*We wanted to get this into the January issue but we didn’t have an exact count of donated bikes on press date* In 1999 Alex Cooks, owner of Carrollwood’s beloved BBQ restaurant Alex’s BBQ, started Alex’s Christmas for Kids foundation after purchasing a few bikes and giving them to some local, underprivileged kids for Christmas. Alex was one of 10 kids, and as you might imagine, money was tight growing up. Alex never got a chance to experience waking up on Christmas day and receiving a brand new bike himself, although he often dreamed about it. In adulthood he decided to turn his dream into a reality for children in his own backyard and since that day in 1999 Alex has literally helped raise funds for thousands of bikes to be donated for local kids! This year alone, Alex helped raise enough funds to give away 525 bikes! Alex’s Christmas for Kids receives donations from his loyal customers
throughout the year to continue this service to the community. One hundred percent of the proceeds raised are used to purchase new bicycles. In addition, Alex’s Xmas for Kids collects old bikes and donates those to God’s Pedal Power, another nonprofit organization dedicated to those less fortunate in our community. “We’re all very proud of the program and thankful to everyone who has given a donation so we can continue with our efforts. We know the children, as well as the schools are also very appreciative,” says Cooks. Alex’s vision for the program has been achieved and his kindness and generosity is passed along with every bicycle given away. He gives the kids and this community something they can believe in, and that’s exactly what Christmas is all about!

Pinwheel - The Art of Wellness Lifestyle By Pam Sica A healthy community is the ultimate goal sought by nurse coach, board certified, Geraldine Novy, BS, RN, NC-BC, which led her to create a unique business called Pinwheel - The Art of Wellness Lifestyle. Currently serving as a holistic nurse on a neurological telemetry unit (stroke and heart) at Florida Hospital Carrollwood, she was also privileged to be a part of Dr. Oz’s team when he was at Pepin Heart Institute providing physicals for local residents. Geraldine looks forward to sharing her knowledge and insights with others, supporting them to clarify their health goals, implementing and maintaining behaviors, attitudes and lifestyles that focus on optimum health. What’s more, she is in an excellent position to guide clients to appreciate food as medicine in their personal care of the whole self. wheel can help you to succeed! Geraldine studied at Duke Integrative Medicine and actively promotes the possibilities of decreasing the undesired impact of chronic conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes, digestive disorders, stress and cancer. Naturally, I was intrigued, since I have been personally managing my Multiple Sclerosis for the last fourteen years using a similar approach – to the extent that my “NoMSDrugs4Me” moniker has remained a guidepost for a more holistic lifestyle. It is true that you can reverse many of the diseases your body conjures up when you set it back in balance. According to Geraldine, “Diet and exercise are nature’s heavy artillery in defense of the body. Wellness starts with awareness.” Geraldine stated, “My work in healthcare is at the hospital. I health coach and make presentations on food as medicine as an inner work of social community and awareness. This is like having a fitness trainer to coach you on your optimal health vision.” By formalizing your goals, whether it is to feel and look younger, raising your en-
ergy level, riding a bike with your grandchildren, she will help you to “find your joy” and assist you in achieving your vision. This can be conducted one on one, or in the form of group presentations. By collaborating with other professionals, Pinwheel Presentations can inform a community or area businesses as to Geraldine Novy (L) and Cassandra Hector (R) how to live in the “Art of Wellness.” The Carrollwood Cultural Center is one venue pactful memories for participants, as they learn how whole foods bring for these presentations, which could healing and restoration to the body, also be given right in your business, while never compromising on taste.” club, church, synagogue, etc. Each lesson she gives thoroughly capCassandra Hector is one of these tivates her participants and is essential professionals with whom Geraldine to having happy children, families. collaborates. the key factor for health and wellbeing. Decreasing sugar, salt and stress are paramount for a life, long-lived in health. Stress is prominent in our lives today, and it can absolutely compromise our bodies when they are not given enough time to simply relax. Pinwheel believes that one sure root cause for stress is the state of our finances and offers financial coaching through a company in our community, helping you to create a manageable budget. Support is also available on debt relief, earning extra interest on your savings along with extra income, being properly protected, along with a plan for financial independence. Get-
ting your financial house in order can bring peace of mind for longer, deeper sleep, which permits increased absorption of nutrients for optimal energy. A lifestyle of stress, living paycheck to paycheck and surviving on fast food because it fits your budget is not living in health, as this contributes to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and metabolic syndrome to name a few. Pinwheel offers you trips to your grocery store to understand food labels, so you can make healthier purchases for you and your family. They also offer you support to clean out your pantries to make room for better nutritional choices in the household.

Bill Currie Ford – Tampa’s First Family of Ford standing tradition of participating in recognizing our military at MacDill Air Force Base as well as our Tampa and Hillsborough Law Enforcement officers. On Fridays red is worn by our team in support of the military as a way to Remember Everyone Deployed.”
By Alexis Selby A staple in the Carrollwood community, for the past 54 years Bill Currie Ford has been an integral part of Tampa Bay. So much more than just a car dealership, Bill Currie Ford is a community leader and in the past year alone has helped to raise over 200 thousand dollars for local charities and organizations. Not a month goes by, that they aren’t doing something to help raise money for the community; whether as a sponsor, a host, or through their generous donations. “The Currie Family understands the responsibility to our neighbors,” says Community Relations Manager Christy Vannette. “We are very invested in our community; they have supported us for so long so it is important for us at Bill Currie Ford to be good neighbors as well. It’s an honor to serve and support where we can.” Aside from their charity work, when it comes to vehicles, they are definitely leaders in this aspect as well. With one of the best selections of new, used and certified pre-owned Fords, Bill Currie Ford has a vehicle for every lifestyle and budget! Their huge showroom and oversized car lot is a testament to that! “We have the best prices, offer one of the best selections in all of Tampa Bay and have low rates and an extremely high customer service satisfaction rating; our customer satisfaction rating last year was 92,” says Jeff Camara, the General Sales Manager at Bill Currie Ford. Always putting their customers first, the Bill Currie team is dedicated to making sure their customers are always taken care of with the highest level of quality service, and listen to what their customers want, assuring they are getting the right vehicle for them. “We have the ‘whatever we can to make the deal for the customer philosophy,” says Tim Joslin, General Manager at Bill Currie Ford. “We never lose sight of the fact that buying a vehicle is a big decision. We will do whatever we can do to help you get into the right vehicle for you at the best price!” When it comes to experience and knowledge, the staff at Bill Currie Ford is sure to impress. “We have one of the most seasoned sales staff in the

This really is a great place to work.” When in the market for a new or used vehicle, there are many reasons to consider buying a Ford. “Ford truly is a quality vehicle,” says Tim. “It has surpassed anything that it used to be. The F 150 has been the #1 selling truck in the nation for 38 years in a row – that means something!” These reasons, among many others, are why when my husband and I were looking to buy a new truck we came to Bill Currie Ford. Comparing the differences between other makes and models of trucks and listening to what the salesman had to say, my husband discovered exactly what he wanted. We had such a positive experience, from the knowledgeable sales staff who were able to answer any and all questions we had, to negotiating the best possible price for a beautiful new Ford F-250, Lariat edition – we actually got one of the lowest prices anyone had paid in the nation at that time for that particular model.

knowledge on how to protect oneself from becoming a victim of crime – from cyber crime, to identity theft, to everything in between. It really was quite interesting and I, myself, definitely learned quite a bit of useful information on how to protect myself against such crimes. Local businesses, restaurants, vendors and other informational sponsors also joined in on the action to show their support for the Public Safety Fair and had booths lining the walls of the gymnasium, allowing visitors to browse amongst the vendors during breaks between speakers. My husband Matt and I also
joined in the fun, representing the Neighborhood News & Lifestyles; we met so many great people and it was nice to hear such positive feedback from our readers who get our magazines monthly. Breaking for lunch, guests enjoyed free food provided by Red Robin, Taco Bus and PDQ, as well as a delicious cake and other sweets from Whole Foods. During the breaks there were also raffles, where guests won some exciting prizes and
