From The Editor Alexis Selby

The New Year. A Fresh Start. A New Beginning. For me, the beginning of the New Year signifies a time for hope, inspiring you to make changes or do things differently. It can be an exciting time, filled with enthusiasm and anticipation, as we think about our potential for the upcoming year. It is a time of reflection – honoring what has happened, what is currently happening, and what is yet to come. Celebrating milestones in our life such as the New Year allows us to contemplate our lives in a way we often don’t do. Constantly moving through life on autopilot, it is easy to get caught in the daily grind, dragging along week by week with our routines and schedules. The New Year is a break in this pattern. It is both an ending and a beginning. It is an opportunity to stop, reflect, and start again. As we move into this next chapter of life, it is important to think about what we accomplished in 2015. A lot can happen in the span of a year, and I'm sure for most of us 2015 was filled with many wonderful experiences, and

challenging ones as well. Take a moment to look back upon the beautiful memories you created this past year. I'm sure if you think about it, there were many. Too often, memories are forgotten and as we get caught up in our routines we lose sight of what is truly important to us and forget about just how lucky we are. Also – just as important – take some time to reflect on what didn't go so well, as it is only by acknowledging these hardships that we are able to let go of the past and move forward into the future. The challenges we have faced give us strength and courage, and in some way or another have helped shape us into who we are today. As we look towards the future, embrace it with an open heart. Honor your past, cherish the beautiful memories, and be willing to let the challenging times go. In the words of Brad Paisley, “Tomorrow is the first blank page of a 365 page book. Write a good one!”

You Deserve NEWsom EYES!

Featuring three generations, Dr. T. Hunter Newsom (R) is acccompanied by his daughter Madison (Middle) and father Dr. William Newsom (L). By Alexis Selby Arguably one of the most significant of the five senses, vision is often something we take for granted, that is, until our eyes no longer work the way they used to. As we get older, naturally our body begins to age; the eyes are no exception. At first, impairment in vision might not seem so noticeable, but as time progresses slowly your vision deteriorates until one day you find yourself waking up and when you open your eyes it’s as if you are underwater; everything is blurry and you can barely see your own reflection. Vision impairment greatly affects one’s quality of life and ability to enjoy the beauty around us – but it doesn’t have to! At Newsom Eye, they want you to know that you are not alone. Millions of others suffer from the same debilitating effects of vision impairment. But, there is hope! You can have NEWsom EYES! Newsom Eye offers Cataract, LASIK and Glaucoma Surgery. The Newsom Eye team, led by world-renowned surgeon T. Hunter Newsom, MD utilizes the most advanced medical laser technology in the world; even better, they have an office located right here in South Tampa! Following in the footsteps of his father, who is also an ophthalmologist, Dr. Newsom has had a passion for the field for as long as he can remember. “I have always had an interest in oph-

thalmology,” says Dr. Newsom. “I’ve always liked working with my hands. Even if I won the lottery and never had to work again I would still do what I do. I love what I do and the gratification from giving people their vision back is something I don’t want to live without. It’s really a unique, special thing!” Starting with a staff of five, within a year of opening his first location in Sebring, Florida in 2001, Dr. Newsom, had already began building his own surgery center as a way to implement the new technology in Cataract and LASIK surgery that he, himself, had helped to develop. Opening his own surgery center not only allowed him to help more people, it also gave him the platform to do more research, which in turn caused his practice to grow at a substantial rate; he recently passed a significant milestone – over 100,000 patients since opening his practice 14 years ago! Dr. Newsom says, “When I first opened my practice, it started off as a very intimate family business. My children would often come to work with me; we had a room above the office where they would play during the day. Although we have expanded we are still a family practice.” And, as such, they still abide by the same standards and dedication to quality customer service that was implemented day one. “We are really dedicated to making our patients feel comfortable,” adds Dr. Newsom. “The more comfortable they are, the easier my job is.”

World-renowned surgeon T. Hunter Newsom, M.D.

Hoping to one day continue the family legacy, Dr. Newsom’s oldest daughter Madison, already knows what she wants to do when she grows up – she wants to be just like her dad! During the summer, and whenever she has the free time, she can be found alongside her dad shadowing him and helping whenever possible. Dr. Newsom’s wife, Stacy is also very involved in the business and has been by her husband’s side from the very beginning. When looking for an eye surgeon, experience and accreditations are everything, so if you want the best of the best, look no further than Newsom Eye! Developing much of the technology that is used in his practice, Dr. Newsom truly is a leader in the field and is among the best and brightest in the world. His noteworthy accomplishments include: • Inventor of the Newsom Bladeless Laser Cataract Surgery Technique, and adapting the IntraLase Femtosecond Laser for use in Cataract Surgery. • Principal Investor for the FDA study of lenses implanted after cataract or lens replacement surgery. -Segmented Bifocal IOL -Light Adjustable Lens -Softec HD IOL for Blended vision •First surgeon in the world to implant Aphakic Artisan™ intraocular lenses in a patient with megalocornea. • First surgeon in the US to implant FDA approved bilateral Aphakic Artisan™ intraocular lenses.

•One of only two surgeons nationally recognized for “Surgical Excellence” in cataract and implant surgery awarded by the American College of Eye Surgeons. • One of the first surgeons in the US to surgically implant both the Visian™ and Verisyse™ phakic iontraocular contact lenses. There are many things to consider when choosing an ophthalmologist. In addition to accreditations and experience– which Dr. Newsom clearly has – technology is another important aspect. At Newsom Eye, Dr. Newsom and his colleagues use only the most cutting edge and newest laser technology available, allowing them to provide the most outstanding surgical results. It is also important to note that their surgical center is AAAHC approved, which is significant in that it shows their continued dedication to maintaining the highest national standard in sterility and safety. LASIK patient Jennifer Miller, MD writes, “As a physician, I depend on seeing clearly every day to effectively perform my job. For years I have been afraid to trust anyone with the surgical correction of my eyes. When I learned about Dr. Newsom and his state-of-the-art facility and latest technology, I knew at last I had found someone I could entrust with my vision. The entire experience was positive – from the pre-operative exam, the day of procedure, and the post-operative follow up. By the next day, I was restored to perfect vision and felt great. Local Author Publishes The Vulnerable, an Intriguing Non-Fiction Novel About Saving Her Brother From True Evil By Matt Selby Last week I had the pleasure of meeting with local author Betsy MacDonald to talk about her new book, The Vulnerable. A true story, The Vulnerable is an intriguing book about Betsy’s autistic brother Michael, who suffers from Asperger’s and her journey to reconnect with her family and help Michael escape a tortuous relationship with a couple that was supposedly caring for him; when all the while, they were taking advantage of him, abusing him, and even poisoning him. They were slowly attempting to murder him and make it look like an accident just to gain his inheritance.

The Vulnerable has all the makings of a Hollywood thriller, but like I said, this is unfortunately a non-fiction tale. Speaking of Hollywood, Betsy says she is meeting with some movie producers that sought her out after reading The Vulnerable, so a screenplay may very well be next. During our interview Betsy described to me some of the horrible things that these people did to her brother; it made my stomach flip flop. I can’t imagine how anyone could live with himself or herself after committing such heinous acts; manipulating an autistic person for their own personal gain. It’s absolutely disgusting,

and when I asked Betsy what her ultimate goal was in telling her story she replied, “I just want to make people aware of what can happen to the ones we love, especially those who may become vulnerable without the right people in their lives. I want to help people see that they need to make a plan, especially if they have a child or a loved one with autism. I want people to really think about what could happen to that person if they weren’t around, that way they can prepare and hopefully prevent something terrible from happening, because once it’s too late there might not be anyone around to protect them.” I don’t want to give too much of the book away, but I am happy to report that Betsy has saved Michael and he currently lives with Betsy and her husband locally. I personally have a close friend, whom I’ve known since

high school, who has Asperger’s so this story really hits home for me. Betsy says, “Knowledge is power. It is my wish that by hearing our story, maybe one person’s life can be saved!” Betsy MacDonald’s book The Vulnerable is for sale at Amazon.com. Betsy is a psychiatric R.N. holding positions as a Mental Health Director, where she lectures the public and health agencies. She also served as Director of Nursing at a hospital and has counseled and evaluated youth in school settings. Betsy MacDonald is a nationally published author with nonfiction cover stories. This true mystery has clairvoyance, hauntings, and gutwrenching emotion, as it takes the reader on a journey to crack a family’s code of silence. For more information, visit www.TheVulnerable.net.

Trinity Family Physicians Surprise 15-Year-Old Caitlin Shannon With the Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award Caitlin Shannon is remarkable! She makes a difference to so many children in the Tampa Bay Area who are hospitalized by giving them something to smile about! Caitlin created Sparkle Power, a charity organization that gives goody bags filled with fun items to bring “the power of a little sparkle” to children who really need something to lift their spirits. It is no surprise that the 15-year-old was chosen by Trinity Family Physicians’ own Dr. Stephanie Eldridge and Dr. Amir Shirmohammad as the second recipient of the Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award. Committed to their patients and active in the Tampa Bay Area where they both grew up, the husband-and-wife team of physicians started the Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award to bring recognition to individuals who make a difference in the lives of others locally. Dr. “Shirmo” explains, “There are so many terrible things going on around the world. Dr. Eldridge and I

just felt that we have to do something to make people feel happy and good.” With this Award, the doctors are able to honor individuals who work to put smiles on the faces of many, and they hope you will feel inspired at hearing Caitlin’s story. Caitlin suffered irreversible nerve damage during gall bladder surgery when she was just 13 years old. In and out of hospitals for two years while doctors searched for what was causing her excruciating pain, Caitlin bonded with many children and their families and resolved to make a difference for them. Wise beyond her years, she shares, “When someone is first diagnosed with a chronic illness or chronic pain, other people are so good about coming to the hospital and being involved in the first weeks but then it always dies down. I just wanted to do something to bring them happiness.” Caitlin and her family started collecting markers and crayons, stickers and notepads, and other items to

Brooke said, “I always talk to her about building your team. We all have people who want to help and support us – they are on our team – and it’s important to build your team. Like our guy at Sips Specialty Coffee House [on Gunn Hwy.] – he sees us coming and has our order ready every time, and before I can say, ‘We’re in a hurry,’ he is handing out the coffee and muffins. He is on our team.” I Trinity Family Physicians gave Caitlin a basket of think I can speak for Dr. goodies for a little Sparkle Power of her own Shirmo and Dr. Eldridge when I say that after meeting Caitlin, we a lot! Caitlin is active in her high school’s drama program and according to her mother Brooke; she is an amazing and attentive big sister to her three younger siblings. Her charity, Sparkle Power, is sure to continue to grow and bring smiles to children throughout Tampa Bay who are in our local hospitals. Currently, Caitlin is running Sparkle Power out of her bedroom, which her mom says is stacked with trays and bins of supplies for the Sparkle Power bags. One local school has gotten onboard, teaming with Sparkle Power and gathering supplies through the holidays to fill the bags that will put some sparkle in a child’s day. It is our hope that Sparkle Power will continue to gain the support of local businesses and schools throughout Tampa Bay, bringing a dose of happiness to even more hospitalized children. (To learn more about Sparkle Power, please read the story on page 8.) Local Teachers Need Your Help! Bless Baby Bennett!

Born on June 15, 2015, Bennett Rohrbacker is a gift to this world. Born with many special needs, however, at two weeks old, Bennett was diagnosed with 18q Deletion Syndrome, which is a genetic deletion on the 18th chromosome. Due to this deletion, he spent the first 8 weeks of his life with both of his legs in casts because of a foot malformation, and will be undergoing surgery to correct his right foot in a few months. In addition to this syndrome, Bennett has also been diagnosed with hypotonia, or low muscle tone. He takes several medications each day: one for hypothyroidism; one for py-

12

lori spasm (a condition that prevents his stomach from emptying properly); and a cream for his eczema. He also has an aberrant right subclavian artery, where his right subclavian artery passes by his esophagus. Bennett’s parents, local Tampa teachers Natalia and Craig Rohrbacker, have done an amazing job of giving Bennett and his older, 2-year old brother Rowan all the love and attention they need. They have shown unending patience with both an infant who cries frequently and an energetic two-year-old boy – not to mention all of the students they work with each day. They have an unshakable faith in God, which is how they

get their strength each day. Most recently, Bennett was found to have moderate hearing loss in his right ear and profound hearing loss in his left ear. His hearing loss will require assistive hearing devices for both ears – which insurance does not cover. These are just some of the difficulties children with 18q Deletion Syndrome tend to face, along with a possibility of autism and other developmental delays. With each specialist visit comes fifty-dollar co-pay plus additional, medical costs. Due to these expensive medical costs, Bennett’s godmother Julie is asking for your help. She says, “I would love to be able to take some

of the worry off of their shoulders by providing them with money for Bennett’s hearing devices, as well as all of his other current and future medical costs. Natalia and Craig are truly a blessing to baby Bennett. I am hoping that others will want to give them blessings back – in the form of prayers and finances if you are able. Thank you for listening and God bless!” To help donate towards baby Bennett’s hearing aids, please visit www.YouCaring.Com and in the top right search bar type “Bless Baby Bennett”. Any donation is greatly appreciated.
