“Calendar” Continued from page 4 Miniature Art Society of Florida (MASF) to Present “40th Annual International Miniature Art Exhibition” at Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art Jan. 18–Feb. 15––America’s “golden age” of the portrait miniature (about 1740-1850) came to an abrupt halt with the advent of photography in the mid-1800s. But the love of creating art ‘in little’ did not die. There was a resurgence of interest in the early 20th century, and the tradition of creating original art in small scale, with great emphasis on detail, maintains a respected stature in the Fine Arts. In celebration of this unique art form, The Miniature Art Society of Florida (MASF) will host its 40th Annual International Miniature Art Exhibition at the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art (LRMA) from Jan. 18 through Feb. 15, 2015. A spectacular display of miniatures will be on view – not only paintings but scrimshaw, fired porcelain and sculpture – including works created by some of the world’s finest miniature artists. With

few exceptions, all of the art is for sale. Approximately 900 works of art were submitted for entry in the juried show from 33 states and 10 countries. Nearly 700 of these works by 185 artists will be on view along with MASF’s permanent collection of more than 100 miniatures. Magnifying glasses are available for complete enjoyment of the small treasures. During the exhibition’s run, visitors may observe artists as they demonstrate their techniques, including oil painting, acrylic, colored pencil and sculpture. Most of the artists create under magnification, using a variety of mediums, methods and very small brushes for paintings. Demonstrators hail from England, Canada and many U.S. states, including Florida. Also on View at LRMA Dance – Alive in Tampa Bay: Photography by Tom Kramer––on view through Feb. 28––Dance, film and theater photographer, Tom Kramer, has had a long and illustrious career as a professional still photographer working for CBS, Lorimar, Universal Studios and many independent producers. Since moving to St. Peters-

burg with his wife, Paula, a choreographer, Kramer has photographed SPC’s CoMotion Dance Theatre and other dance and theater programs on both sides of Tampa Bay. He is well known and admired for his technical ability to dramatically capture the essence of a performer in action. This exhibition, which celebrates the 30th season of CoMotion, features 11 of Kramer’s color digital photographs. Opened in 2002, the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art is a modern and contemporary art museum featuring more than 6,000 works of 20th and 21st century art. The museum is located just west of U.S. Highway 19 at 600 Klosterman Road, on the Tarpon Springs Campus of St. Petersburg College. Museum hours are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Thursday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Friday and 1 – 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and free to children, students and active military with ID. On Sundays, admission is by donation, and docent tours are offered at 2 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays and major holidays. Isabelle’s Museum Store is open during regular business hours.

Aging is a Part of Life, but it Does Not Mean You Have to Feel Old! By Marcy Sanford The way we feel, the way we think, the way we heal, the way we look is all dictated by our body’s hormones. If you’ve had difficulty losing weight, often feel sluggish, have lost your sex drive or are starting to see signs of aging, Tampa Rejuvenation can help.
Stop the Negative Signs of Aging “As you get older, both men and women begin to lose levels of estrogen and testosterone,” says Gina Pastore, ARNP-MSN, board certified antiaging specialist. “Undiagnosed thyroid conditions can also cause a hormonal imbalance. With bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, we run a full screen of lab tests on a blood or saliva sample to determine if hormone levels have declined. A compound pharmacy then creates hormones that
10
are identical to the ones found within your body. The purpose is to establish hormonal balance, which will help you regain your energy, stamina, even your body’s ability to lose weight. As hormones start to rebalance, some patients are able to cut back and in some cases even stop other medications such as blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and sleep medications.” Depending upon the patients’ lifestyles, methods of administration can be customized to a cream, trochee, capsule, injection or even pellets. “There is no reason to accept the negative effects of aging,” says Tampa Rejuvenation client Carol. “At 35 years old I began noticing changes in my body and the way I felt. I gained 20 pounds, was always tired, and my desire for sex disappeared. I went to several doctors and they told me I was normal and that what I was feeling is part of normal aging. I have been on Tampa Rejuvenation’s amaz-

ing program for 3 months and lost 18 pounds and feel great. I am back to my revitalized self.” Tampa Rejuvenation client Allen says, “Who would have ever thought a man would need hormone replacement therapy at 38. I knew I had lost something. When I read the symptoms of Andropause, I thought they were talking about me. Hormone replace-

ment therapy has changed my life.” Gina says that hormones can become imbalanced at any age and that she sees patients as young as 20, and up to their late 70s. She says, “Hormonal imbalance can be caused by aging, genetics, lifestyle factors, stress or even trauma/injury to the body that can affect the endocrine glands that produce or regulate hormones.

At Tampa Rejuvenation, a qualified staff of professionals are ready to help you look and feel rejuvenated! At Tampa Rejuvenation, not only do we look at our patients’ lab results, but we also take the time to talk to them about the symptoms and problems they are experiencing so that we can develop individualized treatments.” Tampa Rejuvenation is a proud member of Forever Health. Gina is one of the only two providers in the Tampa Bay area with this distinction. Suzanne Somers, a supporter of bio-
identical hormone replacement therapy says, “Thanks to BHRT I enjoy robust health, balanced hormones, strong bones, and the energy of someone half my age.”

What Every Woman Ought to Know About Fat Loss Contributed by John Kent I’d like you to meet Susan. Susan is 48 years old and is carrying around a few extra pounds. Well, really what started out as a few extra pounds a couple of years ago has now turned into about 30 extra pounds. But it’s not like she hasn’t tried to get the weight off. It first started when she had a summer cruise coming up and she wanted to look her best in her sundress and swimsuit. So she went on a really strict nofat diet and was able to lose the 7-10 extra pounds she was carrying. (She didn’t feel satisfied eating that way, but stuck to it because she felt the results were going to be worth it.) But when she got back from her cruise, and of course while she was on the cruise, she went right back to her old habits and quickly regained those pounds plus a few more. Then it was motherhood, where she seemed to gain and keep a few more pounds after each pregnancy. After years of yo-yo dieting and experiencing some success along the
18
way but never being able to “stick to it,” Susan has found herself about 30 pounds overweight, depressed, anxious, lonely and feels like “something’s missing from her life.” So this New Year, for 2015, she’s decided that she’s finally going to do it “once and for all.” She’s committed to a really strict diet, no carbs, no sugar, no fat, only lean meats and vegetables. She’s got her exercise plan all mapped out complete with resistance training and high intensity interval training (HIIT), because that’s what all the experts have told her is the absolute no-fail plan for fat loss. But sadly, the road of good intentions can still lead to failure. And Susan, like many others in this same situation, will fail and will likely find herself next year trying to muster up the will power and commitment she needs to “really make it happen this year.” But for them it will be like Yogi Bear says, “It’s like déjà vu all over again.” Why you ask? It is because she does not understand two driving forces of all human behavior. They are

the desire to gain pleasure and the need to avoid pain. That is one of the reasons it is so

Today’s Foster Parents Today’s foster families are skilled, valued partners who parent, nurture and advocate for children in their care, and who mentor and support the child’s birth parents. They leave lifelong impressions on children in their care and are privileged to positively impact the futures of children and families in our community. Today’s foster parents are business owners, soccer moms and retirees. By day, they teach school, sell real estate and work construction. By night, they read bedtime stories, help with homework and give hugs. They work as partners with birth parents, case managers, guardian ad litems, schools and judges to nurture, love and advocate for children in their care. Being a champion for a child in foster care means, as their foster parent, you help bring stability to their life during a time of trauma and help shape their future. Foster parents leave lifelong impressions on children in their
care and are privileged to positively impact the futures of children and families in our community. Foster parents must: • Be at least 21 years old • Have adequate sleeping space (a bed for each child placed in the home) • Demonstrate stable housing and income • Be financially stable Foster Parents can: • Be married or single • Own their home or rent • Have both parents employed outside the home • Be first-time parents, have their own children or be empty-nesters Steps to Foster Get started by calling 866-2330790 to sign up for a free orientation. Get information at an orientation that will explain what is needed to be-
come a foster parent and answer your questions. Once you return a few forms, the next step is training. Get trained at no cost to you with classes called Professional Parenting. You’ll learn about children in foster care, start to understand their grief and
loss issues, and much more. At the end, you will have completed 24 hours of training and be PPT certified. Get licensed to ensure that you, your family and your home are prepared and safe. This will include a home study and background screening
of all household members at no cost to you. If favorable, your home will be licensed to accept children into your care. Am I Ready? How Much Room Do I Need in My Home? You must have enough bedroom space for each foster child placed in your home. They may share a bedroom with your child or another foster child of the same gender. They must have a bed of their own and cannot share a bed nor sleep on a cot or trundle bed. A foster child may not share a bedroom with any adult nor can the adult move out of their bedroom and sleep on the
couch to make room. Does My Home Need to Pass Inspection? It is important that children live in a safe and clean environment. During the home study process, you will be asked to have a health inspection done in your home. Your home must be free of potential dangers and risks. You must have working smoke detectors and fire extinguishers and, if you have pets, they must be current with vaccinations and not present a danger to children in your home. What Are The Physical and Emotional Requirements to Foster? Being a foster parent can be demanding, therefore you must be healthy and emotionally stable. You may be asked to complete a physical exam or provide medical clearance to help establish the state of your physical and emotional health. What Are the Screening Requirements? Thorough background screenings are conducted on all prospective foster families, including Abuse Registry, local criminal and federal criminal clearances (fingerprinting). Background screenings and child abuse clearances are required for all household members.
East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles
What Are the Financial Requirements? While you don’t have to be rich to be a foster parent, you must have adequate income to meet you own family’s needs. You can either own your home or rent. Foster parents are given stipends called “board rates” for the substitute care they provide; the amount of this varies by the age of the child. However, the monthly board rate you will receive is not income. During the home study process, you will be asked to show proof of income and financial stability. What About My Marital Status? Foster parents can be single, married, divorced or in a domestic partnership How Do I Know When I’m Ready? You will know you are ready when your life and home are stable. “Stable” means that you are not about to move and you are not having financial, marital, physical or emotional difficulties. Your home must be in good condition and you must be ready to commit to 36 hours of pre-service training (if you’re married, both parents must attend). Foster parenting impacts the entire family; therefore, everyone in your

Clearwater Lady Bombers 00 are Flashing Bling! The Clearwater Lady Bombers 00 fast pitch softball team is the 2014 ESPN World Series Champs and the young athletes recently received their championship rings! All of us at Neighborhood News & Lifestyles would like to congratulate the Clearwater Lady Bombers 00! We brought you the news back in August about their win, and they have been busy ever since winning! “Girls got their rings tonight!! Teamwork is how we get it done!! Celebrate ladies. Proud we are!!” That was the facebook post of one really proud mom of one the Clearwater Lady Bombers 00. The families and friends of these girls have watched as the team has wrecked the competition, taking it all the way to become the 2014 ESPN World Series Champs. The Clearwater Lady Bombers 00 fast pitch softball team has 13 players – 12 are in 8th grade and 1 is in the 7th grade. The girls, ages 13 and 14 years old, are from all over the Tampa Bay area, but play in the Clearwater Lady Bombers organization, run by president Tony Grat. The players are:
Athena Andrews, Natalie Zweig, Jenna Wojnar, Kendyl Crean, Gillian Sladden, Grace Hastings, Anna Dumovich, Bayley Williams, Morgan Dansby, Mia Merson, Devyn Howard, Lauren Jarnagin and Jane Wickett. The girls are coached by Tom Sladden, Jason Jarnagin, Bryan Williams and Tim Zweig. Head coach Tom Sladden says that the ultimate goal for the players is a college scholarship. He gives a breakdown of what we can expect from the Lady Bombers 00, “Since the USSSA World Series back in July, we have played many USSSA, NSA & ASA tournaments, as well as some college showcase tournaments. Even though we are still 14u age group, colleges are looking at younger and younger players. Nine of our players
East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles
have started high school this year and all of them will be playing for their high school teams – East Lake, J.W. Mitchell, Seminole, Tarpon Springs, Tampa, Plant and St. Pete High. Two of our players are in 8th grade. Since high school softball will be demanding – practicing every day as well as 20plus game schedule, our Lady Bombers team will be shut down until the end of April. Our long-term goal is to get all of our players signed to a college scholarship. Our short-term
goal is to win an ASA National Qualifier, so we can play in the ASA National Tournament in Virginia in the summer of 2015. We do have one more tournament before we shut down and that is the D9 Winter Showcase at Disney on January 17 and 18.” “Fast pitch travel softball is a year around sport,” adds Sladden. “I would like to thank the parents of all the players for all of the sacrifices made for the girls throughout the year.”

Want to Keep Your New Year’s Resolution? Keep it Simple! tient, because your resolutions aren’t going to be attained by January 15th! If you’re serious about a resolution this year, give yourself a reasonable timeframe in which to complete it! Instead of pledging to lose a huge amount of weight, set smaller goals, with smaller rewards! For example, instead of saying, “If I lose 50 pounds, I’ll book a trip to Jamaica.” Say, “If I lose 10 pounds, I’ll treat myself to a girl’s night out or a round of golf!” People who set smaller, short-term goals are more likely to achieve their larger goal down the road.
By Julie Kanehl A new year is a beautiful gift, a blank slate, a whole new beginning! It’s no wonder that people all over the world jump at the fact to celebrate and make the next year even better by pledging to make changes. New Year’s resolutions aren’t a modern phenomenon, in fact, the Babylonians made promises at the beginning of each year to repay their debts and return anything that they’d borrowed the year before and had forgotten to return! What’s more, the ancient Romans, well, they started each year by making promises to their god, Janus, whose name is memorialized in time. You may know Janus as January. So, this January, what promises do you intend to make? Perhaps you’re one of the millions of people who pledge to lose weight, make more money, quit a bad habit or try something new. Mark Twain wrote, “Habit is habit, and not to be flung out of the
30
window by any man, but coaxed down the stairs a step at a time.” The same is true if you’re trying to start a new habit, rather than eliminating an old one! So whether you’re trying to make or break a habit, here are some helpful hints!

Set Small, Attainable Goals! First of all, resolutions are generally lofty goals. It’s not like your New Year’s resolution is to sit around and watch TV in your underwear, right? Of course not! So, when you’re making a big pledge, or a promise to change, it’s going to take some effort, and some time! Be pa-

Be Patient & Don’t Give Up! When you were little, and you didn’t know how to do a lot of stuff yet, people always said, “Don’t give up, keep practicing!” As adults, many of us seem to have forgotten this. We tend to give up too quickly, and we are far too hard on ourselves in the process. Believe in yourself, and most of all, try to hold on to the reason and the feeling that inspired you to
East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles
make this resolution in the first place! So, if you’ve promised to give up smoking and you relapse, put them down, start fresh and give yourself a second chance! Every minute that you’re not smoking you’re becoming healthier. Take it from someone who never wanted to quit, had no intention of doing so, and thought I wouldn’t feel any different if I actually did. It’s been four years since I quit smoking, and trust me, if I can do it, you can do it! Some people believe that it takes just three weeks to make or break a habit, but I’ll tell you what works 100 percent of the time: Believing in yourself and never giving up! Focus on One Habit at a Time! Are you an overachiever? You may be if you are one of those who say, “This year, I’m going to lose 30 pounds, start my book and learn how to crochet!” Wow, that’s a lot of goals with a lot of smaller goals hidden inside! You can’t make a scarf until you know which yarn to buy, and that’s a goal in itself! So, this is one time of the year where it doesn’t pay to be an overachiever. Pick one
If you’re trying to break a habit, having a buddy or a friend on your side is instrumental. Sometimes you may need someone that you can just call when you’re feeling low, someone who knows your struggle and can talk you through it. Whether you’re nursing a broken heart or trying to quit a more serious problem, having someone that you can depend on, who will not enable, you but strengthen you, is key.
goal that really means something to you and work on it. Also, it helps to practice or refrain as often as your individual goal requires. Get Help or Grab a Buddy! If your goal is to run a 5k when you’ve never made it around the block before without huffing and puffing, you might need a little help; otherwise you’re going to be
East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles
tempted to quit! If you really want to do it, it’d be really helpful to talk to someone who enjoys doing what you are learning to do, because they can give you some helpful tips. There are all kinds of resources online, around town and most likely in your own network of friends. So, ask around! Make your resolution known, and you might make some new friends in the process!
Don’t Compare Yourself to Others! Listen, we all know that “one person” who lost a ton of weight “without even trying” or quit smoking “cold turkey.” Don’t get caught up in comparison! You are you, your goals are as unique as you are, and comparison only makes people lose confidence, so keep focused, and avoid falling into this tricky trap! Whatever your New Year’s resolutions are, all of us at Neighborhood News & Lifestyles hope that 2015 is filled with blessings and success! We hope these little tips will help your dreams become a reality!

“Vetture’s” Continued from page 1 people is all encompassing; whether she is at work, helping at the restaurant or being a strong role model and mother for her children and grandchildren. Rick’s involvement in the community starts with his love for football. He recently retired as a football coach, but his love for the sport and the East Lake Eagles is still as strong as ever. Rick coached the kids of East Lake from 1994 onwards and has watched many of those young boys he coached grow into men. Rick says, “We hosted team dinners for years here and I am proud to say that the team still comes to Vetture’s to meet, eat and talk sports. Kids I coached years ago come in with their new families and it has been amazing to see new generations and bonds forming here at Vetture’s.” Not only is Vetture’s a community staple for meeting, greeting and eating – it is home to some of the best Italian cuisine around. Rick’s mom and dad are both from Italy and many of the recipes served at Vetture’s have been in the family for generations. The family recipes, paired with Chef Paulie Pennacchini’s passion for creating delicious meals, makes Vetture’s truly authentic, 100 percent Italian! Chef Paul has over thirty years of accumulated restaurant experience and has been working with Rick for years. His passion and love for food is evident in every dish, all you need is one bite to really understand the depth of hard work Paulie puts into every menu item. During my most recent visit to Vetture’s, the Maida family welcomed me to sit and enjoy an evening of delicious food, great conversation and warm company. Rick, Dianne, their son Corey and daughter Kelli talked with me about their recent renovations to Vetture’s and raved on about Chef Paulie’s skill in the kitchen. Kelli said, “Paulie is the best. He truly enjoys feeding people and he is passionate about his work. He’s teaching me to cook traditional Italian dishes and I could not have asked for a better mentor.” My dinner at Vetture’s was family-style with the Maidas. We laughed a lot and ate even more, sharing food

Stop by this friendly neighborhood eatery and see why Vetture’s has been a community favorite for 15 years! and good conversation. Everyone ordered their favorite kitchen creations from Chef Paulie himself and I was lucky enough to sample a bite of all the masterpieces. We dined upon fresh, perfectly sautéed broccoli raab topped with savory Italian sausage, Eggplant Corey, Zuppa Di Pesche, Veal Rollatini and Mussels and Clams Madiciar. The Eggplant Corey was beautifully presented and composed of penne pasta, sundried tomatoes, eggplant and fresh cheeses in a white wine garlic sauce. The tender and delicious Veal Rollatini was perfectly breaded and paired with a light mushroom, Marsala sauce immediately had my mouth watering. Calamari, shrimp, clams, scungilli and mussels served over linguini in a light marinara sauce made up the zesty and delicious seafood medley that is Zuppa Di Pesce. My mussels and clams Madiciar was full of flavor, boasting garlic, lemon and perfectly steamed shellfish. If you haven’t tried Vetture’s yet, I highly recommend trying a slice of Grandma’s Pie; it’s a perfect

blend of exquisite cheeses, homemade marinara sauce, lots of garlic and whole peeled tomatoes atop fresh hand-tossed dough that has been baked to crispy perfection. And don’t miss out on Paulie’s Eggplant Parmigiana, composed with perfectly battered eggplant, topped with special made in-house marinara, fine cheese and a side of pasta. Our dinner was complete with lots of hugs and promises to meet again soon. Did I mention, I was

sent home with Dianne’s famous cheesecake? Dianne bakes all of the desserts and, trust me on this, you don’t want to miss out on the sweet treats she whips up in the kitchen, even if you have to get it to go and enjoy later!
