On Valentines Day, Andy, along with other members of the chorus will be performing Singing Valentines as a fundraiser for the Heralds, a 501c3 organization. Here’s how it works: A barbershop quartet dressed in tuxedos will show up unannounced at the “sweetheart’s” workplace or home (as designated by the purchaser), and sing two songs: “Let me call you Sweetheart”, and “Heart of My Heart”. The sweetheart is then presented with a personalized Valentines Day card, and a

A Morning at Middle School: Fifth Graders Preview Sixth Grade at Corbett Prep Fifth graders had an opportunity to immerse themselves in sixthgrade life during a morning at Middle School, crossing Orange Grove Drive to meet their future teachers and see for themselves what awaits them in Corbett Prep classrooms next year. Every year, Corbett Preparatory School of IDS invites its current fifth graders to preview Middle School life and its academics by having them spend time in the core classes in which they will enroll the following year. It is an interactive experience designed to assist in the transition from the East to the West Side of campus. Offered each fall, the orientation helps students learn about the many options available in Middle School and answers questions about what to expect. Parents attend their own orientation separately as guests at an open house. Middle School teachers planned mini-lessons for the student groups, appealing to multiple learning styles with brain-based activities. Everyone donned goggles in science for an investigation lab where

gave fifth graders a chance to hear directly from students who had been in their shoes. Sixth graders wrote letters packed with words of wisdom, answering many of the questions they had when they started Middle School. They also shared electives they love, what it’s like to have a locker, how they manage their time and the ways they stay organized. “It is awesome being a student in Middle School at Corbett Prep, with all of the helpful teachers and friends,” one sixth-grade girl wrote. “They will ensure you have a great year.” Corbett Prep’s Middle School balances a rigorous academic environment with a caring learning community. Highly trained teachers provide a strong support network and continue the personalized learning experience that begins with PreK3, preparing students to soar in whatever high school they choose. The sixth-grade preview energized many of the students about the upcoming year. “I can’t wait for all the classes I’m going to take,” Kyle Fanelli said. Landon Outreach Foundation, Inc. By Alexis Selby Living in Tampa Bay, chances are you have heard of the Dr. Landon, and it’s not just because of his extraordinary work as a plastic surgeon. I’m sure it is also, in part, due to his and Cheryl’s continuous dedication and support to helping those in need, both locally and throughout the World. Through their Landon Outreach Foundation, the Landons have helped thousands upon thousands of underprivileged individuals and families, whether it be from their local fundraisers and events, or their yearly mission trips. The Landons recently sponsored two events this past month, one to benefit the Children’s Cancer Center of Tampa and the other, which benefitted the Salvation Army Domestic Violence Shelter. Cheryl is also currently working on giving toys to some

of the kids in the Pasco County School System that are in need. “Our goal is help those who are less fortunate than us,” says Cheryl. “It doesn’t matter who it is, we try to help everyone we can.” In addition to their fundraising events, every time that someone books a surgery, the deposit for the surgery, as well as the consultation fee, goes towards the Landon Outreach Foundation. This benefits both the patients and the community, as patients can use this $295, which they would’ve had to pay anyways, as a tax deduction, and the money goes towards helping out underprivileged in the community. Want to Keep Your New Year’s Resolution? Keep it Simple! 15th! If you’re serious about a resolution this year, give yourself a reasonable timeframe in which to complete it! Instead of pledging to lose a huge amount of weight, set smaller goals, with smaller rewards! For example, instead of saying, “If I lose 50 pounds, I’ll book a trip to Jamaica.” Say, “If I lose 10 pounds, I’ll treat myself to a girl’s night out or a round of golf!” People who set smaller, short-term goals are more likely to achieve their larger goal down the road.

By Julie Kanehl A new year is a beautiful gift, a blank slate, a whole new beginning! It’s no wonder that people all over the world jump at the fact to celebrate and make the next year even better by pledging to make changes. New Year’s resolutions aren’t a modern phenomenon, in fact, the Babylonians made promises at the beginning of each year to repay their debts and return anything that they’d borrowed the year before and had forgotten to return! What’s more, the ancient Romans, well, they started each year by making promises to their god, Janus, whose name is memorialized in time. You may know Janus as January. So, this January, what promises do you intend to make? Perhaps you’re one of the millions of people who pledge to lose weight, make more money, quit a bad habit or try something new. Mark Twain wrote, “Habit is habit, and not to be flung out of the window by any man, but coaxed

20

JANUARY 2015

Be Patient & Don’t Give Up! down the stairs a step at a time.” The same is true if you’re trying to start a new habit, rather than eliminating an old one! So whether you’re trying to make or break a habit, here are some helpful hints!

Set Small, Attainable Goals! First of all, resolutions are gener-

ally lofty goals. It’s not like your New Year’s resolution is to sit around and watch TV in your underwear, right? Of course not! So, when you’re making a big pledge, or a promise to change, it’s going to take some effort, and some time! Be patient, because your resolutions aren’t going to be attained by January

When you were little, and you didn’t know how to do a lot of stuff yet, people always said, “Don’t give up, keep practicing!” As adults, many of us seem to have forgotten this. We tend to give up too quickly, and we are far too hard on ourselves in the process. Believe in yourself, and most of all, try to hold on to the reason and the feeling that inspired you to make this resolution in the first place!

Carrollwood Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

So, if you’ve promised to give up smoking and you relapse, put them down, start fresh and give yourself a second chance! Every minute that you’re not smoking you’re becoming healthier. Take it from someone who never wanted to quit, had no intention of doing so, and thought I wouldn’t feel any different if I actually did. It’s been four years since I quit smoking, and trust me, if I can do it, you can do it! Some people believe that it takes just three weeks to make or break a habit, but I’ll tell you what works 100 percent of the time: Believing in yourself and never giving up!

the process! If you’re trying to break a habit, having a buddy or a friend on your side is instrumental. Sometimes you may need someone that you can just call when you’re feeling low, someone who knows your struggle and can talk you through it. Whether you’re nursing a broken heart or trying to quit a more serious problem, having someone that you can depend on, who will not enable, you but strengthen you, is key.

Don’t Compare Yourself to Others!

Focus on One Habit at a Time! Are you an overachiever? You may be if you are one of those who say, “This year, I’m going to lose 30 pounds, start my book and learn how to crochet!” Wow, that’s a lot of goals with a lot of smaller goals hidden inside! You can’t make a scarf until you know which yarn to buy, and that’s a goal in itself! So, this is one time of the year where it doesn’t pay to be an overachiever. Pick one goal that really means something to

you and work on it. Also, it helps to practice or refrain as often as your individual goal requires.

Get Help or Grab a Buddy! If your goal is to run a 5k when you’ve never made it around the block before without huffing and puffing, you might need a little help; otherwise you’re going to be

Carrollwood Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

tempted to quit! If you really want to do it, it’d be really helpful to talk to someone who enjoys doing what you are learning to do, because they can give you some helpful tips. There are all kinds of resources online, around town and most likely in your own network of friends. So, ask around! Make your resolution known, and you might make some new friends in

Listen, we all know that “one person” who lost a ton of weight “without even trying” or quit smoking “cold turkey.” Don’t get caught up in comparison! You are you, your goals are as unique as you are, and comparison only makes people lose confidence, so keep focused, and avoid falling into this tricky trap! Whatever your New Year’s resolutions are, all of us at Neighborhood News & Lifestyles hope that 2015 is filled with blessings and success! We hope these little tips will help your dreams become a reality!

Brain Balance of Tampa May Have the Answers to Help Your Child Reach New Milestones of Success When your child is labeled with ADD or ADHD, it is beyond frustrating! Brain Balance Center of Tampa in Oldsmar wants parents to know that there is hope. ADHD is one of the most common childhood disorders and is characterized by developmentally inappropriate levels of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior, and the symptoms can make it very difficult for a child to succeed in school. Many parents are finding success with the programs at Brain Balance Achievement Centers for ADHD and much more. Brain Balance use proven strategies to help children exercise their brains. Brain Balance helps children who have ADD, ADHD, Dyslexia, Tourette’s, Asperger’s Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Learning Disabilities or Processing Disorders, to work beyond those challenges and become more successful socially, developmentally and cognitively. ter of Tampa, located in Oldsmar, takes a whole-child approach that is personalized and focused on finding causes, rather than masking symptoms. There are more than 50 Brain Balance Achievement Centers in the nation, where children are given an individualized program that includes nutrition, sensory motor coaching and academic skill improvement. Employing Florida Certified Teachers who have impressive re-

sumes in the fields of Behavioral Sciences and Exceptional Education, Brain Balance takes a “brain-based, not drug-based” approach. Brain Balance is an education facility, not a medical facility, and they make it a lot of fun for kids to come, play, grow and change! to overcoming the symptoms of childhood learning and developmental issues like ADHD. It offers a cutting-edge, integrated approach that combines three core modalities into one program, integrating physical, sensory motor, and cognitive exercises with nutritional guidance to effectively address the root cause of these issues. Brain Balance’s unique, whole-child approach has helped thousands of kids reach their physical, social/behavioral, and academic potential. The Brain Balance program comes directly from Dr. Robert J. Melillo’s research on neurobehavioral disorders. Dr. Melillo, a worldrenowned neurologist, professor and author, strongly believes that conditions such as ADD, ADHD, Tourette’s, Autism spectrum disorders and processing disorders, which were previously thought to be unrelated, are in fact related, and can be grouped into what is called “Functional Disconnection Syndrome.” In

Carrollwood Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

his book, “Disconnected Kids,” Dr. Melillo explains that if you were to take a child with any of these conditions and give them an MRI scan, or any other number of medical tests, there would be nothing to find. Their brain is not damaged. These issues are all connection issues, and research has proven that the left hemisphere of the brain and the right hemisphere of the brain have distinct responsibilities, abilities and functions. Research has found that when one-half of the brain has a deficiency, it leads to these connectivity issues,

which can result in a “disconnect” between a child and their ability to learn, communicate and succeed. The goal is to challenge the hemisphere of the brain that is showing a deficiency, and to stimulate it so that it will learn to function. The Brain Balance Achievement Center of Tampa is located at 4022 Tampa Rd., Suite 6. For information or to schedule a tour, please call 813-475-6977. “Landon” Continued from page 1 patients come here because they know they can get an honest opinion and really good customer service; they come here to get something done and get it done well!” Dr. Landon says, “Landon Plastic Surgery is very comprehensive and it is important for people to know, that everything we do, we do a lot of; we do procedures multiple times a week in every category. We handle about 700 cases a year.” Recently joining the Landon team is Dr. Gloria Thomas, a very well established female plastic surgeon. Previously owning a private practice for years, Dr. Thomas has over 20 years or experience and brings with her a multitude of knowledge and a lengthy list of happy patients. “She is a nice edition to the office because there is a subset of patients that would prefer a female physician, so now we offer that as well to better serve the needs of our patients,” says Dr. Landon. I can tell you, from my own personal experience, that Dr. Landon and his staff truly are amazing. From day one, his staff went above and beyond to provide me with a personalized ex-

perience and did a great job of making me feel comfortable and relaxed. From my first consultation, where the staff was very thorough and actually listened to what I had to say, to the night of the operation where Dr. Landon called me at home to see how I was doing, to the months following the operation, where Dr. Landon and his staff did an excellent job making sure everything progressed and healed right, Landon Plastic Surgery really has set the bar with how patients should be treated. “We do take care of our patients and I do think we offer that extra level of service,” says Cheryl. “I almost think we nurture patients. We have an amazing, amazing staff. They are all truly wonderful. We really care about our patients and our patients know that. They almost feel part a part of the family.”

World-Class Technology Using the newest, most innovative technology, Dr. Landon’s 3D breast imaging machine allows patients to see exactly what their implants are going to look like before the surgery, and gives them the opportunity to “try out” different sizes to see what will look best on their body and what size will give them the desired

outcome that they hope to achieve. Dr. Landon says, “We offer patients the ability to take a virtual road trip with different size implants to see how the implants are going to look on their body. This has really done a great job of alleviating the anxiety.” The newest in patientcentered advancements, Landon Plastic Surgery has recently introduced Touch MD to their practice. Interactive software for patient education, Touch MD, as like the 3D breast-imaging machine, gives patients the opportunity to experience the closest thing they can to having surgery, before the actual surgery. By uploading a picture of the patient’s target area to the software, Dr. Landon is able to show his patients where the incisions are going to be made, as well as the projected outcome as to what that area will look like postsurgery. “This gives patients a sense of familiarity, making them feel comfortable about their decision,”

This Tuscan-inspired spa boutique will take you on a journey to ultimate relaxation, so get ready to be pampered as you are soothed by the calming music and rejuvenating aromas. “We are not your typical spa, I have always said that this is Trinity’s best kept secret,” says Patient Coordinator Kim. “The atmosphere is vey different because it is a Tuscan-inspired boutique and spa. It’s not clinical. All of our aestheticians are very caring about their clients. And the best part is, all of our full facials include a neck, shoulder, arm and hand massage. We also have a changing room, a full shower, spa robes and spa socks. It’s not just about the skin; it’s about making sure that our clients are extremely pampered while they are here. That’s my job – making sure everybody feels like they are special and pampered and that we really care about them!”

Bring a Buddy and Receive 50% off a Full Spa Service! I’m sure we all know a few friends and family members that could use a little pampering. So, why not refer them to The Spa Boutique, especially since through their Bring a Buddy Program, for every new client that you refer, both you and your guest will receive 50% off any one of their full spa services. The Spa Boutique offers a variety Carrollwood Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

of unique facials, as well as body wraps, waxing and massages. Kim says, “All of four facials are customized to the clients. Because of this, we have several different skin care lines – we offer everything from physician-grade skin care products to an organic line based – which we use based upon the individual needs of the client.” All of their full (60-minute) services include a complimentary snack tray – consisting of gelato, cheese and crackers and a homemade truffle, handmade by Cheryl, herself – a beverage, and time in the Serenity Room – a relaxing room, where guests can kick back and unwind before their appointment. In addition to the spa side, they also have a boutique, which carries a variety of jewelry, glasses, dresses, purses, bath sponges and robes, etc. In much need of some pampering myself, after talking to Kim, I decided to set up an appointment to get a facial. Sonia was my aesthetician, and wow was the facial wonderful! Drifting away to classical music quietly playing in the background, Sonia’s hands gently massaged the cleansers into my skin, getting off all the dead skin and blemishes. After an hour of pampering – which included a muchneeded shoulder and hand massage – I slowly awakened from my relaxing trance and left the spa with beautifully glowing skin! Immediately after my appointment, I was already booked for my next visit. I even booked my husband for an appointment – who is a first time client, by the way! If you are in much need of some divine indulgence after the chaos of the holidays come on in to The Spa Boutique, and don’t forget – bring a friend! In addition, deconstructed wine crates, magnum bottles and casks create a congenial décor throughout the restaurant. Tired of going to a rowdy sports bar to watch a televised game? Social media is abuzz with highly favorable reviews of the food, the wine as well as the total dining experience. Whether you prefer whites or reds, there are fabulous pairings available for all their menu items. Just ask your wait-person for a recommendation that suits your taste if you’re not familiar with the vineyards represented. Typically, the last Monday of the month, The Vine features its Wine Dinner that affords you the opportunity to experience an Open Bar from 6-7 with passed hors d’oeuvres, followed by a five-course meal, each course paired with its perfect wine complement. I understand that representatives of the wineries are on hand to discuss the wines’ characteristics as well the regions where they are crafted. What a wonderful way to have the opportunity to explore wines you may have missed!

From what I am given to understand, this Wine Dinner is also a superb vehicle for tasting the chef’s wine-specific food creations that are not presented on the regular menu. Reservations are required, with the per person charge typically around $65.00, depending on wines featured. My husband and I will certainly be on board to enjoy this! What an absolutely marvelous idea it would be to purchase a Gift Card for your friends, family or business colleagues so that they could experience what The Vine has to offer for themselves! Transform Your Mantel, Transform Your Home at Zoho Stone Architectural Products By Julie Kanehl They say that the home’s fireplace is a natural focal point, gathering place and a symbol of peace, warmth and tranquility for your family. Builders know this, and even in Florida, fireplaces are one of the most requested items on a homebuyer’s checklist. Not because they need the warmth, but because of how important and historic gathering around the fireplace actually is! In Florida, where we don’t often need the fireplace for heat, it’s the mantel however that steals the show! So what does your fireplace mantel say about your home? Is it majestic? Is it the perfect place to gather around, take milestone photos in front of and decorate each season? It’s more likely that your fireplace mantel dates your home. The mantels at Zoho Stone Architectural Products are a style unto themselves! be welcomed by a professional staff, all of whom are eager to help you find your dream mantel, which will work perfectly for your home. With so many design styles, colors and textures to choose from, the hardest part is figuring out which mantel to choose! Michel says, “Our mantels are very detailed, fabricated by hand and most are made to order. We have over 50 designs to choose from and 10 of them are adjustable.” The first step is to determine the size of your firebox, or your actual fireplace insert. That dictates what options you have for design. Between classical, contemporary and modern styles, there are options that are designed to fit your exact taste and fireplace surround. Michel adds, “We have a foolproof measurement system for determining the size of your mantel.” Next, you can customize your mantel by choosing a color and a texture that best fits your home. Textures include Smooth, Travertine, Sandstone, Aged Stone, and now you can even choose to have a Venetian plaster marbleized design. Whether you prefer something with smooth, contemporary lines, or you love the scrolls and flourishes of

their classical collection, there’s a mantel that will speak to you. Some have artistically carved shells, while some feature a fleur-de-lis, yet others have columns and a Mediterranean feel. The options seem truly endless. The Zoho Stone website also is a great place to start, since it offers you a chance to view their entire mantel catalog. Of course, nothing is better than visiting the showroom and seeing some of them in person. Their mantels are truly remarkable and would make an incredible addition to any home. Friendship Singers Celebrate 20 Harmonious Years! By Marcy Sanford “Friendship and peace, may it bloom and grow,” sang members of The Friendship Singers at the beginning of their 20th Anniversary Celebration in December. Member after member of the group will tell you that while they are proud of the joy and peace they bring to the people they sing to, being a member of the group brings joy and peace to them personally as well: the joy of forging new and lasting friendships and the peace of knowing there is a community of people to celebrate with you during happy times and support you during difficult ones. “A friend told me about the Friendship Singers 19 years ago,” says Joyce Allen. “I have always loved to sing. I like going to the nursing homes and being able to entertain the patients there. It is wonderful to be able to bring a little comfort and happiness to people’s day. ily to each other. It is a wonderful group of people.” After their holiday performances at the Baldomero Lopez State Veterans Home, First Baptist Church, and the Old Schoolhouse in Lutz, The Friendship Singers will take a brief break. They will resume rehearsals and performing in January.

The only requirement for becoming one of The Friendship Singers is a love of singing. The group practices twice a month at the Land O’ Lakes Senior Citizens Center and typically performs twice a month at homes and centers throughout Hillsborough and Pasco County.
