Community Calendar & News Briefs PATIENT ADVOCATE SERVICES, INC. – Striving to Help Patients with Health Insurance and Medical Billing Problems Patient Advocate Services, Inc. (PASi), a local 501(c)(3) non-profit, was founded by Kim Petro McCrum after experiencing many of the problems common to patients dealing with the health care systems. The nonprofit was formed to improve the experience of patients overwhelmed by illness and medical bills. The US has a very complicated medical billing system - with 68,000 different codes that are both complicated and time consuming for anyone trying to understand the complexities. Eighty percent of medical bills that are generated by medical providers contain errors, according to Medical Billing Advocates of America and 60 percent of all bankruptcies are due to medical bills, according to NerdWallet, and out of that 60 percent, 70 percent have health insurance. The US healthcare system, according to the World Health Organization, ranks 37th in quality of healthcare, but ranks in at number two for having one of the most expensive healthcare systems. PASi strives to provide assistance to patients of all ages, their families and caregivers, in managing their medical bills and providing referrals to patients who need specialized advice or assistance. Even though the Affordable Care Act has attempted to address some of the deficiencies in the healthcare system, it has fallen short of correcting many of the problems that frustrate patients and continue to force others into bankruptcy. PASi Introduces Wellness Program A Mayo Clinic study showed that 70 percent of Americans take at least one prescription drug on a regular basis, while 50 percent take two or more. In addition to PASi's primary goal of helping patients with medical billing problems and referrals, it also strives to promote good health and a healthy lifestyle. To this end, PASi recently introduced a member-based wellness program. Membership in the PASi Wellness Program entitles members to take advantage of a variety of holistic and/or alternative treatments. There is a perfect opportunity coming up to find out more in person:

4

FEBRUARY 2016

PASi invites you to its Wellness Program Meet & Greet on February 24th at 6:30 p.m., which is being held at Trinity Ultimate Fitness, located at 11108 Challenger Avenue in Odessa, FL. PASi's desire to help individuals improve their health by participating in the Wellness Program stems from the hope that by improving health, we can all rely less on the healthcare system. Working tirelessly to accomplish the goals of PASi is President Kim Petro McCrum, along with the newly elected Board, Vice-President Dayna Stiteler, Treasurer Charlene Finerty, Secretary Sandra Petro Hart, and Directors-at-Large, Chet Pietras and Renee Mays. The team at PASi strives to promote and improve the Wellness Program, along with the other services offered. Working to utilize their varied areas of expertise – including accounting, nursing, insurance and business – the PASi team helps patients understand complex and often confusing medical invoices, Explanation of Benefit forms, reimbursement forms and other documents, so that PASi can provide the best advice and referrals to help patients, families and caregivers when contacting medical providers, facilities and hospitals. PASi helps patients with problems such as billing errors, overcharging, double charges, and services billed but not provided, as well as where and how to obtain specialized services depending on individual need. Tampa Teens Organize Charity Art Showcase Of Their Peers Two Tampa high school seniors have set out to recognize the artistic talent of their peers and raise funds for a worthy cause in the process. After touring the finest art museums in Europe last summer with a group led by his art history teacher, Matt Cannella, a Plant High senior, founded Artists in Action because he saw how art “deeply moved the masses across continents”. Although he’s not an artist himself, his love for art motivated him to inspire others in the same way that he was inspired when he visited places like the Louvre and Uffizi Gallery. A 3rd generation Tampa native Cannella has chosen to inspire those in his own backyard – right here in Tampa. Cannella even retired from his high school football career so he could concentrate on producing an inaugural teen artist showcase and give back to the community. Cannella has teamed up with Hadley Chillura, a senior at the Academy of the Holy Names, who just so happens to be an accomplished artist. Chillura has been expressing herself through art her whole life and feels that art gives herself a unique voice. She says she has no calling in writing or singing, but can “write through her brushstrokes and sing through her use of color”. The teens are putting together this fabulous showcase to give a diverse group of artists the chance to speak to the community through their art. The Artists in Action charity fundraiser will be held Friday, February 19th, from 6pm to 9:30pm at the historic 1901 Anderson House in Hyde Park, located at 341 South Plant Avenue. Local Teachers Need Your Help! Bless Baby Bennett! Born on June 15, 2015, Bennett Rohrbacker is a gift to this world. Born with many special needs, however, at two weeks old, Bennett was diagnosed with 18q Deletion Syndrome, which is a genetic deletion on the 18th chromosome. Due to this deletion, he spent the first 8 weeks of his life with both of his legs in casts because of a foot malformation, and will be undergoing surgery to correct his right foot in a few months. In addition to this syndrome, Bennett has also been diagnosed with hypotonia, or low muscle tone. He takes several medications each day: one for hypothyroidism; one for pylori spasm (a condition that prevents his stomach from emptying properly); and a cream for his eczema. He also has an aberrant right subclavian artery, where his right subclavian artery passes by his esophagus. Bennett’s parents, local Tampa teachers Natalia and Craig

8

FEBRUARY 2016

Rohrbacker, have done an amazing job of giving Bennett and his older, 2year old brother Rowan all the love and attention they need. They have shown unending patience with both an infant who cries frequently and an energetic two-year-old boy – not to mention all of the students they work with each day. They have an unshakable faith in God, which is how they get their strength each day. Most recently, Bennett was found to have moderate hearing loss in his right ear and profound hearing loss in his left ear. His hearing loss will require assistive hearing devices for both ears – which insurance does not cover. These are just some of the difficulties children with 18q Deletion Syndrome tend to face, along with a possibility of autism and other developmental delays. With each specialist visit comes fifty-dollar co-pay plus additional, medical costs. Due to these expensive medical

costs, Bennett’s godmother Julie is asking for your help. She says, “I would love to be able to take some of the worry off of their shoulders by providing them with money for Bennett’s hearing devices, as well as all of his other current and future medical costs. Natalia and Craig are truly a blessing to baby Bennett. I am hoping that others will want to give them

“Heavenly Paws” Continued from page 1 A huge animal lover, Terri Most founded Heavenly Paws as a way to help those in the community cope with the loss of their cherished companion. Terri says, “Over the years we have lost pets in our family and think there is a huge need for our services in the Tampa Bay area. We are big animal lovers, and wanted to provide something to the community where every family could afford to have their companion returned to them, with out financially breaking the bank. We all go though different stages of our lives, where money is tight. Even if it is a single parent with three kids, we want to be able to give them the same opportunity to have what everybody else can have at an affordable price; to know that they are being taken care of. These pet owners are going through a difficult time in their lives; they need to feel at ease.” Terri runs Heavenly Paws with the help of her sister Sherry, daughter Brittany and staff. Together they provide a welcoming, homey environment, where guests can feel relaxed and at ease.

18

FEBRUARY 2016

Using a peaceful, gentle and respectful cremation process called Aquamation, Heavenly Paws will help you honor your pet in hopes of providing you with some peace and closure in your time of despair. In addition to providing a more tranquil means of cremation, Aquamation also uses up to 95% less energy than that of a fire cremation, so it is also very environmentally friendly. And, by keeping energy costs low, this allows Heavenly Paws to be able to offer such affordable pricing. Terri says, “Originally patented in 1888, it has only been in the past 20 years that, with advances in technology, Aquamation has been made available to the public, and we are proud to be the first to offer this service to the public in Tampa. Instead of clunky, discolored remains – which is quite often what you will get with a typical fire cremation – with Aquamation, the remains come out similar to white beach sand.” At Heavenly Paws they stand by their commitment of respecting your pet, and thus, each pet is cremated separately, guaranteeing your pet’s ashes will never be mixed with those from another pet. This means that the ashes you receive will be 100% from your pet and no one else’s!

Dogs are some of the best companions in the word, as is Terri’s Beagle Lucy! Even if you choose to have a communal cremation, each pet is still cremated in an individual chamber,

She comes up with total facelifts for the homes of our customers.” Reading through the Angie’s List reviews, there is customer after customer who has used Yeager and Company for multiple projects because they won’t consider using a different company. One Angie’s List member writes, “I have used Yeager Flooring in the past (about 4 years ago) to install hardwood flooring in my living room, dining room and hallways and had a fabulous experience. So when we decided to replace the carpet in one of our bedrooms with hardwood floors, we knew we would only consider giving the job to Jim Yeager and his company. Jim is the ultimate professional and he is THE VERY BEST at what he does. He’s the only vendor I’ve used in Tampa that does WHAT he says his company is going to do, WHEN they say they’re going to do it and for HOW MUCH they are going to do it. You simply can’t get better than Yeager Flooring!” Another Angie’s List member, who used Yeager and Co. to completely remodel the master suite, shares, “This is the second major remodeling job we have done with Yeager. We did our did our due diligence

and met with some other contractors obtaining estimates, but again chose

to do business with Yeager based upon the price, comfort level with Yeager, and (most importantly) our satisfaction with the previous job. We had a good idea of what we wanted and worked with their designer Melanie to fill in the details. She was great to work with and Jim Yeager also kept the project in line and on time. Jim Yeager clearly cares about the quality of the finished project.” “I could not have asked for more,” says another reviewer. “They were timely, professional and provided service above and beyond my expectations. The best contractor I have ever worked with. I highly recommend Jim Yeager and his staff. I have relied on Yeager & Co. for many years for home renovation needs. They have done kitchen remodeling, flooring,

and general contracting work on my property. This project involved converting an outdated tub to a shower. The entire process was seamless with excellent communication. As usual, the job was done on time and in a tidy manner. Jim goes out of his way to accommodate the schedule of a working professional.” Call Yeager and Company, Inc. at 813-918-2737 or 727-375-7813 to arrange a Shop-At-Home appointment.
