietitian individualize the program for each client, working closely with the clients, providing them with the tools, knowledge and support that it takes to be successful during the program and beyond. Susan Opyoke, RDLD, the registered dietitian at DCWL, earned her Bachelor of Science in Dietetics and Institutional Management and completed a clinical internship at West Virginia University Hospital. After completion of her internship she was eligible for and passed the national Registration Examination to earn her RD. She is an excellent resource as she has a vast knowledge of nutritional and dietary needs, with a specialization in diabetic and renal nutrition. If clients desire, Susan is available to them at no extra cost – even after they reach their goal weight; meeting with the dietitian is not a requirement of the plan. Susan is available to meet with clients in person by appointment, but most often they choose to contact her via email or phone when they have a quick question or need some en-

couragement. Susan explains, “Most people think, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m on a diet’ when they’re looking at food labels and counting calories. That’s where I really fit into the program. We teach them to look at food from a nutritional point of view.” DCWL clients are taught how to incorporate healthy cooking Patricia’s before (left) and after (right) photos tell the story of her phenonomenal success at Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss habits that not only will assist in months. An Inspiring Christmas Story Christmas came early last year for 24-year-old Tim Smith, a Trinity College student pursuing a degree in Biblical Studies. Tim was born with no legs; he had a rare genetic disorder undetected on several sonograms. Tim also has no health insurance. He’s been wearing prosthetic legs, but they were pretty much shot. “They have a slight broken joint and I use duct tape to hold them on,” says Tim. The company that makes them said a new pair would cost $31,000. So Tim had no

recourse but to use his old legs. He prayed. He hoped they wouldn’t fall apart. His fellow students, the faculty at Trinity College and his congregations at Jasmine Lakes Baptist Church in Port Richey and Fellowship Chapel in Flanders, N.J., got wind of his predicament. Many chipped in, even strangers offered money for Tim’s new legs. In four weeks, they raised $10,000. Then, Chicago White Sox pitcher Gavin Floyd and his wife Leanna, who live off season in Trinity offered to donate the additional $21,000. Floyd first learned about Tim through his mother-in-law, a former math teacher at Trinity College, who told him about Tim’s courage and determination to play sports while leaving his prosthetics on the sideline. “To know what he achieved in life really moved us,” said Floyd. Tim’s prayers were answered. “God has blessed me richly with awesome friends,“ he says. He got stateof-the-art prostheses decorated with images of Trinity’s school mascot, a Bengal tiger. He does not think of himself as disabled. He calls it an ability to display the glory of God. “He

blessed me with this gift so I could see the goodness in people and in Him.” Tim was raised in Hopatcong, NJ. Since he never had legs, he didn’t know what it would be like to have them. His mom, Judy, got him his first prostheses when he was 18 months old. As he got older, nothing seemed to stop him – he climbed trees, chased balls, he was always active, despite his disability. He quickly realized in elementary school, however, that kids can be cruel. In high school, it got worse. It was hard to fit in. The only place he felt comfortable was on the wrestling team, a sport in which he excelled. His Christian faith was tested, he felt God had abandoned him. When, the new minister at Friendship Chapel in Flanders, the Rev. Joe Walser, came into Tim’s life he recognized that Tim “was wrestling with his faith.” Rev. Walser helped Tim turn his life around. Eventually, Tim realized that he could use his lack of legs as a faith testimony. “Now,” he says, “I see this as a blessing from the Lord.” He graduates from Trinity College in the Spring of 2012 and is not sure where life will take him, but he is sure that it will be in the ministry. He

does know that he will be sharing his story to inspire others.

He is Board Certifications include Sleep Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care Medicine. Not only has Dr. Averill completed an impressive amount of training in the medical field, he also received his Juris Doctor Degree from Stetson School of Law. Rose Averill explains her role of C.E.O. as being the “Chief Everything Officer”. Her personal touch can be seen though the facility that she designed and decorated to be warm and comforting. It is evident that she succeeded by patients who have made comments such as, Symone who stated , “This place is beautiful and serene. Thank you for this lovely place”, and Stephen described it as ,”peaceful and comforting”. These are not words that are usually used to describe a medical facility. Rose handles all the business aspects of the practice and in recognition of her accomplishments in that regard,

for the past three years the Tampa Bay Business Journal has honored her as a Business Woman of the Year finalist , and she was also named a 2011 Business Woman Extraordinaire by Business Leader media. The couple agrees that the health industry is truly a service industry focusing on helping others achieve optimal health in a compassionate, professional manner. Many patients have expressed their thankfulness to the Averill’s approach, such as Patricia who commented, “I had a kind and reassuring experience there. Dr Averill took excellent care of me.” Judy said her and her husband , “ enjoy our visits here. It doesn’t feel like a doctor’s office. We never dread going. We appreciate the level of care and caring that makes us glad that we chose St Francis. We are confident that we are receiving excellent care by an excellent staff.” Elizabeth expressed that she felt,” Dr Averill is one of the kindest most compassionate doctors that I have ever encountered. He always greets us with a smile. He really cares and he takes time with his patients.” Ted took the time to send a thank you note in which he exclaimed his gratitude to, “Dr Averill and all the won-

Their comprehensive approach to allergy care can include immunotherapy which can often reduce the response to allergic triggers and modify the natural course of allergies. Through a variety of testing options Dr Averill can accurately assess each patient’s needs to determine the best course of treatment. One patient, Margaret, who suffered from allergies for years noted, “ because of the allergy shots and the amazing staff, because I finally was treated properly and the testing and formula was exact, I am finally able to live the quality of life that I took for granted many years ago. This was an answer to prayer.” A wide range of allergy and asthma resources can be found at St. Francis’ website in the allergy and asthma resource center. They wanted to create a place where unabashedly the mind, body and spirit are recognized and honored. Frank and Rose are Christians, a Catholic couple who have been professed Franciscans for over a decade, and incorporate the St. Francis prayer into their everyday lives and business practices. Dr. Averill says, “St. Francis’ main message was joy.” Both Dr. Averill and Rose incorporate the belief that in helping others, true joy and satisfaction can be obtained in life. In line with their philosophy to help others, over a decade ago, the Averills founded a non-profit charity, “Footprints Ministry,” dedicated to providing new shoes to homeless and needy children. For her volunteer work, Rose has been featured in national magazines and was recognized as the 2010 Volunteer Hero of the Year by Bay News 9 and Outback Steakhouse. Dr Averill receives referrals from other physicians for his medical specialty services, and people can feel free call St Francis Sleep, Allergy and Lung Institute directly to schedule an appointment.
