I still had pep in my step hours after I took my first Jazzercise class at Jazzercise Westchase, located in the Lynmar Center on Race Track Road. Although truthfully, it was not my first Jazzercise class - I did go to a few with my mother back in the 80s. When I told Jazzercise Westchase co-owner and instructor Jill Fuget this, she laughed and told me, “a lot of people’s impression of Jazzercise is from the 80s but this is not the Jazzercise class that you remember.” And boy was she right! While Jazzercise has been around for 45 years, the classes have been evolving and changing every decade to keep participants interested, motivated, and healthy. See “Jazzercise” on page 18

Remembering our Friend Bruce Boore of Hattie’s Cafe and Beanery This isn’t an easy editorial piece. The community has lost a great man, and like so many of you whose lives Bruce has impacted, we’ve lost a friend. Not long after hearing about Hattie’s Cafe and Beanery closing its doors due to Bruce’s medical issues, Bruce Boore tragically passed away after a long, hard fight. Bruce had been battling Crohn’s disease, and over the years I’ve known him there were a few times flare ups sidelined him for a short time; but he would always be back to work not long after with a big smile on his face as if nothing was wrong. He never let anyone know how bad it really was because he wasn’t the type of guy that needed anyone to feel sorry for him. When we heard Hattie’s was shutting down due to Bruce’s health I knew it must be worse than normal, but I am still in shock that he’s actually gone. I honestly thought he was going to surprise us all and beat any health issues plaguing him and re-open the cafe. He was, and always will be, a spe-

cial man to so many people whose lives he became a part of. I first met Bruce in February 2013. I walked into Hattie’s Beanery looking for the owner so I could tell them all about my new publication I was starting in the Carrollwood area. He was gracious enough to listen to my pitch and give me feedback on what he thought. He wasn’t convinced that people from Carrollwood would drive past other cafes in the area to come visit him. I understood his

concerns and simply asked him to think about it and give me a chance. About 5 pm the same day Bruce called me back and said he wouldn’t mind giving me a shot for one month to see how it goes. Even though it wasn’t a long term contract, Bruce was the first business to believe in me by signing up to advertise, and it really meant a lot. Fast forward to December 2015 Bruce never missed an issue since he started! He loved our magazine, and was a major reason our publication grew over the past few years, because he was always telling other local businesses about his great experience with us. I’ll always be grateful for his kindness and regret never getting the chance to tell him how much it meant to me that he gave me a chance before anyone else did. We will never forget you Bruce. Thank you for providing this community with your wonderful soul and passion for some of the best coffee and delicious food this town has ever seen.

Realtor Gigi Gauthier is Truly “Dog’s Best Friend” By Deborah Bostock-Kelley When you buy or sell a home under the guidance of Charles Rutenberg Realtor Gigi Gauthier, you are getting 17 years of experience working with new home sales, short sales, bank owned properties, buyers, sellers and investors – a woman who loves helping her clients and making their experience a stress-free process. “I love helping people find their perfect home and meeting new people,” she explained. “I am knowledgeable on many different areas of real estate, not just one specific area.” With excellent interest rates available to buyers, Gigi helps clients maneuver through the process and leads them in the proper direction. With a background in new home construction, she will thoroughly and objectively evaluate your home’s condition and features to properly assess how it competes in the current market; she will also give tips and ideas about staging your home to show its maximum potential. She covers mostly residential sales in the Tampa Bay Area, favoring Westchase and surrounding communities - an area that she has lived in for 17 years. What you may not know is that with every home bought or sold, you are helping save the lives of dogs and cats rescued by her local nonprofit animal rescue. Gigi donates $500 to Paw Print Hearts, her 501c3 cat and dog rescue. Gigi founded her charity organization after witnessing firsthand as a volunteer how many dogs were euthanized in the Pet Resource Center, formerly Hillsborough County Animal Shelter. She decided not only to be the resource for families looking to find their perfect home, but provide homes for euthanasia listed dogs and

6

MARCH 2016

cats that were in need of a miracle. “From every home that I sell on either the buyer’s or seller’s side I will donate $500.00 to the rescue. That will go towards paying boarding fees or vet bills for dogs that would have otherwise been euthanized by our county shelter; instead we give them a second chance at finding their forever home.” The About Us section of Paw Print Hearts explains exactly why this very busy full-time realtor opened her heart to four-legged customers. “After watching great dogs die in high kill shelters, I decided to do something about it by partnering with out of state shelters who have space to take our dogs and find them their forever homes, or search for local homes for those that cannot go on transport by holding weekly adoption events.” An advocate for those that can’t speak, Gigi’s Paw Print Hearts has saved the lives of approximately 740 dogs and 90 cats since its inception in 2014. “We rescue all breed dogs. The majority of the dogs being euthanized every day at county shelters are pit bulls.” Gigi stressed that proper spaying and neutering by responsible owners would significantly lower the animal shelter population, especially for the larger breeds with poor, often unfounded, reputations like the pit bulls. She says, “Statistics show that 1 in 600 make it out alive from county shelters, but people continue to breed their dogs and not spay or neuter them.” Gigi currently has 1 cat and 30 dogs seeking their forever homes. If adopting is not possible, Paw Print Hearts seeks volunteers that can open their home for fostering the rescues. Gigi holds fundraising events to try to raise money and is always look-

ing for corporate sponsors or event locations that can help. She recommends checking her Facebook page and the website for upcoming fundraisers for her rescue. In addition, the nonprofit can use assistance in several other areas. The funds are used for transportation, boarding, vetting, medical treatment, and food for the animals that Gigi has saved, and for the future rescues. Anyone interested in volunteering, fostering, or adopting an animal can apply directly on the Paw Print Hearts website. “We need donations, company sponsors for our dogs or people interested in holding fundraising events. Volunteers are always needed, as well as foster homes for our animals,” Gigi explained. “Our mission is to rescue. Our dream is that some day we won’t have to.” For more information about Paw Print Hearts, to make a donation, volunteer, foster or rescue a dog or cat, visit their web page www.PawPrintHearts.com or Facebook at www.Facebook.com/PawPrintHearts.

Florida Orthopaedic Institute’s Sports Medicine Team Submitted Will Smith’s latest film “Concussions” brought a serious problem to light for professional athletes, but what happens when your son or daughter experiences a head injury? For Austin Hubbard “Concussions” was a real-life experience. During a Plant High School baseball game, the 17-year-old collided with another player in the outfield and was seriously injured. As the other player raced to catch the ball, his mouth hit Austin’s jaw and Austin’s face was badly torn up. Not only did Austin need surgery and stitches to repair his jaw, but he also sustained a severe concussion. A neurologist recommended that Austin and his family see Dr. Westerfield, a concussion expert and sports medicine physician from Florida Orthopaedic Institute. Austin was seen immediately and began his evaluation and treatment for his concussion symptoms. Using new computer software, ImPACT, Dr. Westerfield tested Austin’s memory, attention span, brain processing speed and reaction time to measure his post-injury symptoms and diagnose him properly. “Unlike most orthopedic injuries, you cannot always see the damage that has been done to the brain using an X-ray or CT scan,” says Dr. Westerfield. “Doctors who are certified in ImPACT can evaluate the ex-

8

MARCH 2016

tent of the injury and we also can create a customized treatment plan for the individual.” ImPACT can help answer difficult questions about an athlete's readiness to return to play, protecting them from the serious consequences of returning too soon, which helped Austin’s mother feel better about his return to baseball. While traditional neurological and radiologic procedures such as CT, MRI and EEG are helpful in identifying many serious concerns such as skull fractures, hematoma and contusions, they are not as useful in identifying the effects of concussion. “The ImPACT testing made me more comfortable and open to sending Austin back into the game only when I knew for sure that he was ready,” says Mrs. Hubbard. “I also appreciated Dr. Westerfield’s concern and patience with Austin. He answered all my questions and made sure that Austin did not get back onto the field before he was ready.” Submitted in 17 local schools, and they provide a physician on the sidelines at all high school games. This way, student athletes receive the same quality of care as the professional athletes that they aspire to be. Common signs and symptoms of concussions include: headache, temporary loss of consciousness, confusion, dizziness, nausea, fatigue and sensitivity to light and noise. Dr. Westerfield notes, “If you or

someone you know experiences these symptoms after head trauma, the best chance for a safe recovery is to take them to a concussion specialist, and if available in your area, an orthopedic urgent care facility is best.” Florida Orthopaedic Institute’s urgent care centers (located in Citrus Park and South Tampa) provide the community with highly trained orthopedic physicians for emergency care. This way, if injury occurs, patients can avoid long lines at emergency rooms and see a doctor with expertise in orthopedics, sports medicine and concussions. “I feel better knowing more about concussions because of this experience. I know more now so I can better protect myself and recognize the symptoms in myself and my teammates, and now I know where to go for help too,” said Austin. Experience the Amazing Power of Grace and Faith at Grace and Faith Church in Tampa By Marcy Sanford The members of Grace and Faith Church have seen first-hand examples of God’s miraculous work. Located at 12749 W. Hillsborough Avenue, Grace and Faith Church brings speakers to the Tampa church to tell of their encounters with God and the miracles that he has bestowed upon them. You don’t have to be a member of the church to come to one of their special speaker series, and Pastor Robert Scarallo would like to invite you to come experience the amazing power of grace and faith. Miraculously Healed, March 20, 10:30 a.m. In 1997 Dr. Tom Renfro, a wellrespected physician in Norton, Va., was diagnosed with the rarest form of lymphoma. By the time Tom received his diagnosis he was already in the final stage of the cancer and doctors told him and his family that he would not live and there was not anything they could do to help him. Over the next year, Tom’s cancer started overtaking his body, but his faith in God and the power of prayer never ceased. Months after he was diagnosed, tumors were visible all over his body and blood clots had begun targeting his major organs. Tom turned to the congregation at his church, his patients, and religious groups such as The 700 Club to help him pray. And after 40 days and 40 nights of prayer, a miracle happened. In an attempt to extend Tom’s life so he could spend Christmas with his family, doctors administered one dose of chemotherapy and the tumors began to instantly disappear. “Occasionally, you see things that you don’t have a good explanation

10

MARCH 2016

for,” says Dr. Woodley, one of Tom’s doctors. “This first round of chemotherapy, we were seeing responses in hours, where these lymph nodes were shrinking. I have never seen a response like this before. It was a rather dramatic experience.” Nineteen years later, Dr. Tom Renfro is still cancer free. He’ll be sharing his miraculous story about the amazing healing powers of God’s love the morning of March 20 at 10:30 at Grace and Faith Church. “As humans, we are fascinated with stories,” says Pastor Robert. “Our church is filled with people with stories. Everyone has their own crisis but you can be healed.” Being Kidnapped Saved Her Life, April 24, 10:30 a.m. In 2005, Ashley Smith’s life was in shambles. She was addicted to methamphetamines, had given up custody of her daughter to an aunt, and was living by herself in a small apartment when Brian Nichols shot himself out of custody, killing at least one deputy, a court employee, as well as the sitting judge, and an off-duty federal Agent he carjacked, before homeinvading Ashley and taking her hostage. A major news event in Atlanta, this event was also the basis for the motion picture “Captive”, which was produced by Paramount Pictures and recently released to theaters in 2015. Ashley decided that night to stop using drugs forever, “I was forced with the decision of whether or not I was going to use drugs with Brian Nichols that night. Drugs had been a way of life that I had let consume me for many years before that and I had a choice - whether I was going to use

them or not. It was almost as if Jesus took the body of Brian Nichols in that one moment and said, “Do you want to do this or do you want to have a different life?” Throughout the 7 hours that she was held captive, Ashley, who had been desperately trying to get her life back in order, talked to Brian about her life and her daughter and read a passage from the Bible and The Purpose Driven Life to him. Ashley helped Brian consider how God could use him if he turned himself in and the following morning he did so. On Sunday morning, April 24, at 10:30 Ashley will share the amazing story of how God changed not just one life but two that fateful evening. “Ashley’s story illustrates four spiritual truths that give us hope and encouragement for those difficult times in our lives,” says Pastor and Author Rick Warren. “First, no matter what bad decisions you’ve made, you don’t have to stay stuck in your past. Your past is past, and it’s never too late to start over. Second, God’s purpose for your life is greater than any

Pastor Robert Scarallo problems you’re going through. Third, the Bible really changes people. And finally, the fourth truth is that God has the power to help you over any addiction.” “At Grace and Faith Church we believe that grace will take you from where you are and faith will take you to where you’ve never been,” says Pas-

tor Robert. “God so loved the World means that it doesn’t matter if you’re the richest person on Wall Street or the poorest person in the world, every one needs Jesus and God can touch and fill the empty spots in your life.” Morning Interview on May 29th On May 29th Grace and Faith church will also be hosting a morning interview, followed by a 5 p.m. seminar with Dr. Caroline Leaf, one of the world’s modern pioneers of neuroplasticity, a scientific discovery that counters the former thinking that the human brain cannot rejuvenate itself, but rather responds with new brain

neuron regeneration to both positive and negative stimuli that we can significantly control! Dr Leaf authored the book "Switch Your Brain On," and the afternoon seminar is entitled "Detoxing Your Brain." A $20 registration fee is requested for participation at the afternoon seminar, which can be paid at the door. Pastor Robert and his family have their own first-hand experience with miracles. He says, “When my granddaughter was born prematurely, we were told she would be dead in the morning because her body was not producing oxygen. For more than 2 hours the machines she was hooked

up to could not find any oxygen in her blood at all. She was taken out of her incubator to give us the chance to hold her and say, ‘Goodbye.’ After 14 hours of intense prayer, all of her vitals came up. Today she is a happy, healthy, normal 2 year old. According to her doctors and nurses it was a miracle that she not only lived but did not suffer any brain damage.” The Pastor adds, “We see a lot of miracles in our church. God loves us and He wants to intervene in our lives. When you believe in miracles, you will begin to see them in your everyday

life. The bottom line of every story about a miracle is God cares, God hears, and God acts out of love.” Grace and Faith Church is located at 12749 W. Hillsborough Ave. Everyone is invited to attend the special speakers series or their contemporary church service Sundays at 10:30 a.m. Grace and Faith Church also has events and discipleship for people of all ages. By Julie Kanehl Forget what you think you know about assisted living, and discover the difference at The Watermark at Trinity. Currently under construction, The Watermark at Trinity, which is part of Watermark Retirement Communities, is well under way at 1960 Blue Fox Way, and they are already busy accepting reservations for Founding and Charter Residents. This incredibly beautiful new community is slated to open this Spring, and will include lush gardens, a packed activity schedule, a movie theater, Indulge Salon, nature trails, and that’s just a few of the things that new residents can look forward to. What’s more, they’re currently offering a sales incentive, so if you’re looking to be part of a community that caters to an active, fun-filled lifestyle, and also provides an amazing program for residents who qualify for Memory Care, call or visit The Watermark at Trinity right away. The accommodating and experienced staff is inviting anyone who is interested in The Watermark at Trinity to come to the sales office, just across

the street, at 10751 Maple Creek Drive, Suite 104. There, guests can choose from a variety of apartment floor plans, ask questions, and learn about some of the unique reasons that people all over the country choose Watermark Retirement Communities. Watermark Retirement Communities has 38 locations all over the United States – including three in the Tampa Bay Area - from Arizona to Washington State, and people are already very excited about this new community, as Watermark has built a reputation for providing an extraordinary living environment where residents and their families can thrive. Plus, they get it. They understand that when people leave their homes to move into a community such as this one, that doesn’t mean they have to leave their expectations behind. The Watermark at Trinity is going to be gorgeous, luxurious and staffed with experienced and qualified personnel 24 hours a day to meet any need you may have. Aileen Carlson, Executive Director of The Watermark at Trinity, has 15 years of experience working at another Watermark Retirement Commu-

nity, and says, “I’m excited about the opportunity to be the person who gets to spearhead the activities, the programming, the dining, and to help create the feel and the vibe of the community.” Right now at The Watermark at Trinity’s sales center, residents are picking out their new apartments, and are able to have the pick of the litter. To be part of the first group of people to live there is very exciting! Everything will be brand new! The Watermark at Trinity is in the process of

hiring a qualified team to be part of their staff, which means that The Watermark at Trinity will be the best of both worlds. The Watermark at Trinity Difference: Assisted Living Why choose The Watermark at Trinity? For one thing, they are creating a beautiful environment in which to live. Forget cramped, monotonous apartments that all look the same, Watermark understands and respects their residents and, in creating new

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

neighborhoods for them, have listened to what people prefer. We’re talking about apartments that have plenty of natural light, architectural and design elements that redefine what assisted living looks like, and upgrades to impress. The grounds are going to be immaculately kept, with lobbies, sitting areas and dining areas that give off the impression of living in a resort. It will feel that way too, as residents don’t need to worry about cleaning, maintenance, grounds keeping or security. The staff also takes care of the housekeeping, laundry, linens and more. All utilities are included as well, except for phone, Internet and cable, which can be added easily and affordably. The staff at The Watermark at Trinity takes care of it all; with the goal of letting the residents simply enjoy their retirement! Have I mentioned the food yet? Because the food at The Watermark at Trinity is bound to draw people in all by itself. No more cooking, no more dishes, The Watermark at Trinity has hired Chef Joshua Marlowe to create menus that are not only healthy, but beautiful and delicious as well. They even offer room service! Speaking of service, when you become a resident at The Watermark at Trinity, you now receive access to a trained staff that is available if you should need it, around the clock. With the staff acting as a liaison to your personal physician, you and your family can rest assured knowing that you are in good hands if the need for medical attention arises. While other assisted living centers around the globe create a rigid schedule to follow, Watermark has a totally different approach to assisted living. For example, in many places breakfast is served at a specific time and that’s it. Watermark believes that the community should adhere to your personal schedule and not the other way around. That means, if you like to enjoy your breakfast at

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

9:45 instead of 7:30 or vice versa, that can easily be arranged. It’s the simple things, sometimes, that make you feel at home. The Watermark at Trinity staff wants to do more than make you feel at home, they want you to relax and let them do the work. Don’t you deserve it? Offering regularly scheduled transportation, residents have access to places all over town, and The Watermark at Trinity staff is excited about all of the fantastic events that they are going to be putting on the calendar each month. Residents will have access to all kinds of exciting activities and classes. In fact, another unique program that Watermark has created is their Watermark University. Watermark University offers classes in just about anything you can imagine, from jewelry making to ballroom dancing, and from computer classes to classes where you can learn how to speak another language like Spanish or even sign language! The best part about Watermark University is that they understand that their residents have a wealth of knowledge to share, and many residents enjoy teaching classes about subjects that they know a lot about! Jennifer Naster is the Sales Director who helps people find their new home at The Watermark at Trinity. With many years of experience working for Watermark, Jennifer said, “One of our residents at another community taught a Watermark University class on seashells. She was an expert on shells and taught everyone about how shells are used in everything from décor to medicine. It was really interesting.” She added, “People love the opportunity to share what they know!” The Watermark at Trinity Redefines Memory Care For the many people who suffer from memory loss, dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, it’s truly important to provide a homelike environment that helps them feel happy, safe,

secure and well provided for. The Watermark at Trinity has an entire floor dedicated to Memory Care, and programs that help each resident live happy, fulfilled lives. Have you ever heard of Nayas? The word, “Naya” is an ancient Sanskrit word that means guide or person of wisdom, and The Watermark at Trinity will have many qualified Nayas on hand to act as guides for the Memory Care residents, guiding them through praise and approval. Watermark Retirement Communities partners with the National Council of Dementia Practitioners to train their Nayas. People with dementia are often confused, and Watermark has experts on hand to make sure that you or your loved one is well taken care of at all times, focusing on what each resident can do, instead of what has become difficult to do. Just like with residents in Assisted Living, the food provided to residents in Memory Care is outstanding, nutritious and expertly prepared. Watermark has even come up with a completely unique way to provide nutritious meals to people who have a difficult time eating independently because of cognitive or neuromuscular challenges. This is their Thrive Dining Program. In fact, they’ve revolutionized the way people with cognitive or physical disabilities eat by creating their own version of “Grind Dining™”, which basically takes a healthy, nutritious meal, ground into handheld one or twobite appetizer portions. It’s simple, it’s easy and it’s a fantastic solution to helping those who would have a much harder time eating nutritiously otherwise. This program gives confidence to those individuals who need it most, and is unique to Watermark. Residents of Memory Care are

active! That calendar is packed with fun activities that include many opportunities that are tailor-made for each person to receive some type of physical exercise. Watermark also uses music, art and dance to help people tap into their creative energy. Art is a wonderful way for people to communicate as well. Offering unique programs and amenities for the residents in Memory Care, such as a Personal Pantry Program, which allows families to supply their favorite snacks and foods, to providing outings that are typically unheard of in memory care environments, The Watermark at Trinity promises to help each resident make the very most of every day. If you or someone you love is interested in moving to a place that takes away the hassles and the chores, while providing a beautiful, safe, and exciting community to be part of, choose The Watermark at Trinity to call home. The Watermark at Trinity is being built at 1960 Blue Fox Way, Trinity, Florida 34655. For more information, call 727-493-4536 or visit their sales office just across the street at 10751 Maple Creek Drive, Suite 104, Trinity, FL 34655. “Surf Shack” Continued from page 1 amongst friends or family. Or mingle inside in their spacious indoor seating area, that can easily accommodate parties of all sizes. Taking over ownership in 2014, Steve Bishop has done an exceptional job of keeping true to the Surf Shack brand, while still adding his own unique touch and improving on areas to make it better than ever! Shortly after acquiring Surf Shack a former colleague of Steve’s, Ron Fuller, joined the team as a partner. Steve and Ron are no strangers to the restaurant business, having both had long careers culminating in executive positions in the industry. Most recently Ron and Steve served as CEO and COO of Crispers, a chain of fast casual restaurants based in Lakeland, Florida. As for the menu, all of the longtime favorites have remained the same, from their complimentary tortilla chips and house-made salsa all the way to their made-to-order-fresh squeezed margaritas with all-natural agave nectar. Using as many local and natural items as possible, Surf Shack

is all about creating items in fresh and vibrant flavors. What’s most impressive is the quality of food you can expect to get, for the exceptionally affordable price point which you can expect to pay! The fare at Surf Shack Coastal Kitchen ranges from burgers and salads to USDA Prime steaks, with many exotic options to choose from as well; but there’s one thing that really defines them – the tacos. They serve tacos in almost every way imaginable and the fish tacos are a true specialty. Thursdays are the big day at ‘The Shack’ when tacos start at $2 all day and if there is a line, the wait is worth it. If fish tacos aren’t for you, check out their filet mignon tacos – they are out of this world! You also have the option of combining filet and shrimp in the Surf and Turf Tacos that boast a distinct Hawaiian/Asian taste that is incredible. But, as a way to encourage people to try different tacos combinations throughout the week, you can now mix and match and order any of your favorite tacos a la carte any day of the week! Steve says, "Surf Shack is a really cool, beach-themed restaurant, with our biggest claim to fame being our gourmet tacos. We have 15 different

gourmet tacos on the menu - they are a huge hit amongst our customers. What amazes me is that you can do anything with tacos - from inexpensive to over the top, the possibilities are endless. I like tacos a lot better than eating a sandwich, because you don’t get hung up with all the heaviness of the bread.” Other fantastic menu options include their house-made New Orleans style Gumbo, their USDA prime handcut steak, their over-the-top S’mac and Cheese and their fresh, never frozen

Within the past six months, Steve has expanded his list of offerings to include catering as well, which has now comprised a huge part of his business. Perfect for office parties, get togethers and even fun, casual weddings, Surf Shack offers a taco bar, where they bring all their ingredients and allow guests the opportunity to build their own tacos. Not feeling too creative? Not to worry, they also provide menu cards for their different signature tacos so you can easily replicate your favorite Surf Shack taco.

“I think we are needed in a community like this,” says Steve. “People are wanting an independent restaurant that’s not just serving cookie cutter food that you many times find at different chain restaurants. But, at the same time, they want a restaurant that can continuously deliver consistent, quality food. Consistency is the key to owning a successful restaurant and I am fortunate to have a fantastic team working here to make sure everything runs as smoothly as possible. Our entire management team has been with

me since the day we started.” Surf Shack Coastal Kitchen is located at 12217 West Linebaugh Ave. in Westchase. Hours are Sun. – Wed. 11:30 a.m. – 10 p.m. and Thur. – Sat. 11:30 a.m. – 11 p.m. To order takeout, or to plan a catered event, call (813) 475-5916. or visit www.surfshackkitchen.com.
