Introducing CNCN, an Advocate for North Pinellas The Council of North County Neighborhoods (CNCN) the organization that represents the interests of the communities of the unincorporated areas of northern Pinellas County. CNCN is expanding its impact significantly and has recently added Highland Lakes to its membership and increased active member ship from some of the larger communities in the region such as East Lake Woodlands. CNCN is a nonprofit (501c4) organization formed to bring together the North Pinellas County’s neighborhoods to promote communication and cooperation between member organizations of Northern Pinellas County, to foster a sense of community, to provide a forum for member organizations, and most important is to act as a neighborhood advocate for the benefit of our member organizations and to bring a common voice to county and state government including and not limited to the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners and our State Legislators. Encompassing roughly the area from Curlew Road north to the Pasco County line and bounded by Brooker Creek Preserve on the east, CNCN en-

East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

compasses all the neighborhoods in the unincorporated area of North Pinellas, including some communities west of Lake Tarpon. Not only can master or community associations, like ELWCA, be members of CNCN but individual home owners associations are encouraged to join as well. You may well find that your association has interests in common with other HOAs and communities outside of our own. Watch for reports on CNCN and other matters outside the gates in both the Heron and on the ELWCA website. Coming off a successful effort to expand funding for youth activities in the north county area (more in a future article), CNCN also sponsored during the fall forums for primary and general election candidates in the recent statewide and local elections and also held a special forum introducing judicial candidates to the area residents. The organization has an aggressive agenda for 2015 including lobbying the county on the East Lake Road Repaving Schedule, an East Lake Beautification Project, funding for safety lighting on pedestrian access to East Lake High School and pushing for county or state agency assistance on flooding issues affecting Keystone area

residents. Other possible agendas include expansion of the East Lake Library facility and other topics which area residents would like to see addressed that would positively impact their neighborhoods and which cannot be addressed within their own association budgets. Comments and ideas are welcome and can be sent either individually or on behalf your association, to their website at www.cncnpc.org. Perhaps most importantly is the unique access CNCN has to County commissioners on a one on one basis. Meetings with each commissioners are held on a regular basis at which a common agenda as to the needs and experiences of every association are articulated by CNCN board members in face to face meetings with individual commissioners and their staff. These concerns can be impacted directly by the county commission action but can also help obtain access to other state and local agencies like SWFWMD (Swift Mud), the PUC and the Sheriff’s department. Clearly an organized effort in articulating individual and common neighborhood needs is an effective method for moving items of concern forward on a timely and coordinated basis. (cncnpc.org)

Paw Print Hearts is a Beacon of Hope for Local Dogs and Cats By Marcy Sanford Since May 2014, Paw Print Hearts has saved more than 300 dogs and 80 cats from being euthanized. Gigi Gauthier founded Paw Print Hearts after volunteering at the Hillsborough County Animal Shelter (HCAS), now the Pet Resource Center. She says, “While I was volunteering at HCAS, I saw many young and healthy animals being killed because there was no space left for them. After some research, I realized that there were some states where the animal shelters had space and had people who wanted to adopt dogs and cats.” Now Gigi receives phone calls from shelter volunteers when there is a dog or cat that is scheduled to be euthanized. After the call, she and the rest of the Paw Print Hearts’ volunteers spring into action to help save the animal. Gigi says that they have sent dogs and cats to Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Connecticut, but have found a shelter in Pennsylvania that truly is a life savior for Florida’s orphaned dogs and cats. “The director at the shelter is originally from Lakeland, Florida, and

Since founding PawPrint Hearts Animal Rescue in May 2014, Gigi Gauthier has helped save the lives of over 300 dogs and 80 cats from being euthanized. By finding them new loving homes, these dogs are given a second chance at life and the opportunity to find a forever home! he is able to find homes for all the pets we send him,” says Gigi. “The challenge is getting the animals there.” Gigi says that Paw Print Hearts relies on volunteers to make the 32-hour round trip to Pennsylvania with a load full of furry cargo.

Gigi adds, “About 2 or 3 times a month, we rent a van and one of our volunteers will drive the dogs and cats to Pennsylvania. We can usually get 25 dogs in one van with 2 cats sitting up front with the driver.” In addition to transporting lucky

rescues to a new life up north, Paw Print Hearts also finds home for dogs and cats locally and helps to rehabilitate dogs or cats that the shelter has deemed unadoptable. Gigi says, “We are not going to turn an animal away because the shelter says they have

health or behavioral issues. Most health issues are easily fixed and we have wonderful veterinarians who help us out. Many times behavior issues are due to the fact that the animal has been taken away from the only home it has ever know and stuck in a crate. They are scared and not sure what is happening to them. Usually, with a little work, their true, loving personality comes out.” Paw Print Hearts counts on its volunteers to foster the animals, or in some cases boards them at local facilities. Gigi estimates that it costs approximately $200 per dog to rescue them from death but she thinks each one is worth it. “We want to be able to help as many dogs as possible and it has been wonderful that the donations we’ve received to date have helped us rescue as many as we have,”

says Gigi. “Any donation helps and every dollar of the donation goes to helping the animals.” She adds, “My mission is to rescue. My dream is that someday I won’t have to.” Donations can be made to their PayPal account: pawprinthearts@gmail.com. Checks can be made to Paw Print Hearts, 13046 Race Track Rd. Ste 145, Tampa, Fl 33626. For more information about Paw Print Hearts, to make a donation, volunteer, or rescue a dog or cat, visit their Facebook page www.Facebook.com/PawPrintHearts.

Suncoast Women’s Care, Gentle OB/GYN for Women by Women By Julie Kanehl If you’re looking for OB/GYN doctors who are knowledgeable, experienced, well respected, and bilingual to boot, then you should meet the doctors at Suncoast Women’s Care. Conveniently located at 2044 Trinity Oaks Boulevard, on the second floor of the Trinity Medical Arts Building, Suncoast Women’s Care has been a trusted facility “for women and by women” since 2002. Women of all ages love the approachable doctors and cozy atmosphere of Suncoast Women’s Care, and the excellent care provided there. When Wanda I. Torres, MD, FACOG, opened Suncoast Women’s Care, it was important to her to offer a facility where women would be seen by female doctors, saying, “We understand what it’s like to be the patient.” Her sweet personality and gentle approach with her patients has made Dr. Torres a local favorite for women of all ages who need care. From puberty through post-menopause, Suncoast Women’s Care is a provider that puts women first, regardless of where they are in their journey.

10

Malieri Colon-Rivera, MD joined Suncoast Women’s Care this past summer. Like Dr. Torres, she earned her degree and completed her residency at the University District Hospital in San Juan, affiliated to University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. Originally a Primary Care doctor, Dr. Colon truly felt a calling to become an OB/GYN doctor, and says having a background in Primary Care has come in very handy with her patients. Offering a comprehensive approach to OB/GYN care, Dr. Torres and Dr. Colon excel at taking their time with each patient, whether it’s an annual well visit, or a scheduled visit to discuss a concern. The doctors at Suncoast Women’s Care really take the time to bond and connect with their patients, while educating them on their many options from birth control to birth plans, and from understanding the importance of mammograms to questions about their monthly cycle. Additionally, Dr. Torres and Dr. Colon both perform gynecological procedures, both in office and at nearby hospitals like Mease Countryside and Morton Plant North Bay Hos-

pital. Smaller procedures can be done in office or right next door at the BayCare Surgery Center. Top Notch Gynecological Care Today, things like hysterectomies and the removal of fibroids can be done with less pain and in less time, and the best part is that it requires almost none of the recovery time that it used to. Using Robotic Assisted Surgery, the physicians at Suncoast Women’s Care combine their gentle approach with the very best in technology to help women heal quickly and get back to their busy lives. Often, the doctors at Suncoast Women’s Care can help patients avoid surgery by offering other therapies such as physical therapy for pelvic floor rehabilitation. The best part is that you won’t even have to go anywhere else. They have a physical therapist who offers biofeedback therapy right in their office. Dr. Torres says, “Some studies have shown that biofeedback therapy helps 85-95 percent of women.” Suncoast Women’s Care also offers urodynamic testing in the office. When a woman is having problems with pelvic

prolapse and/or urinary incontinence, it can be very personal and upsetting and it really helps to have doctors who understand and truly care. Sara said, “Dr. Torres and her staff are just simply amazing. I, unfortunately, was having a lot of problems with my period, Dr. Torres advised me

as to what my options were and I trusted in her completely. I had to take the proper steps to try to correct my issues. I had the hysteroscopic procedure right in her office. I was so glad that the she offers the procedure to be done in her office. Everyone was so comforting, even being as nervous I as was, it was very quick and I didn’t have any pain or discomfort after the procedure.” Another patient said, “I had the DaVinci Robotic Hysterectomy performed by Dr Torres at Mease Countryside Hospital...I am now a ‘new’ woman! Dr Torres is my Super Hero! What fantastic teamwork at the hospital in all phases of my surgical stay. Twenty-four hours after surgery I was ready to go home! I have been a patient of Dr Torres … for approximately eight years. I am most impressed that they truly listen to you plus being professional, knowledgeable, skillful and caring.” Obstetrics that You and Your Baby Can Trust Choosing a doctor to help you deliver is a big decision! Whether you’re just thinking about conceiving or you’re looking for a physician to help deliver your third or fourth child, the

physicians at Suncoast Women’s Care simply love delivering babies. Their patient, calm approach during your pregnancy and delivery will make the entire experience that much better. Delivering at Mease Countryside Hospital, where they have an incredible NICU for peace of mind, Dr. Torres and Dr. Colon are dedicated and experienced at making sure that your little one’s entrance into the world is in good hands. When you’re pregnant, it’s so important to have a group of professionals at the ready, just in case you have questions, symptoms, or any kind of concern. Dr. Torres and Dr. Colon work with each patient to develop an ideal birthing plan, so that everyone is on the same page. They can help you decide if an epidural is right for you, and discuss the possibilities of caesarean sections and where they come into play. Each pregnancy is different, and each woman is different, which is why Suncoast Women’s Care treats each individual patient with respect. For those women who prefer a natural birth experience, Suncoast Women’s Care is proud to have Karen Vaughn-Kerns, ARNP, CNM on staff as a Nurse-Midwife. She offers many years of experience, helping many women give birth to healthy babies.

Lisa said, “I have been going to Dr Torres since 2004. My first baby was born in 2005 and I have two other babies since then delivered by [Suncoast Women’s Care]. I love this group. All of the staff and midwives are so nice and helpful. I feel comfortable every time I come to this office. I would recommend this office to anyone looking for a gynecologist, and have many times.” If you’re looking for an OB/GYN physician who will stand by your side and provide professional and experienced care, choose Dr. Torres and Dr. Colon at Suncoast Women’s Care in

Trinity. They accept most insurance companies, and work hard to make your experience a positive and pleasant one. Suncoast Women’s Care is located at 2044 Trinity Oaks Blvd. in Trinity, on the 2nd floor of the Trinity Medical Arts Building, in Suite 215. They are open Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. and from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. on Friday; closed during lunch from 12:30-1:30 p.m. To make an appointment, call 727-376-0060 or visit the website, www.SuncoastWomensCare.com.

RN & Associates Works for Families in Building and Respecting Wealth By Kim Thomas We’ve all heard the saying, “the rich get richer and the poor get poorer,” and while that isn’t always the case, there is some undeniable truth in that statement. Sure, sometimes the poor get rich, but earning wealth and maintaining wealth do not go hand-in-hand. There are endless examples of people who’ve either earned or won a moderate fortune only to lose everything within a few years, or worse, their children run through it. The wealthiest of families (think Rockefeller, Hearst, DuPont, Vanderbilt) have known something that still stands today – in order for a family to grow wealth, the whole family needs to be educated in matters of finance and the responsibility that comes along with having money. “Old money” families who’ve been able to keep and often grow their

14

family fortunes do so by instilling core values in their offspring and educating them in responsibly managing wealth from an early age. Throughout history, this elitists’ education has been provided to clients of the megaladons of the financial world – institutions such as New York’s Bessemer’s Trust, Northern Trust and Bank One provide this level of service to clients, but to be a client your net worth must be more than 20 million dollars. So where do those families who have amassed wealth of two, five or ten million dollars turn when looking for financial advising that goes beyond stocks and bonds and ventures into family wealth-building strategies and the social aspects of a lifestyle that promotes responsible stewardship in future generations? If you’ve worked hard to provide a generous lifestyle and a secure future for your family, and you’d like to en-

work as a team at RN & Associates to offer a refreshing change from most financial advising firms. RN & Associates sets itself apart by focusing on teaching the whole family about the financial and social responsibilities that come along with managing wealth. RN & Associates’ unique roundtable approach is exciting. They give concierge level service to clients, bringing together CPAs,

East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

Insurance Agents, Estate Attorneys and any other relevant participant to lay everything out – a roundtable gathering where all participants are available and where the focus is on discovering all avenues of wealth and the tactics necessary to guard that wealth, whether tax-saving strategies, investments, estate planning or providing for future generations. Speaking of future generations, the upcoming generation running around your home right now is very important to RN & Associates. So much so that Ram developed the Family Wealth Education Program™ (FWEP™) specifically to teach his clients’ children about building and maintaining wealth. Drawing on his experiences in working with wealthy families and the problems that are inherent with wealth, Ram put his heart into developing the FWEP™ exclusively available to RN & Associates’ clients. In addition to an MBA in Finance, Ram has a PhD in Behavioral Counseling and a Doctorate in Education. He has authored two books, A Journey from Within and Reflections of Life, and is penning a third titled Dadisms, in honor of his father’s quips of wisdom. Ram drew upon his

unique perspective, experience and education to create the FWEP™, which RN & Associates uses as a teaching tool to eradicate some of the issues their clients were having with children not being prepared to responsibly manage money. It’s cute when your five-year-old thinks you can take an endless amount of cash from the ATM, but not so much when a teen or young adult knows no limits. Children of wealthy parents need to be taught where their families’ fortunes have come from and how to live well but within reason. RN & Associates put great emphasis on teaching their clients’ children strategies to build their own wealth, instilling pride and confidence. Family men themselves, Ram and Philip bring to the table a combined 25 years of experience in serving the unique financial needs of elite families in the Tampa Bay area and beyond. They also have the “dad” experience to know that kids’ minds are quick to learn but also easily distracted – something Ram considered when developing the FWEP™, which utilizes games and other avenues to peak the interest of young minds. They know that to hold the attention of the young, from

East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

ages six to twenty-six, the conversation needs to be relatable, current and engaging. They know this because in addition to 25 years’ combined experience in financial advising, they each have three children. Philip, who acts as the relationship manager for the team, and his wife Adeel are parents to Felicia, 20, PJ who will be 19 by the time you read this, and 11-year-old Kendall. Ram and his wife Sadhana, who is a local physician, have three children, 22-year-old Rohan, 16-yearold Ram Jr. and Malhar, who is 9 and scrupulously planning for the inventory and costs of his and Kendall’s (Philip’s youngest) lemonade stand they are planning to have in September. Ram didn’t try to hide his pride at Malhar’s business savvy, sharing, “He said to me, ‘Dad, I have to find a price point [to charge for the lemonade] that is acceptable to the general public.’” Impressive to me was Ram’s and Philip’s sincerity in helping their clients to build their financial portfolios and to guide them in the financial education of their offspring. Bluntly put, they want to help parents in guiding the next generation to be affluent without the obnoxious and irresponsible behaviors associated with “affluenza,” the term used to describe a dysfunctional relationship with money or the pursuit of it. With children ranging into young adulthood, Ram and Philip have experience in relating to all ages and attention spans. And if you have kids, you

Why Do Strong Students Not Score Well on the SAT and ACT Tests? “I just don’t understand it. My student has an excellent GPA and good class standing, yet cannot score nearly what I expected on the PSAT, SAT, or ACT. Dr. Adams, can you help us?” This time of year, I receive many phone calls like this from parents of juniors after they have received the next round of score reports. And it is always a question when parents receive test score results which are a surprise. My answer is always, “Yes,” which translates into my normally improving the student’s SAT superscore by 200 – 350 points, or their ACT composite by 4 – 7 points. Why is there this inconsistency between a student’s capabilities and scoring? During the past five years, I have found three key reasons that students do not achieve their best scores on these exams. First, they are not properly prepared – most often just reading a book or going through a prep course by a part-time teacher who

16

normally uses “outdated” tutoring methods and materials. Second, as important, the students have not been properly prepared mentally for the exam including the underlying motivation to do their best – which often leads to “high test anxiety” and the inability to think at their best during the exam. Third, regular high school classes do not prepare students to write the type of essays needed, to handle the needed grammar, to read quickly – usually around 200 words a minute, and to know and to use the needed math skills which are quite different from what is taught. What are some recent examples of your students in this category? This past exam cycle, I had two students who fit into this category. Student #1 had a 3.4 GPA at a good public high school and a superscore on the PSAT Exam of 142. After completing my SAT Prep Class, he scored a 1650 on a full SAT Exam. Student #2 had a 4.3 GPA with an academic ranking of #2 in an IB

program at a private school. She had a superscore of 145 (1450 adjusted) on her PSAT, and the same range for her very recent SAT Exam. After completing my SAT Prep Class, she scored over 2000 on her SAT. What makes the difference? The keys for these improvements were building confidence, learning new ways to find correct answers, following my detailed essay guide, learning my revolutionary way to score in math through “Quick Solve,” and a balance between skill-development, concentrated practice, and not making “silly mistakes.” It is very gratifying to see everything “click” for a student with their finally being able to “score their best.” I think part of achieving these results year after year is the definition of “success” that every student learns in my class. Success on the SAT or the ACT is defined as, “When a student walks out of the exam, that student says, ‘I have done my best given my priorities and my time available to prepare.”

MARCH 2015

Another important part is being able to quickly recognize where the student is with their academic foundation and test-taking abilities. All of my students are special in their own ways. A great part of my role is to quickly understand a student’s personality, preparation level, and how that student can best proceed. This usually takes about twenty minutes in our first tutoring class because I have seen so many combinations during the past five years of tutoring and can spot the key characteristics very quickly. When should these needs be addressed? Many parents want tutoring during the school year, which works well although most students are very limited in the time they have to study outside of our classes. Others prefer tutoring over the summer, where students can really focus on building their knowledge or skills – although this type of student also needs to review prior to taking the exam(s) in the fall. For summer students, I do have an optional “two class final review” to refresh their memories and test-taking skills if needed.

strikes, you can count on Theta Electric in your darkest hour to help turn on the lights! Customers Love Theta Electric! Angie’s List member and Theta Electric customer Anna Marie Dunn of Safety Harbor used Theta to replace an outdated electrical control panel that was put on the list of uninsurable items by Citizens Insurance. She writes, “I called Theta Electric on Tuesday morning (9/2) and spoke to a well versed customer service person. She shared information about Theta Electric, including that their electricians had background checks, which I appreciated. Once I shared with her what I needed she promptly made the

appointment for the panel replacement for the very next day (9/3). That afternoon (9/2) Keith Sutter called to ask if he could come by to review the needs of the job, to ensure that when he arrived on 9/3 he all of the needed parts (no charge), I said yes and Keith arrived at the agreed upon time. Keith arrived at the scheduled time on 9/3 and promptly began the job. Partway into the job Keith shared that he had found an issue with wiring from the pool into the panel, it had been done incorrectly. He needed parts and returned in less than a half an hour with the needed parts to complete the job. The job was completed within the amount of time I was told it would take AND at the price that I was quoted! Keith Sutter was professional, friendly and left the work area clean and neat, I could not have asked for a better service person to take care of our home’s electrical needs. No matter the size of your electrical project, I gladly recommend both Keith and Theta Electric to anyone needing any type of electrical work for their home or business.” Michelle Parnofiello of Clearwater, also is an Angie’s List member, used Theta Electric to install some

outlets, ceiling fans and lights (both interior and exterior) and to replace a new electric panel box that was up to code. Michelle says, “Theta Electric was wonderful. I had bought my home (first-time home owner). I was new to all of the renovations. I was referred to Theta by my realtor. I had major work needing to be done, since the house I bought had no ceiling lights or fans and I really wanted that in my home. Our technician was amazing, he was detailed in the work he did, very friendly and accommodating. Even when we asked for extra things to be done he was obliging and made the time to complete the job and explain everything to us. I will continue to use Theta for any electrical work I need done.” Another happy customer and Angie’s List reviewer, Darby Suess of Clearwater, used Theta Electric to upgrade an electrical service panel and to wire a kitchen remodel and a gas tankless water heater. Darby says, “Theta Electric is outstanding. They are professional, thorough, meticulous, and prompt. They always arrive on time and do what they say they are going to do. They are skilled in the most up to date techniques and materials. They did an excellent job on our service up-

grade (house built in 1937) and beautiful work on our kitchen remodel–– not easy with plaster and lathe walls. They go to extra effort to hide wires and make everything aesthetically pleasing. John, the foreman, on our job was the greatest. Thank you THETA!” Cherishing its residential customers and knowing that all types of electrical issues come up at home, Theta Electric is ready to help with prompt and friendly service. So next time you need help with wiring a ceiling fan, or adding surge protection to your home or office, just call Theta Electric. You will love their old-fashioned values. Home Services, etc. Provides Peace of Mind While You are Away By Katie Thomas If you travel often or live here part-time, then you know the worry of leaving your home unattended for an extended period. Nothing will give you peace of mind like knowing your home is being looked after by Richard Snyder, the owner and operator of Home Services, etc. in Palm Harbor. Richard started Home Services, etc. in 2009 to provide the Tampa Bay area with a new kind of home service, one that caters to winter residents, business travelers and people who go on extended vacations. A 35-year resident of our area, Richard offers weekly, biweekly or monthly visits, and every single visit is documented with digital photographs that are emailed to the homeowner on the same day of the visit – every visit. There is a very important reason for this. Richard explains, “Florida law says that if you leave your house empty for six weeks or longer, that house is considered vacant or abandoned, and in the case of theft or damage, your insurance may not have to pay any claims you have. That is why I provide three ways to prove that a house isn’t aban-

He always performs a thorough walkthrough, checking and even “feeling” the house. “I touch things and make sure they work,” says Richard. “From the air conditioner to the water heater,

He checks out the inside for proper cooling (he had once found out that the AC failed and then came again to be at the home when the AC technician arrived), that there are no water issues, bug issues, and that everything appears in order. He also checks the exterior of the home picking up materials (newspapers, ads, etc.) that people have left at the front door making the house look unoccupied.
