Salon Solei

for a Look You Will Love By Lenay Ruhl

Jessica Wilbanks and Kerry Smith, formerly of a Redken salon in Clearwater, are two of Salon Solei’s newest, talented team members.

Salon Solei has been offering professional hair services to East Lake, Palm Harbor, and the surrounding area since 2003 and they look forward to celebrating 11 years in the business. Still under the same ownership, Marissa Insolia continues to offer exceptional service with a growing staff of talented colorists, nail techs and stylists. Her salon is unique in that it currently has three Redken certified colorists, a rarity in the industry. Kim Stipanovich, Beth Valachovic and

Kerry Smith have all been certified through Redken after extensive training and testing in New York City. Salon Solei offers hair care, nail care and waxing. “We take care of the whole family,” said Marissa. They even offer a student discount. She reflects back to her almost 11 years at her location and the long-term relationships she builds with her clients. “I’ve watched little kids grow up into adults over the last 11 years. Time really does fly,” said Marissa. Her longest staff member, Marie Aponte, has been a nail tech and front desk coordinator at

Salon Solei for 10 years. As a long lasting member of the community, the salon continually looks for ways to give back. Salon Solei has been a participant of Locks of Love since day one and Marissa said they donate pretty regularly. She added, “It’s the least we could do.” The salon will be sponsoring a little league team again this year, continuing a tradition Marissa’s brother Ryan started. He ran her salon while she took time off to start her family and he was a little league coach. This year, Salon Solei held a Makeover contest. People submitted stories about people who needed a makeover the most and the staff picked one lucky winner. “I wanted to do something nice for someone who See “Salon Solei” on page 38.

Sun Country Cleaners Scores a Touchdown with an ELHS Football Mom Jennifer Vazquez experienced what every parent of a high school athlete fears. Her son Noah, who plays football for East Lake High School, had to be carried off the field on a stretcher. Noah is okay now, and his mom wrote Neighborhood News & Lifestyles to tell us how impressed she was with Sun Country Cleaners. The following is Jennifer’s account. “On November 29th Noah was injured during a playoff game and was taken to the ER by ambulance from the field,” says Jennifer. “Of course we were all distraught and the last thing we were worried about was the fact that they had to cut Noah's jersey #8 from him. Thank God he was able to go home early the next morning and is recovering from a cervical sprain. In all of the commotion we were given Noah's belongings on the way out. Not until I went to throw his clothes in the laundry did I realize his jersey was shredded to pieces. I washed it

anyway. The next day when Noah went to grab a piece of clothing from our laundry room he came out with his shredded jersey. Especially as a senior, this meant a lot to him. On Monday, something brought me to Sun Country Cleaners on Ridgemoor Blvd. I have lived in Lansbrook for 11 years and have never been in once. As I approached the counter I spotted the seamstress hard at work on her sewing machine, I brought the shredded jersey over. She took one look at it and said she would do her best, I begged her to have it ready by that Friday for the next playoff game; even though Noah couldn't play I wanted him to have his jersey. She told me she would try her best. I got a call the very next day to pick up the jersey. I wasn't sure what to expect. What I found when I picked up the jersey was amazing. If you didn't know the story of the jersey you would never know it was cut to pieces the week before. Grace is a true angel, and she would not let me pay a penny for the repair, she just wanted Noah to have his jer-

I will be a frequent customer from now on at Sun Country Cleaners, and I will never forget the gesture made by a stranger who made my son happy to have his jersey back.” New Year…New Expanded Hours at East Lake Library! The Couples Massage Suite

Lotus Yoga has a class right for you

Myofascia Release, Pre-Natal Massage, Therapeutic Massage/Neuromuscular, Reiki Energy, Healing Touch, Rejuv Swedish Massage and Bhakti Massage. Try a Thai Massage to open and tone the systems within your body. Thai massage is very similar to doing yoga on a table; the massage therapist will stretch you and apply pressure with gentle rocking and rhythmic compressions and guided breathing to give you a full stretch massage. The Four-Hand massage originates from ancient Ayurveda and involves two therapists working in harmony. Couples massages are the perfect gift to connect with a loved one in your life, whether it is your significant other, friend or special family member. The Couples Massage room, Harmony, is the perfect atmosphere to relax and enjoy a full-body treatment that is intensely relaxing and rejuvenating. One of my favorite massage treatments is the Hot Stone Massage; a relaxing and restorative treatment that utilizes warm river stones and hands to penetrate deep into the muscle. The heat from the stones radiates throughout specific parts of the body to relieve tension and stress trapped inside the muscles. Ceci says, “While we provide a service, we strive to empower guests on their personal path to healing. Massage should not be seen as a luxury but as an investment in their well-

ness. I am so grateful for my team of wonderful massage therapists. Thank you to Bill, Donna, Joyce, Cenia, Carmen, Judy and Christy for their excellence in commitment to Massage of Trinity.” Massage is an excellent alternative to treat pain for many people. Instead of opting towards pharmaceuticals, visit Massage of Trinity for your therapeutic restorative session, whether for deep muscle aches, sports strains or just a moment to de-stress. You will find that Massage of Trinity’s therapists’ attention to detail and exceptional skill will benefit you in mind, body and spirit. Yoga, Acupuncture & Skin Care Too! Massage of Trinity has recently expanded in space and services, adding an additional 992 square feet and now offering yoga with Lotus Yoga, as well as Acupuncture and a Full Skin Care Bar. With six RYT certified instructors in yoga and more than twenty 75-minute classes a week to choose from, the Lotus Yoga center at Massage of Trinity has classes for everyone. Whether you are in search of Power Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Tai Chi, Gentle Stretch Yoga or Adult Core Ballet, the Lotus Yoga center is intimate, friendly and tuned to providing you with a relaxing atmosphere to reconnect. Ceci says, “We wanted to incorpo-

rate Yoga, Skin Care and Acupuncture in order to give our guests well-balanced options for their journey to health. Our classes are for all levels and all of our instructors have a lot of experience in different forms of Yoga, Tai Chi and Adult Core Ballet. Tai Chi is really taking off – it is a very progressive type of class because you build your knowledge and strength with each class you take. Our Adult Core Ballet focuses on core strength because as adults age, we lose our balance and flexibility. Each class is go at your own pace and we never want you to do anything that feels uncomfortable. We coach you to do what you can, while receiving the full benefits from each pose. We also hold a weekly Metta Meditation guided by Bhante Dhammawansha (Buddhist Monk) on Monday evenings.” Ceci thanks all of her instructors for their cohesive goals in helping people find their balance. Try out Gentle Yoga with Jerri, Stretch Yoga with Alana, Hatha Yoga with Natalie, Hatha Flow Yoga with Jeanine, Restorative Yoga with Audrey, Tai Chi with Steve, Power Yoga with Antonio or Adult Core Ballet with Florence. Lotus Yoga welcomes you to come find the class that best suits you. Yoga instructor and Reiki Master, Jerri, says, “We have all these great therapists here. The yoga instructors and massage therapists are all very diversified. We all have a common goal and purpose here, which is educating our guests in finding wholeness in health through balance, energy and consciousness.” The Acupuncture at the Massage of Trinity facility is very traditional and authentic. Educated in China, Dr. Yee Shing Lee works with guests to find alternative ways to heal them individually and even takes the extra step in preparing herbs to continue treatment at home.

The Skin Care suite offers guests natural skin care treatments and facials, professional makeup and botanical skin care lines, as well as waxing services. Estheticians Ning and Kathy work one-on-one with guests to help them build a personalized skin care routine. Beauty Therapy by Ning offers botanical products that have no artificial ingredients. Everything is made in America and chosen based on your skin type. At the Skin Care suite, you can receive an all-natural facial, purchase at home products for healthy hair and skin and find the perfect mineral makeup for your skin. The vibe at Massage of Trinity and Lotus Yoga is completely relaxing, serene and inviting offering an escape where you can find harmony and balance within yourself. New Name Contest: In light of the recent expansion, Ceci and her team are looking for the perfect name to represent the services of Lotus Yoga and Massage of Trinity. Landon Outreach Foundation’s 2nd Annual Feeding the Hungry A Happy Occasion for All! Neighboring families and individuals in need gathered together to enjoy a delicious hot meal on Monday, December 16 outside of The Good Samaritan Health Clinic, located at 5334 Aspen Street in New Port Richey. It was a beautiful Florida wintery day – sunny and just chilly enough for a lightweight jacket. Individual volunteers as well as volunteers from many local businesses and nonprofits, including The Good Samaritan Health Clinic, worked to make the Feeding the Hungry picnic a festive, holiday party. This special annual event was possible due to the fundraising efforts of the Landon Outreach Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit, and local supporting businesses including Landon Plastic Surgery and The Spa Boutique, Grille 54, Christo’s Family Restaurant and Pit Boss BBQ. Santa was there spreading Christmas cheer and in addition to a nutritious, tasty hot meal and dessert, those in need were given gift bags with blan-

18

kets, warm socks, toothbrushes and toothpaste. Many enjoyed the food and the camaraderie! Charles came out for a hot meal and said, “I am having a wonderful time at this event. It is a Godsend for everyone. It seems to be helping a lot of people. We all need help and it is great to see such a wonderful, giving spirit.” His friend Rick wanted to know, “Who made this? It hit the spot!” And Pat, who had joined them, said of The Good Samaritan Health Clinic, “This is a good place. They’ve been helping people for a long time.” Eleven-year-old Anecia and her brother Trevion, nine, enjoyed the day and Anecia even snuggled up to a lifesized, stuffed Frosty the Snowman for

a warm snuggle. Bruce and Cheryl Landon of the Landon Outreach Foundation would like to thank the many volunteers who came out to help make this day special for as many as possible. Bruce and Cheryl were assisted by their children Alex and Ben, as well as many of their staff. All of the volunteers enjoyed the chance to do something positive to help those in our community. Terry Kohler of Visiting Angels was one of those who wanted to help. Terry said, “New Port Richey is such a great city and I am glad to be out volunteering and helping to care for

those in our city.” Beverly Harris truly enjoyed the day of volunteering, said, “It is an awesome blessing that Dr. Landon and his staff were able to provide for so many people. This is what Christmas is about.” Dr. Bruce Landon is hopeful that the Feeding the Hungry event will continue to reach even more people in the future. He is happy that the 2013 event reached more people that the first Feeding the Hungry held in 2012. “This year we decided to hold it earlier in the day and take it out to an

area where there is a more immediate need. The Good Samaritan Health Clinic was kind enough to let us set up on their property and even passed out fliers to local clinics to help us reach as many in need as possible.” Mother and daughter Loida and Kimberly, 27, worked side-by-side along with Barbara and Carol at the sweets station. Kimberly said, “We’ve wanted to help out locally here in New Port Richey. This is a good cause and a good way to start the holidays. People for Haiti founder Guiga was there with her daughter and is ex-

cited that Landon Outreach Foundation will be part of the next trip to Haiti. Guiga said, “All four of the Landons are going to be able to go and we are very excited to have them join us on our upcoming mission.” The Event Factory’s photographer Eydie Gonzalez said, “I’m happy to be here to capture the event!” Lynn Hazard of Regional Networking Group saw the day as a great opportunity to meet like-minded people. Lynn said, “I have always volunteered but this is the first time I’ve had the opportunity to volunteer to feed

the hungry. I enjoy talking to everyone; some I was able to encourage and some I was even able to help with employment opportunities.” As the day wound down, nothing went to waste. Cheryl Landon arranged to send food to the Rap House, Catholic charities and a homeless shelter. Recent Landon Outreach Foundation events have raised funds for battered women’s shelters and the

Alex, Dr. Bruce, Cheryl & Ben Children’s Cancer Center, as well as providing a holiday party for the children there. Feeding the Hungry was a great way for the Landon Outreach Foundation to end its year. Please visit www.LandonOutreach.com to find information on how you can volunteer, donate or participate in exciting opportunities to give back in 2014.

This Year Get in the Zone at Zone Fitness Club By Julie Kanehl Introducing the brand new, first of its kind, Zone Fitness Club, located at 1252 Seven Springs Boulevard where everyone gets results. Why? I’ll cut to the chase because I have a feeling that you think you’ve heard it all before. Guess what, this is different. This is awesome. This is science! This is a fitness club for everyone, whether you’ve never worked out before, or you’ve been an athlete your whole life. So you’re thinking, how can one fitness club claim to be for everyone and yet give everyone unique results? That’s the science of Zone Fitness. Then, what if I mentioned that there aren’t any contracts to sign? No long-term obligations? Okay, so you’d be interested, right? What if I told you that the cost was only $15 per month? I’ll tell you what I’m doing, I’m signing up! I’m going to preface this story by saying that for years I was one of those people who wrote “LOSE WEIGHT” and “GET IN SHAPE” at the top of my New Year’s Resolution list. I talked

22

about it. I complained about it. I suffered. I had given up. I was never going to be “cute” or “in shape” again. Those days were “over” for me. I’d hear myself saying, “If you see me running, you better run too,” and I’d laugh louder than anyone around me so that I wouldn’t show my embarrassment. Then I’d say, “Oh, I’d work out, but my back, neck etc…” I even had a sign in my kitchen that said, “There’s a skinny girl inside me, but I can usually shut her up with cookies!” Then a very close friend said something to me that really changed my life. She said, “When you’re ready, you will. That’s it. You have to decide to make a change. It won’t be overnight, but it will happen if you decide to value yourself as much as you value everyone else.” She was right. That was almost 50 pounds ago. Right now, I’m in better shape than I was when I got married. Was it easy? No. Was it instant? No. It took time and dedication, and a little sacrifice, but I did it. Guess what? If I can do it, you can do it! And with a place like

Zone Fitness Club in your arsenal, you are literally guaranteed results. So, am I done? No way, you know what I’m going to do next? I’m joining Zone Fitness Club! I’ll tell you why: It’s affordable, it’s convenient, and most importantly, it’s the first club of its kind to put me into a personal zone of fitness. I’m not talking about just chatting about my body mass index with some sweaty guy in a tank top and filling out a survey. I’m talking about a fitness club that offers the ability to monitor my heart rate, my fitness levels and to even help me challenge myself within my zone, so that I’m not comparing my workout with anyone else’s! Why?

Their zone is going to be completely different from mine, and when I’m in my zone, I know I’ll be seeing results, because it means that my body will be working out at just the right amount for my own goals. That means I won’t burn out, and I won’t give up! That’s why they can guarantee results. Your zone is for you and for you only, and the club is designed to facilitate you at every level. If you want to work independently-you’ve got it. If you love the motivation that a class gives you, you can do that! So you, yes - you, will lose weight, get in better shape, flatten that tummy, tone those arms and feel better inside and out when you join the new Zone Fitness Club.

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

The Details: The Zone Fitness Club has over 42 pieces of state-of-the-art cardio equipment, as well as free weights, TRX Training equipment, abdominal equipment, and the club functions a lot like a cross-fit circuit. There’s really something for everyone, and you don’t have to live there to see results! Zone Fitness Club is privately owned and operated, and staffed by people who are specifically trained in fitness, so that everyone on the staff can help you achieve your goals and offer a level of service that is unparalleled. Zone Fitness Club also offers “executive style” locker rooms, which means, you can feel comfortable hitting the showers after your workout and getting back to work, school, and life! The Science of the Zone The President and Founder of Zone Fitness Clubs is Tim Forrest, who has 20 years of experience in the fitness industry, and who until recently was the VP of Sales and Operations for a company that ran 18 clubs in 7 states. His experience has helped him to see where the fitness industry is trending and to custom-create a club

of his own that would blend the newest workout technology with the customer service standard that he feels makes or breaks any workout facility. He says, “Our mission is to make it affordable and to make it easy so you can get fit and you won’t quit.” He adds, “I wanted an affordable membership, a motivating environment and a way to connect to my members. The Zone Fitness Club knocks down those walls of age, weight and gender, because everyone is working at the right zone for their body.” Forrest believes that when you put every member into their own personal zone, it creates an enjoyable, less intimidating environment. It takes away that competitive environment that keeps people away from the gym. If you are not afraid of the gym, but feel like you’ve been there, done that, you’re going to love this, because it helps you to regain momentum and capture exactly the kind of activity that your body needs to start making progress again. As you get more fit, your zone changes! He says, “The reason why people stop losing weight when they exercise is because they plateau. Our heart-rate

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

training will help you get over that hump.” Here’s how it works: Members purchase a comfortable MYZONE Physical Activity Belt that, when worn, monitors physical activity done both in and out of the club and stores that information. Members can log in and see their activity from anywhere, and can participate in challenges based on their physical activity, measure results and achieve goals. This way, your fitness goals are completely your own, because the technology is a part of the workout, giving you the chance to monitor your heart’s rate and intensity. This makes your workout safe, and to be honest, it’s exciting to see your results. This is the science part! This heart-rate, training based fitness program helps your body to work smarter, instead of harder so you won’t burn out, you’ll just burn fat! Forrest explains, “When your heart rate is in its zone for a period of 12-20 minutes, your body will work like a furnace, which means that even when you are done working out, your body will still be burning fat.” Let me be clear, you don’t have to be out of your comfort zone to get into the zone. Your workout will be completely customized to you by a certified fitness trainer. Then, when you sign up for one of their Zone Fitness Classes, which are classes made up 10-12 people, you’ll get the chance to work out in a group setting while still meeting your own personal goals. This can be fun and motivating, but most importantly, the classes help you get and stay in your zone. Forrest is so sure that you’ll see results that it’s guaranteed. He says, “If you work out 3 times a week for a month performing the ZONE Workout and you don’t see results, I’ll refund you the whole cost for your sessions for the month. I’m so confi-

dent that our program will change your body.” Now is the science part required? No! If you’re just looking for a beautiful new club to join, where the equipment is brand-spanking new, the membership fees are incredibly affordable and it’s run by experienced staff, then head on over! The MYZONE belt is completely optional! There’s More? Affordable? Check! Fun? Check! No Contract? Check! Kid Zone? CHECK! If you’re a busy parent like me, you’ll be so happy to learn that Zone Fitness Club offers a Kid Zone that helps keep kids in their own creativity zone while you’re getting in your workout! You do not have to choose between being fit and being a good parent! These kid-focused, hands-on activities will make your kids actually want to go the Zone Fitness Club with you! When you compare clubs that offer childcare in the area, their monthly fees are nearly 3 times more expensive, and they don’t offer the technology, the science, or the guarantee, so what are you waiting for? Go check out the brand new Zone Fitness Club and make this year YOUR year. You can do it, Zone Fitness Club will show you how. Zone Fitness Club is located in the Chelsea Place Plaza at 1252 Seven Springs Blvd. in New Port Richey, just minutes away from Trinity, East Lake, Tarpon Springs and Odessa. Zone Fitness Club is open Mon.–Thurs., 5 a.m.–11 p.m.; 5 a.m.–10 p.m. on Fri.; 8 a.m.–8 p.m. on Sat.; and from 8 a.m.–7 p.m. on Sun. his father, who also is a custom woodworker. Originally from Boston, Nathan can remember sitting alongside his father in their garage, watching him work his magic on a piece of beautiful wood. “My dad has been a craftsman for forty years and he passed down his trade to me,” says Nathan. “He taught me everything he knew about woodworking and I developed a passion for it at a young age,” says Nathan. “My dad and I started work-

ing together in business when I was seventeen and we were in business for ten years together. I started my own company in 2007 with a small shop but I have recently been able to expand to a new location with over 4,500 square feet. All of my previous business has come from word of mouth and satisfied customer referrals.” When worked properly, the right kind of wood can be crafted into a beautiful and functional feature item

Rather than mass production, the NSM team focuses on carefully crafting each piece with highly attuned skill, attention to detail and artistic craftsmanship. Scubanauts International - “Education through Exploration!” By Katie Thomas Scubanauts International, a locally based non-profit organization for youth development strives to connect middle and high school aged students through collaborative marine research expeditions, exploration, scholastic achievement and wonder. Scubanauts acts as a leadership program and personal development gateway for students interested in marine life and science. Dedicated to enriching the lives of youth with education an exploration, Scubanauts and the youth whom immerse themselves in the program have bright futures ahead! Founded in 2001 by Captain David Olson of Palm Harbor, Scubanauts utilizes informal science education through underwater dive exploration. Captain David wanted to give students a chance to become involved in a program that honed in on diving skills, while building character through research and marine development. Captain Olson’s quest started in teaching recently certified scuba students to use scuba as an outlet for learning more about marine science and has now grown into a fabulously enriching way for parents to connect

30

with their children and work buddyto-buddy in making a difference in our coastal waterways. In the summer of 2001, Scubanauts were introduced to the Gulfstream Natural Gas Systems by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, allowing the team to make their first big impact in our oceans. Scubanauts were able to spend their first summer salvaging and relocating coral colonies, sponges and other bottom dwelling organisms that would be impacted by underwater pipeline construction. Since 2001, Scubanauts have been granted funds to continue their educational experience and tutelage working with Gulfstream Natural Gas Systems. The students plan the dives themselves and work on collecting data parameters, habitat surveys, fish counts and focus on underwater photography and video skills. Scubanauts scuba missions comply with the American Academy of Underwater Sciences to ensure safe dive practice for all Scubanauts. The Scubanauts’ Diving Control Board is comprised of graduate students, volunteers and involved parents that are all diving safety experts in order to ensure safe and properly managed dives.

NASA awarded Scubanauts with a $341,000 federal grant in 2007 to facilitate continued research, promote direct interaction with scientists and establish new chapters. Scubanauts currently has four chapters located in Tarpon Springs, St. Petersburg, Key West and most recently Tampa. Scubanauts International is working to increase opportunities for young divers and avid science lovers by enlisting new members, recruiting the best

mentors and establishing new chapters nationwide and internationally. Scubanaut teens (12-18) are taught leadership skills, self-development and personal challenge within the program. Jim Cassick of Scubanauts says, “This is character building through marine science and scuba diving. We offer our kids hands-on experience that they cannot get anywhere else. Scubanauts really helps us stay connected with our teens and gives us

a healthy outlet to surround them with positive role models, adults and kids alike.” Jim and his son Colin started Scubanauts in 2008 and have embraced the family oriented program full on. Jim says, “We become a team and also family. Our vacations now aren’t just for luxury, we have a mission to take on challenges, set goals and make an impact on our environment and the lives of our kids.” Recently, Scubanauts has paired with the Wounded Veterans Challenge (http://goo.gl/VFp8ly), in which wounded combat soldiers that are missing limbs work together with Scubanauts to replant coral reefs and improve their lives with therapeutic

outdoor challenges. Scubanauts usually partner with wounded veterans a couple times a year; trips can include anything from diving to hiking in survival challenge situations. The Foisey family from Scubanaut International’s Tarpon Springs chapter are thrilled with the Scubanauts program. As a family, the Foisey’s experience with Scubanauts has been unique, thrilling, educational and a great way to create a lasting bond with memories that last a lifetime. “We absolutely love and thoroughly enjoy the Scubanauts program,” says Cyndi Foisey. “We joined with our three kids in 2011 and our youngest will be joining as soon as she is able. Scubanauts International is

a great character building and networking program for students who have a passion for diving and even instills a love for learning in our kids’ lives. We have gone to Washington D.C. twice with Scubanauts for C.H.O.W. (Capitol Hill Ocean Week), which gave the kids unique opportunities to talk with professors and research scientists, as well as meet with Senators and higher-ups involved with ocean research and marine education. We have gone to the Keys to develop coral reefs and it is amazing to give our kids an experience that they wouldn’t necessarily have in other youth programs. The leadership skills they are building are priceless and we are really im-

pressed with all the teenagers involved in the program. Scubanauts allows students and families to spend their time doing something that they love, while making a positive impact on the marine environment. We love the Scubanauts program and all it has done for us as a family. My husband Paul and I want to enrich the lives of our kids and Scubanaut’s has given us the right outlet that we all enjoy.” The importance in helping your children find positive role models and friends is the key to success during the impressionable middle school and high school years. Scubanauts provides an outlet for kids and parents to have fun, while learning and making a positive long-lasting impact on the marine environment. With guided learning through discovery; Scubanauts is able to provide activities focusing on leadership, community service, social interaction, fitness, environmental science and citizenship. Scubanauts may be just the program for you to provide development building, character shaping and a fun outlet based in a learning environment! New Memberships Take Off at Wentworth and Crescent Oaks Over 40 new Golf, Social and Seasonal Golf Members have taken advantage of Ace Golf’s new membership rates that went into effect on November 1. Once private Wentworth Golf Club and Crescent Oaks Country Club are now joined together by local owner Ace Golf. New rates are less than half what they were just five years ago and offer an exciting array of new benefits. Ace Golf’s new rates drop in the slower “off-season” from May to October so average year-round rates are much lower than other clubs. The new rates offer privileges at both Wentworth and Crescent Oaks Golf Clubs and vary from $79$154/month single to $114194/month family. The Ace Golf Membership offers unique benefits like walking privileges not offered at other courses, seasonal memberships, complimentary range balls, golf privileges at sister club Pebble Creek Golf Club, and two free guest passes every month to share the clubs with friends and business associates.

32

For those that don’t play golf, Social Memberships offer an even greater value – free when a monthly minimum is spent in the two club’s restaurants — $39/month single and $59/month family. For the month of January, the social membership is completely free to new members. Contact Russ Shafer, Membership Director, at (727) 942-4760 x21 to enjoy this free offer. With over 150 Social Members alone at Crescent Oaks Country Club, there are plenty of people to meet and things to do. Following the Oktoberfest, Halloween, and Thanksgiving Day events, the club had the December 6 Rock and Roll Christmas Show with music from Johnnie M and the annual Member Holiday Cocktail and Dinner Party December 13 with Kaleidoscope performing. Kids and Adults enjoyed the Brunch with Santa Claus on December 15 followed by a kids BuildYour-Own Ginger Bread House party. The New Year’s Eve Extravaganza featured Fine Dining in the Grand Oaks Ballroom followed by entertainment from the Lucky Stones Band.

Facilities and Courses at both Wentworth and Crescent Oaks have undergone complete renovation over the last three years. Wentworth features new greens and the Mulligans Irish Pub opened just two years ago. Its English-manor clubhouse offers elegant appointments and is a popular wedding location open to all. Crescent Oaks also has new greens, a beautiful new ballroom and event pavilion, a new exercise room and clay-court tennis facilities. Wentworth and Crescent Oaks Golf Clubs are conveniently located off of East Lake Road near Keystone Road. Crescent Oaks Country Club (crescentoaksgolf.com) is 1/2 mile north of Keystone at 3300 Crescent Oaks Boulevard in Tarpon Springs. The club opened in 1989 on 198 acres abutting the Brooker Creek Preserve and features a par-72 golf course, driving range, with eight tennis courts (six clay), large banquet center and a new fitness center. In its initial year, 2012, the academy tested over 200 students. “The industry certifications are an excellent opportunity for students to get their foot in the door of a job while they are still in high school. These exams are the same that professionals who have been working in the field are taking,” said Lynn Fetters, business department chair at East Lake High School. “We want to provide employers a pool of

qualified workers through these industry certifications and provide our students’ opportunities to jump start their careers.” The academy also offers extracurricular opportunities for students. FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) is the largest business student organization in the world. This year, the East Lake chapter has 60 members. Students in the organization compete in a variety of over 65 different categories ranging from Digital Design to Business Law to Sports Management.

Last year was the first year the East Lake High School FBLA chapter had been active in nearly 20 years. Even so, the chapter took two ELHS juniors, Anthony Canalungo and Johathan Grasso, all the way to the national competition in Anaheim, CA to compete in the Banking and Financial Systems. The students earned fourth place in the country. The ELHS chapter is looking for a repeat performance at this year’s FBLA competition along with adding a few more students to that list.

Our Community, Our Home, Our Businesses By Matt Selby Our magazine has been promoting shopping local long before it was the cool thing to do; before “Small Business Saturday” – which American Express promotes like crazy for one day per year. In fact, it's been every day since 1994 when my dad Tim Selby and his former brother in-law Gary purchased an 11-month-old publication, consisting mostly of articles about national news, on whitewoven paper and turned it into the original New Tampa Neighborhood News. People learn enough about what is going on in the Nation by turning on the TV. But what is going on in our hometown? Where do we find out about that? Taking this into account, the theme of the magazine was changed. Immediately tossing the canned information out the window, Tim and Gary focused their attention on what was going on in the local community. Twenty years later, Gary still has the New Tampa Neighborhood News, as

36

well as another in Wesley Chapel, and my parents Tim and Doreen Selby, who have since parted ways with Gary, expanded Neighborhood News & Lifestyles into Trinity, East Lake, Odessa/Lutz/Land O' Lakes and Westchase, with four publications reaching over 70,000 mailboxes monthly. In 2013, my wife Alexis and I expanded the Neighborhood News and Lifestyles into the Carrollwood area, extending the reach of the Neighborhood New & Lifestyles name to another 14,000 homes and businesses. We hope you’ve enjoyed reading about what is going on here in our community over the past year and have had a chance to frequent the local businesses we help promote. We really want to thank all of you who have supported small businesses in 2013 and we hope you will continue to support them in 2014. It makes all the difference in the world to this community. By shopping at small businesses it keeps almost 75% of the money right here in our own econ-

omy. If we want our neighborhoods and surrounding Tampa Bay areas to thrive it’s our responsibility to support our neighbors. The following are just a few of the comments some of the local business owners had about their experience with us this past year. “We started running out of food at 10 in the morning,” says Bruce from Hattie's Cafe and Beanery. “We've never seen such a rush! We’ve been in the Tampa Tribune and that got us a little bump, we had a 2 and 1/2 minute spotlight on Fox News – that barely got us anything. In my 50 years plus of being in this industry, I’ve never felt such a push from local advertising in my life! People come in here and tell me why they came in and they say they came in because they saw us in “their” Neighborhood News magazine. They know it’s about their community and they love it!” “Everything about the magazine, I absolutely love! It actually brought me around 200 new customers after the article came out!”__Angel from New Beijing restaurant.

Lea from Great Clips says, “This publication is so great for our community businesses and has certainly been outstanding for mine. I have advertised for the past several months in the magazine with great results. Alexis did a front-page article on my Great Clips salon at Fletcher and Dale Mabry in the November issue of the magazine. The feedback we received was amazing! Friends, neighbors and customers get this magazine and mentioned it to me and to our staff as well. I would highly recommend putting an ad in the Neighborhood News & Lifestyles magazine. These ads are reasonably priced and provide great exposure for your local business. And, Alexis and Matt are terrific to work with.” Robert from Twinz Big City Hotdogs says, “Not only did we have our best Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday ever since being open, but we had our best days by at least 30%. I admit I was skeptical at first, but I am a true believer in what you guys can do now. By far the best thing we've ever done! We got to meet so many

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

great people in this community that came in directly because of what you wrote about us and people were telling us they would be back before they even tried the food. They were so sure they were going to love it based off what you wrote about us. After tasting the food, people were telling us it’s the best burger or the best hot dog or the best wings they have ever had and they didn't even know we were here! Thank you!” Hearing these kind of success stories gives me chills because I'm a small business owner too; we are not owned by some huge corporate media con-

glomerate. My wife and I are locals who know this area – who love this area – and we know how much work goes into making a business successful. You have to believe in what you are doing; you have to live it and you have to love it. People can tell which businesses operate simply to make a buck and which truly have a passion for what they offer. The business owner who understands that it’s his or her name on the line and their reputation is all they have – that's who we strive to promote. The small business owner that just needs people to know his story to be successful!

“Salon Solei” Continued from page 1 deserves it and who might not do it for herself,” said Marissa. Their lucky winner was Melissa Williams, mother of five young children. Her color was done by Kerry; Barry McGarva cut, styled and did her waxing. Jen applied her makeup and Marissa did her nails and took photos of her. Along with community outreach, the salon also offers a Loyalty Club. They use computer tracking to count points, which client club members earn with every purchase in the salon. The saved points can be used as discounts on future purchases. This is good on all services and product. Membership is complimentary for those who register. If you refer someone to the salon you get a 20 percent off coupon emailed to you. You can stack coupons so if you send them five new customers you can receive a free service – that is a 100 percent discount! Staying up-to-date on new products and keeping things fresh is important at Salon Solei. The salon recently started using Essie Gel, which is similar to Shellac, except it is a brand new

Essie product with a fresh set of colors. The brand uses LED rather than a UV light. UV light causes apprehensions of skin damage because of exposure, so LED can be a better option for concerned clients. Also, the LED light cures quicker. It has no harmful rays and it takes a quarter of the time to cure than Shellac does. Salon Solei also now offers Redken’s new sulfate-free line of hair products called Color Extend Magnetics. The next generation hair color care technology utilizes Redken’s exclusive IPN and Charge-Attract Complex to deliver charged amino-ions that are attracted to the hair fiber to help seal in color. Color Extend Magnetics products make sure hair color is secured with maximum vibrancy and alluring shine. The line includes shampoo, conditioner and hair mask. With the salon being a notable account for Redken, the brand offers them support with continuing education courses throughout the year. The salon staff recently went to a show in Orlando called Centricity. While they were there, they had the opportunity to meet Sam Villa who Marissa describes as a “big deal” in the hair world. One day, driving past a new shopping center being built, she called her dad and told him about this location she had found that would be perfect for a salon. Her dad, who always had a dream of owning his own business but never took the leap from his full-time job, helped her start the salon. Marissa’s favorite part of her job is getting to interact with all kinds of people on a regular basis. Seated at her nail tech station towards the front of the salon, a smiling customer approached her. Client Connie Breien is loving her new style! She laughed saying how someone told her that her hair looked great. Her response was, “What can you expect? It’s Salon Solei.” She held out a hand decorated with freshly painted red nails, impressed with the new Essie Gel. “It’s nice to see people walk out feeling good about themselves, feeling confident,” said Marissa. With 10 years behind her, Marissa looks forward to her future with Salon Solei. She is currently looking to expand her growing team, and is eager to continue providing locals with a “true guest experience.”
