Koizi Endless Hibachi & Sushi Eatery – All You Can Eat. One Price. Endless Possibilities for Delicious Dining & Fun! By Kim Thomas Do you love sushi? Are you mesmerized by the entertaining skills of a hibachi chef and the satisfaction of seeing your food prepared right before your very eyes, the tantalizing smell waking up your appetite? If you are nodding yes, then you are going to love dining at Koizi Endless Hibachi & Sushi Eatery, which is located at the Grand Trinity Plaza on Little Road in New Port Richey. This is a must-try restaurant and did I mention that for one price, your options are endless until your appetite is completely satiated! Koizi Endless Hibachi & Sushi Eatery opened in Trinity last year and will celebrate its one-year anniversary in May. It is the third location of this popular eatery to open in the Tampa Bay area. The first store opened in August of 2012 at The Pointe at Tampa Palms retail plaza, with the second location opening in Brandon in August 2014. Koizi is lively, vibrant and exciting! For many in the area, it is already a favorite place to dine. On a recent visit to Koizi, I met an exuberant and very well behaved group of boys in the Pre-Servant group from New Port Richey’s St. Verena Coptic Orthodox Church, who were there with a couple of mothers and their group leader Demiana Youssef, who brings the boys several times a month to Koizi. Two chefs at the hibachi table kept this group laughing and happy and it was clear that they loved the food! When asked what they liked about coming to Koizi, Joseph answered, “Plain, good food!” while Kirolos loves how much fun it is, stating, “They entertain us. It’s pretty amazing!” I noticed that even though this large group was sitting at the hibachi table with their own chefs, they also were enjoying a nice variety of sushi rolls from the sushi bar. That is another thing that is so great about Koizi Endless Hibachi and Sushi Eatery – you can order all-you-can-eat sushi rolls, even if your group of friends prefers endless hibachi and it is no problem to be seated together. Koizi makes it affordable for diners to explore the menu and experience a variety of items, and is a great place to dine whether you are a lone diner or

10

bringing a large group. Hospitality & Affordable Dining! Hospitality is done right at Koizi! Manager Mike Li makes sure that every customer has a great experience. All of the food at Koizi is prepared fresh and made-to-order. The sushi chefs are busy continually creating fresh sushi rolls that truly are as endless as your appetite! Forget about what you think you know about all-you-can-eat restaurants because Koizi is an entirely different concept! If “all-you-can-eat” brings to mind heaps of food in trays served buffet-style – forget about it! Koizi is a full-service restaurant, where your food is cooked to order from the freshest, healthiest ingredients. At Koizi Endless Hibachi & Sushi Eatery, you’ll receive impeccable service, and can enjoy all-you-can-eat from the Hibachi grill, all-you-can-eat sushi rolls, or all-you-can-eat entrees – all for one low price! Dine-in prices are only $9.95 for lunch during the hours of 11:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Dinner hours are from 3:30 until 10 p.m. and for just $17.95, you’ll have endless options from the expanded dinner menu, which includes specialty sushi rolls. On Sunday, from noon until 9 p.m., you can enjoy endless specialty rolls and dinner menu items for only $15.95. Senior citizens enjoy a discount and pay only $14.95 for dinner, on weeknights and Sundays. Koizi wants you to bring your appetite and fully enjoy yourself, but in an effort not to waste food, they ask that you only order what you can finish; a surcharge may be added to takehome items. Everything at Koizi tastes amazing so you probably will want to try it all, but with a menu this large, you’ll have to work out a system. I met one couple that makes Koizi a weekly date night so they can try every sushi roll and every entrée – he started at the top left, she started at the top right and they are working their way down the menu, one delicious meal at a time! My family loves sushi and they love Koizi! For my son’s 18th birthday, he wanted dinner at Koizi with his closest friends and my husband and I loved the $17.95 dinner price for allyou-can-eat sushi, sashimi and hibachi grill favorites. Let me tell you, three

football linemen can eat a lot of sushi and for us it was a great value! We enjoyed a fantastic meal where we could laugh and talk, and have a true celebration at a very affordable price. On another outing, my mother Priscilla and I tried the Christmas roll and Sexy

Girl rolls (available after 3:30 p.m.), which are lovely on a plate and a pop of scrumptiousness on the palate! Comprised of spicy tuna, tempura shrimp, cucumber salad, spicy mayonnaise, eel sauce and roe, mother and daughter agreed that the divinely tast-

ing Sexy Girl roll was our favorite! During my family’s visits, we’ve tried the tuna and salmon sashimi, the Boston roll, Dancing Krab roll, Alaskan roll, Christmas roll, Sexy Girl roll, Koizi roll, the list goes on and I don’t dare try to remember all the rolls my son and his friends devoured, but every visit makes us want to come again. We’ve tried Koizi’s Mongolian Beef and Mango Chicken, also delicious! There is no way to tell you about all the rolls available, not to mention the great variety of hibachi entrée items – Koizi offers an unbelievable selection, from appetizers and soups to noodle dishes, hibachi grill

items, and dessert and the menu is sure to have something for everyone. The all-you-can-eat price does not include drinks, but look for coupons in Koizi’s ads in Neighborhood News & Lifestyles that are good for free drinks for up to four people who order the $9.95 all-you-can-eat lunch and free domestic beer, house wine or sake for up to four dinner orders at $17.95. Koizi Endless Hibachi & Sushi Eatery is located at 4120 Little Road at the Grand Trinity Plaza in New Port Richey and can be reached at 727-376-1888.

By Marcy Sanford Tobacco Free Florida has been helping people quit smoking since 2006. But they don’t just help individuals quit; Tobacco Free Florida has a wide variety of resources to help businesses help their employees quit smoking. Their free “Benefits to Quit Worksite Toolkit” guides business owners through the steps to help create a tobacco free workplace. When employers help their employees quit smoking it creates a healthier workplace and also has a positive effect on the business’ profitability. Each employee that becomes tobacco free reduces the health care costs for a business and increases overall productivity. When Employees Use Tobacco,

14

Your Profits Go Up in Smoke: According to Tobacco Free Florida, recent studies of the private-sector in the United States have suggested that employees who smoke cost businesses, on average, more than $6,000 per year when compared to non-smoking employees. This cost to Florida businesses comes primarily in the form of increased health care costs and productivity losses. On average, health care costs for your employees who smoke are up to 34 percent higher than the cost for those who do not use tobacco. Every employee who smokes can cost your business an extra $2,056 a year in medical expenses. Additionally, under the Affordable Care Act, insurers could be able to charge up to 50 percent higher premiums for tobacco

users, which may further impact your bottom line. Tobacco use is also the leading contributor to lost productive work time. Florida businesses lose an average of $4,056 per smoker every year in lost productivity. Workers who smoke at least one pack of cigarettes a day have 75 percent more lost productive time than nonsmoking workers. Just three 15-minute smoke breaks a day add up to more than a week of lost time in just one year. Employees Will Appreciate Your Support: Most people want to quit smoking, but it is incredibly hard to do so. The average person tries to quit 8 to 11 times before they are successful. Many people feel like smoking is an addiction they cannot get rid of. But with the right help, resources, and

support, smokers and tobacco uses can quit successfully. As a business owner you have the chance to help make a positive impact on your employees. Tobacco Free Florida can provide you with successful programs to create a supportive work environment and introduce your employees to proven successful ways to quit. Throughout the program, Tobacco Free Florida will help you evaluate your employees’ progress and adapt when needed. Pasco County Schools Are Tobacco Free, Your Business Can Be To: One of the largest employers in Pasco County is going tobacco free with help from Tobacco Free Florida. As of July 1, 2016, all Pasco County Schools’ campuses including all owned or leased school buildings, grounds, campuses, housing, and property (in-

Trinity Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

cluding vehicles and buses) will be 100 percent tobacco-free. This change was a collaborative effort between Pasco County Schools, the School Health Advisory Committee, the Tobacco Free Partnership of Pasco County, and Students Working Against Tobacco. The new policy created with the help of Tobacco Free

Florida creates a supportive workplace culture for Pasco County School employees and offers them proven tobacco cessation resources to motivate them to succeed in quitting. Local Tobacco Free Florida Representative Georgia Brieck has been working with the school system for the past year, “I have served as a member of Pasco County Schools’ Employee Health and Wellness Committee. The committee has partnered with Tobacco Free Florida and the Florida Department of Health to offer resources to help employees ease into the process of becoming tobacco-free by July 2016. We know it can take multiple quit attempts before a tobacco user can successfully quit. As a committee we focus on creating a supportive environment and effective communication techniques and proving a range of cessation options and a variety of other strategies to help employees quit tobacco for good.”

Trinity Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

This past fall Pasco County Schools was awarded a Worksite Wellness Silver Award from the Florida Tobacco Cessation Alliance for their commitment and dedication to providing programs to help their employees quit tobacco. Tobacco Free Florida’s Programs Are Free To Your Business: It may be difficult to know where to start, so don’t hesitate to reach out to a local Tobacco Free Florida representative. They can assist you in identifying appropriate tobacco cessation treatment services for

your business and guide you through the steps to creating a supportive workplace for employees trying to quit tobacco. Best of all their help to you is free and it can have a big impact on your business’ profits and your employees’ lives. Jones & Company CPAs Trusted Partner for Businesses for 30 Years By Marcy Sanford Jones & Company CPAs P.A. has been a trusted resource and partner for businesses and individuals for 30 years. And while they are well known for their expert advice, accounting services, and training programs, you might not realize that Jones & Company CPAs P.A. can help you with more than bookkeeping and tax planning. Both managing partners, Patricia Jones and Traci Malik, are certified fraud examiners who can track down embezzled or missing funds – and, best of all, set up measures to prevent money from being stolen in the future. “We helped one non-profit organization where the bookkeeper was paying personal bills out of the organization’s account and an association where an employee was paying med-

18

ical bills out of the association’s fund. In both cases, it went on for more than a year,” said Pat. “Embezzling typically goes on for 18 months before someone is caught. The average business loses $50,000.” Traci says that if you notice changes in an employee’s lifestyle that don’t match up with their salary, there could be reason for concern. “Usually if the clothes someone wears or the car they drive changes and does not match up with the salary they are making, you should begin to ask questions.” Jones & Company CPAs recommends that employers always do a background check if they are hiring someone who handles money. “A business may be able to recover some of the money they have lost through insurance,” says Pat. “But usually the person that is caught does not have

Cyndel Villanueva, Mellisa Culver, Patricia Jones, Traci Malik, Cintia Nguyen & Charlin Ramirez welcome you to Jones & Company CPAs the money to pay back what they have stolen.” Traci says that forensic accounting can also be helpful when there are questions about assets during a divorce. “Many times we are looking for hidden assets that one partner is trying to keep from another, but we had one case where the husband thought he should get part of his wife’s stocks because he had been the one doing the

trading. However, through forensic accounting we discovered that he had actually lost money through his trades.” Both Patricia and Traci caution businesses that they should have a series of checks and balances in place to help prevent employees from stealing money. “We can set up internal controls for small businesses. It is important that you are proactive so you can

protect your business.” In addition to forensic accounting, Jones & Company CPAs P.A. offers a wide array of business services. They can help you hire a bookkeeper and even train your employees. “We have helped many clients hire bookkeepers,” says Patricia. “We can interview your candidates, test their skills, and perform a background check to make sure you are getting the best employee. We will also come to your business to set up QuickBooks and train your employees so they can use it properly.” No matter what you need as a small business owner, Jones & Company CPAs P.A. can help – tax services, accounting, consulting, business valuations, litigation support, new entity formation audit, review, and compilations. Jones & Company CPAs P. A. shows the same respect and attention to details to their individual clients as they do their business ones. “People may miss out on a lot of deductions and savings by doing their own taxes,” says Traci. “Even an online service may have errors. We want to make sure our clients avoid audit or any issues that may occur from an incorrect tax return and get them all the savings

they have coming to them.” Both Patricia and Traci are accredited with the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners for fraud examinations. CFEs have expert knowledge in the areas of fraud prevention and deterrence, fraudulent financial transactions, legal elements of fraud and fraud investigation methods. CFEs are trained to identify the warning signs that indicate evidence of fraud and fraud risk. Patricia was a member of the Florida Institute of CPAs Common Interest Realty Association (CIRA)Committee from 1998-2008. She has an extensive background in Condominium/Homeowner Association accounting and issues. The firm provides Auditing, Review and Compilation services to associations. The firm is a member of Community Association Institute (CAI). Patricia is accredited with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and holds the ABV designation. Both Patricia and Traci are accredited with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants’ CFF designation, Certified in Financial Forensics. The CFF credential is granted exclusively to CPAs who

demonstrate considerable expertise in forensic accounting through their knowledge, skills, and experience. The CFF encompasses fundamental and specialized forensic accounting skills that CPA practitioners apply in a variety of service areas, including: Bankruptcy; electronic data analysis; family law; valuations; fraud prevention, detection, and response; financial statement misrepresentation; and damages calculations. Both have also completed specialized training for Collaborative Divorce protocols. With Collaborative Divorce a couple engages a team of profession-

als to guide and help them through the transition of divorce. The team works to resolve the issues in a healthy and streamlined process. Jones & Company CPAs has two convenient locations. After a Long Day, Head to Escape Brewing Company for an Award-Winning Brew By Julie Kanehl If you’re a beer lover, you’ve got to head over to Escape Brewing Company, Trinity’s very own tap room and brewing company that creates their own signature flavors, and serves them up by 4 oz. pour, by pint, and, when you’re serious, by growler. Located at 9945 Trinity Boulevard right next to Brick Oven Pizzeria in the Trinity Oaks shopping center, Escape Brewing Company is the perfect place to relax, chill and enjoy a handcrafted brew. Escape Brewing Company is the creation of John McGregor and Matt Thompson, whose hobby for crafting their own beer became a passion, an obsession, and now the coolest place around to grab a drink. Both of them grew up in this area, went to FSU and went to work in the corporate world selling software, but at the end of the day, they decided to turn their obsession into a reality and ditch the corpo-

22

rate world; hence the name, Escape Brewing Company. They also have two great Brewers on staff, Rich Rodriguez and Sam Thompson. While ditching the day job might not be an option for all of us, having an amazing brew at the end of the day, thankfully, is. So, take a bunch of great guys, add a ton of research, a three-barrel brewing system, a fervor for flavor, and a commitment to the community, and you’ve got a recipe for success. Escape Brewing Company is a nanobrewery, where everything you taste is made right there in-house. Escape Brewing brews enough beer to offer between 8-12 of their unique beers on tap, all the while offering their brews to local restaurants like Brass Tap in Trinity and Craft Street Kitchen, Zen Forest, Grill 54, Zim Zari, Brix 33, Bonefish in Trinity and The Stadium Restaurant. That’s right, not only locally brewing and serving craft beer, Escape Brewing Company is distributing due to demand!

John says, “You can also find our beer in restaurants and bars throughout Tarpon Springs, Dunedin, Seminole Heights, Tampa and St Pete.” While it’s located in the Trinity Oaks shopping plaza, the atmosphere at Escape Brewing Company’s tap room is urban and functional, since it is an actual working brewery. In fact, the taproom is only open Wednesday through Sunday, so that the rest of the week can be spent brewing up new varieties and old favorites. While there’s music playing and a TV on, it’s less “bar” and distinctly a taproom. You might find people playing a rugged version of Jenga, or throwing beanbags at the corn hole boards on the patio. It’s chill; it’s authentic and sincere. Honestly, it’s different, and people love it. They also love grabbing some pizza next door at Brick Oven, and then grabbing their brew at Escape Brewing Company. Matt says, “It’s a perfect, symbiotic relationship, since we don’t offer any food and stick to the craft beer!”

Here is what I really like about their beers; the brew master actually varies the flavor profile depending on what is being brewed (as they should). Some unnamed local brewers have a similar flavor profile no

at Escape Brewing Company. When asked what makes their beer distinct, John McGregor said, “We’ve been told that our beer is well balanced and approachable, even our IPA.” Adding, “We have a passion for our beer and for the research we put into it. We are proud to be in this community, too. We grew up here, our kids are growing up here, and this is what we wanted. A place where we can be accessible as owners, where the community knows us, we know the community.”

All the beers are good but my favorites are The Other West Coast, Saison, and Milky Stout.” Wait, did he say, “The Other West Coast? Milky Stout?” Yep, when you handcraft your beer in small batches, you can add unique flavors – think warm flavors like vanilla and chocolate, or local flavors like citrus, many of which are grown organically. Then you get to name them! It’s these unique recipes that make craft beer so

spectacular, and Escape Brewing has a menu to suit all tastes and palates. Craft beer has taken off all over the world, and now, Trinity is on the map, because Escape Brewing has won an award for one of their most popular brews, called The Other West Coast IPA. In fact, The Other West Coast IPA is a 2016 Gold Medal Winner in Best Beer of Florida Competition! Voted Best IPA in the State of Florida, this beer is a must try! Other favorite brews at Escape

Brewing Company include: Goofy Footed Wheat Ale, Easy Goin Session IPA, High Fen Robust Porter (with chocolate undertones!), Diversion India Pale Ale, Indiscretion Double IPA, and my favorite, when they brew it, the Brown Chicken Brown Cow Brown Ale. If you have no idea where to start, no worries! The owners are often onsite, and they love to share their passion for beer. The bartenders are really well versed in all their different brews, as well, so if you’re new to craft beer, you won’t be for long. There’s a craft beer to suit your taste

If you’re looking for an amazing place to grab a craft brew, come to Escape Brewing Company in Trinity. They are located at 9945 Trinity Blvd. (next to Brick Oven Pizzeria) in the Trinity Oaks shopping center. For more information, call (727) 807-6092, find them on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or online at www.escapebrewingcompany.com. Escape Brewing Company is closed Monday and Tuesday for brewing; taproom is open Wednesday and Thursday, 4 p.m. – 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 12 p.m. – 11 p.m., and 12 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Sunday.

And the Award Goes To…Ann Poole of Heritage Springs Chosen for the Trinity Family Physicians’ Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award By Kim Thomas Making a difference matters, and when we hear about those very special people who tirelessly work to help others, it inspires us to do what we can to try to make a difference on an individual level. That is why local doctors and husband-and-wife team, Stephanie Eldridge, MD and Amir Shirmohammad, MD decided to come up with a way to recognize individuals who live here in Tampa Bay and make a difference for others with their Trinity Family Physicians’ Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award. Neighborhood News & Lifestyles is honored to have been chosen by Trinity Family Physicians to help search for nominees and to share these inspiring stories with our readers and we are excited to announce that Ann Poole of Heritage Springs is the most recent recipient of the Trinity Family Physicians’ Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award. Dr. Eldridge and Dr. “Shirmo” (as he is known to most of

26

his patients and to many Heritage Springs residents) have been a part of many fundraising events sponsored at Heritage Springs and have great respect for Ann Poole due to her work with the Special Olympics of Pasco County. Dr. Shirmo says that since he and Dr. Eldridge have been supporters of the Special Olympics (since 2008), Ann has helped to raise $20,000 a year on average, and this year, $25,500 was raised. Ann Poole, a little fireball of energy, has what I call “good vibes” and she has been a true force behind the Pasco County Special Olympics for 13 years, but she gives a lot of the credit to her neighbors at Heritage Springs. “There is just something special about the people of Heritage Springs,” says Ann. “I’ve been living there 15 years and when it comes to the Special Olympics, they open their hearts and their wallets and checkbooks!” Ann truly loves life and when she isn’t in her dancing shoes – she is a dancer with Silver Follies – she is busy with many volunteer projects. She has

definitely helped to make a difference for the Special Olympic athletes of Pasco County. In its first year, Night at the Races raised $1200 and now fifteen years later, that sum is raised to more than $25,000 and over the past 15 years, Night at the Races has given more than $240,000 to Special Olympics of Pasco County. Night at the Races, held annually in January at Heritage Springs, is the largest fundraiser for the Pasco County Special Olympics. This year’s event was attended by 270 people, and part of the proceeds raised were used to sponsor some Land O’ Lakes kids to travel to California where they will compete at the World Special Olympics! “The Special Olympics does so much for these kids,” says Dr. Shirmo. “Anne invites some of the athletes to come out and talk to the Ann Poole, Recipient of the Trinity sponsors every year, and it is always a Family Physicians Tampa Bay Making A tearjerker for everyone.” Dr. Shirmo Difference Award with and Ann shared how proud they are Dr. Amir Shirmohammad

of Elise, who has Down’s Syndrome and for years has played a big part in helping with Night at the Races. Elise spoke along with 28-year-old Mark Miller who is blind and competes in basketball and golf with the assistance of a ringing bell. Ann says, “Sometimes I go over to Seven Springs Middle School where they do a lot of practicing,” shares Ann. “I stand there in awe of these kids and the excitement they have to do this.” Another thing Ann loves about her neighbors in Heritage Springs, “They recognize our sponsors and support them!” So get your budgets in order to be part of Night at the Races in 2017 – Neighborhood News & Lifestyles will be getting back in touch with Ann later in the year and will let readers know how they can help. Dr. Shirmo said to Ann, “Dr. Eldridge and I are very excited to present you with the Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award and on behalf of myself and the community, I want to thank you. Every year we have something exciting to look forward to. You inspire us and you inspire the community. If you’d like to help, email Anne Poole: annpoole925@hotmail.com.

The Florida Cancer Affiliates New Port Richey center is proud to provide patients with highly sophisticated radiation therapy technology – Elekta Infinity with Agility, a revolutionary radiation treatment system that employs Elekta VMAT™ technology, an exciting treatment option for cancer patients that promises to significantly improve patients’ experience and the

30

quality of care. Using the revolutionary Agility™ Multi-leaf Collimator, tumors are more precisely defined than ever before, resulting in less impact on healthy tissue and exponentially less radiation transmission to the patient. Elekta Infinity offers Florida Cancer Affiliates’ patients dramatically shorter treatment times than the more conventional intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) offered by many cancer centers. Treatments as fast as two minutes improve patient comfort by reducing time spent on the treatment table. With treatment times so short, the risk of clinically significant patient motion is greatly reduced. Patients can spend less time in the clinic and more time living their lives. In addition to the treatment programs, Florida Cancer Affiliates is united in healing with the US Oncology Network, one of the nation’s largest community-based cancer treatment and research networks. This affiliation enables Florida Cancer Associates to bring the knowledge and expertise of nearly 1,300 providers to

Learn More about the Health Benefits of Chinese Tea at Maharajh Acupuncture and Herb Shoppe Maharajh Acupuncture and Herb Shoppe, located at 5805 Main Street in downtown New Port Richey, treated customers to an unforgettable tea tasting experience with Jacky Lee and Zen Tea on Thursday, Feb. 18. Jacky Lee is an artist, entrepreneur and tea connoisseur and he is well known in the advertising and art world in China. When Jacky Lee was in China a few years ago, he was painting in a very rural and remote part of the country. He was staying with a local family in a poor village in the mountains where there was no electricity. When the villagers offered him tea, they heated with a fire. Lee noticed the wood they were burning was very thick and aromatic, just like the tea he was drinking. He asked what kind of wood it was, and the villagers said it was the wood of the tea trees in the forest. Lee asked to see them, and the villagers took him into the forest. He realized the value of such a rare wildharvested crop where the tea tree ages

As science has evolved, more modern equipment is used to pick the leaves, but the story still goes on. After hearing stories about the tea and learning about the different as-

pects of tea and how they benefit the body, Lee also painted. He explained that tea is not only good for the body, but also for the mind and spirit. Old McMicky’s Farm $30,000 ‘Mission I Do’ Military Dream Wedding Winners Sam and Chris Married in February Brides amputee brother who was saved by the groom acted as best man Submitted Over 100 guests gathered at Old McMicky's Farm to witness the wedding of a loving and deserving couple, Samantha Dilberian & Christopher St Onge. Sam and Chris are the winners of the 3rd "Mission I Do" $30k Dream Wedding Giveaway. The Farm received dozens of entries from local deserving military couples and narrowed the entries to 4 worthy couples. In November, voting was opened to the public and over 65,000 votes were received. Samantha Dilberian & Christopher St Onge have a story strait out of a Hollywood movie. In 2010, Samantha’s brother Bryan graduated basic training and was stationed in Fort Drum, NY. He showed Samantha’s picture to Sgt. Christopher St. Onge in an effort to get himself out of doing pushups. It must have worked because Samantha soon got a friend request on Facebook. Bryan and Chris deployed together to Afghanistan in March 2011. Just a few months later, on July 1, 2011 their squad was hit by an I.E.D. killing SPC Waters, and wounding Samantha’s brother, Bryan. Samantha’s family was told Bryan had lost both legs and left arm and a lot of blood, but was stable. Samantha received message after message filled with support, love prayers, shoulders to lean on, but then a familiar name came through her inbox. It was Chris, checking in on Bryan’s progress. How good it was to see his name. Someone that was there with Bryan, someone who helped save his life. Chris and Samantha often spoke. He checked in on Bryan, she asked how

34

the rest of their deployment was going. Little conversations that brought Samantha the most comfort she had felt in months. After Bryan healed, he could not wait to get back to his unit in Fort Drum. Samantha made the trip with him, and of course got to spend some time with Chris. Chris and Samantha started dating, but could only see each other on weekends due to their work schedules and the long distance. It was a 6-hour drive from Brooklyn to Fort Drum, but they made the trip almost every weekend. In December 2012, Chris got recruiting orders to Tampa and asked Samantha to join him. She had to leave her family and her life, but there was no hesitation. She knew Chris was the one

For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • www.NNLFlorida.com

for her, and she knew it was time for them to start our lives together. This past August, on their 3-year anniversary, Chris proposed. A few weeks later, Chris received an e-mail announcing a dream wedding giveaway from Old McMicky’s farm in Odessa, FL. It couldn’t have been more perfect timing. Chris is a true hero, a bronze star recipient. There is no one more deserving. “This wedding gift is in appreciation of the service and sacrifice of those who currently serve or have served in our military. It is my firm belief that everyone who serves in our military is helping to keep our families safe, so we thought one way to show our appreciation is to help them to start families of their own.” said Ralph Zuckerman. Old McMicky’s Farm is thankful for the generosity of all of our vendor partners and media partners who help

The Farm also thanks Brigadier General Gary Brown, USMC retired and Vincent Jackson of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for making the PSA video announcing “Mission I Do’, and a special thanks to Blue Skies Events for donating wedding coordination at the Farm for all four couples. People for Haiti – The Work Continues Six Years After Disaster

People for Haiti is a non-profit organization founded six years age by two local doctors January 12, 2010 marked the date that Haiti was devastated by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake, leaving 220,000 people dead and 300,000 injured with little hope for medical aid. The world watched and grieved with Haiti, and one group in Tampa Bay joined in the efforts to bring aid to Haiti. Six years later, People For Haiti (PFH), a Tampa Bay Area based

38

non-profit medical mission is still making a difference in Haiti. On January 12th, 2016, in honor of the earthquake anniversary, People For Haiti launched a fundraiser to help continue mission trips. The average cost of patient care is just $5 per person. PFH is asking that people visit the website (www.peopleforhaiti.com) or the People For Haiti Facebook

page to help the organization to continue to bring aid to the Haiti. Created on January 28, 2010 by two local doctors from the Tampa Bay area, PFH has completed 31 mission trips with volunteers from the medical profession, as well as ordinary citizens with the common goal to help the Haitian people. During these mission trips, the doctors and nurses volun-

teering with PFH has administered free medical care to over 33,000 Haitian citizens, and have performed hundreds of free surgeries and saved countless lives. PFH receives donated goods and medicine on a regular basis that they hand carry to Haiti. In April of this 2015, PFH treated a baby named Myson, who was in critical condition due to a congenital heart

condition. Our President of Clinic Operations, Christine Hashim, took the baby to four different hospitals in Port Au Prince. He was finally sent to have surgery in Grand Cayman. We are pleased to report that he made it through the surgery and is thriving and getting stronger every day! This year, EKO Devices donated a state of the art digital stethoscope to use on their patients. This allows doctors to virtually diagnose patients. They can take vital signs, upload them, and send them over to specialists in the United States for a consultation. A goal of People For Haiti is to set up virtual kiosks so that PFH staff can communicate with Haitian medical personnel when they are not in Haiti. This is a first step toward that goal and is a wonderful tool for them. About People For Haiti: People For Haiti is a Tampa based non-profit organization that administers free health care to the Haitian people on a regular basis. Its founders, Dr. Leo Vieira and his wife Guiga Vieira, and Dr. Robert Ferreira felt helpless when they heard the unfathomable news that January day in 2010. Despite many obstacles, the two doctors

found their way to Haiti, while Guiga initiated grassroots support from home. Their hearts were united and within them arose a dream. Today, People for Haiti travels to Haiti 4-5 times a year on medical and surgical mission trips. The organization is now led by Tammy Denbo, Christine Hashim and Dr. Lonnie Klein. Tammy Denbo is former Tampa Bay Buccaneers cheerleader and an attorney at law. Tammy was so inspired by her mission trips with PFH, that she went back to school to get a medical education and she recently graduated as a paramedic. Now, she feels she can be of more assistance on her trips to Haiti. She loves that former Buccaneers cheerleaders continue to join her in Haiti. Christine Hashim, a nurse anesthetist and nurse practitioner from New Port Richey, presides over all of the clinical operations for the group including providing 24-hour call access for medical problems. Lonnie Klein, MD serves as the board’s Medical Director. Lonnie is a Tampa Bay urologist who has been on several mission trips. PFH volunteers come from all walks of life. Doctors, nurses, lawyers, news reporters, housewives, students,

Trinity Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

teachers, professional cheerleaders and more join PFH on mission trips. The volunteers pay for their own travel and board. There are no paid employees and 100% of donations to People For Haiti go towards medicine and medical supplies for mission trips. Though the earthquake happened six years ago, PFH missionaries are continually given vivid reminders of this tragedy. Its ghosts lurk in every corner, the thousands of gravestones a stark reminder. In six years time, roads have been rebuilt, buildings are slowly being resurrected, and

life continues to go on. But, there is still a long way to go, and people are still suffering immensely and unnecessarily. PFH’s hope is that the Haitian people will one day be able to offer quality healthcare to their people on their own. Until that time, the organization is going there to offer aid, teach and support in any way possible. PFH’s goal is to train and equip the people of Haiti to one day, stand on their own feet again. Until then, People For Haiti hopes to offer them strength through renewed health. More info at peopleforhaiti.com.

“Denise Denver” Continued from page 1 world-famous amusement parks like Busch Gardens, Universal Studios, and of course Walt Disney World. There is great shopping in the area with International Plaza and Tampa Premium Outlets nearby. Homes in our area are also close to The Dali Museum, the Florida Holocaust Museum and popular aquariums. What’s more, people who live here are just minutes from schools, churches, hospitals, an international airport, the port of Tampa and of course, the world’s best beaches! Makes you glad to live here, doesn’t it? Denise says, “Real Estate is all about trust and relationship-building. I have more than 10 years of experience helping people in this area, and I receive a lot of referrals from clients who refer me to their friends and family!” If you’ve wanted to move, but have been waiting for the market to settle down, this is a great time to jump into action! Right now, Real Estate market values have come up, which means that your home will be worth more, and interest rates are low, so it’s a great time to buy a house, as

well. All in all, Denise says, “It’s a good time for both buyers and sellers!” Things to Know Before You List! When it comes to selling your house, many people will just tell you to “put your house on the market.” Well, there’s a whole lot more to that than you may think. It’s more than putting a sign in the yard, it’s about reaching your buyers, and today, buyers are more technologically savvy than ever. Between Real Estate apps, virtual walkthroughs, and the myriad of information about homes that are now available, it’s important to do it right the first time. “The most important thing,” says Denise, “before you even list with an agent, is to have an agent come over so that they can give you ideas and suggestions on getting your house ready, because once you list it, it’s on MLS, and your first shot is your best shot. It is very important to pick the right price at the get-go.” What Denise brings to the table is all of the important information about the market in your particular neighborhood. She will show you “comps” or comparison prices of homes that have sold in your area, how quickly they sold, and what amenities each

Realtor Denise Denver, pictured here with her children Gregory & Brittany, knows the Tampa Bay Area; after all, she raised her family here. home had in comparison with yours. This is a fantastic way of making sure that your home will sell at a fair price within a short amount of time. She explains that the reason it is so important to choose the right price at the beginning, is that once the house is on MLS or “listed,” MLS documents what the price is, and how long it has been on the market. If you price too high for the market, your house may sit for longer than the average home. When that happens, many

buyers may jump to the incorrect conclusion that there’s something wrong with the home. If you price too low, and then decide to raise it, the first price has still been documented, and the home will become difficult to sell. Denise Denver has other tips can make for a quick-sell, and advises, “Staging is very important. When someone walks through a home, they want to envision living there, so removing clutter, taking down personal photos and making sure you don’t

Tampa Bay has it all - gorgeous vistas, great shopping, theme parks, exciting sports teams, beautiful beaches, top-notch restaurants, amazing concert venues and so much more! Denise Denver will help you find your dream home here! have valuable items out is extremely helpful. You want to make it as much like a model home as possible, so that buyers can envision living in that space.” Denise also recommends having your home inspected before listing, so that you know exactly what condition your home is in before you sell it. Many times, people think their home is in great condition, only to find out

during the inspection that many things need to be fixed before the buyer will move forward. Having an inspection done ahead of time can save you time and money, and gives buyers peace of mind. There’s also a home warranty that you can offer, which Denise says is important to do before even listing your house. Combining tips like these with a professional like Denise Denver equals results that work fast. In fact,

many homes, when priced right, sell within the first couple of weeks! Now is an Exciting Time to Buy! We are blessed to have a very diverse demographic of people, neighborhoods and lifestyles in our area. From homes that are nestled deep inside neighborhoods where kids ride their bikes and joggers run the trails, to sprawling acres where the horses

can wander, to gulf-view homes just minutes from shopping and restaurants, there’s a different kind of dream home for everyone. So, what’s keeping you from looking? With the interest rates low, now is a fantastic time to buy a home, and Denise Denver is the perfect companion to help you look. Denise knows this area like the back of her hand, which can be extremely helpful when moving to a new area of town, or for clients who are coming in to our area from somewhere else altogether. Denise does her best to work around your family’s budget, preferences and busy schedule, researching homes that fit your specific criteria, scheduling showings and walkthroughs, and doing the homework so you don’t have to. A RE/MAX TopProducer, Realtor Denise Denver makes it easy, so that all you have to do is fall in love with your new home. Homebound Heroes: Helping Our Veterans, One Home at a Time! By Matthew Selby It’s not everyday you meet someone who has a selfless mission to help others in need with no desire to line his own pockets. We’ve all become increasingly aware of so called charities that although may do some good, do so at the expense of making their owners and operators rich in the process. Roy “Bucky” Shell isn’t built that way. He saw too many of his friends come back from serving our country overseas only to be stuck battling a neverending inner war. After careful consideration upon what Bucky wanted to do for our Veterans, he came up with an idea. He decided to start Homebound Heroes, a privately funded, non-profit organization that provides mortgage-free homes to returning War Veterans. “Homebound Heroes is something I’m very proud of,” says Bucky. “It’s only in the beginning stages, but it has a huge potential. My goal is to eventually get it to a point where we can help hundreds of Veterans; we just need to get the word out. We are

44

dedicated to providing mortgage-free homes to returning War Veterans who have served our country. A majority of our returning heroes suffer from multiple levels of PTSD and have found it very difficult to make the transition back to a civilian lifestyle. Homebound Heroes was created to help relieve the pressure as they make one of the biggest investments of their lives. By providing a house for these brave veterans we can help them adapt to their next mission of succeeding in America and turning their new house into a home.” PTSD is an overwhelmingly big

problem for a large percentage of our veterans. It’s crippling for many, leaving them a shell of their former selves. Our heroes need help! Fed up with the lack of help our servicemen and women were receiving, Bucky decided to do something about it. Bucky was especially upset with organizations who claim to be “all in for Vets” but really are just all in for their salary. This is not the case with Homebound Heroes. Homebound Heroes is committed to ensuring that over 90% of all received donations goes directly towards providing mortgage-free housing for our Veterans. Homebound Heroes is currently working on providing two local Veterans with a mortgage-free home – Michael Yancey, a Veteran of the Army

National Guard and Marine Bobby Malina. Michael Yancey Michael joined the Army National Guard in July of 2003 then went to basic training and advanced individual training. In the summer of 2005 his unit was put on alert that they were going to be deploying to Iraq. During his first tour he took on many responsibilities. From defending Abu Ghraib prison and taking control of all detainees inside the facility to PSD (personal security detail) to convoy security. After returning home just a couple days before Christmas 2006 Michael started doing his weekend drill with his unit, which he contin-

ued for the next few years. Then, in early summer 2009 he was informed that the 53rd Infantry combat brigade was going to be deploying again and needed volunteers. “I made the decision to volunteer and by early 2010 I was on a plane headed overseas again,” says Michael. “Our mission was fob security at camp Patriot Kuwait. We were in charge of convoy security for all ammunition and explosives coming from our military boats going to the ammunition holding area.” “I saw many things that have changed my perception on life,” says Michael. “I am thankful for my understanding wife and my beautiful daughter. Joining the military was one of the best decisions I have made. It gave me a new sense of confidence and pride.”

Bobby Malina Growing up in Palm Harbor, Bobby has been an athlete his entire life. All County his senior year for football, Bobby was voted on the Pinellas County All Star Team. Bobby had scholarship offers to play college football, but in March of 2003, just a few months before graduation, the United States of America declared war on Iraq. After that he didn’t feel college was a top priority anymore and the following weekend he went to the recruiting station and stood outside for a few minutes and thought, “The Marines say they’re the best of the best; let’s do this.” Bobby went to boot camp in October 2003 and was meritoriously promoted to PFC (private first class; E-2, the rank above private) for superior work before graduation in January 2004. In his military career, Bobby

deployed three times and has been on 200+ convoys, 200+ security patrols (mounted/dismounted), and has escorted EODs to many weapon caches. On his 2nd tour to Iraq his vehicle was blown up by IED’s twice on Oct. 8, 2005 and Oct. 17, 2005. Bobby is very lucky to be alive. After returning home his 3rd time Bobby got out of the Marines. In that time the VA diagnosed him with PTSD and TBI (traumatic Brain Injury) from the explosions. “I didn’t think I needed to seek help until after a blackout where my brother told me I was going house to house in my neighborhood trying to clear them, calling for air strikes, and talking to people that weren’t there,” says Bobby. “Luckily I have a very understanding wife who tries to understand what I have been through. We just take it one day at a time and try not to dwell on the things that don’t go our way. I’m just happy I’m still alive and have the chance to see my son grow up.”

Many of Rumer’s designs have been featured in publications like Architectural Digest and House Trends Magazine. Each client has their own dream for their space, and Rumer’s expertise is making it come to life, whether they want a modern, sleek design or something more traditional. Right now is a unique and exciting time in the world of design because it really is about finding your own personal style. While clean lines are popular, the old world and traditional looks

never go out of style. Another popular style that’s trending is called “transitional.” Transitional blends modern and traditional styles together to form a look that is classic, clean and welcoming. Rumer says, “I have experience working with contemporary, transitional, traditional, old world and art deco designs.” Adding, “When we go into a space we look at its full potential, making it beautiful and functional as well.” Kristina Kaltsounis calls Rumer,

“The best designer in Tampa Bay!” When customers come into Authentic Concepts with an idea, Rumer and his professional staff help to bring all of the different design elements together that make the room come to life. Offering a free in-home estimate, Authentic Concepts measures the space and takes time with their customers to help them find their own unique vision for each space. Always mindful of each client’s budget, Rumer and his staff take a lot of time to make sure that everyone is on the same page during

Trinity Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

the design process. In fact, before any renovating even begins, clients are shown a design program on the computer that brings their new kitchen to life, just like they do on TV! Client Izadora Jaws said, “Elegance and sleekness throughout! Your clean and detailed work shows you truly care about your clients, your reputation but most importantly, you love what you do; that’s the difference between the best and the rest!” Authentic Concepts Offers Products that Last a Lifetime There’s nothing so dramatic and functional as the countertops you choose. Today, the options are endless, and the one that’s the hottest right now is something called quartz. From quartz to granite, and from tile to marble, there’s something out there for everyone. The question really is, which would look best in your home? Rumer says, “Our products will last. The only reason you would ever replace them is because you decided to change the look or concept of your

kitchen or bath.” Cabinets also make a dramatic impression and can be a real gamechanger in the way that your kitchen or bathroom looks and feels. Authentic Concepts offers high quality brands for your kitchen such as Dura Supreme cabinets and Cambria countertops. The March/April 2016 issue of Consumer Digest named Dura Supreme the “BEST BUY” in premium cabinetry for the second time, stating, “The Designer is a repeat Best Buy selection because of its combination of features. This is the only cabinet that we found that has all-plywood and solid-wood construction, comes with a lifetime warranty and has a plywood back panel that’s one-half of an inch thick, which is at least two times thicker than what other cabinets have. This model also has more wood species options than do most other cabinets.” Offering plumbing fixtures that are functional and elegant, flooring that will last a lifetime and light fixtures that will complete the space, Authentic Concepts is adept at taking all of these separate elements and putting them together in a way that only an artist and designer like Rumer and his team could. If you’re looking for a way to really make your home unique, why not have customized tile made just for you? Authentic Concepts is one of the exclusive Quemere International dealers, giving you a chance to have handmade tiles hand painted just for your home. Imagine what a conversation starter that would be, to have a hand painted backsplash in your kitchen! Heather Keith said, “I’m in love with my new kitchen. Glenn is the most awesome man to work with, talented and professional!” Right now, Authentic Concepts is offering an amazing incentive for their customers: 12 months, no payments and no interest when used in conjunction with a purchase of any size Cambria quartz countertop! That’s up to 55k, no interest, no payments for an entire year! What are you waiting for? From concept to creation, Authentic Concepts is ready to make your dream kitchen and bath a reality.
