Ballyhoo Grill Seafood Done Right! By Pam Sica Where can you go to get a smidgen of that fun-filled Big Easy feelin’, coupled with a laid back Key West flavor, lightly seasoned with local sizzle, and more importantly, “Seafood Done Right?” Well, of course, right around the corner at Ballyhoo Grill, conveniently located on Gunn Highway at the edge of

Carrollwood and Citrus Park. The surf board prominently displayed over the front bar instantly reminds you that, “It’s 5:00 somewhere,” so no worries! Ballyhoo offers a Daily Happy Hour Drink Menu from 11-7 and you’ll be hard pressed to pass up their featured $5 Tropical (Pineapple Schnapps and Mandarin Vodka) and Raspberry Creek Martinis See “Ballyhoo” on page 20. By Alexis Selby It’s March, and that means spring cleaning season is here. Do you have a closet overflowing with CDs and records you don’t listen to, old stereo equipment, or shelves of DVDs you don’t watch? I can suggest a solution for you: Bring your unwanted stuff to Sound Exchange and make space at home – And get some cash in the process. Sound Exchange, with locations in North Tampa, Brandon, and Pinellas Park, has long been a local favorite for great deals on new and used music, movies, video games, and more. Since opening in 1987, its staff has been committed to providing its customers with a wide range of music across all styles, from rock to blues to classical. In recent years, they’ve added vintage stereo equipment and used music and pop culture books to the list of items they buy and sell.

During my recent visit to Sound Exchange, there was a lot of action going on. From people bringing in boxes of things to sell; to customers perusing the selection of vinyl records, DVDs, and CDs; to General Manager Ron Wayne stocking the shelves with recently serviced turntables and speakers for sale; Sound Exchange truly is a hub where people of all ages come to hunt for treasures. I was struck by the variety of unusual items, including eight-tracks, reel-to-reel tapes, and vintage magazines. The Brandon location of Sound Exchange even stocks a lot of vintage comic books and superhero figures. The Lock Geeks – Bringing Integrity Back to the Locksmith Industry By Deborah Bostock-Kelley In a lifetime of owning a vehicle, there will come a time when you are in a situation where you are left stranded; where you must pick up a cell phone and make that dreaded, Ican’t-believe-I-did-this, embarrassing phone call. “Um, hi, I locked my keys in my car.” For his passion for cars, technology, and locksmithing, Rob Mcalister was christened “the lock nerd” by his girlfriend. Rob was inspired to change the moniker just a bit to create The Lock Geeks and this professed “lock geek” has heard it all. He explained that locking one’s keys in one’s car is the most common phone call his mobile locksmith business, The Lock Geeks receives. When asked what his most unusual locksmith job has ever been, he did not hesitate in his answer.

8

MARCH 2015

“A naked lady in a garage,” he said. “She locked herself out of her house.” He also had a request for a chastity belt, which tops his list of strangest phone call inquiries. Open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with emergency service until 10 p.m., Rob is trying to bring honesty and integrity back to an often quoteone-price, charge-another, world of locksmithing. His full-time and contracted employees have passed background checks and a rigorous screening process in order to provide his expected level of service. His website explains that The Lock Geeks’ employees start practicing their skills in a junkyard in a controlled area, followed by months of supervised on-the-job training before being allowed to work on vehicles as part of The Lock Geeks team.

For his passion for cars, technology, and locksmithing, Rob Mcalister was christened “the lock nerd” by his girlfriend. Mcalister promises not pull the bait and switch like some of his unsavory competition who may offer a lower price, but may work out of the back of their car with no brick and mortar location. In addition, he always guarantees the price he gave you over the phone is going to be the same price you pay on location. If you need him or have a question or concern after services have been provided, you always have the option to come to his location and speak with him face-to-face.

“The $45 guy is long gone, never to be seen again,” he said. “I stand by my prices. What I quote you – even if the job goes south- is what you pay.” And Mcalister offers a six month warranty on all remotes. Many five star reviews on Yelp and a merchant score of 100% on MerchantCircle prove that Mcalister and The Lock Geeks have no problem creating happy customers. “I locked my keys in my car while I was staying in a hotel in Tampa,” writes customer Tammy. “I called Lock Geeks and they was here in 10

minutes. It only took a minute to open the car door. They were friendly, courteous, and efficient. I would definitely recommend this business and would use them again.” Mcalister and his team of locksmith specialists have come to the rescue of men and women throughout Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties since opening on Florida Avenue in 2010. While living in a neighboring city and providing locksmith service in Carrollwood, Mcalister enjoyed the friendly small business vibe and welcoming feel of the Carrollwood community. He relocated his business to its current location of 14813 Turner Road in June 2014. Before opening his shop, Mcalister gained his locksmith skills and

honed his craft working three years for another locksmith. In addition to learning hands-on techniques, Mcalister learned many skilled techniques using his computer as well. “I learned new school, through Internet forums and YouTube,” he said. “Now, I travel the U.S. three times a year for training in the latest technologies.” Mcalister got into the locksmith business because of his love of cars. He enjoys repairing cars that aren’t running. Originally his goal was to be a mechanic, but there was one crucial problem – the grease and grime. “I’m a car guy, but I don’t like getting dirty. Being a locksmith allows me to work on cars and stay clean,” he said. Fully bonded, licensed and insured, a member of the National Lock-

Carrollwood Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

smith Automobile Association and the Florida West Coast Locksmiths Association, Mcalister boasts the same tools the dealers use. “We don’t use a similar software – we use the same software the dealers use and have the same capabilities,” he said. “We even do work for the dealerships.” For residential and commercial customers, The Lock Geeks’ services include unlocking doors, rekeying locks, key extraction, new sales and installs of locks, as well as repair, mailbox locks, safe openings and combination changes, garage door remotes and keypads, cabinet lock replacement, and electronic and high security locks. The Lock Geeks’ automotive skill set includes unlocking your car, replacing your car key, repairing and replacing your ignition, repairing damaged door and trunk locks, keyless entry remotes, as well as, motorcycle key replacement.

Though Mcalister works in automotive, residential and commercial locksmith services, and specializes in bringing the latest locksmith technology to his clients, he was one of the first locksmiths to bring refurbished, affordable automotive key fobs to Tampa. If you have ever had to replace a key fob, then you experienced the sticker shock that comes with its replacement. Mcalister offers discount promotions that he regularly shares on his Instragram and website and will soon offer via an eNewletter. “We carry almost every vehicle – Toyota/Lexus, Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth, Honda, Nissan/Infiniti, VW, GM-Cadillac/GMC/ Chevrolet/Pontiac/Buick/Oldsmobile, Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, BMW, Volvo, Land Rover, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and Saab,” he said. “Give me call and we’ll get you a price quote right up front.” Their office is located at 14813 Turner Rd in Tampa and is open Mon. – Fri., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sat. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with emergency service until 10 p.m. To learn more about Mcalister and The Lock Geeks, please call (813) 421-3382, visit www.TheLockGeeks.com or find them on Instagram at LockGeeks.

J & C Consign and Design Fine Furnishings & Gift Boutique By Kim Thomas J & C Consign and Design, which just opened this past year, has remained a favorite shopping spot for many in the area and on a recent visit when I snagged a couple of treasures, I can see why! Owner Christine Jackson found a need in the area and people are responding very favorably. “We have a lot of repeat customers and the feedback has been great,” says Christine. “Everyone seems to love this store!” I was curious to see what J & C Consign and Design has to offer, and wow, I am completely impressed with this store! Don’t let the industrial look of the exterior of J & C Consign and Design fool you – it just means there is more room for all of the great finds inside. There is a great selection, and it is presented to the customer in boutique fashion, which is a refreshing and makes for a better shopping experience.

14

MARCH 2015

Located next to the Man Cave Warehouse at 8809 Gunn Highway in Odessa, J & C Consign and Design Fine Furnishings & Gift Boutique is much more than a consignment store. Bringing boutique shopping to Tampa, the store offers premium fine furnishings in great condition, including many brand new pieces. The moment you step in, you’ll know that J & C is a treasure trove. From the unique holiday décor, including hand-painted signs like my favorite “Keep Calm and Zombie On,” to the fun selection of gift items that anyone would love receiving, to fine furniture and home accents, this store makes shopping fun and convenient. Every day there is something different and with the great prices, if you see something you like, you better buy it! Repeat customers are common at J & C because you have to keep checking in to see what treasures have come in. During my last visit, I overheard that a houseful of furniture would be

coming in soon, making it hard to leave and making me eager to go back. The consigned items include top-quality furniture and home accents including lighting and some great artwork for your walls. A set of prints in matching frames from Ire-

perfectly pull your décor together in a room, then you have to check out J & C Consign and Design. As you meander through the store, your eye keeps finding new items in the “living rooms” and “dining rooms” that are set up. One-of-a-Kind Gifts at Affordable Prices! J & C Consign and Design offers a fabulous selection of giftware and handcrafted merchandise from local artisans. Displayed throughout the store, you’ll find many completely unique items including handcrafted soaps and lotions. I love the quirky hand-painted signs in the Halloween décor section. Also adorable are the custom-made buckets, which can be personalized with monogrammed ini-

tials, or decorated to show off team spirit for a favorite team. The same local crafter who designs the buckets also designs handmade cards and gift bags, which are completely unique and inexpensive. You can purchase a package of five handmade cards for only $10, and there is no worry that someone else will give the same card from a big-name company. Right now, there is a great selection of seasonal décor including seasonal flags, and of course, flags to celebrate your favorite college football teams. Gator and Seminole fans will find some great gear inside including the customized buckets, tumblers, signage, doormats and more. Another thing to love about J & C Consign and Design – this store is budget friendly. You won’t believe what you can find for under $25. For less than $10, you can give yourself the gift of aromatherapy and try one of the Tyler Candle Company® candles. The smallest votive (2 oz.) lasts for 15 hours. I loved the fragrance so much – I chose the Mulled Cider™ - I let it burn continuously and let it inspire me to keep unpacking and to find the perfect place for my fox and stag pictures. I was truly surprised at how little the candle had burned

down; they truly do last 15 hours. I didn’t ask how many hours the larger sizes burn, but from the small one and the amazing smell, I know they are the perfect hostess gift and J & C has carries all sizes and fragrances including the latest holiday aromas. Candles and soaps and lotions – oh my! But there is so much more! Gift ideas abound in this store with picture frames from Glory Haus and festive holiday platters, cheese spreaders, and serving trays. Looking for something special? J & C has it, and even carries a full line of luxurious Hen House linens. If you are looking for a gift, you can’t ask for an easier shopping experience. “We have people who just pull in, put the car in park, and run in for a gift because we have a great selection and it’s so easy for them,” says Christine. “We even have the cutest handmade cards and gift bags.” Truly, why find the crowds and traffic when you can pop in J & C Consign and Design. It’s easy to get into, there is plenty of parking and the selection is a delight. Plus, the pricing is very fair. Christine says, “I research everything we carry in the store to make sure that we are selling it for less than you’ll find it anywhere else.”

Never the Same Store Twice! I am writing this and itching to go back, to see what new treasures I find and honestly, to beat you to it! Nah, just kidding, there are plenty of finds for all of us and the best thing is that the inventory at J & C Consign and Design is constantly changing. When I visited there was a beautiful living room set, a couple of bedroom sets that looked never used even though they were consigned from individuals, and some beautiful high-end furniture from elite furniture stores at greatly reduced prices. I spied an antique pine hutch and I find myself wondering if it is still there. Stop by or you’ll never know what treasures lie within J & C Consign and Design. J & C Consign and Design is located at 8809-B Gunn Highway in Odessa, and is open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Tuesday – Saturday, and on Sunday, 12–5 p.m. Please call (813) 920- 0800 for additional information or visit the website, www.jcconsign.com, where you can find information about how to submit photos of items you’d like to consign and sign up for email updates. After some research, I realized that there were some states where the animal shelters had space and had people who wanted to adopt dogs and cats.” Now Gigi receives phone calls from shelter volunteers when there is a dog or cat that is scheduled to be euthanized. After the call, she and the rest of the Paw Print Hearts’ volunteers spring into action to help save the animal. Gigi says that they have sent dogs and cats to Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Connecticut, but have found a shelter in Pennsylvania that truly is a life savior for Florida’s orphaned dogs and cats. “The director at the shelter is originally from Lakeland, Florida, and

Since founding PawPrint Hearts Animal Rescue in May 2014, Gigi Gauthier has helped save the lives of over 300 dogs and 80 cats from being euthanized. By finding them new loving homes, these dogs are given a second chance at life and the opportunity to find a forever home! he is able to find homes for all the pets we send him,” says Gigi. “The challenge is getting the animals there.” Gigi says that Paw Print Hearts relies on volunteers to make the 32-hour round trip to Pennsylvania with a load full of furry cargo.

Gigi adds, “About 2 or 3 times a month, we rent a van and one of our volunteers will drive the dogs and cats to Pennsylvania. We can usually get 25 dogs in one van with 2 cats sitting up front with the driver.” In addition to transporting lucky

health or behavioral issues. Most health issues are easily fixed and we have wonderful veterinarians who help us out. Many times behavior issues are due to the fact that the animal has been taken away from the only home it has ever know and stuck in a crate. They are scared and not sure what is happening to them. Usually, with a little work, their true, loving personality comes out.” Paw Print Hearts counts on its volunteers to foster the animals, or in some cases boards them at local facilities. Gigi estimates that it costs approximately $200 per dog to rescue them from death but she thinks each one is worth it. “We want to be able to help as many dogs as possible and it has been wonderful that the dona-

Using standing equipment and over ground walking help to increase bone density, improve circulation, and avoid muscular atrophy. The Functional Electrical Stimulation also used during the therapy, stimulates the central nervous system. It allows muscle contraction, improves blood flow, and builds strength as well. Other exercises improve core strength, which allows more independence in daily life. Since insurance companies do not cover the specialized long-term therapy that activity based exercise centers offer, potential clients who are not able to afford rehabilitative therapy costs do not have the opportunity to seek recovery options that are beneficial to their well being and quality of life. Those who make a tax deductible donation will help to fund a Therapy Scholarship Program that would enable the individual to participate in a therapy program geared towards recovery. Success Story! Ricardo Costa was injured in July, 2010, after suffering a motocross accident. Costa was left a T5/T6 paraplegic, and since then has sought out many clinics, both in South America and the United States, in search of differentiated, intensive treatments. He always believed that he could recover his mobility and improve his physical condition. This was how Ricardo discovered Acreditando (Believing), one of the largest private neuromotor recovery centers in South America, which uses a methodology based on recent research into new neuroplasticity approaches and concepts that help us to continually learn through the remapping of the connections of our nerve cells. Together with his practical experience and knowledge of other programs in the USA, Ricardo, through Believing Recovery Center, has brought this expertise to Tampa. The program uses physical exercise based on scientifically proven techniques, to meet the needs and abilities of each individual client in search for a better quality of life and greater independence. Believing Recovery Center has highly qualified professionals with extensive experience both in the USA and other countries, up to date methodologies and outstanding personal service to all those who suffer from spinal cord injuries and other neurological impairments. Off to the left is the outside patio, where you can relax and listen to the jazz or beach music that is wafting in the air or become one of the avid sports fans taking in a Rays or Bucs game when they start back up again. What fun! Live local entertainment is offered on Friday and Saturday evenings coming from the bandstand in the back, which makes it a perfect party atmosphere! Don’t worry about being too hot or too cold – there are paddle fans and heaters to keep you comfortable. Wait, there’s more… Step down off the patio and you’ll see

Ballyhoo is petfriendly, so you’ll often see folks with their dogs enjoying their time together… competing at the corn hole board out back is another outside activity often enjoyed by patrons in the warmer weather. Mike Hayes, General Manager and Executive Chef came right out to greet me along with Manager, Linda Hess. Mike is an engaging fellow who has been with Ballyhoo in different capacities on and off for the last thirteen years. The new and varied menu is his creation and includes something for

He noted that, “Food preparation is made to order, so most menu items can be prepared gluten-free for those who request it.” Linda quickly added, “You can order anything off the menu all day long (with the exception of baked potatoes, starting at 4PM).” Then when I asked about all the regulars that make this such a local favorite, Mike stated, “The current ownership has given Ballyhoo a leg up on the ability to maximize our potential within the community.” Sitting there for a short time with these two, it then became quite obvious that these folks

Lunch Specials change daily and I’m told that folks in the know look forward to Fridays, when often times, the Grouper Rueben is featured - a hands down local favorite! You can always call ahead to find out what is on special for the day, whether it is Sea Bass, Stone Crab, Lobster, Black Grouper (that thicker, steak-like, better flavored kind), Mangrove Snapper, et al. Check out their website at Ballyhootampa.com for standard mid-

If you’re looking for sandwiches, soft tacos or pasta, you can choose from various fish, chicken, pork and beef offerings that are sure to please. Friday and Saturday nights are Ballyhoo’s busiest times. I came one Friday at 6PM to check things out and was amazed to see all the age groups represented. Sean and Anna Collins were happily chowing down with their two little girls, Sandie and Molly, who had already completely colored their paper table cloth with some marvelous crayoned creations, of which they were obviously very proud. Longtime diners, the two enjoyed being able to share the Ballyhoo dining experience with their daughters. Anna quipped, “The She Crab Soup here is phenomenal! It keeps me coming back.” She was right. I ordered a cup and it was outstanding. I’m thinking I should have gone for a bowl! My crew arrived, so my husband ordered us a Smoked Fish Spread for an appetizer, a long-time favorite of our good friends, Dave and Laurie Wolf. While waiting for our entrees including the scrumptious Jerk Rubbed Yellow Tail Snapper and Caprese Sea Bass Specials to be prepared,

we chatted and feasted, recalling old times at Ballyhoo with smiles. Few words were spoken after our meals were brought to the table all at once, since there was some serious eating going on! That is a testament to how delicious everything looked and tasted, as well as to how well-prepared each dish was. We simply could not put down our forks! Even the vegetables were delectable… and just how often is that the case? I enjoyed every last bite and had no room for dessert. Alas, we’ll have to save that for another day. Ballyhoo is a vibrant and accommodating establishment that offers

fantastic food and drink in a fun-filled atmosphere where there are no limits on creativity. Come on in and join the fun with the personable bar and wait staff, along with Mike and Linda anytime! I certainly enjoyed my visits. Hope to see you there soon! Ballyhoo Grill Tampa is located on the corner of Ehrlich Road and Gunn Hwy. at 7604 Ehrlich Road in Tampa. Brunchies of Tampa – Fresh, Healthful, Local, Friendly! By Alexis Selby Celebrating 10 years in the Carrollwood area, Brunchies of Tampa has been serving up fresh, delicious food for over a decade. Offering a huge selection of masterfully prepared breakfast, brunch and lunch options, it will come as no surprise that in that time this fabulous restaurant has remained a huge hit among local residents. “This is my favorite breakfast restaurant in the area,” writes diner Melanie. “I order either an omelet or the make your own skillet. I love avocado and they put fresh slices on top of both and are not stingy. My husband gets their sweet dishes and often tries their specials. He always enjoys his meal! I love that they do seasonal dishes as well.” Owner Bill Kranich has been in the restaurant business his whole life and takes great pride in his restaurant. Quite often he can be found working back in the kitchen or out on the floor mingling with guests, ensuring they always receive the best service and most satisfying experience. He says, “I love meeting new people, that is the best part. Brunchies is an upscale restaurant

On our most recent visit our server Liza gave us some great recommendations. She was really helpful with the menu and suggested the Goddess Omelet, which ironically is what I already had my eye on to try. It was phenomenal! This egg white omelet is perfect for those looking for a healthy

Accompanied by your choice of a side (Liza recommended the freshly diced tomatoes) and crunchy toast, this delightfully delicious breakfast choice is both healthy and filling. Her other recommendation was the strawberry waffles, which my husband described as “wafflicious” – they

With a touch of syrup this oversized waffle loaded with whipped cream and a generous helping of fresh strawberries was oh so yummy. It was so good, that I couldn’t help but steal a couple bites off his plate. “Freshness is very important to us,” says Bill. “Everything is made fresh, in-house. You can taste the difference.” In addition to omelets and waffles, there are many other breakfast options to choose from on their menu,

including skillets, pancakes, breakfast burritos, breakfast platters and a huge selection of benny’s (benedicts), such as their Eggs William – poached eggs nestled on warm turkey, crispy bacon and tomato, served on an English muffin and smothered in Hollandaise. For the late risers, they offer a superb selection of lunch options, including salads, wraps, sandwiches and burgers. They also have a variety of “skinny plate” options for those who want to watch their waistline.

We can accommodate groups of all sizes.” Bill takes great pride in his community and is involved with many local organizations, including Operation Helping Hand as well as local
