By Julie Kanehl Massage is a universal language that has been “spoken” for centuries in every region of the globe, and it has many benefits including the ability to reduce anxiety, relieve pain, reduce blood pressure, and aid in relaxation. Finding the right care and education for their children is one of the more challenging, yet essential decisions parents make. Nearly ten years ago my family became part of the Genesis family of schools after we visited Longleaf Learning Center, which is nestled in the Longleaf neighborhood. Consistently during these years, we have experienced caring teachers and staff who have patiently taught our children to love learning. The foundation our children have been provided in a Genesis school has proven to be a wise investment for our children’s future. The Genesis family of schools cares
for children from 18 months of age to 18 years of age. Their schools provide educational excellence for students and peace of mind for parents. Each child is an individual with different talents, capabilities and education requirements, and the Genesis schools recognize this, paying special attention to discern each students’ needs and talents, and apply them to academia, as well as physical, aesthetic and social development. Since the school was founded in 1977 as a private co-educational day school for students, it has grown to include an East and West campus, Longleaf Learning Center, and Genesis Preparatory School for students in preschool through 12th Grade.

250,000 Hours and Counting – Active & Involved! Members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary recently were presented with the President’s Volunteer Service Award for their lifetime volunteer hours in excess of 4,000. The 32 members who earned this prestigious award contributed more than a quarter of a million hours to the missions of the Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxilary. The President’s Volunteer Service Award originated with President Bush who was instrumental in forming the Points of Light Foundation. In 2012, Points of Light mobilized four million volunteers in 30 million hours of service worth about $635 million. As of this summer, Coast Guard Auxiliary Division 11 became a Points of Light organization. There are four levels of awards: Bronze (100 to 249 hours in a year); Silver (250-499 hours in a year); Gold (500+ hours in a year) and Lifetime Achievement (4,000+ hours in a lifetime). They started this award by rewarding Division 11 shipmates for their 2014 mission hours (patrols, teaching, vessel exams, program visits, cooking for the CG, radio watchstanding, and

As a result, at the last two division meetings, Division 11 leadership had the honor of presenting their Bronze and Silver awardees with their ribbons and medallions, and a letter from the President. There are 42 recipients in the Division of the Bronze and Silver, representing over 8,000 mission hours of volunteerism in 2014 for the USCG Auxiliary. At the recent Division 11 Change of Watch ceremony, there were 32 members who have earned Gold or Lifetime Achievement for a total of more than 250,000 hours – that’s a quarter-million mission hours! of those members were present at the ceremony and got their ribbon/medallion, certificate, and letter from the president. Coast Guard Auxiliary Division 11 extends from Madeira Beach to Hudson, including Clearwater, Dunedin, Tarpon Springs, and New Port Richey. Their missions mirror those of the Active Duty Coast Guard with the exception of law enforcement and related activities. Being stewards of the environment and assisting boaters in distress are just two of the many missions completed by the members of Division 11.

C.A.R.E.S. –– Services to Keep Seniors Active & Connected By Julie Kanehl C.A.R.E.S. (Community Aging and Retirement Services, Inc.) is a charitable, not for profit 501(c) (3) corporation that has more heart in its organization and programming than you can imagine. With a goal of providing a quality of life for local seniors who value their independence, CARES Elfers Center provides services that promote a healthy lifestyle, a social calendar that would rival a cruise ship’s, and a wide variety of supportive services that help seniors of all levels of health and ability. Located at 4136 Barker Drive in New Port Richey, CARES Elfers Center is a joyful hub of activity for seniors who, quite frankly, seem to be having the time of their lives. CARES has been providing their programs to seniors and their families in Pasco County since the early 70s, and has since grown to a lovingly-run organization that currently serves more than 3,000 seniors, with more than 500 volunteers and 150 staff members in the Tampa Bay Area. CARES offers a wide range of services, starting with their Senior Centers, which offer free wellness, recreational and educational programs that are all aimed at promoting independence. Far more than providing a place to play Bingo, although Bingo is still on the menu, today’s seniors are active, Tai-Chi and yoga practicing people who are taking computer classes one minute, and learning how eating healthy promotes longevity in the next. There’s dancing, there’s karaoke, there’s woodcarving, Zumba and everything in between. There’s even a CARES Travel Club that provides members with affordable and easy travel options, ranging from daytrips to cruises! In short, CARES provides care that is aimed at helping seniors stay healthy, active and independent for as long as possible. And if and when the time comes that they need more help, there is a CARES pro-

gram at the ready. Unfortunately, as people age, different issues can arise, from needing help around the house, to having feelings of loneliness, or even isolation. CARES is a skilled organization staffed with volunteers who are adept at helping people with their unique concerns, and can assist seniors in many, personalized ways, to help them continue to live independently. For those seniors who live alone, CARES provides a program called Telephone Reassurance, where volunteers make wellness calls to seniors who live alone, calling each day to make sure they are alright and not in need of anything. If they can’t be reached, someone will be sent out to check on them. This is a wonderful program for people who want to continue to live independently, but want the reassurance of being checked in on, just in case help is needed. If you or a loved one is in need of in-home care, including Medicare Home Health, CARES Home Health provides excellent care by compassionate medical professionals who work with your physician to provide care for patients who may need diabetic, medication or pain management, wound care, injections, IV Therapy or catheter care, physical, speech and occupational therapy and more. There are options out there that will allow you or your loved ones to continue living independently while receiving the help that they need, and CARES Elfers Center is dedicated to helping people do just that. For seniors who may not be as independent as they used to be, CARES also offers Adult Day Care, and even provides seniors and their families/care-

givers with a Bill Payer Program that helps people manage their personal and financial affairs. CARES Elfers Center is Newly Renovated & Rocking a Full Activity Schedule for Seniors! What do you think of when you think of a Senior Center? Does it include a group of adults having a great time, laughing and talking and learning together? It should! Today’s seniors are busy having a great time, meeting up with new friends and taking life-enriching classes that cater to the young-atheart and independent spirit. CARES Elfers Center is so much fun, that while visiting, I wanted to join in the fun. But any article about CARES Elfers Center would be remiss without talking about the actual building that houses this fantastic organization. The building itself is a historic treasure, and has a rich history that began with being one of the first elementary schools in Pasco County when it was built back in 1914. This building and the wonderful people in it, taught children during the heart of the depression when children didn’t even have shoes to wear to school, and if you were bad you got a paddling, but you knew you deserved it when you did. This beautiful brick building, the first in Pasco County, served as a school under the skilled and loving watch of Mittye P. Locke until
JANUARY 2016
1965 when they built a new elementary school nearby, Elfers Elementary School, renamed Mittye P. Locke Elementary in 1983 after her retirement in 1979. For many years, this historic treasure sat empty, and was condemned in 1976 and even on the list to be demolished, but a former school board administrator and CARES Board member had a vision for the old building, and worked hard to acquire the grants and the funding to renovate and restore the old school into a senior center. Some twenty years later, the center had to be closed in 2005 due to a water leak that caused a lot of damage. Facing demolition yet again, former School Board Superintendent, Heather Fiorentino and County Administrator, Bob Gallagher, were able to help transfer the ownership of the old school to the Pasco County Government, and a Community Development Block Grant was secured in 2007 saving the old school house once again. While the renovations took place, CARES Elfers Center temporarily relocated, and then finally, in 2013, the newly renovated CARES Elfers Center reopened, saving all of the love and the charm of the original school, decorating with pictures of the school’s rich past, and making it over with new purpose by adding an elevator, updating plumbing, adding a computer lab and even the Avery Branch Library, a branch of the
Trinity Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles
New Port Richey Public Library, which just happens to be in Mittye P. Locke’s old classroom. Director of CARES Elfers, Glenna Hileman, said, “There’s a rich and varied history here. We are in the middle of a campaign to maintain the mission, and to continue to support our program.” Perhaps it’s the way that the light comes pouring in through the expansive windows, or the way that the wood floors have so many stories of their own to tell, but CARES Elfers Center is one of those places that just grabs you and brings you in. It’s a wonderful place, and today it is staffed with some of the hardest working volunteers around. Both the renovated building and the attached annex are always busy with activities, workshops, classes, dances and more. There’s a full schedule of activities including line dancing, woodcarving, painting and even a stained glass class. Between their free classes, you’ll find friends meeting for lunch in their café.
(When I say café, I mean Bistro, because most of the local cafes don’t have a chef of 25 years, named Ginny, who just happens to be a Yale graduate in the field of Culinary Arts whipping up lunch.) Glenna says, “Our participants are served very nutritious meals here, and their nutrition is way better than the average person of their age who isn’t here. We take nutrition very seriously, making sure there is protein, fiber, and carbs that are balanced out over time.” This center is the culmination of years of dedication by volunteers who work for the love of the good that comes from helping people, and CARES Elfers has it down pat. If you or a loved one is looking for a Senior Center where you can make friends, and have a wonderful time in the process, CARES Elfers Center is here for you. CARES Elfers Center is located at 4136 Barker Drive in New Port Richey. For information call (727) 847-1290 or visit www.caresfl.org.

Alissa Klinger and her family relocated from Cheboygan, Michigan to New Port Richey this summer. With extensive experience in events and restaurant management and a real love for Wedding Planning, Alissa found a position as Events Director at Ace Golf, two family-owned golf clubs including Wentworth and Crescent Oaks Golf Clubs. Alissa’s passion for weddings has led to a surge in wedding events at the two popular East Lake area Golf Clubs. “I chose Wentworth and Crescent Oaks because of their two very different, beautiful reception venues. Also, as local, familyowned businesses, I have a lot more latitude to be creative and provide exceptional service,” says Klinger. Membership is not required to hold a wedding or event at either club, and the cost compares favorably with hotel and other venues. Wentworth offers a stately, upscale English Manor Clubhouse and Ve-

randa. Crescent Oaks is a larger, Mediterranean-style banquet facility with sweeping views of the golf and a new outdoor event pavilion. Alissa helps brides plan their weddings with her calm demeanor, creativity, and attention to detail. “I was raised in a household with a stay-at-home mom who had an attention to detail like no other. Every dinner party was an exercise in planning and every holiday became an event where my mother’s creativity and desire to please others made for a spectacular gathering.” Alissa took her first Country Club Management position right out of college at an exclusive Golf Club in Northern Michigan. It was here that she started her journey in creating one-of-a-kind functions, creating lifelong memories. She later joined a resort restaurant and grew their non-existent catering business to a very busy wedding destination.

Local Author Publishes The Vulnerable, an Intriguing Non-Fiction Novel About Saving Her Brother From True Evil By Matt Selby Last week I had the pleasure of meeting with local author Betsy MacDonald to talk about her new book, The Vulnerable. A true story, The Vulnerable is an intriguing book about Betsy’s autistic brother Michael, who suffers from Asperger’s and her journey to reconnect with her family and help Michael escape a tortuous relationship with a couple that was supposedly caring for him; when all the while, they were taking advantage of him, abusing him, and even poisoning him. They were slowly attempting to murder him and make it look like an accident just to gain his inheritance. The Vulnerable has all the makings of a Hollywood thriller, but like I said, this is unfortunately a non-fiction tale. Speaking of Hollywood, Betsy says she is meeting with some movie producers that sought her out after reading The Vulnerable, so a screenplay may very well be next.
30
During our interview Betsy described to me some of the horrible things that these people did to her brother; it made my stomach flip flop. I can’t imagine how anyone could live with himself or herself after committing such heinous acts; manipulating an autistic person for their own personal gain. It’s absolutely disgusting, and when I asked Betsy what her ultimate goal was in telling her story she replied, “I just want to make people aware of what can happen to the ones we love, especially those who may become vulnerable without the right people in their lives. I want to help people see that they need to make a plan, especially if they have a child or a loved one with autism. I want people to really think about what could happen to that person if they weren’t around, that way they can prepare and hopefully prevent something terrible from happening, because once it’s too late there might not be anyone around to protect them.”

I don’t want to give too much of the book away, but I am happy to report that Betsy has saved Michael and he currently lives with Betsy and her husband locally. I personally have a close friend, whom I’ve known since high school, who has Asperger’s so this story really hits home for me. Betsy says, “Knowledge is power. It is my wish that by hearing our story, maybe one person’s life can be saved!” Betsy MacDonald’s book The Vulnerable is for sale at Amazon.com. Betsy is a psychiatric R.N. holding positions as a Mental Health Director, where she lectures the public and health agencies. She also served as Director of Nursing at a hospital and has counseled and evaluated youth in school settings. Betsy MacDonald is a nationally published author with nonfiction cover stories. This true mystery has clairvoyance, hauntings, and gut-

This year’s event will be the 3rd Pasco Music Festival, and some of the volunteers that help to put this huge event together include Steve Luikart, Pasco School Board Vice Chairman, Louie Lord, a retired Pasco County Deputy, Rob Dunbar, and Freddy Mack, a retired NYC Detective. To enter the car show, there is a $25 car entry fee, and that includes two general entry wristbands to the concert and a dash plaque. People can begin to set up their cars at Safety Town as early as 10 a.m., with the car show beginning at noon. The first 100 cars will get in for this event, and the

If you’d like to register ahead of the event, stay tuned to the Pasco Music Festival’s website and facebook page, as they will have registration forms available that you can easily print from home. A member of the Car Show Committee said, “You can register at the event if there’s room! We only have enough space for the first hundred cars, so registering early is recommended. It’s going to be a great event!” Joey Dee & The Starliters are Headlining! This year, Joey Dee & The Starliters is headlining the Pasco Music Festival, and it’s going to be a great time! Joey Dee & The Starliters have

been a part of the music scene since the late 1950s and truly made their mark when they made the hit, “The Peppermint Twist” in 1961. Other musical guests include Lola & The Saints, performing Doo Wop and Oldies, while Karen Kallin, also known as “Little Miss Dynamite” will earn her nickname by singing and dancing to some of everyone’s favorite tunes. Currently Alexa is a sophomore at the University of South Florida majoring in Marketing. The Key is Education If you are retired or are nearing

retirement, then you need to know how to protect your money and understand how tax laws will affect your retirement. Often, there are legitimate adjustments that can be made now to reduce tax liabilities. “If clients are already collecting social security when they come to us, they want to know how they can reduce or eliminate taxes on not only social security income, but their overall taxes as well,” says Ed Rizzotto. “A major concern today and what I believe will be a concern for years to come for pre-retirees and current retirees is how to obtain “Guaranteed Income for Life” from your retirement and non-retirement plans. Unfortunately many employer sponsored plans and individual IRAs do not offer this benefit when you retire. We will show you how to put some things in place now that will enable you to set up lifetime income down the road. This is income you will never outlive…similar to a pension. We spend many hours with our clients to put sound plans in place by sharing ‘real time’ tax, income and social security analysis through some of the most sophisticated software. We want our clients to leave our office with a better understanding on what their income
needs will be in retirement, and how to control, reduce or possibly eliminate taxes.” As part of an overall financial plan, people should also have an estate plan to provide an easy transition of their assets when they pass on. Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group takes a team-oriented approach to tax, retirement and estate planning. Their staff will work with their client’s attorney to achieve their client’s goals. For example, the beneficiary designations on a client’s IRA could impact their estate plan so Mr. Rizzotto welcomes discussions from their estate planning attorney. If you do not already have an attorney, Mr. Rizzotto can refer you to an estate planning attorney. Martha V. Evans from Hitchcock Law Group frequently meets with clients in the Trinity office to review Wills and Trusts. Attorney Evans can help you make sure you plan is up to date and Ed Rizzotto’s staff will make sure your accounts and beneficiary designations coordinate with your estate plan. Concierge Level Service While taxes are a large part of The Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group, the majority of their clients also utilize the
Trinity Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles
firm’s other services including investments, retirement planning, long term care, annuities, life insurance, wills and trusts. Ed says, “Clients like the opportunity we provide to get everything taken care of in one place.” “When people come in to see us,” says Ed, “the first thing we do is dedicate one to two hours to complete an overall review that covers the last couple of years, including going over their tax returns in detail, studying their portfolios, and discussing their important concerns to determine how we can help them. Then, at a followup appointment, we present a thorough plan for them. “Saving on taxes, reducing or eliminating taxation on social security and protecting the financial wellbeing of a spouse after another’s death – those are things that my clients are concerned about. Today, people also want alternatives to the low interest rate environment provided by CDs and money market accounts.” Rizzotto explains that being involved with his clients in all the key areas of tax returns, insurance needs and investments allows his team to keep a keen eye on each client’s bottom line. “We’ve had people who had other advisors and financial planners who convinced them to make changes, not aware of the tax impacts. To me, the tax return is the most important document the client owns, that’s why it is the first thing we look at when the client meets us for their initial appointment. If there is an
investment or change that could cause a taxable event, we know that up front.” Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group’s area of expertise over the years has been working with retirees, but they also work with clients of all ages in the area of retirement planning. “You’re never too young or too old to start saving for retirement,” says Rizzotto. “We have found that many people we meet who are still working have changed jobs about every five to seven years, and many of those people left their retirement plans at their old employers (i.e. 401k, 403b, 457, and TSP plans, etc.). Many of these plans can be rolled over to individual IRAs or Roth IRAs, thus giving the client more control and the ability to have someone to advise them. We feel it is imperative for those people ages 59–1/2 or older who are still employed to become educated on a very significant act signed into law by congress over ten years ago that changed the rules governing these employer sponsored plans, what their options are, and what they can do to prepare for their family’s financial future.” Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group has 2 locations: 3030 Starkey Blvd. at the Florida Design Consultants Center in the Long Leaf community of Trinity; and 1034 Belcher Road S. in Largo. Genesis Preparatory School student wins at Inernational Science Fair grow from 18 months to 18 years in the Genesis family. Students admitted to Genesis Prep demonstrate the ability and motivation to succeed in a rigorous academic environment. Genesis Prep focuses on both academics and creating well-rounded students. For example, 100% of GPS graduates attend college, most with academic scholarships to the university of their choice. Art, music and physical education classes are an integral part of the daily curriculum, and a robust sports program allows students to compete against other high schools in the

Genesis Prep has small class sizes, offers daily tutorials at no charge, and their rigorous academic program includes honors classes, Advanced Placement classes, and dual enrollment at three local colleges. Academic performance records, test scores, teacher recommendations, personal interviews, and other assessment tools, help in the admission acceptance process. “Massages” Continued from page 1 American Massage Therapy Association, and is Nationally Board Certified. Karla’s massages can be done anywhere – at home, poolside, or at the office. Most of her clients choose the room in their house that offers the least distractions, and there she creates a wonderful environment for massage. She also takes the time to really speak to her clients before their massage to learn more about them and any physical discomfort or problems they have, so that she can create a therapeutic massage that will be most beneficial to each individual. Lindsey from New Port Richey says, “If you are looking for the best massage, then look no further than Karla, she is a rare find. Once you have a massage from Karla, you will look no further, that I will guarantee!” Massage Services that Improve Your Life “Your Health is your Wealth” is the philosophy at Barkdoll Massage Therapy, and that is why Karla
takes the time to really find out what kind of massage you prefer, whether it’s a Swedish massage or a deep tissue treatment for chronic pain, Karla’s massage will make a difference in your life. Karla offers a wide range of affordable massage therapy styles and packages. If you are looking for a traditional massage, Swedish massage treatments are designed to improve circulation, reduce stress and to relieve muscle tension. Hot stone massages also are popular. Warm stone therapy, which is the art of using heated stones in combination with a Swedish massage, is a great method of massage used to dissolve muscle tension and induce deep relaxation. Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic treatment designed to ease the pain and discomfort associated with chronic pain. Karla says, “During deep tissue massages I use trigger points to specifically find the places where the work needs to be done.” Deep tissue massages can help people who live with painful conditions live a fuller life. Another style of massage that Karla offers is sports massage and injury rehabilitation. This style of massage combines the benefits and style of a
deep tissue massage with stretching, which can improve the range of motion in joints. Whether you are healing after a car accident or are suffering from chronic pain associated with a medical condition, this kind of massage can be extremely beneficial. One of Karla’s clients from Trinity said, “I have had the pleasure of having Karla as a massage therapist for the past six years and it has always been an enriching and healing experience. She is knowledgeable, professional and a kindhearted person and I have no hesitation in recommending her service. She has hands of gold!” Prenatal massages are a fantastic way to pamper the mom-to-be while easing some of the side effects of pregnancy. Specially designed massage table pillows create a comfortable position just for a woman during this time, so that pregnant moms can safely enjoy their massage. Aromatherapy is proven to aid in relaxation, and Barkdoll Massage Therapy offers a variety of essential oils and
scents that can be used in collaboration with any other style of massage. Most often used with a Swedish massage, aromatherapy oils are applied by Karla during your massage to enhance the massage experience. One local couple wrote, “We all have very busy schedules and it saves us time and stress to have Karla come right to our home. My husband has chronic pain and her weekly massages help him tremendously. Whether you just want a great stress reliever or you have a medical condition I would highly recommend Karla!” If you are looking for a fantastic way to improve morale at work, how about offering your employees a corporate seated massage? This is a fully clothed, seated massage that can be
done right at the office. This style of massage focuses on the back, neck, shoulders, scalp, arms and hands. What a great way to let your employees know how much you care about them! My Massage with Karla Scheduling my massage turned out to be a breeze because Barkdoll Massage Therapy is one of the only places that offers evening massage appointments. It was all very easy for me since I wasn’t going to have to worry about driving anywhere or a babysitter for the kids! I simply picked out a quiet room in the house, sent the kids outside to play with my hubby, and got ready to enjoy my massage. Karla, a true professional, arrives right on time bringing everything she needs with her. She takes the time to ask about any injuries you may have suffered in the past, and current complaints that she needs to be aware of. Karla and I decided that a combination Swedish and deep tissue massage would be most beneficial for me. Karla put on what I like to call “massage music,” and spoke to me about what she was going to do before she began. To my surprise, I was even more relaxed because I was at home. I
enjoyed the entire hour instead of wondering how many minutes had passed, or wondering about the kids. I felt safe, pampered and well cared for. After my massage, I felt like a softened stick of butter, and I was able to just put on my slippers instead of my shoes! Massage can make one feel more centered, and can even change one’s outlook. Following my massage with Karla, I felt great for days and my entire family could see what a difference it made for me both physically and emotionally. The best thing about Barkdoll Massage Therapy is how affordable it is, making it possible to benefit from theapeutic massage on a regular basis. Barkdoll Massage Therapy is an entirely mobile massage therapy business that comes to you. Karla Barkdoll (License # MA47546) is available 7 days a week, from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. To schedule an appointment or to request more information about massage packages, corporate events or gift certificates, call (727) 372- 6389 or email Karla Barkdoll at barkdollmassagetherapy@yahoo.com
