Every Veterans Day, the nation honors the brave men and women who risk their lives to protect our country and the freedoms we cherish. Social Security honors veterans and active duty members of the military every day by giving them the support they deserve. A vital part of that is administering the Social Security disability program. For those who return home with injuries, Social Security is a resource they can turn to for disability benefits. Social Security’s Wounded Warriors website is at www.socialsecurity.gov/woundedwarriors. The Wounded Warriors website has answers to many commonly asked questions, and shares other useful information about disability benefits, including how veterans can receive expedited processing of disability claims. Benefits available through Social Security are different

from those available from the Department of Veterans Affairs and require a separate application. The expedited process is available to military service members who become disabled while on active military service on or after October 1, 2001, regardless of where the disability occurs. Even active duty military who continue to receive pay while in a hospital or on medical leave should consider applying for disability benefits if they’re unable to work due to a disabling condition. Risky Listening Habits Threaten Hearing in Younger Generations The Sertoma Foundation of Florida is sharing important information with the Tampa Bay area that concerns long-term hearing and health challenges that can create a lifetime of problems for younger people. According to Valerie Laberta, a freelance medical writer, today’s modern society is posing a serious threat to the younger generations. Too much use of earbuds, exposure to

loud volumes and concerts, and excessively loud music in clubs can cause long-term injury to ears and hearing, and pose serious threats to ones health. In her article “Address Youth Risky Listening Habits to Prevent a ‘Deaf Generation,” Ms. Laberta noted that the World Health Organization (WHO) has already raised a red flag, stating that “some 1.1 billion teenagers and young adults are at risk of hearing loss due to the unsafe use of personal audio devices, including smartphones and exposure to damaging levels of sound. Quantifying the global breadth of hearing loss, WHO reported that 360 million people have moderate to profound hearing loss, but estimates that half of all cases of hearing loss are avoidable.” It has already been found that the prevalence of tinnitus is now higher in teens than in the general population at more than 54 percent, much higher than experts expected, which was about 30-40 percent until extensive testing showed a much higher number of teens effected. While headphones are better to use than earbuds, the concern is with the number of hours listening to music at unsafe volumes. Labera’s article, which appeared in the October

2016 issue of the Hearing Journal, scientifically addresses the escalating danger of risky listening habits to younger generations and provides background information that may be helpful to parents concerned about the long-term effects on their teens and younger childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hearing. Wheelchairs 4 Kids’ Wheely Winter Christmas a Great Time! Winter the Dolphin and Santa Claus were highlights for the 5th annual Wheely Winter Christmas event. On Friday evening Wheelchairs 4 Kids sponsored a special event with their “Wheel Kids” to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. The evening began with the kids and their families having dinner at the Palm Pavilion. Ken Hamilton, owner of the Palm Pavilion donates dinner for all of the families every year! The kids also were able to visit and interact with dolphins Winter, Hope and Nicholas. The night ended with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus giving presents to the children. One of the families in attendance was Tom and Mindy with their son, Hunter, who has spina-bifida. Hunter received an adaptive bicycle to increase leg strength and stamina from the organization two years ago. Hunter was able to interact with Winter during the night's occasion. Hunter remarked, “He was very soft. And I got wet from head to toe!” Wheelchairs 4 Kids is a nonprofit organization dedicated to pro-

viding equipment for children with mobility challenges. Wheelchairs 4 Kids also has fundraising benefits such as Jail and Bails and charity auctions. The organization plans other inclusive events throughout the year, including attending WWE events and Washington Nationals baseball games. Wheelchairs 4 Kids’ Executive Director, Madeline Robinson, commented about the occasion. “Our kids love Winter so much! Some of them have braces that are made by the same company that made Win-

ter’s tail. They love spending time with the inspiring dolphin!” The Clearwater Marine Aquarium and Wheelchairs 4 Kids have collaborated on this event for five years. “We are honored to host the Wheelchairs for Kids families at Clearwater Marine Aquarium. With an election year behind us, and a new President coming into office, there will be tax changes and people are very curious in understanding what will change and how it will affect them. Even capital gains now pay the extra 3.8%,” explains Marcus. “Trump proposes cutting the tax brackets to 12%, 25%, and 33%. Plus, he would eliminate Obamacare’s 3.8% net investment income tax. The top ordinary rate would be 33%, with the top capital gain and dividend rate 20%. Itemized deductions would be capped at $200,000 for married couples.” Marcus explains that big tax cuts for businesses are proposed for the upcoming years. “Corporations currently pay 35%. Trump has said he would cut it to 15%, and eliminate most business deductions. LLCs, partnerships and SCorporations would have significant changes too, possibly even paying the same 15% rate as corporations. Of all the proposed tax changes, this one seems the most unlikely. It could mean someone taxed on flow-through business income at 39.6% or 43.4% could see their tax rate slashed to 15%.
