From The Editor Alexis Selby Thank-You to All Who Responded! I would like to start off by saying a gigantic thank-you to all of our wonderful readers, who have so warmly welcomed us into the neighborhood and took the time to write us and let us know what they thought of our first publication. Since our paper hit mailboxes, we have had a tremendous response from our readers, who have had only great things to say; and the emails and letters keep on coming – this really means a lot to us. After putting all the names of the people who responded in a random drawing, we have selected two winners. In no particular order, the winners are Nancy Smith and Trudi Segal. Both Nancy and Trudi will receive 2 tickets each to Big Cat Rescue, in addition to a $25 visa gift card, which they can use at their favorite restaurant if they so wish. Take a look at what they had to say about the Carrollwood Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles:

Reader Nancy writes, “I just received my edition today, and loved it! I live in Carrollwood and thought the publication was very classy and informative. I am looking for a roofing company, so the article on Arry's was helpful. I will call them for an estimate. Thank you.” “What a wonderful paper,” writes Trudi. “I enjoyed reading everything. My favorite article was about Big Cat Rescue. I was there recently and this reminded me that I want to go back again soon. I would like to read about new restaurants in Carrollwood. I went to two just this weekend – one where the old Friday’s was and one next door to that. Thank-you and good luck.” Thank-you Nancy and Trudi for the kind words; and, thank-you to everyone who took the time to write us. We really enjoy hearing what you have to say, and encourage you to continue writing us and letting us

James Copeland - Celebration of Retirement Join retiring Chamberlain High School teacher James Copeland on Sunday, May 19 at 7 p.m. as he celebrates 24 years of dedicated teaching. Anyone who sang under Jim Copeland at Chamberlain is invited to attend. The celebration will be hosted by the church, Greg Bowlus-'81, Sue Dunnam Raines-'81, Marty Bearss-'71, and Louise Root Bearss.

A Few Personal Words From Jim Copeland Since this is probably my last Music Worship Service, I would like to have my students from Chamberlain High School in attendance and have them sing “The Lord Bless You and Keep You” with my Forest Hills Choir that night. It was 55 years ago, when I was a 22 year old, fresh out of college, looking for a job as a prospective teacher, when the Principal of Chamberlain High School called to tell me that he had a choral position open. I talked to him that afternoon and began teaching the next day. I stayed at Chamberlain for 24 years. My college choirs had used “The Lord Bless You and Keep You” to close every concert, so I did the same thing. For 24 years, we closed every concert with this work. When I

left Chamberlain in 1982 to become Supervisor of Secondary Music, I really missed having a choir. Bonnie, my wife, had been an Organist at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church since the early 70’s. The Pastor at Forest Hills asked me to help him out by serving as the Interim Choir Director for a few weeks. I stayed 30 years! I plan to retire from the church in August, 2013. The Celebration will take place at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, located at 709 W. Linebaugh Avenue in Tampa.

Community News Briefs This Is Why He Runs – A Father’s Promise “Why do I run,” asks father Matt Melnick? “I run because I am inspired by my daughter, who is growing up into a young lady before my very eyes; always refusing to be defined by anything but her glowing spirit and stubborn determination, no matter what anyone else says or does; regardless of what obstacles try to stand in her way, squeezing every last drop of blood, sweat and tears out of each day, to make sure that she lives her life on her terms. That is why I run! Won’t you come with me?” “Nothing can stop me,” Melnick says, “until there is a cure. It’s all I do everyday because it’s all I can do.” To talk with Tampa father of two and Corbett Prep technology teacher Matt Melnick, running is not an option; it is a responsibility. After his thirteen-year old daughter was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease three years ago, Melnick’s natural instinct as a father was to take control and make everything right for Abby. Frustrated and unable to control the disease, Melnick turned to Team Challenge of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). Team

Challenge is an endurance training and fundraising program and a place where Melnick could find strength, purpose, and support in dealing with this his daughter’s condition. Both Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are inflammatory bowel diseases. Crohn’s Disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the the digestive tract, or gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The disease is more commonly found in the colon and ileum, but can affect any area of the digestive tract. Colitis is the inflammation of the large intestine (colon). After training by himself and joining the Central Florida team from Orlando, he ran his first half-marathon for CCFA in the Virginia Wine Country. Meeting patients, other parents like himself, family members of patients, and other passionate people committed to the cause, provided energy, motivation and lasting friendships. And through social media such as Facebook and Twitter, the natural bond among these friends affected by these diseases is nurtured all year long. Melnick is now a Mentor in the newly formed Team Challenge Tampa – eight runners and a coach training for

the June 8 marathon in Chicago. Melnick hopes to spread awareness of the opportunities to join Team Challenge Tampa and garner the financial support he needs to run in Chicago and raise vital funds for research. Chicago will be his 5th halfmarathon in three years, at which point he will have raised over $50,000 towards finding a cure for Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis. Melnick’s relentless effort and commitment to finding a cure for Abby and others who suffer with these debilitating diseases is evidenced by these accomplishments. But Melnick still has work to do. “I am running for my daughter Abby who courageously lives a life full of a spirit that inspires. She may have Crohn's Disease, but it does not have her. I promised her I would run until she is cured, and that is what I am going to do,” says Melnick. The goal for each race is $10,000, and he has less than two months left. Visit www.ThisIsWhyIrun.com for more info or to make a donation. To contact Melnick, email mattymel@mac.com or call (813) 230-4042.

bett Preparatory School of IDS looking out at the water lilies in the pond and painted them on their Monet–inspired canvases. They observed live models dressed as ballerinas and imitated the style of Degas. Lying on their backs under tables, they painted just as Michelangelo did when he created his masterpiece on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The masterpiece art unit is a PreK3 tradition at Corbett Prep that incorporates the International Baccalaureate theme “How We Express Ourselves through the Arts.” By imitating the diverse styles of master artists, the students learn that there are many forms of art, that thoughts and feelings can be expressed through art, and that personal experience may influence the creation and interpretation of art. “The students learn, for example, Monet was inspired by nature, while Degas was motivated by movement,” says PreK3 teacher Leah Gucciardi. “Students also learn there are different ways to express themselves.” PreK3 teachers Leah Gucciardi, Aimee White, and resident Stephanie More selected a variety of artists from the Renaissance through modern times to provide experiences for the young artists to use many different tools and mediums – oil pastels, paint, markers,

Civitan Club Helps Local Family in Need On Saturday, April 20, the North Tampa Civitan Club took part in the annual Tampa Paint Your Heart Out Event and did what they always do each year – paint. The home selected for this event was in the Sulphur Springs Area of Tampa and met all the requirements for this charitable contribution. With club members and friends, the house had a total of 15 eager scrapers and painters and the homeowners who expected them were a little surprised – in a good way – to see 15 ready-to-go-workers on their doorstep bright and early at 8 a.m. All pre-work was done, and with supplies at hand, the “painters” got busy and took positions around the house as not to get in the way of another worker. While the painting was taking place, the owners stayed outside with the painters for a majority of the time, encouraging them and thanking them for all of their work. “The owners were very appreciative, and when we finished the wife gave each of the painters a hug and a personal thank-you,” says Benjamin, member of the Civitan Club. The North Tampa Civitan Club meets the first, third and fifth Friday of every month at 7:30 a.m. for a breakfast meeting at the Piccadilly, located at 11810 N Dale Mabry Hwy. in Tampa. Guests are always welcome. For more information please contact the Civitan Club at (813) 215-0500.

Save Time and Money with Grout Tech By Kim Thomas Before you spend thousands of dollars remodeling and re-tiling your bathroom or kitchen be sure to call Grout Tech for a FREE estimate on cleaning or repairing old dingy tile and grout. Grout Tech can breathe new life into your existing tile work, making everything shine like new at a fraction of the cost. Grout Tech is a family owned business serving Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco Counties. With over ten years of experience in the industry, Grout Tech specializes in cleaning and sealing tile and grout, recoloring grout, re-caulking showers and tubs, and repairing grout and broken tiles. Grout Tech will renew existing grout and tile to its original beauty by cleaning and maintaining the tile and grout lines. John Cole and his wife were ready to re-tile their entire bathroom before calling BJ at Grout Tech. “Our bathroom tile was over 40 years old it was looking grungy and very dull. We called Grout Tech and we are extremely pleased with our results!

With the help of Grout Tech, even the dirtiest and oldest of floors can be restored and renewed to their original beauty and splendor. We saved so much money by having the grout in our shower resurfaced and the tile cleaned and it looks brand new,” John shares. BJ is happy to set your appointment, come out and give you a free estimate. She stresses, “It is important for me to be respectful of our customers’ time so I will always arrive at the time we set.” In addition to always arriving in a timely manner, BJ says that they can keep their prices low because they are a family owned business and not a franchise. She explains, “What many people don’t understand is that franchises are often forced to charge more for their services because they have to maintain their franchise fees, but not with Grout Tech.” Not

only does Grout Tech keep its rates competitive, but the company will also honor any other quote as long as it is in writing. Because grout is a porous material, trying to remove stains is seemingly impossible. BJ explains, “Color sealing grout lines is one of the many services we offer and it is definitely the most effective way to create a perfect, new look.” Using a step-by-step process, Grout Tech begins by using a cleansing product to remove all bacteria and surface dirt with special machinery. They will then apply a color seal (of your choice). Once the sealer is applied the grout lines will be permanently protected from any stains.

For Ad Info Call (813) 928-6124 or Visit NeighborhoodNewsFL.com

The color seal also guarantees against cracking, chipping and peeling. Additionally, they will also cosmetically fix or replace chipped or cracked tiles, making your bathroom or kitchen tile like new again. Carla Bartow, a satisfied customer, shares her experience, “When BJ came out to give us a quote, she looked at the job and I could tell immediately that she knew what she was talking about. We had our family room, kitchen and dining room re-grouted. They also re-grouted the tub, shower and base of our toilet in our bathroom. They were fantastic! Not only were they professional and reliable but they also completed the job much faster than we had anticipated.”

Excellent Service Leads to Referrals Throughout the years, Grout Tech has grown through its many referrals from happy customers. People really appreciate that Grout Tech saves them time and money, but it is the excellent service provided that has really helped this business grow. Doris Strathearn, another Grout Tech success story, said that before calling Grout Tech her bathroom and guest bathroom shower and floor grout had deteriorated over time and the tiles were dull and stained. “The

tile was in good condition but it was stained so we had Grout Tech come out and clean them and they turned out very well.” They were so pleased that they have already referred Grout Tech to neighbors in their community. Grout Tech can also remove and re-caulk around sinks, baseboards, tubs and showers serving to clean up old moldy areas and keep your dry wall free from water damage. From old to new in just one day! To find out more about Grout Tech’s services or for a free estimate call BJ at 727-768-6828.

Forward Thinking Initiatives – Empowering Teens for Tomorrow’s Economy Founded in 2004 by Debra Campbell, Forward Thinking Initiatives is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to developing a more competitive emerging workforce by encouraging teens to unlock their inner creativity and develop practical, functional business models and products that have the potential to succeed in the current marketplace. “We tie everything together with the business element,” says Debra. By utilizing their individual strengths, each teen has the opportunity to create something unique, and Forward Thinking Initiatives is here to help your teen find out what they are truly capable of.

Summer Camps This year, Forward Thinking Initiatives is offering four innovative summer camps specifically designed to engage your teen’s creativity and dexterity and children ages 11 – 17 years are invited to partake on this opportunity of a lifetime. This summer, start

These presentations showcase the hard work that the campers have put in over the past week and allow parents to see what their child has developed. Debra says, “The most rewarding part of what I do is watching the presentations at the end of these camps and seeing the par-

“Hattie’s” Continued from page 1 the area. We each had a Hattie's Nest Egg breakfast sandwich - one with bacon and one with ham. Both excellent! We have never had this kind of sandwich before – with the egg on the outside. Very good bread, also. The fresh squeezed OJ was delicious, as was the house-roasted coffee. And, the Cinnamon Swirl Danish was outstanding – we thought maybe the frosting might have had a slight citrus flavoring to it. The staff was all very friendly, and the restaurant was very clean. We will definitely be back. Breakfast for 2 – including 2 egg sandwiches, 1 coffee, 1 juice and 1 cinnamon roll – was under $13!”

History of Hattie’s Owner Bruce Boore was born into the culinary way of life, coming from a long line of restaurant owners, and got his first job at the age of seven, working in his family’s restaurant – Aunt Hattie’s in St. Pete. Well-known throughout Florida, Aunt Hattie’s was a favorite among both locals and visitors, and by opening Hattie’s this past December, Bruce proudly follows in his family’s footsteps and brings the Hattie’s name back to the Tampa Bay area. Bruce runs

It is about the whole experience; a personable experience. It’s what people should be expecting.” Adapting the name of the original

Aunt Hattie’s, while still maintaining the philosophies and principles that made it so popular, Hattie’s Café and Beanery puts a modern twist on an old favorite and brings the area something exciting and new. Bruce says, “The philosophy of Hattie’s, we brought from the original Aunt Hattie’s; and that is the philosophy of buying fresh, local produce. Back in the day, everything was fresh and everything was local; it didn’t come any other way. We do the same thing here!” Because of this, when you eat at Hattie’s, you know quality

Delicious Fare In addition to a lifetime of experience growing up in the industry, Bruce also has formal culinary training, as a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York and showcases his skills by the originality of his hand-crafted menu items – such as his Grilled Alaskan sandwich. The combination of the avocado and cream cheese perfectly complement the flavor of the salmon and pair for a taste that is out of this world. Another great sandwich option is The Fourth Friday – with roasted turkey, cream cheese and sprouts. Tied in perfectly by the addition of spicy cranberry relish before being grilled to a light crisp, this sandwich has a sweet and spicy flavor that is fresh and tasty. If you are in the mood for breakfast I highly recommend you try the Breakfast Club, featuring three eggs grilled onto rye bread, topped with Cheddar and Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and your choice of two different meats – ham, sausage, or bacon. Just make sure you come hungry, because this sandwich ranges in size from 15 to 18 oz (depending on the meat you choose)! Hattie’s also has a selection of fresh salads, including the Ensalada Ranchero – a customer favorite. In this salad, fresh greens are topped with corn salsa, shredded cheddar cheese, tortilla strips, sour cream and salsa verde, making for a salad that is both filling and delicious. “We have really geared Hattie’s towards the healthy lifestyle,” says Bruce, as he talks about the importance of offering healthy selections, and using all-natural ingredients and buying or-

ganic as frequent as possible. Bruce also realizes that a lot of people are glutenintolerant, and thus recognizes the need for gluten-free options. He says, “We have an extensive selection of gluten-free menu items, and what we don’t bake here we get delivered from a certified gluten-free bakery.” Pastries are another top seller at Hattie’s, and they offer a wide variety of bakery favorites, including brownies, croissants, bagels, muffins, chocolate banana bread, biscuits, assorted cookies, scones, pies, biscotti, and their delicious French Toast Strada. Hattie’s also makes their own fresh-squeezed orange juice, which they squeeze for you right in the restaurant, and sells other healthy items such as oatmeal and honey.

He will roast the coffee beans exactly to your specifications and then will seal up the recipe and keep it safe until you wish to order more. Cheval Health Club has already taken Hattie’s up on this offer and now features their own unique coffee at their clubhouse. Hattie’s also offers catering for any size party, which is perfect for business luncheons and family events. They feature delicious daily specials, including fresh soups and sandwiches, all of which they feature on their website. On her last trip to Hattie’s, diner Nina writes, “Loved it! Atmosphere

was great; service awesome; coffee delicious; food delicious; pastries to die for! I love that they are green, shop local and try to use organic items. Hattie’s is the perfect stop for lunch and coffee!” Hattie’s Café and Beanery is located at 17695 N Dale Mabry Hwy. in Lutz. Their hours are Mon. – Thurs. 6:30 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.; Fri. – Sat. 6:30 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.; Sun. 7:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. For more information please call (813) 8982777 or visit their website at www.HattiesBeanery.com. For specials and weekly updates check them out on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/HattiesBeanery.

World-Class Coffee As the name implies, Hattie’s Café and Beanery is also a full-service beanery and has some of the best coffee in the Tampa Bay area. And, in addition to specially importing coffee beans from Portland Roasters, a company famously known for their coffee – which features a zero carbon footprint – Hattie’s also roasts their own coffee. “Coffee is a major part of what we do,” says Bruce. “We take a much more artisan approach to our coffee and still do espressos by hand. We also roast our own coffee.” Whether you like your coffee iced, frozen, or hot, or want an espresso, a French press or a decaf, Hattie’s is sure to have exactly what you are looking for. Hattie’s also serves up something that is nearly impossible to find anywhere else in the Tampa Bay Area, if not Florida, and that is their coldbrewed coffee. Brewed with only cold water, as the name implies, cold brew coffee features concentrated, supercharged flavor, and because the coffee bean is never exposed to heat, the bean doesn’t release oil or acid, making it a very low-acidic beverage. Bruce is constantly roasting new coffee creations and even offers cus-
