An Exciting New Concept in Dining! By Alexis Selby The premise of Genghis Grill has historical roots dating back to the Mongolian Empire. As the largest contiguous land empire in human his-

Independence Day Celebration at Emerald Greens Country Club A tradition unlike any other returns once again to Emerald Greens Country Club and Carrollwood Village. Throughout the 1980’s and 90’s this country club put on one of the best Independence Day fireworks shows in all of Tampa Bay. Unfortunately, the show didn’t go on. Last year the new owners and management of Emerald Greens (formerly Carrollwood Country Club) made it their mission to bring this great event back to the community to enjoy. And boy did they

A Public Apology From Hattie’s Café & Beanery Submitted by Bruce Boore

On Thursday, May 2nd the Neighborhood News ran a very flattering article featuring Hattie's Cafe & Beanery. The article highlighted our dedication to providing fresh, unique foods and specialty coffees, along with our personalized customer service. We anticipated seeing an increase in business due to the story, but we were unprepared for the intense volume of guests that we received the following Saturday. To our great embarrassment, we were so busy as a direct result of the Carrollwood community’s support of our cafe that we were unable to provide the level of guest service and customer interaction that we demand from ourselves. While everyone enjoyed their food, there was one busy point in the day where many orders took much too long to be served. This is unacceptable. We admit we were not prepared for such a heavy volume of visitation. We apologize sin-

cerely to each of our guests who had to wait so long for their food. At close of business, that day, we revisited our high-volume protocols to help serve our guests better and more quickly. The next day, we implemented those policies and used them to serve an even higher volume of guests, this time without the wait or depersonalized service. Everyone got their food in a timely fashion and they were able to enjoy it while engaging with their friends, family, and community – and THAT is what Hattie's is all about. If you were a part of the crowd who got stuck in that Saturday

rush, we would like a chance to apologize personally to you. To make amends, please come in any time during the month of June and mention this letter; Make yourself known to us and we will gladly give you 10% off your order. We appreciate your giving us the opportunity to serve you, and we take it seriously. We are gravely embarrassed that we let you down that day. We hope you'll give us another chance to show how much we care about serving you and making your visit a pleasurable one. From our family to yours, Bruce, Martha, and Jonathan Boore, & the Hattie's service team. Community Calendar Chamberlain High School Needs Your Help!! The Chamberlain High School Athletic Booster Club welcomes your support in raising funds to resurface the existing asphalt track with a latex surface. The CHS track, installed in the late 1950s is scheduled for repaving. Their goal is to raise $80,000, and with additional funding from the School District of Hillsborough County restore the rich tradition of track and field to Chamberlain High School by resurfacing with a modern latex material. Currently, seven Hillsborough County public schools have the latex surface; with several schools scheduled for resurfacing over the next few years. It is becoming more difficult to field a team and stay competitive with other high school track programs without the latex surface. With your help Chamberlain High School can change that by raising funds for a new and improved surface on which to run, as the other Hillsborough County public schools have in the past few years. Chamberlain athletes are a dedicated group of young men and women with several state champions in recent years. Think of how many more outstanding athletes Chamberlain could produce with updated training facilities. Not only does participating in sports keep students physically fit, it also helps students to stay focused on academic success; a winning combination at any school! Please support their efforts in resurfacing the track by making your tax deductible donation today! Please make checks payable to the Chamberlain Athletic Booster Club/Track Project, c/o Chamberlain High School, 9401 North Boulevard, Tampa, FL 33612. Weather Forecast at Corbett Prep: Sunny with a Chance of Snow?

After an in-depth study of the water cycle, students enjoy a form of precipitation rarely seen in Florida ~ SNOW!

Prepared with mittens, extra socks, scarves and hats, the Early Primary students geared up for a “snow day” as part of their interactive, experiential lesson on the effects of weather. Students in PreK4 and Kindergarten began the unit by experiencing the water cycle as they transformed into water molecules moving from classroom to classroom. They started as part of the ocean shining in the sun. As the little “molecules” were heated, they evaporated and formed clouds amidst a sea of mist and fog. Once they condensed as clouds, they fell as chilly precipitation upon a snowy mountain to be absorbed into the earth to nourish plants and grass. To understand how change in the

wind impacts the weather, the small scientists traveled to Lake Park to fly kites in order to see and feel how wind creates lift. The weather patterns thematic unit at Corbett Prep integrates the International Baccalaureate (IB) focus on how weather patterns inform, prepare, and affect the daily lives of people around the world. Always encouraging students to ask questions, Early Primary teachers use an inquiry approach to create joyful experiences that engage the students in all phases of their learning. The areas of inquiry for this unit included weather patterns, classification of clouds, and

Carrollwood Area Neighborhood News

meteorological instruments. As a special celebration of the weather unit, PreK4 teacher Ashleigh Elozory asked Dan Shaffer, ABC Action News anchor and former meteorologist, to pay the junior meteorologists a visit to “talk about the weather.” “What is it called when water condenses from the atmosphere?” Mr. Shaffer asked. Little hands flew up. A proud PreK4 student exclaimed, “precipitation!” “What are examples of precipitation?” “HAIL! SNOW! RAIN!” “The kids asked very intelligent questions” says news anchor Dan Shaffer. “I am impressed with the level of sophistication of their comments and questions. From precipitation to cloud structures, these PreK4 and Kindergarten students knew their weather!” Simulating professional meteorologists, Kindergarten students will present their own reports to their classmates after researching weather patterns of cities they have selected from around the world. The reports will include high and low temperatures, precipitation, wind, and preparations/weather warnings. Technology teacher, Matt Melnick, will video their reports in the school’s TV studio for the students to share with their families.

Tampa Bay Markets’ New Home – Carrollwood! By Pam Sica You could easily have spent a couple of hours (as I did) taking in the various sights, sounds and aromas while meandering through the pleasantly tree-shaded grove. Indeed, I was thrilled to learn that The Fresh Market at Westchase Town Center became the North Tampa Market at the Carrollwood Cultural Center this month, moving this wonderful market to the Carrollwood community. The North Tampa Market, which was held directly behind the Carrollwood Cultural Center, will take place at this same location every second Saturday of the month, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. – rain or shine! Even before stepping foot on the market grounds, you could smell the food vendors preparing for the lunch crowd that would soon descend upon them. Not yet feeling terribly hungry, I walked a little further and my eyes feasted on a positively radiant display of nature’s bounty – huge peppers, multi-colored heads of cauliflower, sumptuous fruit and vegetables galore. I thought, how truly fortunate we are

Simpson Air - The Coolest Guys in Town The air conditioner, the only appliance that runs 24/7 and probably the one that’s most taken for granted…. until it fails. Luckily for Tampa Bay residents, Simpson Air has been keeping homes cool and comfortable since 1999, providing unsurpassed customer service and cutting edge expertise in the maintenance and installation of home comfort systems. Known as “The Coolest Guys In Town,” the saying is more than a motto, it’s a mission for the company. “We don't sell air conditioning,” says Garry Simpson, co-owner of Simpson Air, “we sell peace of mind through the home comfort systems we install, maintain and service. While many companies install units, we use our extensive knowledge and training to do the job right the first time, maximizing performance of the system and teaching the homeowner how to save money while keeping cool.” Simpson notes that by applying their experience and knowledge to the technology they install, versus a simple install and walkaway approach, customers understand that the job was done right, their satisfaction level is

high and they’re more likely to refer you to others. Married for 18 years, Garry and Paige Simpson work together as a team to bring you the very best in home comfort. Garry says, “It is important to be partnered with someone you trust, and someone who is there for you. With her experience in business and mine in air conditioning, we really complement each other to form a strong foundation for our business.” Born and raised in Tampa Bay, Garry has been in the air conditioning industry for more than 35 years and has worked every position in the business – from installations to service to duct work. Long a believer that “knowledge is just as important as the technology we install,” Garry became a licensed State Mechanical Contractor in 1997 to further his understanding of the mechanics of air flow, air balance and duct systems. “What really separates us is our understanding of how air travels through a home to make each and every room comfortable,” says Paige. “Having that understanding makes us unique in that not a lot of companies

Owner Garry Simpson comprehend the mechanics of duct systems and how they work.” Garry adds, “Many people don't realize the importance of having good duct work and that if they don't have a good duct system, their air conditioning unit, no matter how good it may be, will ultimately fail. That’s why we put so much emphasis on education and training.” Paige notes that “We are only as good as our employees,” and Garry has

done an extremely good job of duplicating himself by educating his employees and imparting his extensive knowledge onto them. For Tampa Bay customers, this means that no matter which of their 30 plus team of installers and technicians, puts in your system, the same quality work is always a guarantee. Garry says, “We have taught our employees to take ownership in their work and apply that to each installation.” Through their unique blend of of-

We had been thinking about getting our ducts redone so I called Simpson Air. Simpson showed up and we discussed our options. He looked over everything and got us a quote. Now, we not only have wonderful cool air in our office but the Carrier Performance system is delivering humidified air to all parts of the house on an equal basis including our

walk-in closet. Simpson’s duct work design and layout has proven itself! The two technicians Travis and Lyle did a great job. All Smiles Tampa Bay – Where Your Smile is a Top Priority By Alexis Selby A representation of the relaxation of open seas and the epitome of tranquility, a sailboat is the logo for All Smiles Tampa Bay – and for good reason. “We chose a sailboat for our logo because that is the image we want to portray,” explains Dr. Melissa Grimaudo, DMD, who runs All Smiles Tampa Bay alongside her husband Dr. Joe Grimaudo, DMD, “and that is exactly how you will feel when you are here – calm and relaxed. A lot of people have anxiety about going to the dentist and we want people to know that when they come here they can just sit back and unwind, as if they were sailing the seas with not a care in the world.” From the attentive friendly staff, to the compassionate gentle care, at All Smiles Tampa Bay you are treated more like family than a patient. Dr. Joe says, "Our overall philosophy is to do what is best for our patients. We treat our patients the way we would like to be treated and give them the same loving care as we would our own family.” “My husband and I have been patients of Doctors Joe and Melissa Grimaudo at All Smiles Tampa Bay for the past four years,” writes patient Norma Ymiolch. “During this time we have experienced excellent care with the latest dental technology available. In each of our dental procedures the outcome has been just amazing and we are very satisfied with the results which were achieved without pain. We would highly recommend All Smiles Tampa Bay to our friends and neighbors because patients are treated like family. Every member of the staff is

We just can’t say enough about our experience with All Smiles Tampa Bay. We encourage you to visit them and find out for yourselves.” Dr. Melissa and Dr. Joe met in dental school while working on their doctorates at the University of Florida. They have been married for over seven years and together make an extraordinary team – both in and out of the office. Their shared love for the art of dentistry coupled with their dedication to their patients is a powerful combination, and as a team, alongside their amazing staff, they offer top-notch dental care to families all across the Tampa Bay Area and beyond. Dr. Melissa says, “Our patients know our hygienists; we are like fam-

ily. From the front desk all the way through to the chair-side assistants who work with the doctors, everyone is friendly. We try to make our office as inviting and comfortable as possible.” As a testament to their exceptional treatment, the doctors see patients who come from all across the Tampa Bay Area. They even have a handful of patients that used to live in the area but have moved out of state; these patients travel back across the country to All Smiles Tampa Bay for check-ups because they refuse to see any other dentist. "We have patients from St. Pete to South Tampa to Brooksville,” says Dr. Melissa. “We even have a few patients who travel from out of state.” Patient Doreen writes, "My husband, Michael, and I have been pa-

tients of Dr. Melissa Grimaudo, at All Smiles Tampa Bay, for the past few years. After moving to Florida in 2004, we had a very hard time finding a dentist we liked, and one we felt we could trust – until we met Dr. Melissa. She is kind, compassionate, and dedicated to her patents' well-being. Dr. Melissa operates her practice with the highest level of integrity. Both she and her staff work hard to help ensure that patients are comfortable, and they explain each procedure thoroughly, which we have found puts us at greater ease. Her concern for each patient's health is remarkable. We travel over 40 miles, from south St. Petersburg, to be treated by Dr. Melissa. We wouldn't go to any other dentist." Patient education is a fundamental component at All Smiles Tampa Bay, and the doctors and staff are very adamant about keeping their patients well-informed in regards to their dental health. “We are all about empowering our patients,” says Dr. Melissa. “We are constantly informing our patients about their options. We don't just want to fix your teeth; we want to fix them and teach you how to prevent the problem from happening again in the future.” "We are very honest with our patients,” adds Dr. Joe. “If we recommend something it’s because they really need it." All Smiles Tampa Bay offers the very best in dental technology, from their digital x-rays to their intra-oral cameras, which gives patients an indepth view of exactly what is going on in their mouth in real-time; the images are displayed on the overhead TV as the patient is sitting in the chair – pretty cool! The doctors are very

adamant about continuing their education and keep up-to-date on the most current, cutting edge dental technology. Dr. Joe says, “We pride ourselves on offering quality work. With technology in every field, things are progressing so quickly. If you are not staying on top of things you are not able to offer patients the very best available.” All Smiles Tampa Bay is very family-friendly and the doctors and hygienists can start seeing patients as young as five years old. The office also features a kid’s room, complete with plenty of toys and a TV for entertainment, which is located right next to the dental chairs; so parents can rest assured knowing their child is within arms reach.

Free Whitening For Life If you are taking good care of your teeth and your smile, All Smiles Tampa Bay wants to reward you. With their Free Whitening For Life Program, patients who qualify for this program (must show they maintain a healthy mouth with proper cleaning practices), are given professional whitening trays and a professional whitening gel starter kit for every year they maintain adequate dental hygiene. Dr. Melissa says, “We want patients to be excited about their teeth

and excited about their smile. We want our patients to know we are proud of them!” “Dr. Joseph Grimaudo is an excellent dentist,” writes patient Angela. “He offers personalized service with compassion and empathy. I was recommended to Dr. Grimaudo when I chipped my tooth and my dentist couldn’t get me in for over a month. His office found an open slot for me that day! Everyone in the office was very friendly and Dr. Grimaudo fixed my tooth with perfection. I have continued visiting Dr. Grimaudo’s office for close to five years now and every experience leaves me feeling comfortable and confident about the work provided. I have never felt so comfortable going to a dentist. I recommend Dr. Grimaudo to everyone I know!” All Smiles Tampa Bay is located in the Suncoast Meadows Professional Park at 17200 Camelot Court in Land O' Lakes. Brain Balance Achievement Centers By Alexis Selby As parents, we all want the very best for our children; for them to have the necessary skills and the ability to lead a successful and independent life; to make the right decisions and chart their own path for the future. So what do you do when you realize that there is something amiss – that your child isn’t progressing at the same rate, in some area or another, as other children their age, and is having difficulty with things that come so naturally to others? It can be quite devastating, for both the parent and the child, and many feel helpless, thinking they have no where to turn. But, just know, that there is hope; and, Brain Balance in Oldsmar, located at 4022 Tampa Rd., Suite 6, is seeking to help families dealing with this struggle to regain control of their lives and get their children back on track to success.

Personal Success Stories Cynthia Lucas – A right hemisphere weakness Mother Nancy Lucas first noticed something was unique with her

daughter Cynthia when Cynthia was over a year old. Nancy says, “She was already talking non stop and by the age of two she was speaking full sentences and paragraphs. Cynthia and I both were born very gifted with language.” But it wasn’t until Cynthia turned three that Nancy recognized that something might be wrong. Nancy says, “By the age of three, we knew something wasn’t right. She had a hard time with self – regulation and calming down; going to bed and taking naps was also a challenge for her. She was hard to manage and it was exasperating. Food was also an issue for her, especially the texture. It had to be a certain consistency or she wouldn’t eat it. She was also hyper sensitive and was greatly affected by noise and lacked the ability to withdraw if she got upset.” After years of dealing with the behavior and endless hours spent searching for a solution, Nancy was at her breaking point. She says, “We tried everything – diets, food allergy testing, counseling for both her and me, attachment disorder training, and had spent over three years and endless dol-

I would go away for weeks at a time to different seminars and read over a dozen books, and still it didn’t change the outcome. She was also extremely thin; her body couldn't absorb the food. We fed her healthy food but her body wasn't processing her foods. Her motor skills were a big one and sports were a chal-

lenge for here, due to the lack of coordination of the left and right sides of the brain.” One day while at a Sidewalk exhibit, a miracle happened, and Nancy stumbled upon Larry Polnicky, the owner and Executive Director of Brain Balance in Oldsmar, and, after getting to the subject of her daughter, was in awe at how well Larry knew what she

was going through. Nancy says, “He is the first person that really understood what I was going through and what Cynthia was going through. He gave us hope, and when we went to Brain Balance and Cynthia got the assessment – dysfunctional hemispheric imbalance (weak on the right side of the brain) – there was no question in my mind that this approach wouldn’t work. My husband and I were convinced.” Cynthia started at the center in March 2012, which consisted of three one-hour visits each week. With exercises uniquely tailored for her individual needs, Cynthia worked on everything from physical activities and multitasking, to creative writing and logical thinking. The change happened almost instantly. Within the first month Cynthia was willing to eat more foods and her sense on smell improved. Most importantly, she was able to sit down and eat because now she had enough ability to self- regulate to be calm enough to eat. Her outbursts became less frequent and less violent and her overall behavior dramatically improved. “Within three weeks of her starting the program I could see a difference,” says Nancy. “Brain Balance was a complete miracle. “I love Laura Crumley, Center Director and Larry and the rest of the staff at Brain Balance, and I am so grateful for what they have done in our lives. Cynthia is free, she is healed, and she is able to move forward in her life. She is now the delightful little girl that I always dreamed of raising!” Luke Henderson – A left hemisphere weakness Mother Nadine Henderson first became concerned about her son Luke when at 18 months old he was still not speaking words and as he got older, would make up his own lan-

guage which sounded much like Chinese. The older he got, the more she began to notice that he had a really short attention span and had several sensory issues. She says, “We could never take him to a grocery store or restaurant because of all the distractions; he would misbehave from sensory overload.” Transitioning was also a big challenge, but more on a long span as opposed to immediate. For example, if he stayed with his grandparents for the weekend, it would take 2-3 days for him to adjust to his schedule; the same thing would apply if he had time off of school, etc. Due to lack of comprehension, Luke’s exhibited ‘bad behavior’, which resulted in lots of frustration for the whole family, and especially Luke. When Nadine had Luke tested at the age of 3, they were told he had severe delays in language, speech, comprehension and fine motor skills and was showing signs of autism. But, despite all this, Luke was never given a specific diagnosis. Nadine says, “Since age 3 he was in the FDLRS program, and continued with IEP’s in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. He had Occupational therapy, speech therapy, and language therapy.” The breaking point came in the third grade, when Luke was placed with a new teacher that Nadine felt was not suited for him. “He had a new language therapist who he would complain about, which never happened before,” says Nadine. “He always loved the therapists. He could not focus with her because he was highly distracted by her breath and foot smell – a sensory issue.” After his teacher was out half the year due to her daughter’s illness, Luke had substitute teachers most of the time, and with his transition challenges, it caused him to come home, having broken all sorts of rules. He couldn’t keep focused, which in turn ended with no

self confidence in school. Nadine says, “I fought hard for Luke, and no one was listening. I wanted to scream. I kept driving by this place called Brain Balance and looked it up. I was on their website for a couple of hours and watched Dr. Robert Melillo’s speech. I really felt this could help Luke. After school, when I saw Luke’s face of yet another disappointing day, I pulled into Brain Balance and met Maria Mogollon, Assistant Director, who greeted me ever so kindly It was at this time that Nadine met Laura Crumley and set up an appointment to have Luke assessed. It was a two day assessment. At Brain Balance, they don’t diagnose; instead they pin point the problem - Luke had issues with weakness on the left side of the brain. “A lot of their non invasive tests showed us why he was having issues; for instance – his eyes,” says Nadine. “His vision was fine, but it’s the way his eyes communicated with his brain that was the problem. They had a solution which included a series of different exercises to strengthen his eyes. We learned the importance of core strength and brain function – and they had exercises for that as well. We also learned all about the importance of food sensitivity and how that can affect your child’s behavior and learning.” It was then that Nadine decided to sign Luke up for Brain Balance, which consisted of one hour sessions three times a week, in addition to home exercises, and nutrition changes. Nadine says, “We started seeing a remarkable difference in his overall attitude within the first week. He stopped complaining so much and he was happy all the time. Towards the end of the program I was able to have a full blown conversation with my son, with

Luke Henderson him being able to understand and comprehend what I was saying. His relationships with his father, brother, aunt, and friends all got so much better. Instead of everybody being frustrated all the time, we were all happy and having fun. As far as his learning challenges go, he is in a normal range now. For the first time ever he has just made honor roll. Thanks to Brain Balance he now has confidence and feels smart. He actually says that his brain is working right now. I just wish we would have found Brain Balance sooner; but better late than never!” Brain Balance Oldsmar is located at 4022 Tampa Rd., Suite 6 in Oldsmar. Dr. Neal Sayers Will Never Be Forgotten Submitted by Rebecca Guillen and Corie Fisher On November 13, 2012, beloved local chiropractor Dr. Neal Sayers died in a tragic accident. On behalf of Dr. Sayers' staff and all of his patients, in honor of Father’s Day, we are writing this to not only acknowledge him as the wonderful father he was, but also to celebrate all he brought to the lives of the people who loved him. We still cannot describe the heartbreak we feel at his passing; we miss him – not just as an amazing doctor – but as a father, mentor, and dear friend. “Doc” had the greatest sense of humor; the party didn't start until he walked in! He was obsessed with Lady Gaga's “On the Edge of Glory,” and his competitive nature wouldn't allow anyone else to win, even if it meant going 12 rounds of Wii boxing! And, if he had a trademarked sound effect, it would’ve been the incessant pen clicking. But that was just his fun, slightly Type-A side, personality.

22

JUNE 2013

Overall, he was selfless and humble –someone who exuded humility and grace. His ability to discern when something was wrong and offer insight was uncanny, and we all benefited from it. He was a man of God, who not only fulfilled his purpose as a doctor healing the body, but by allowing God to speak through him to heal souls.

Although he gave his love to everyone unconditionally, undeniably, his family was his heart. He was dedicated to providing for them in every way. We honor you today and every day, Dr. Sayers, as our guiding influence. Not only did you raise three boys with an unshakable foundation, but you helped raise us as your

daughters. We are heartbroken and selfishly miss your presence, but we are humbled to see the manifestation of your positive impact on your staff, patients, family, friends, and community. We love you, miss you, bless you, bring honor to your name, and praise God for you, our beloved boss, father, and friend.
