Food has been at the heart of Christina and Giuseppe Volo’s relationship since the first day they met. After dining at a local restaurant up north, Christina’s friend noticed Giuseppe “following” them home from the restaurant! After staying on her cell phone with her Dad worrying, Christina realized that Giuseppe, who she’d seen eating at the same restaurant, lived in the same apartment complex as she did and was simply walking home like her. It wasn’t long before the two were dining as a couple and now, after eight years of marriage and two sons, there was little doubt this genuinely loving couple was meant to meet, and food would always be an important part of their lives.

Giuseppe was born in Sicily, Italy and was part of the Sicilian Army before he moved to the United States. His first job in America was as a dishwasher at his brotherin-law’s restaurant. He watched, learned and worked his way up from the kitchen, to management, to owning his own restaurant. The couple currently owns three upscale restaurants in New Hampshire, and decided to purchase Ragazzi’s Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria in January of 2014. It didn’t take long for the couple to decided Florida was the best place to call home, and they moved down here full time. Christina and Giuseppe have put their hearts into making the old Ragazzi’s into a place they are proud to put their name on, renaming it Volo Di Ragazzi’s.

raises, and trains smart and loyal guide dogs and provides them at no charge to people who need them. The school receives no government funding, so they’re counting on us to support healthy puppies and on-campus training for visually impaired students. The Walkathons are the biggest fundraiser of Southeastern Guide Dogs. Stacey has had two amazingly intuitive and devoted guide dogs from Southeastern, Discovery and Bravo. Bravo came into the family to retire Discovery (who lived out his life being doted on by Stacey and her family) and now it is Bravo’s turn to retire and take it easy, as he is getting too old to keep up with the diligent job of guiding a sight-impaired human. Stacey is in the process of getting a new guide dog, and as her friend, I know a little about how much training and care goes into these dogs and how their trainers really strive to match the right dog to the right person. This is a very deserving organization and we are happy to participate in the 2015 Southeastern Guide Dogs Walkathon. Please support our team as we support Southeastern Guide Dogs. By Kim Thomas When my friend Stacey Cataldo asked me to join her team for the 2015 Southeastern Guide Dogs Walkathon in St. Petersburg on Feb. 28, it was an instant yes! I know what a huge impact a guide dog makes for its owner and we are shamelessly asking for donations! Stacey and I met about 14 years ago and there isn’t much that can stop this gal from being fiercely independent – not even being legally blind. With her guide dog Bravo to assist her, Stacey will catch a cab to the airport and fly across the country to meet her fiancé, shop for her family, or meet up with friends. She even runs with her guide dog. These amazing dogs give the gift of independence and freedom to the sight-impaired. Stacey lost her sight during pregnancy at the age of 23 from diabetic retinopathy, but her independent nature did not disappear with her sight and that is why these dogs are so vitally important to the sight-impaired. It is their guide dogs that are truly their best friends, constant companions, safe keepers and their greatest means of independence. Southeastern Guide Dogs breeds,

PASCO KIDS FIRST Earns Accreditation From National Children’s Alliance Pasco Kids First has been awarded accreditation by National Children’s Alliance following an extensive application and site review process. As the accrediting agency for Children’s Advocacy Centers (CAC) across the country, National Children’s Alliance awards various levels of accreditation and membership to centers responding to allegations of child abuse in ways that are effective and efficient, and put the needs of child victims of abuse first. Accreditation is the highest level of membership with National Children’s Alliance and denotes excellence in service provision. Pasco Kids First was established in 1989 with the mission to assist in the protection of children from the devastating effects of child abuse and neglect providing services for 25 years to children and families. Pasco County had more than 5,500 abuse reports in 2014 and Pasco Kids First served 1,200 kids through child abuse assessments or

therapy services. As an Accredited Member of National Children’s Alliance, Pasco Kids First is dedicated to providing comprehensive, coordinated and compassionate services to victims of child abuse. Pasco Kids First is one of 17 accredited CACs in Florida. The agency will host a celebration on Tues., Feb. 24th, 11 a.m.–2 p.m. with tours and refreshments at the office, at 7344 Little Road in New Port Richey. Presentation by Sheriff Chris Nocco followed by a ribbon cutting with the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce will be held at 12 p.m. National Children’s Alliance awards Accredited Membership based on a CAC’s compliance with 10 national standards of accreditation to ensure effective, efficient and consistent delivery of services to child abuse victims. National Children’s Alliance updated these standards in 2010 to reflect the most recent evidence-based practices in the field of child abuse intervention and prevention. According to these standards, Accredited Members must utilize a functioning and effective

Multidisciplinary Team approach to work collaboratively in child abuse investigation, prosecution, and treatment. National Children’s Alliance also considers standards regarding a center’s cultural competency and diversity, forensic interviews, victim support and advocacy, medical evaluation, therapeutic intervention, and child focused setting. “As an organization/team of individuals dedicated to responding to child abuse, we recognize the importance of accreditation from National Children’s Alliance and supporting the Multidisciplinary Team approach. Accreditation not only validates our organization’s proven effective approach to responding to allegations of child abuse, but also provides consistency across the child advocacy center movement as a whole,” said Rick Hess, Executive Director of Pasco Kids First. “Pasco Kids First is to be commended for its excellent work serving victims of child abuse. As the national association and accrediting body for Children’s Advocacy Centers across the country, our goal is to ensure that every victim of child abuse has access to high quality services that result from professional collaboration,” remarked

Teresa Huizar, Executive Director of National Children’s Alliance. For more info about Pasco Kids First, visit www.pascokidsfirst.org or call Becky Bennett at 727-835-7962. FOSTER HOMES NEEDED: Be a Champion for a Kid! There are more than 3,500 dependent children in Pinellas and Pasco counties in need due to child abuse, neglect or abandonment. Many will need to live in a temporary foster home, and much help is needed to meet the growing need. When you open your heart and home to foster children, you open possibilities for them...you foster hope. To be a foster parent, you need to be at least 21, have appropriate housing and pass a background screening. You can be single or married, have a family or be an empty-nester. You’ll need to complete a home study and 24 hours of special training called Professional Parenting. You must have adequate space and be able to provide for your family now; although you will receive financial assistance to help care for the child, you cannot rely on this to pay your bills. For info on foster parenting, call the Eckerd Recruitment Line at 1-866-233-0790. (Story page 34.)

There is no better place than a beautiful master bath suite where you can recharge yourself. So shouldn’t your bathroom reflect your individuality? If you are considering updating your bathroom, you’ll want an experienced, licensed contractor who is reliable and affordable, and one who will turn your vision into your dream-come-true. You want someone like Chris Snyder, owner of Snyder Custom Bathrooms and More, who specializes in remodeling and renovation projects for your home and guarantees that you will receive quality, honest work from start to finish. Located out of Pasco County, Snyder Custom Bathrooms and More specializes in custom bathrooms, cabinet installations, fixture solutions and more. With a lifetime of experience in the construction business, Chris Snyder works side-by-side with his wife Faylee to bring you quality work at fair pricing that you can trust will last. Chris says, “When it comes to hiring a contractor for a home remodel or renovation, you want to make sure you are choosing someone that will walk you through every step of the process, keep you involved in the project and perform quality work that is long-lasting. Faylee and I work together on each individual project to ensure that our clients get exactly what they want by a team they can trust. We don’t subcontract and we always visit our jobsites together.” As a homeowner, it is your responsibility to make certain that a contractor is licensed and insured; always ask about licensing and check their credentials, because a faulty job could

10

end up costing you valuable time and money. Contractor Chris Snyder is both licensed and insured to perform contracting work in the State of Florida. Chris built his first house with his dad when he was eight years old and has been in the building business ever since, and has had his contractor’s license since 2004. It truly is his passion to provide beautiful custom designs for his clients that are not only aesthetically pleasing but durable and functional as well. Faylee, a native Floridian, says, “We work together as a team because we just love being together and completing a project makes us both feel accomplished. What better life is there than to work with your soul mate every day and be happy dong it?” Chris adds, “We love the Tampa Bay Area and are here to stay. Our customers never have to worry about us not being there for them if something goes awry. We make it our mission to provide the best finished project the first time around, but if anything isn’t up to standards, we get back to the project right away and find a solution, free of travel fees.” In addition to a one-year warranty on labor for any work performed, you will always receive honest work from Faylee and Chris. “Our name is our reputation and we only want the best to be said about our work,” says Chris. “Many of our clients appreciate that we work as a husband and wife team…many times we even become friends with our clients because we strive to build relationships with each person whose home we enter.” Chris specializes in custom bathrooms, but can do just about any kind of contracting work. Snyder Custom Bathrooms and More has a long list of references and works with you to find discounts through material vendors

that can be passed on to customers. Chris says, “I can get great discounts with the companies I use. We can usually find what the customer wants at a better price than they would get if they were doing the shopping on their own. If you order something that needs to be picked up, we even will get the material to your home for installation. We cover all the bases, from start to finish.” The Snyder Difference: In addition to honest, quality work from a licensed and insured construction expert, you receive a lesson in home upkeep and renovation projects when working with Snyder Custom Bathrooms and More. “We walk our clients through the process of what we will be doing to their house,” says Faylee. “During our initial consultation, we sit down with you and find out exactly what you are looking for. From there, we are able to tell you if your project is feasible or not. If a contractor is not willing to sit down with you and have a conversation with you about your style, design preferences and budget, then you should not use them! Many contractors will just

throw around numbers with you, you’ll agree on a bid and then start the work. We make a huge effort to educate our customers about their project from start to finish and we are flexible to meet their scheduling needs.” Tampa Attorney Paul Prezepis only uses Snyder Custom Bathrooms and More for house renovation and construction needs because he only wants the best for his home and family. Paul says, “The first time I ever used Chris Snyder for a significant project was actually at my parents’ house. They had a sunroom with a leak and I checked into a few different contractors’ estimates. I chose Chris because I could just tell he was the type of contractor that was truly honest. From my experience with contractors I have seen that most don’t take the time to walk you through the process. From the minute Chris walks in the door you get an overall sense of trust with the guy. He knew what the exact problem was, why it leaked and showed me the project plans. This was before I really knew Chris well, but I just knew he was the right guy for the job. Every guy that came over before Chris visited was your typical

contractor… not exactly sure what they’re going to do and with no set plan. What sold me on Chris’s work was that he explained his entire plan in detail. He went and above-and-beyond just patching the leak. He took off the entire strip of shingles down to bare wood for a true fix. Told us the right way it should be done and followed through. It has been a couple of years and the roof has not leaked

since. Now, I use Chris for any job I need done around the house. He’s a great contractor and now a great friend of mine.” More recently, Paul had Chris remodel his bathroom. “I was home the day he performed the work on the master bathroom of my home, so I watched him work. The guy just knows what he’s doing,” says Paul. “The bathroom looks fabulous now.

Chris is efficient with time and his clients’ money. He bids fairly and he’s honest - what more could you want from a contractor? He’s the whole package and his work is impeccable, which is the icing on the cake. All the intangible things that we don’t generally see in the industry, he sees it.” Customers Vicky and Ron say, “We had some grout issues with the tiles in both of our bathrooms. We found Snyder Custom Bathrooms and More in Neighborhood News & Lifestyles, so we contacted Chris and Fay. Suncoast Women’s Care, Gentle OB/GYN for Women by Women By Julie Kanehl If you’re looking for OB/GYN doctors who are knowledgeable, experienced, well respected, and bilingual to boot, then you should meet the doctors at Suncoast Women’s Care. Conveniently located at 2044 Trinity Oaks Boulevard, on the second floor of the Trinity Medical Arts Building, Suncoast Women’s Care has been a trusted facility “for women and by women” since 2002. Women of all ages love the approachable doctors and cozy atmosphere of Suncoast Women’s Care, and the excellent care provided there. When Wanda I. Torres, MD, FACOG, opened Suncoast Women’s Care, it was important to her to offer a facility where women would be seen by female doctors, saying, “We understand what it’s like to be the patient.” Her sweet personality and gentle approach with her patients has made Dr. Torres a local favorite for women of all ages who need care. From puberty through post-menopause, Suncoast Women’s Care is a provider that puts women first, regardless of where they are in their journey.

14

Malieri Colon-Rivera, MD joined Suncoast Women’s Care this past summer. Like Dr. Torres, she earned her degree and completed her residency at the University District Hospital in San Juan, affiliated to University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. Originally a Primary Care doctor, Dr. Colon truly felt a calling to become an OB/GYN doctor, and says having a background in Primary Care has come in very handy with her patients. Offering a comprehensive approach to OB/GYN care, Dr. Torres and Dr. Colon excel at taking their time with each patient, whether it’s an annual well visit, or a scheduled visit to discuss a concern. The doctors at Suncoast Women’s Care really take the time to bond and connect with their patients, while educating them on their many options from birth control to birth plans, and from understanding the importance of mammograms to questions about their monthly cycle. Additionally, Dr. Torres and Dr. Colon both perform gynecological procedures, both in office and at nearby hospitals like Mease Countryside and Morton Plant North Bay Hos-

pital. Smaller procedures can be done in office or right next door at the BayCare Surgery Center. Top Notch Gynecological Care Today, things like hysterectomies and the removal of fibroids can be done with less pain and in less time, and the best part is that it requires almost none of the recovery time that it used to. Using Robotic Assisted Surgery, the physicians at Suncoast Women’s Care combine their gentle approach with the very best in technology to help women heal quickly and get back to their busy lives. Often, the doctors at Suncoast Women’s Care can help patients avoid surgery by offering other therapies such as physical therapy for pelvic floor rehabilitation. The best part is that you won’t even have to go anywhere else. They have a physical therapist who offers biofeedback therapy right in their office. Dr. Torres says, “Some studies have shown that biofeedback therapy helps 85-95 percent of women.” Suncoast Women’s Care also offers urodynamic testing in the office. When a woman is having problems with pelvic

prolapse and/or urinary incontinence, it can be very personal and upsetting and it really helps to have doctors who understand and truly care. Sara said, “Dr. Torres and her staff are just simply amazing. I, unfortunately, was having a lot of problems with my period, Dr. Torres advised me

as to what my options were and I trusted in her completely. I had to take the proper steps to try to correct my issues. I had the hysteroscopic procedure right in her office. I was so glad that the she offers the procedure to be done in her office. Everyone was so comforting, even being as nervous I as was, it was very quick and I didn’t have any pain or discomfort after the procedure.” Another patient said, “I had the DaVinci Robotic Hysterectomy performed by Dr Torres at Mease Countryside Hospital...I am now a ‘new’ woman! Dr Torres is my Super Hero! What fantastic teamwork at the hospital in all phases of my surgical stay. Twenty-four hours after surgery I was ready to go home! I have been a patient of Dr Torres … for approximately eight years. I am most impressed that they truly listen to you plus being professional, knowledgeable, skillful and caring.” Obstetrics that You and Your Baby Can Trust Choosing a doctor to help you deliver is a big decision! Whether you’re just thinking about conceiving or you’re looking for a physician to help deliver your third or fourth child, the

physicians at Suncoast Women’s Care simply love delivering babies. Their patient, calm approach during your pregnancy and delivery will make the entire experience that much better. Delivering at Mease Countryside Hospital, where they have an incredible NICU for peace of mind, Dr. Torres and Dr. Colon are dedicated and experienced at making sure that your little one’s entrance into the world is in good hands. When you’re pregnant, it’s so important to have a group of professionals at the ready, just in case you have questions, symptoms, or any kind of concern. Dr. Torres and Dr. Colon work with each patient to develop an ideal birthing plan, so that everyone is on the same page. They can help you decide if an epidural is right for you, and discuss the possibilities of caesarean sections and where they come into play. Each pregnancy is different, and each woman is different, which is why Suncoast Women’s Care treats each individual patient with respect. For those women who prefer a natural birth experience, Suncoast Women’s Care is proud to have Karen Vaughn-Kerns, ARNP, CNM on staff as a Nurse-Midwife. The Key is Education If you are a retiree or nearing retirement, you need to know how to protect your money and understand how tax laws will affect your retirement. Often, there are legitimate adjustments that can be made now to reduce tax liabilities. “If clients are already collecting social security when they come to us, they want to know how they can re-

Unfortunately many employer sponsored plans do not offer this benefit when you retire. We will show you how to put some things in place now that will enable you to set up lifetime income down the road. This is income you will never outlive…similar to a pension. We spend many hours with our clients to put sound plans in place by sharing ‘real time’ tax, income and social security analysis through some of the most sophisticated software. We want our clients to leave our office with a better understanding on what their income needs will be in retirement, and how to control, reduce or possibly eliminate taxes.”

Concierge Level Service While taxes are a large part of The Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group, the majority of their clients also utilize the firm’s other services including investments, retirement planning, long term care, annuities, life insurance, wills and trusts. Ed says, “Clients like the opportunity we provide to get everything taken care of in one place.” “When people come in to see us,” says Ed, “the first thing we do is dedicate an hour of our time to complete an overall review that covers the last couple of years, including going over their tax returns in detail, studying their portfolios, and discussing their important concerns to determine how we can help them. Then, at a follow-up appointment, we present a thorough plan for them.” The Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group offers guidance to each investor based on their unique investment profile while focusing on their financial goals. “Many people are concerned with the economy right

Trinity Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

now and preservation of funds is very important,” says Ed. “Saving on taxes, reducing or eliminating taxation on social security and protecting the financial wellbeing of a spouse after another’s death – those are things that my clients are concerned about. Today, people also want alternatives to the low interest rate environment provided by CDs and money market accounts.” Rizzotto explains that being involved with his clients in all the key areas of tax returns, insurance needs and investments allows his team to keep a keen eye on each client’s bottom line. He says, “We’ve had people who had other advisors and financial planners who convinced them to make changes, not aware of the tax impacts. To me, the tax return is the most important document the client owns, that’s why it is the first thing we look at when the client meets us for their initial appointment. If there is an investment or change that could cause a taxable event, we know that up front.” Retirement Planning…Not Just For Retirees While The Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group’s area of expertise over the years has been working with retirees, they also work with clients of all ages in the area of retirement planning. “You’re never too young or too old to start saving for retirement,” says Rizzotto. “We have found that many people we meet who are still working

have changed jobs about every five to seven years, and many of those people left their retirement plans at their old employers (i.e. 401k, 403b, and 457 plans, etc). Many of these plans can be rolled over to individual IRAs or Roth IRAs, thus giving the client more control and the ability to have someone to advise them. We feel it is imperative for those people ages 59 1/2 or older who are still employed to become educated on a very significant act signed into law by congress over eight years ago that changed the rules governing IRAs, 401(k)s, 403(b)s and 457 plans, what their options are and what they can do to prepare for their family’s financial future.” The Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group is located in the community of Long Leaf in the Florida Design Consultants Center at 3030 Starkey Boulevard in Trinity. Leo’s Barber Shop is Where the Best Barbers Work! By Katie Thomas As far back as the 1800s, barbershops have become a ritual for men. The boys would stop in for a hot shave, haircut and some quality conversation with fellow comrades. Since the first outposts, barbershops have been a place to fraternize, catch up with local businessmen and get a clean cut in a relaxing atmosphere. Leo’s Barber Shop brings back the old-fashioned “shop talk” camaraderie and personalized, friendly service that keeps customers loyal. With two locations in New Port Richey, Leo’s Barber Shop brings back the feel of a golden-age barbershop and gives it a boost with modern-day convenience, and this barbershop isn’t just for men, women and children love Leo’s too! The barbers are talented, have interesting stories, and they embrace the art of barbering. Leo’s Barber Shop has deep roots in the area. The original Leo’s, on Madison Street in New Port Richey, was opened more than 36 years ago by Leo Lupo. Leo had an idea to

22

bring back the traditional barbershop, while incorporating a modern business model. Leo is considered a master barber and continues to work at the original shop to this day! In 2004, Leo sold his business to Steve VanPetten, who is the current owner for both shops and prides himself on keeping the values of old time barbershop traditions, which includes being an active community member and treating customers and the barbers who work for him with respect and care. Steve says, “The relationship between the barbers, the shop and myself, the owner, is the reason Leo’s is such a success. We take care of each other and our guests here.” The Shave Shop at Leo’s – It’s A Man’s World! The Shave Shop at Leo’s in Trinity is a classy spot to treat yourself to a hot towel shave. You will be sat in a comfortable leather lounge chair for comfort, receive a hot towel steaming for your face, get a boar bristle brush lather and get the closest shave you have ever had. A Precision Haircut for Everyone! Leo’s Barber Shop offers cut and style services for men, women and children. Enjoy a complimentary coffee while you wait, or set the kids up at the chalkboard wall for some doodling to keep them entertained. Leo’s offers cuts for the whole family because they don’t want to leave anyone out of the experience of a good quality barbershop. Leo’s offers basic haircuts, long haircuts, shaves, fades, flat top cuts, tapers and other styles to suit your personal taste. They’ve even had a Mohawk or two leave the shop! Steve works his hardest to give customers exactly what they want,

whether it is a simple and clean cut or something more edgy. Longtime customer Diego Garcia says, “I love this place! I have been coming to Leo’s for over 27 years, since I was a very young boy. In those 27 years, I have always gotten a great haircut. Not only do the barbers cut great, but they also treat you like family. Every time I walk through the door, we pick up right where we last left off and catch up. This is one of the most iconic shops in the area because the barbers are skilled and proud of their craft.” Community is important at Leo’s Barber Shop and over the years they

have been heavily involved in charities, community service and funding for schools and non-profit organizations. Leo’s helps out every year with the Red Apple Adult Training Center, the V.A. Project, the Shriner’s Circus, the Calvary Chapel and other local organizations. Steve says, “The important thing to me is that I am able to help out local people and charities in need through my business. It all comes full circle and if I am able to help, I always try my best to do the right thing.” Leo’s Barber Shop on Madison Street is holding a special promotion for police officers and firemen during the month of March––if you work as a firefighter or a police officer, your haircut is free! Check the website, leosbarbershop.com, for the details. Leo’s Barber Shop is a place for everyone. It is a place to meet new people, relish old friendships and build a relationship with your community members. Steve says, “I love the place! I mean, I know I own the place, but it is all about the barbers who work here

and the customers they serve. There isn’t a better group of people to know and call as friends. As the leader of this little community company, I couldn’t be more proud! We have become a family.” Leo’s Barber Shop has two locations in New Port Richey: the Trinity location is at 4110 Little Road and can be reached at (727) 372–7023; the Elfers location is at 4034 Madison Street and can be reached at (727) 848–9159. Come Out and Enjoy the 12th Annual San Gennaro Festa in Safety Harbor! By Julie Kanehl What do you get when you combine homemade Italian sauce, mouthwatering meatballs, handmade pasta demonstrations, cannoli and zeppoles dusted with sugar, pizzelle-making demonstrations, Italian entertainment, music and dancing, bocce courts, and thousands of excited guests? You get LIADO’s 12th Annual San Gennaro Festa in Safety Harbor! This will mark the 12th year that the remarkable ladies of LIADO (“Le Italo-Americane Di Oggi” or “The Italian-American Women of Today”) have put on the Annual San Gennaro Festa, so mark your calendars for Saturday and Sunday the 21st and 22nd of February, grab your closest friends and your appetite, and “andiamo!” LIADO’s San Gennaro Festa is held every year down at the Safety Harbor Marina, which is right next to the Safety Harbor Spa, making this lively street fair convenient to the entire Bay Area. The San Gennaro Festa is quite a big deal; in fact, people travel from all over Florida and beyond to come to this incredible and exciting event. Here’s a little history for you. San

Gennaro (or Saint Januarius) is the patron saint of Naples, Italy, so it makes sense that the original Feast of San Gennaro would take place there! When Italians settled in the United States they wanted to continue to celebrate the saint’s feast day, and so the Feast of San Gennaro has taken place each year in Little Italy, New York since 1926. Part street fair, part family reunion, The Feast of San Gennaro grew in popularity and now more than a million people gather there each year as a way to celebrate their shared Italian heritage, culture, and of course culinary superiority, I mean expertise.

From Little Italy to Safety Harbor, LIADO’s San Gennaro Festa has the same goal: To share and celebrate their Italian Heritage with the world. Celebrating in Florida in February to avoid that pesky hurricane season, LIADO’s San Gennaro Festa draws quite a crowd and is a wonder to behold. All for a Great Cause! LIADO’s San Gennaro Festa is actually a fundraiser that goes to support a great many local causes including The Alzheimer’s Association of Florida (Gulf Coast Chapter), Autism Speaks, Children’s Cancer Center, Children’s Cancer Research Group @ USF, The Safety Harbor Public Library, and many more. Additionally, through their scholarship program, LIADO has awarded more than $110,000 to deserving students who are dedicated to furthering their education. You Had Me At Meatballs! Let’s be honest, there’s nothing

quite like Italian cooking, and when it comes to meatballs, nobody does it better. I’m sure you make a decent meatball, but last year, the meatballs at LIADO’s San Gennaro Festa were so good, that they sold out of thousands of them in the first day. That’s what I’m talking about. I’m talking about meatballs worth waiting in line for, and I’m telling you, they’re making even more this year. Of course, this year’s Festa will offer a plethora of other Italian cuisine from Italian sausage and peppers to homemade pasta fagioli, not to mention the desserts – from cannoli to zeppoles (those are Italian doughnuts!). If you’re so inclined, you can even participate in one of the meatball or cannoli eating contests! There will also be live entertainment throughout the Festa! The Impacs will keep everyone on their feet, and Joey Dee will perform live on Sunday! Entertainment is definitely part of the Italian culture, and spontaneous dancing has been known to

12th Annual San Gennaro Festa will be held on Saturday, February 21st, 11 a.m.–9 p.m., and Sunday, February 22nd from 11 a.m.–7 p.m. at Safety Harbor Marina, 110 Veteran’s Memorial Lane. Children 12 and under are free, and tickets for adults are just $5. All for a great cause, LIADO’s San Gennaro Festa will be held rain or shine! For additional information about the event, please visit www.sangennarofesta.com. If you’d like to know more about becoming a member of LIADO, visit www.liado.net. erupt around the meatball booth in particular! Meet the Ladies Behind The Festa LIADO, The Italian-American Women of Today, was actually founded in 1993 by a group of women who wanted to preserve their heritage, share their culture, and ultimately promote a realistic and positive view of Italian-American women. Starting with less than 30 women, the group has grown to more than 150! Meeting once a month to learn and share things about their Italian heritage, these women have become like

extended Italian family to one another. With a focus on education, information and cultural preservation, topics include everything from immigration to getting to the bottom of certain pronunciations. Of course, as you can imagine, there are a lot of cooking demonstrations! Who do you think makes all of the meatballs for the San Gennaro Festa? LIADO, which is the only 100 percent Italian women’s organization of its kind in Florida, now has two meeting places to accommodate its members, one is in Dunedin and the other in New Port Richey. So, if

you’re an Italian-American woman and are interested in joining a group that truly gives back to the community, while preserving and reaffirming your heritage, you should think about joining! You can even sign up to join this incredible group of ladies at LIADO’s San Gennaro Festa this month! So, whether you’re going for the music, the fun, the meatballs or the cannoli, you should grab your friends and family and come on down to LIADO’s 12th Annual San Gennaro Festa in Safety Harbor.

Today’s Foster Parents Today’s foster families are skilled, valued partners who parent, nurture and advocate for children in their care, and who mentor and support the child’s birth parents. They leave lifelong impressions on children in their care and are privileged to positively impact the futures of children and families who live in our community. Today’s foster parents are business owners, soccer moms and retirees. By day, they teach school, sell real estate and work construction. By night, they read bedtime stories, help with homework and give hugs. They work as partners with birth parents, case managers, guardian ad litems, schools and judges to nurture, love and advocate for children in their care. Being a champion for a child in foster care means, as their foster parent, you help bring stability to their life during a time of trauma and help shape their future. placed in your home. They may share a bedroom with your child or another foster child of the same gender. They must have a bed of their own and cannot share a bed nor sleep on a cot or trundle bed. A foster child may not share a bedroom with any adult nor can the adult move out of their bedroom and sleep on the couch to make room. Does My Home Need to Pass Inspection? It is important that children

live in a safe and clean environment. During the home study process, you will be asked to have a health inspection done in your home. Your home must be free of potential dangers and risks. You must have working smoke detectors and fire extinguishers and, if you have pets, they must be current with vaccinations and not present a danger to children in your home. What Are The Physical and Emotional Requirements to Foster? Being a foster parent can be demanding, therefore you must be healthy and emotionally stable. You may be asked to complete a physical exam or provide medical clearance to help establish the state of your physical and emotional health.

What Are the Screening Requirements? Thorough background screenings are conducted on all prospective foster families, including Abuse Registry, local criminal and federal criminal clearances (fingerprinting). Background screenings and child abuse clearances are required for all household members. What Are the Financial Requirements? While you don’t have to be rich to be a foster parent, you must have adequate income to meet you own family’s needs. You can either own your home or rent. Foster parents are given stipends called “board rates” for the substitute care they provide; the amount of this varies by the age of the child. However, the monthly board rate you will receive is not income. During the home study process, you will be asked to show proof of income and financial stability. What About My Marital Status? Foster parents can be single, married, divorced or in a domestic partnership. How Do I Know When I’m Ready? You will know you are ready when your life and home are stable. “Stable” means that you are not about to move and you are not having financial, marital, physical or emotional difficulties. Your home must be in good condition and you must be ready to commit to 36 hours of pre-service training (if you’re married, both par-

recycled materials for curriculumbased projects. LOLA will be the only facility in Pasco County to follow the nationally recognized Mother Goose Time™ curriculum, which is uniquely designed to support a child’s socio-emotional, physical and cognitive development. In conjunction with this curriculum, which meets Florida’s standards for preschool curriculum, LOLA will focus on nutritional aware-

ness and sustainability, with children learning through hands-on experiences, such as tending to the facility’s organic garden. LOLA is currently enrolling students for Summer 2015 and will be offering a Grand Opening tuition special of 30% off the first month’s tuition and 10% off months two through six. Tuition will be competitive with other childcare facilities in the area.

“Volo Di Ragazzi’s” Continued from page 1 Christina says that with the help of their manager Brianna, they are fully staffed with top-notch employees. With a fresh crew, they have worked hard for good rapport, making sure to create a family atmosphere that makes everyone happy, from the staff to the diners. They revamped the décor and Giuseppe made the menu his own by bringing his own Sicilian recipes and using only the freshest ingredients. Your food is made-to-order at Volo Di Ragazzi’s because Giuseppe refuses to settle on anything less than fresh food. It is well worth waiting a couple of minutes longer! Giuseppe makes his own dough and a savory, slightly sweet sauce from scratch. Their house dressing is made from scratch – even their bread crumbs for their meatballs are made from their own homemade bread. Because your food is made when you order it you can ask for your food just the way you want it. If you want to add lemon to your made-to-order Alfredo sauce, all you have to do is ask! Do you love cheese in the crust of

your pizza? Giuseppe will add it right after he hand tosses your dough; just let your waiter know. If you’ve never had Volo Di Ragazzi’s Chicken Marsala, I recommend it. It’s made with an imported Marsala wine that makes for a flavorful sauce. Like all entrees, it’s served with your choice of pasta and soup or salad. Christina says that their vegetable lasagna gets rave reviews even from meat lovers, and is a great lower carbohydrate alternative. It’s made of eggplant, spinach, zucchini, summer squash, and mushrooms layered in mozzarella Parmesan cheese, tomato sauce and a bit of Alfredo sauce. Giuseppe’s cousin has been training in the kitchen and has created a version of chicken wings that he seasons, bakes, and then fries to perfection. He can double bake them if customers are on a gluten-free diet or prefer them that way. You can also always ask for gluten free pasta at Volo Di Ragazzi’s. Ed and Joann Pasco come to Volo Di Ragazzi’s every time they can. Joann says, “It’s the best Italian restaurant in all of Pasco County. Brianna knows exactly what I ordered last time. Tonight I’m having a cannoli too, because my neighbor who

In February they are featuring Chicken Farcitto, breaded chicken cutlet wrapped with ham, provolone, and spinach and then served with a Marsala sauce. The seafood special for the month is shrimp and scallops in Marsala sauce. Their homemade sangria changes weekly and

Whether you like thin crust or stuffed crust, Giuseppe hand tosses your pizza to order in true Sicilian style at Volo Di Ragazzi’s. Christina often has customers share their favorite sangria recipes for her to make (and many times even name after them!). Just like Volo Di Ragazzi’s caters to your taste buds, they also make sure they have a variety of drinks options available. They have beer and wine to pair with your meal and wine-based liquors can be mixed to make delicious martinis, mojitos and margaritas. “Maharajh” Continued from page 1 acupuncture, cosmetic acupuncture and even cold laser fat reduction therapy. Patients love the new downtown space with its modern New York loft appeal and its impeccably clean, yet cozy treatment rooms. The spacious waiting area establishes a peaceful, stress-free atmosphere, and as always, the Maharajh staff is professional, attentive and friendly. Owners, Dr. Lisa Maharajh, DOM, AP and David Maharajh, Medical Herbalist, have always had a passion for helping people. They have created a practice that focuses on educating people and creating healthier options when it comes to health care. Dr. Lisa has been practicing for more than eight years and has extensive training in Functional Medicine with a group call the A4M (American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine). Both she and Dr. Laura Kowal, DOM, AP attended East West College of Natural Medicine in Sarasota for seven years and earned a Masters degree in Oriental Medicine. The doctors at Maharajh

Acupuncture are well trained in hormone balancing and diagnosing thyroid conditions using the most recent natural medical therapies, including Saliva and Blood Testing, along with the medically proven process of Acupuncture, which stimulates specific acupuncture points in your body to eliminate any blockages and increase circulation so your body can heal. Instead of covering or disguising symptoms, acupuncture is aimed at eliminating the problems and creating a healthier body overall. Acupuncture has been medically proven to relieve pain symptoms in your back, head, and extremities, ease the effect of allergies, balance your hormonal system, and even help with migraines, anxiety, arthritis, women’s health and many, many more. It’s not all about needles either, although they don’t hurt at all. They can also use magnets, cupping and lasers if necessary. If you’re on the fence about acupuncture, you should think about making an appointment for a free consultation! It’s a great opportunity to find out if acupuncture may be for you. During this appointment, they can also check to see if your insurance covers acupuncture treatments, which

Kowal will be on hand to talk about their upcoming lecture series, which will be a wonderful opportunity for people to learn about acupuncture and oriental medicine. Additionally, David Maharajh will be speaking about the safety and importance of using herbs as medicine instead of harsh, and often unnecessary, chemicals. Many people turn to Eastern Medicine when Western Medicine has failed them. This happens when patients can’t find relief from chronic

pain, or when their doctors don’t have any non-invasive answers. Dr. Lisa says, “Many people come to me as a last resort after suffering for many years. I don’t want to be the last resort, I want to be the first resort!” She adds, “I want to be the first person that they call because I can treat them and I believe I can treat them better.” Once people learn about what acupuncture can do for them, and experience the results, they are impressed. Patient Mark Rexroat said, “I highly recommend Maharajh Acupuncture. I am thankful to have made a connection with them at this point in my life. My journey with them has been nothing but good, I was skeptical about acupuncture at first, but not anymore.” During their upcoming educational lecture series, which will happen once a month at their office, guests will be able to learn more about Oriental Medicine and find more ways to live a cleaner, healthier lifestyle. The Herb Shoppe The professionals at Maharajh Acupuncture are dedicated to helping people live healthier lives, and their

goal is to treat the cause of the condition so that it doesn’t return, instead of covering the condition with chemicals that only mask the problem. David says, “At our herbal pharmacy we are tailor making each prescription to fit you specifically. We have two doctors of Oriental Medicine here and I’ve been trained by the AHG (American Herbalists Guild).” Herbal remedies have been around for centuries, and for good reason. They work and they’re a safe alternative. More and more, medications are being removed from the shelves because they’re found to be unfit. This is not the case with herbal remedies, and each one is given with knowledge, experience and the utmost care. Whether you’re looking for something safe to give your children for anxiety or ADD, or you are interested in natural hormone replacement therapy, David, Dr. Lisa and Dr. Laura are ready to help you feel your very best. Karen Larsen said, “I have been very pleased with their services, including natural hormone replacement, natural digestive supplements, and laser-like lipo. I have lost over 11 inches in 3 weeks!”

Laser-Like Lipo Gets Results! Maharajh Acupuncture is offering an amazing solution for people who have tried changing their diet, added exercise to their routine, but were still not getting results. Their Laser-Like Lipo is a non-invasive procedure that uses a cold laser on the skin, opening up and essentially detoxing the fat cells inside. This allows your body to naturally break down, and the best part is that it’s pain-free, quick, easy and even affordable. The Laser-Like Lipo can help with things like reducing fat, eliminating “muffin-tops,” and “tucking” away chin fat. Lyssia Roussel says of Dr. Lisa, “She is the best! I highly recommend her to everyone I know. If you are looking for alternate natural ways to solve your problems, she is the one that makes it happen. She is super passionate and really wants to help you.”
