Michigan Transplant Transforms Wedding Events at Crescent Oaks & Wentworth Golf Clubs Alissa Klinger and her family relocated from Cheboygan, Michigan to New Port Richey this summer. With extensive experience in events and restaurant management and a real love for Wedding Planning, Alissa found a position as Events Director at Ace Golf, two family-owned golf clubs including Wentworth and Crescent Oaks Golf Clubs. Alissa’s passion for weddings has led to a surge in wedding events at the two popular East Lake area Golf Clubs. “I chose Wentworth and Crescent Oaks because of their two very different, beautiful reception venues. Also, as local, family-owned businesses, I have a lot more latitude to be creative and provide exceptional service,” says Klinger. Membership is not required to hold a wedding or event at either club, and the cost compares favorably with hotel and other venues. Wentworth offers a stately, upscale English Manor Clubhouse and

Alissa helps brides plan their weddings with her calm demeanor, creativity, and attention to detail. “I was raised in a household with a stay-at-home mom who had an attention to detail like no other. Every dinner party was an exercise in planning and every holiday became an event where my mother’s creativity and desire to please others made for a spectacular gathering.” Alissa took her first Country Club Management position right out of college at an exclusive Golf Club in Northern Michigan. It was here that she started her journey in creating one-of-a-kind functions, creating lifelong memories. She later joined a resort restaurant and grew their non-existent catering business to a very busy wedding destination.

Homebound Heroes: Helping Our Veterans, One Home at a Time! By Matthew Selby It’s not everyday you meet someone who has a selfless mission to help others in need with no desire to line his own pockets. We’ve all become increasingly aware of so called charities that although may do some good, do so at the expense of making their owners and operators rich in the process. Roy “Bucky” Shell isn’t built that way. He saw too many of his friends come back from serving our country overseas only to be stuck battling a neverending inner war. After careful consideration upon what Bucky wanted to do for our Veterans, he came up with an idea. He decided to start Homebound Heroes, a privately funded, non-profit organization that provides mortgage-free homes to returning War Veterans. “Homebound Heroes is something I’m very proud of,” says Bucky. “It’s only in the beginning stages, but it has a huge potential. My goal is to eventually get it to a point where we can help hundreds of Veterans; we just need to get the word out. We are

8

dedicated to providing mortgage-free homes to returning War Veterans who have served our country. A majority of our returning heroes suffer from multiple levels of PTSD and have found it very difficult to make the transition back to a civilian lifestyle. Homebound Heroes was created to help relieve the pressure as they make one of the biggest investments of their lives. By providing a house for these brave veterans we can help them adapt to their next mission of succeeding in America and turning their new house into a home.” PTSD is an overwhelmingly big

problem for a large percentage of our veterans. It’s crippling for many, leaving them a shell of their former selves. Our heroes need help! Fed up with the lack of help our servicemen and women were receiving, Bucky decided to do something about it. Bucky was especially upset with organizations who claim to be “all in for Vets” but really are just all in for their salary. This is not the case with Homebound Heroes. Homebound Heroes is committed to ensuring that over 90% of all received donations goes directly towards providing mortgage-free housing for our Veterans. Homebound Heroes is currently working on providing two local Veterans with a mortgage-free home – Michael Yancey, a Veteran of the Army

National Guard and Marine Bobby Malina. Michael Yancey Michael joined the Army National Guard in July of 2003 then went to basic training and advanced individual training. In the summer of 2005 his unit was put on alert that they were going to be deploying to Iraq. During his first tour he took on many responsibilities. From defending Abu Ghraib prison and taking control of all detainees inside the facility to PSD (personal security detail) to convoy security. After returning home just a couple days before Christmas 2006 Michael started doing his weekend drill with his unit, which he contin-

ued for the next few years. Then, in early summer 2009 he was informed that the 53rd Infantry combat brigade was going to be deploying again and needed volunteers. “I made the decision to volunteer and by early 2010 I was on a plane headed overseas again,” says Michael. “Our mission was fob security at camp Patriot Kuwait. We were in charge of convoy security for all ammunition and explosives coming from our military boats going to the ammunition holding area.” “I saw many things that have changed my perception on life,” says Michael. “I am thankful for my understanding wife and my beautiful daughter. Joining the military was one of the best decisions I have made. It gave me a new sense of confidence and pride.”

Bobby Malina Growing up in Palm Harbor, Bobby has been an athlete his entire life. All County his senior year for football, Bobby was voted on the Pinellas County All Star Team. Bobby had scholarship offers to play college football, but in March of 2003, just a few months before graduation, the United States of America declared war on Iraq. After that he didn’t feel college was a top priority anymore and the following weekend he went to the recruiting station and stood outside for a few minutes and thought, “The Marines say they’re the best of the best; let’s do this.” Bobby went to boot camp in October 2003 and was meritoriously promoted to PFC (private first class; E-2, the rank above private) for superior work before graduation in January 2004. In his military career, Bobby

deployed three times and has been on 200+ convoys, 200+ security patrols (mounted/dismounted), and has escorted EODs to many weapon caches. On his 2nd tour to Iraq his vehicle was blown up by IED’s twice on Oct. 8, 2005 and Oct. 17, 2005. Bobby is very lucky to be alive. After returning home his 3rd time Bobby got out of the Marines. In that time the VA diagnosed him with PTSD and TBI (traumatic Brain Injury) from the explosions. “I didn’t think I needed to seek help until after a blackout where my brother told me I was going house to house in my neighborhood trying to clear them, calling for air strikes, and talking to people that weren’t there,” says Bobby. “Luckily I have a very understanding wife who tries to understand what I have been through. We just take it one day at a time and try not to dwell on the things that don’t go our way. I’m just happy I’m still alive and have the chance to see my son grow up.”

The Key is Education If you are retired or are nearing retirement, then you need to know how to protect your money and understand how tax laws will affect your retirement. Often, there are legitimate adjustments that can be made now to reduce tax liabilities. “If clients are already collecting social security when they come to us, they want to know how they can reduce or eliminate taxes on not only social security income, but their overall taxes as well,” says Ed Rizzotto. “A major concern today and what I believe will be a concern for years to come for pre-retirees and current retirees is how to obtain “Guaranteed Income for Life” from your retirement and non-retirement plans. Unfortunately many employer sponsored plans and individual IRAs do not offer this benefit when you retire. We will show you how to put some things in place now that will enable you to set up lifetime income down the road. This is income you will never outlive…similar to a pension. We spend many hours with our clients to put sound plans in place by sharing ‘real time’ tax, income and social security analysis through some of the most so-

phisticated software. We want our clients to leave our office with a better understanding on what their income needs will be in retirement, and how to control, reduce or possibly eliminate taxes.” As part of an overall financial plan, people should also have an estate plan to provide an easy transition of their assets when they pass on. Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group takes a team-oriented approach to tax, retirement and estate planning. Their staff will work with their client’s attorney to achieve their client’s goals. For example, the beneficiary designations on a client’s IRA could impact their estate plan so Mr. Rizzotto welcomes discussions from their estate planning attorney. If you do not already have an attorney, Mr. Rizzotto can refer you to an estate planning attorney. Martha V. Evans from Hitchcock Law Group frequently meets with clients in the Trinity office to review Wills and Trusts. Attorney Evans can help you make sure you plan is up to date and Ed Rizzotto’s staff will make sure your accounts and beneficiary designations coordinate with your estate plan.

3D Solar Educates Community on Solar Energy and Tax Breaks Katie Thomas 3D Solar is Florida’s premier solar installer and outsourcing partner for solar domestic hot water systems (SDW) and Photovoltaic systems (PV). Owner David Ringo opened 3D Solar in the Odessa area over two years ago with a mission to not only design solar systems for homeowners, but also to bring awareness to the area about solar energy and how it can work for the individual homeowner. David says, “Before beginning 3D Solar I worked for a couple different solar companies, but I wanted to be in a business that focused more on customer service, education and quality product, rather than hard sales. I started 3D solar to help people make informed, educated decisions on solar installation. We educate on the benefits of the return of solar as a whole, how systems work and why it is one of the best investments as a homeowner you can make. Since our team’s goal is to educate the consumer about solar energy, rather than just make a sale, we are able to really focus on teaching people about the benefits of

14

solar, which in my opinion, are endless.” Meeting with David and his team to discuss the benefits of solar energy, I wondered aloud why more people haven’t chosen to install solar. The guys explained to me that there is a big education gap when it comes to solar power and how it works, which is why they take the time to really talk to homeowners and explain the many benefits of solar energy. David says, “If people ran their homes like you would run a business, everyone would have solar, because it is an investment that not only saves them money in the long haul, but it increases the home’s value, offers tax breaks, and to my knowledge there is no better return on investment.” Going solar makes sense when you consider that you are spending money anyway for energy – money that is just gone with your electric bill – but the money you put into solar energy is an investment that will eventually pay for itself, enabling you to harness your own energy from the sun. With Florida being the Sunshine State, we have one of the biggest solar

production potentials in the country and having a net-zero home has never been as easily obtained or coveted as it is right now. 3D Solar is licensed and insured to install and design solar systems throughout Florida and has grown to be known as one of the top solar companies for businesses to buy from over the past couple years. Although 3D Solar has grown their business through selling their product to

other installers and businesses, the company also is focused on helping residential communities get set up with solar energy products. 3D Solar has a few different options for residential homeowners, including: Solar Electric Generation, Solar Hot Water Heaters and Solar Pool Heating. Solar Electric Generation helps enables homeowners to generate their own electricity by utilizing residential

photovoltaic (PV) systems or “solar panels” on the home. PV systems are designed to supply accessible and usable solar power by means of photovoltaics. Basically, a PV system converts the sun’s radiation into energy you can use as a power source through a gridtied system. This means your home creates its own energy and saves that energy to be credited towards your future energy use. Let’s say your home is using the PV system to generate electricity – even when you’re not home using power, that energy goes back into the grid and is credited to your energy usage. So if your home is creating this energy, your meter will turn backwards to give you credit, eventually leading to a build up of free energy that is sourced from nothing else but the sun. It’s a new and exciting time for advances in energy use right now and by in-

stalling solar photovoltaic panels, you are able to take the money you would be paying a utility company and invest it back into your home’s solar system, which not only provides cheaper monthly bills for you, it increases the value of your home and helps you reach a point where you no longer have to be reliant on expendable (and expensive) fossil fuels that are not clean for the environment. In addition to PV systems, 3D Solar installs solar hot water heaters, which is one of the most efficient solar systems for a residential property, along with solar pool heating. Even if you choose to install a PV system, solar hot water heaters are a great addition for a better return on investment. Solar is for Everyone The majority of the world’s energy is generated from fossil fuels including coal, oil and natural gas. Traditionally, fossil fuels have been the go-to source of energy production, but

growing environmental concerns, rising prices and the overuse of expendable resources has more and more people looking into renewable energy. Solar, as opposed to fossil fuels, has unlimited potential and has emerged as one of the most rapidly growing renewable sources of electricity. Solar power is appealing to homeowners and potential homebuyers for good reason. It offers clean, infinitely renewable energy captured from the sun and converted to usable energy that heats and cools your home without tapping into non-renewable resources like oil, gas and coal. The Time to Install Solar is Right Now! The Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) ends on December 31st 2016, which means that homeowners now have less than a year to receive a 30 percent federal tax credit for solar system installation for residential homes. The ITC has helped solar installation grow by more than 1,600 percent since it was implemented in 2006 and has

ensured that solar companies have helped create lower costs of installation for the consumer. If you want to produce your own energy using solar power, the time to act is now, so you can receive a solarfor-dollar reduction on your income taxes that you would otherwise pay the federal government. After the tax incentive ends on December 31st 2016, the credit ends unless Congress extends the deadline. The 3D Solar team is ready to show you how solar energy products can benefit you. They can show you how solar works to power your home and saves you money in real-time. The facts are clear and the time is now. Solar is the future. It is energy that pays for itself. “Rizzotto Tax” Continued from page 11 Concierge Level Service While taxes are a large part of The Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group, the majority of their clients also utilize the firm’s other services including investments, retirement planning, long term care, annuities, life insurance, wills and trusts. Ed says, “Clients like the opportunity we provide to get everything taken care of in one place.” “When people come in to see us,” says Ed, “the first thing we do is dedicate one to two hours to complete an overall review that covers the last couple of years, including going over their tax returns in detail, studying their portfolios, and discussing their important concerns to determine how we can help them. Then, at a followup appointment, we present a thorough plan for them. “Saving on taxes, reducing or eliminating taxation on social security and protecting the financial wellbeing of a spouse after another’s death – those are things that my clients are

concerned about. Today, people also want alternatives to the low interest rate environment provided by CDs and money market accounts.” Rizzotto explains that being involved with his clients in all the key areas of tax returns, insurance needs and investments allows his team to keep a keen eye on each client’s bottom line. “We’ve had people who had other advisors and financial planners who convinced them to make changes, not aware of the tax impacts. To me, the tax return is the most important document the client owns, that’s why it is the first thing we look at when the client meets us for their initial appointment. If there is an investment or change that could cause a taxable event, we know that up front.” Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group’s area of expertise over the years has been working with retirees, but they also work with clients of all ages in the area of retirement planning. “You’re never too young or too old to start saving for retirement,” says Rizzotto. “We have found that many people we meet who are still working have

changed jobs about every five to seven years, and many of those people left their retirement plans at their old employers (i.e. 401k, 403b, 457, and TSP plans, etc.). Many of these plans can be rolled over to individual IRAs or Roth IRAs, thus giving the client more control and the ability to have someone to advise them. We feel it is imperative for those people ages 59–1/2 or older who are still employed to become educated on a very significant act signed into law by congress over ten years ago that changed the rules governing these employer sponsored plans, what their options are, and what they can do to prepare for their family’s financial future.”

Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group has 2 locations: 3030 Starkey Blvd. at the Florida Design Consultants Center in the Long Leaf community of Trinity; and 1034 Belcher Road S. in Largo. Call (727) 6839119 or visit www.rizzottotax.com for additional information or to schedule an appointment.

Local Author Publishes The Vulnerable, an Intriguing Non-Fiction Novel About Saving Her Brother From True Evil By Matt Selby Last week I had the pleasure of meeting with local author Betsy MacDonald to talk about her new book, The Vulnerable. A true story, The Vulnerable is an intriguing book about Betsy’s autistic brother Michael, who suffers from Asperger’s and her journey to reconnect with her family and help Michael escape a tortuous relationship with a couple that was supposedly caring for him; when all the while, they were taking advantage of him, abusing him, and even poisoning him. They were slowly attempting to murder him and make it look like an accident just to gain his inheritance.

18

The Vulnerable has all the makings of a Hollywood thriller, but like I said, this is unfortunately a non-fiction tale. Speaking of Hollywood, Betsy says she is meeting with some movie producers that sought her out after reading The Vulnerable, so a screenplay may very well be next. During our interview Betsy described to me some of the horrible things that these people did to her brother; it made my stomach flip flop. I can’t imagine how anyone could live with himself or herself after committing such heinous acts; manipulating an autistic person for their own personal gain. It’s absolutely disgusting,

and when I asked Betsy what her ultimate goal was in telling her story she replied, “I just want to make people aware of what can happen to the ones we love, especially those who may become vulnerable without the right people in their lives. I want to help people see that they need to make a plan, especially if they have a child or a loved one with autism. I want people to really think about what could happen to that person if they weren’t around, that way they can prepare and hopefully prevent something terrible from happening, because once it’s too late there might not be anyone around to protect them.” I don’t want to give too much of the book away, but I am happy to report that Betsy has saved Michael and he currently lives with Betsy and her husband locally. I personally have a close friend, whom I’ve known since

JANUARY 2016

high school, who has Asperger’s so this story really hits home for me. Betsy says, “Knowledge is power. It is my wish that by hearing our story, maybe one person’s life can be saved!” Betsy MacDonald’s book The Vulnerable is for sale at Amazon.com. Betsy is a psychiatric R.N. holding positions as a Mental Health Director, where she lectures the public and health agencies. She also served as Director of Nursing at a hospital and has counseled and evaluated youth in school settings. Betsy MacDonald is a nationally published author with nonfiction cover stories. This true mystery has clairvoyance, hauntings, and gutwrenching emotion, as it takes the reader on a journey to crack a family’s code of silence. For more information, visit www.TheVulnerable.net.

Some of Taso’s favorite memories of L’Epicure were the black tie events that catered to big Italian families, Greek nights and learning to cook from French chefs. Taso took the advice he learned from these chefs and he applies it to every aspect of his restaurant today – “You learn it and

“Massages” Continued from page 1 and Florida, Karla Barkdoll is a member of the American Massage Therapy Association, and is Nationally Board Certified. Karla’s massages can be done anywhere – at home, poolside, or at the office. Most of her clients choose the room in their house that offers the least distractions, and there she creates a wonderful environment for massage. She also takes the time to really speak to her clients before their massage to learn more about them and any physical discomfort or problems they have, so that she can create a therapeutic massage that will be most beneficial to each individual. Lindsey from New Port Richey says, “If you are looking for the best massage, then look no further than Karla, she is a rare find. Once you have a massage from Karla, you will look no further, that I will guarantee!” Massage Services that Improve Your Life “Your Health is your Wealth” is the philosophy at Barkdoll Massage Therapy, and that is why Karla takes

26

the time to really find out what kind of massage you prefer, whether it’s a Swedish massage or a deep tissue treatment for chronic pain, Karla’s massage will make a difference in your life. Karla offers a wide range of affordable massage therapy styles and packages. If you are looking for a traditional massage, Swedish massage treatments are designed to improve circulation, reduce stress and to relieve muscle tension. Hot stone massages also are popular. Warm stone therapy, which is the art of using heated stones in combination with a Swedish massage, is a great method of massage used to dissolve muscle tension and induce deep relaxation. Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic treatment designed to ease the pain and discomfort associated with chronic pain. Karla says, “During deep tissue massages I use trigger points to specifically find the places where the work needs to be done.” Deep tissue massages can help people who live with painful conditions live a fuller life. Another style of massage that Karla offers is sports massage and injury rehabilitation. This style of massage combines the benefits and style of

a deep tissue massage with stretching, which can improve the range of motion in joints. Whether you are healing after a car accident or are suffering from chronic pain associated with a medical condition, this kind of massage can be extremely beneficial. One of Karla’s clients from Trinity said, “I have had the pleasure of having Karla as a massage therapist for the past six years and it has always been an enriching and healing experience. She is knowledgeable, professional and a kindhearted person and I have no hesitation in recommending her service. She has hands of gold!” Prenatal massages are a fantastic way to pamper the mom-to-be while easing some of the side effects of pregnancy. Specially designed massage table pillows create a comfortable position just for a woman during this time, so that pregnant moms can safely enjoy their massage. Aromatherapy is proven to aid in relaxation, and Barkdoll Massage Therapy offers a variety of essential oils and scents that can be used in collabo-

One local couple wrote, “We all have very busy schedules and it saves us time and stress to have Karla come right to our home. My husband has chronic pain and her weekly massages help him tremendously. Whether you just want a great stress reliever or you have a medical condition I would highly recommend Karla!” If you are looking for a fantastic way to improve morale at work, how about offering your employees a corporate seated massage? of massage focuses on the back, neck, shoulders, scalp, arms and hands. What a great way to let your employees know how much you care about them! It was all very easy for me since I wasn’t going to have to worry about driving anywhere or a babysitter for the kids! I simply picked out a quiet room in the house, sent the kids outside to play with my hubby, and got ready to enjoy my massage. Karla, a true professional, arrives right on time bringing everything she needs with her. She takes the time to ask about any injuries you may have suffered in the past, and current complaints that she needs to be aware of. Karla and I decided that a combination Swedish and deep tissue massage would be most beneficial for me. more relaxed because I was at home. I enjoyed the entire hour instead of wondering how many minutes had passed, or wondering about the kids. I felt safe, pampered and well cared for. The best thing about Barkdoll Massage Therapy is how affordable it is, making it possible to benefit from theapeutic massage on a regular basis. Barkdoll Massage Therapy is an entirely mobile massage therapy business that comes to you. Karla Barkdoll (License # MA47546) is available 7 days a week, from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. To schedule an appointment or to request more information about massage packages, corporate events or gift certificates, call (727) 372- 6389 or email Karla Barkdoll at barkdollmassagetherapy@yahoo.com
