Imagine creating a whole new lifestyle for yourself, one that takes you out of the suburbs and into the world of alpaca ranching. For many people in the United States, Alpaca ranching is becoming a new way of life, because once people spend time with the gentle-natured alpaca, a relative of the llama, they seem to fall in love. That’s exactly what happened to Frank and Brenda Crum, which is why they opened Golden Sprit Alpaca Ranch in Odessa, just over a decade ago. Their 100 percent working ranch is home to more than 200 alpacas, and they find their new lifestyle to be exciting, rewarding, and a lot of fun. Perhaps the best way to find out about alpaca is to come out to the ranch for a visit! There, people have the opportunity to meet these sweet, docile creatures, step See “Golden Spirit” on page 22.

Maybe you started the New Year with the goal of getting in shape but that beginning of the year enthusiasm has dwindled away and your new work out clothes haven’t seen much wear lately. If so, you’re not alone. More than 60 percent of people have stopped maintaining their resolutions after one month. For many people, the hardest part of exercise is finding something they enjoy. If that sounds like you, you should give Jazzercise a try. More like a dance party with good friends than an exercise routine, today’s Jazzercise class is not the one

you remember from the ‘80s. For 10 years Lutz Jazzercise Center at 19012 First St. SW has been offering Jazzercise classes and Personal Touch Boot Camp for women and men of all ages. Many of their members have been with them from the beginning because they find the classes motivating, challenging, and invigorating; plus, they work. “I started coming in 2012 to get in shape for my son’s wedding,” said Cecilia Rose. “I lost 38 pounds and have continued to come back. From The Editor Kim Thomas

Congratulations to Amanda Moore, Recipient of Trinity Family Physicians’ Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award By Kim Thomas Writing about the people who receive Trinity Family Physicians’ Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award always is inspiring, but this latest recipient truly humbled me and I believe Dr. Amir Shirmohammad (Dr. Shirmo) and Dr. Stephanie Eldridge at Trinity Family Physicians feel the same way. Fourteen-year-old Amanda Moore is an A student at Gulf High School, a volleyball player on her school’s team, a junior league bowler, and a philanthropist with a heart that will bowl you over! Selling candy at the local bowling alley, Amanda has raised more than $10,000 over the past four years, and every cent goes to helping families in need through her partnership with Pasco Kids First. This young lady is so impressive in her quest to help others that we hope reading her story will inspire you to make the effort to help Amanda help Pasco Kids First, and to give – even if it is just a little, because so many people have so little. So how does an ordinary child do something extraordinary? One box of candy at a time, that’s how. Amanda and her mom Amy love to bowl and both are on leagues, so Lane Glo on Old County Road 54 in New Port Richey is kind of a second home for them. Four years ago, young Amanda started selling candy bars for $1 each at Lane Glo to raise money for a tournament. Soon she’d sold enough boxes of candy (at a profit of $12 per box) to cover her costs. Amanda’s mom Amy recalls, “When we showed up See “Amanda” on page 20.

Put on Your Walking Shoes: Hiking Spree 2017 By Marcy Sanford This past November Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation kicked off Hiking Spree 2017, a new program to encourage residents to get out and take a hike in one of the beautiful parks we are blessed with in the area. “The program has been a huge success,” said Parks and Recreation Senior Event Coordinator Dana McDonald. “This is the first time we’ve done something like this in Hillsborough County and we’ve had a lot of great response from the community. Hiking Spree was suggested to us by an employee who used to live in Ohio where they had a similar program. We are really excited about the program as a way to get people outside exploring.” Hillsborough County has more than 100 recreational parks and hundreds of miles of hiking trails. Hiking Spree 2017 celebrates those trails. Through March 31, people who register with the program and hike any 8 of 19 designated trails will receive a medallion to put on their hiking stick

6

or an Access Hiker patch. New Tampa resident Claire Brantley earned her medallion in December and gained a new found love for hiking. “In July I had some bad health test results and I needed to lose weight. I had been successful with the Weight Watchers program in the past but have never combined exercise with the program because I’ve never enjoyed exercise. I am klutzy, have never found sport I enjoyed playing, and would rather be reading than working out.” Claire lost 30 pounds but knew that without exercise, the pounds would come back. Fortunately a friend took her on a hike and she enjoyed it. “I had fun and when I got home I googled hiking in Hillsborough and found the information about Hiking Spree.” The week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve Claire and two of her friends did at least one, sometimes two, hikes from the Hiking Spree list and earned their medallions. You can find a list of all the hikes and information to help you find the right trail for your skill level on the Hiking Spree website. They are rated

for difficulty from all-purpose to primitive and easy to strenuous. “The hikes on our list are just a sample of the trails we have in Hillsborough County,” said Dana. “We tried to pick ones from different sides of the County and these were specifically chosen because they are great hiking trails.” Some of the trails close to Lutz, Odessa, and Land ‘O Lakes include Lutz Lake Fern Trailhead, Lake Rogers, Violet Cury, and Cypress Creek. Claire highly recommends Violet Cury, “it is really lovely and beautiful,” as well as Lake Rogers, which she

says, is, “very unspoiled.” However her favorite has been Morris Bridge, “the Bald Cypress Trail is on the other side of Morris Bridge Road. The hike is beautiful, exquisite. You hike a mile into the woods and come to a gazebo overlooking the Hillsborough River. I have lived here for 18 years and never knew it existed and now it is my favorite place to go hike.” There are plenty of hiking selections throughout Hillsborough County and those looking for a day adventure may want to explore other areas of the County like the Golden Aster Scrub Preserve in Gibsonton

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

which is home to endangered plants and birds like the Florida golden aster and the Florida scrub jay. Dana says that more than 800 people have signed up with the program since it started and that the County will definitely do it again. “We’ve had about 250 people join us for guided hikes. In February we did a moonlight hike at Blackwater Creek. Lots of people did not realize these parks were there in their backyards. Next time we will highlight different parks and trails.” Many County parks, like Lettuce

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

Lake Park, hold program every weekend throughout the year with experts who can tell participants about the animals or plants they’ll encounter in the park or along the trails. It’s not too late to earn your Hiking Spree medallion. For more information about Hiking Spree and to register, visit Hillsborough County’s website at www.hillsboroughcounty.org. Maybe, like Claire – “It’s the first exercise in my life that I’ve really enjoyed.” – you’ll find a new hobby you love.

This kept me motivated to keep trying, and week after week I kept losing more weight. In just 5 months, I reached my goal of 80 pounds lost. I feel great! I went from a size 44 to 36. My overall health has improved dramatically. My doctor cut my blood pressure medication in half and took me off of my cholesterol medication completely. I have more energy to play with my kids and my golf game is a lot better. Now, almost 6 years later, I am still maintaining my weight loss. I could not have achieved this goal if it wasn’t for the motivation and support I received and still receive from the staff at Medi-Weightloss®. The doctors and nurses at the Lutz location are always motivating and are a huge help. They taught me how to live a healthy lifestyle despite my busy work schedule. They showed me that the options at Boston Market were great and even put together

meal options there that would fit with my eating plan.” At your initial consultation at Medi-Weightloss® you’ll receive a full medical exam, comprehensive

We enjoy watching our patients transform inside and out,” says owner Gerri Willet. “They not only look and feel better, but we know they are becoming healthier and decreasing their risk for developing obesity-related diseases. Our patients continually remind us ‘their success is our success.’” Medi-Weightloss® patient Erin Blackwell describes her “a-ha” moment, “It was on a flight a couple of years ago that the truth finally hit me. The seat’s armrests dug into my hips and when I went to fasten my seat belt, I could barely push the ends together. I realized then my weight was out of control. I knew my weight would get worse unless I did something. I had to try. After only one week, I was 8 pounds lighter and each week thereafter, the weight seemed to magically disappear. Everyday activities are no longer traumatic events. I truly feel like a different person. I’ve lost 106 pounds! My body fat and LDL cholesterol numbers have dropped dramatically and I now love the woman I see in the mirror. None of this would have been possible without Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

Odessa Soccer Club Has Recipe for Having Fun! Odessa Soccer Club is set to kick off its Spring Season on March 25. The club completed its inaugural season last December, and a League Champion was crowned. “One of the things that affirms we are doing well is when players return for the following season and tell their friends to come play, as well,” said Jim Young, league director. “The most important thing is for our kids to have fun,” Mr. Young added with emphasis on the word fun. League Director Young continues, “Our club has a recipe for having fun. We teach our players in order to have fun, they must do three things: play their best, pay attention, and obey their coaches, referees, teachers, and parents, etc. This is where success in our club transfers to what is valuable for the players’ futures. We call it Pay-Play-Obey!” Odessa Soccer Club’s Spring Season will offer two co-ed age divisions: 6-8 and 9-11. Teams will play a sevengame season, ending with a championship tournament on the last Saturday of the season, May 20.

16

The league will not play on Saturday, April 15 in observance of Easter weekend. All Saturday games and practices are held at 18105 Gunn Highway in Odessa. The league differs from other soccer programs in the area by offering an open league play platform, where players are not required to tryout to make the team, but all teams compete in the championship tournament at the end of the season. According to Mr. Young, “Having a championship tournament at the end of the season adds a layer of competition to the league that you do not find in recreation leagues. The additional competitive aspect is the catalyst that motivates players to develop more than they would in a recreation league.” “Players want to be on a competitive team, and our league allows all skill levels to compete since there are no try-outs,” Mr. Young added. Odessa Soccer Club teams will practice on Saturday mornings before their games. According to Mr. Young, “Families very much appreciate not

being required to practice during the week so the can spend time together, and students can focus on school work.” “Another strength of our program is we work to keep teams small. Smaller teams mean more playing team for each player. That translates to more fun and more development.” Mr. Young asserted. In addition to Saturday morning practices, new for the Spring season is an optional, weekly training academy practice, which will occur on a weeknight. “We will continue to strive to provide our families as much value as

“Amanda” Continued from page 3 without a box of candy, people wanted to know where the candy was. I said, you mean if we show up here with more candy, you’re going to keep buying it?” Enough people said yes and the Lane Glo managers liked that it was for a good cause, so Amy decided to let Amanda keep selling candy, but with their needs met, this single mom took the opportunity to help her daughter grow in ways that a ruler can’t measure. Amy shares, “I said why don’t you use the money you make to help people? I let her know how many families we could help.” Amanda was thrilled, so Amy started searching and was referred to Becky Bennett, MHA at Pasco Kids First Children’s Advocacy Center. This is a great fit because Becky Bennett has dedicated her career and life to helping families and children in Pasco County. It was Becky who sent a press release about Amanda’s fundraising to Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles, and knowing of the Trinity Family Physicians’ Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award, I nominated Amanda. Since then I’ve

20

been in contact with Becky, who says of Amanda, “She is amazing! And there is so much more... just wait until you hear all of the things she does in the community not only just for us. And she is an A student and champion bowler!” “Put Your Heart Into It” Just by selling candy at the bowling alley, Amanda began sponsoring families through Pasco Kids First in 2013 and has raised more than $10,000 to help families in need. Amanda has donated coats to patients at Good Samaritan Clinic and continues to volunteer weekly at James Malowe Elementary School. She has donated to Pasco Kids First’s Lunch with Santa. Once again, this past Christmas she was able to brings gifts to three families in Pasco Kids First Healthy Families Program. One story after another, Amanda and her mom Amy, help to bring joy to people, and not just children. Amy shares, “Amanda says, ‘Everyone deserves a Christmas,’ so we help the whole family.” Looking through a stack of photos at the many gifts through the years shows a multitude of toys, as well as tool sets, small appliances, household

Amy (left) and Amanda (center) pose with one of the families they donated gifts to in December 2016 necessities, and much more. Amy recalls, “The first young mother they asked us to help only asked for a mop and a broom –just basic necessities - and then we found out that she didn’t have a bed and the baby didn’t have a crib. We started telling people and were able to get them a bed and crib, too.” “A lot of kids my age don’t know what other people go through,” says

Amanda, who was once like that too. “The first year, I didn’t know what those families were like.” Another time, the call came from a caseworker working with a family in desperate need of a car seat. “We just hopped in the car and went to Walmart and were able to buy it for them.” Dr. Shirmo wanted to know what Trinity Family Physicians could do to

help, “What can we do to help you? What do you want, Amanda?” Her candid reply, “I don’t want people to just give me money, I want people to put their heart into it.” Donations Accepted at Trinity Family Physicians Dr. Shirmo and Dr. Eldridge are putting their hearts into it and Trinity Family Physicians’ office, located at 1817 Cypress Drive, Suite 101 in Trinity, is now a drop-off location for donations to Pasco Kids First and Amanda’s philanthropic candy sales. If you’d like to donate money for candy, please put it in a sealed envelope and leave at front desk. Also accepted are checks made out to Pasco Kids First (a non-profit so donations are tax deductible), which can be left with the front desk at Trinity Family Physicians. We contacted Becky Bennett at Pasco Kids First to get a list of needed items and compiled a list of items that can be left in the donation box at Trinity Family Physicians’ lobby. The following list of needed items were given to us by Becky Bennett at Pasco Kids First. NEEDED ITEMS Diapers, Children’s Under-

wear and Baby Supplies: In cases of sexual abuse, sometimes the children’s undergarments need to be taken for evidence or destroyed. Bus Passes: Used for families and teens to come to the Children’s Advocacy Center for trauma therapy appointments. Gift Cards and Journals for teens receiving counseling: Many times teens are overlooked when it comes to their personal needs and during the holidays. Child Safety Items (outlet plugs, cabinet locks, smoke detectors, etc.): Becky says, “We are actually actively looking for a donation (or funding to purchase) at least 50 door alarms for a campaign we are going to do with the Sheriff’s Office in April due to several child drowning deaths last year. Two mothers were arrested after their children died in ponds.” Checks: “Checks are always appreciated to assist us in purchasing the above when there is a need and to provide the needed therapy services to children who are not reimbursed by our state funders.” Donations also can be made online at www.PascoKidsFirst.org.

“Golden Spirit” Continued from page 1 into the life of ranching, visit the retail store, adopt, or even purchase an alpaca. At Golden Spirit Alpaca Ranch, you too can learn how to own and operate an alpaca ranch. The main ranch is located at 10937 Tarpon Springs Rd. in Odessa, while tours and the retail shop, EveryWear Alpaca, is located at 9317 Tarpon Springs Rd. Golden Spirit Alpaca Ranch is an experience, a lifestyle and an adventure all rolled into one. Alpaca Ranching is an Adventure of a Lifetime! Frank and Brenda Crum hadn’t envisioned themselves becoming alpaca ranchers, but when they found themselves with more than 75 acres of sprawling land in Odessa, they thought it was the perfect opportunity to try something new. Alpacas are playful animals with a great deal of personality, and frankly, people just love being around them. What’s more, they don’t require the level of attention that horses or other animals would require. You don’t need to ride them, milk them or train them. Known for being

22

adorable and cute, alpacas are even becoming popular pets for those who have enough space for them to roam. Brenda says, “We wanted to get involved with an animal that would offer a sustainable product, while being unique and personable. The alpaca is a very independent animal with varying personality traits. Understanding each animal’s unique personality has helped us build the framework of Golden Spirit. From the very beginning of working in the alpaca industry, I embarked on a journey of learning with Frank. We consulted with business leaders and veterinarians, researched feed and nutrition, and dove in to get our hands dirty. We soaked in as much information as possible by continuously attending shows and getting involved in industry associations. The time we spent learning from the animals and other leaders in the industry helped us with our ranch so much, which is why I now spend a lot of time sharing what I have learned with other alpaca enthusiasts. We are here to preserve the health of our animals, focus on quality fleece production and to share the knowledge we gain with the community.” Alpacas are prized for more than

their personalities; in fact, it’s their fleece, or fiber, that gets the majority of the attention. In comparison with the lamb, alpaca fiber has a hollow core and a lighter weight. Naturally lanolinfree, the fiber they produce is hypoallergenic, and therefore creates a fabric that is far less “itchy” than other fibers naturally produced by animals. Alpaca fiber is rated on its quality, and the quality depends on the breeding of the animal, which is why alpaca breeding is so important. Brenda says, “We take pride in focusing on the well-being, and the quality of the fleece when it comes to breeding our animals.” Adding, “When

MARCH 2017

it comes to alpaca fiber, there isn’t any mass manufacturing. It’s a cottage industry. It starts with individuals who collect the fleece and process it into yarn. The result is a quality that many people claim is better than cashmere.” What’s clear to any visitor to Golden Spirit Alpaca Ranch is the unparalleled dedication to their alpaca. While maintaining this clear focus and dedication to their wellbeing, they have also been able to build a reputation built on breeding some of the highest quality alpacas in the United States. In fact, many of the alpaca bred at Golden Spirit Alpaca Ranch earn awards for their quality of fleece.

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

Tour Golden Spirit Alpaca Ranch & Meet the Alpacas Golden Spirit is not normally open to the public, as it is a workingranch, but they offer regular tours of the ranch where their guests receive a guided tour, meet the alpacas, feel their famous fleece, and learn about what it means to adopt or even become an alpaca rancher. One local visitor said, “We had such a great experience on our tour! You can certainly tell the love they have for the alpacas, which are simply adorable! Great experience for kids and adults as well. We learned many new facts!” Offering tours for both small and large groups, guests are given the opportunity to shop at their aptly named, Every Wear Alpaca boutique at the conclusion of the visit. The clothing and the fiber from the alpaca can be used to make such beautiful products, that many people feel that a trip to the Golden Spirit Alpaca Ranch isn’t complete without a souvenir. A guest to Golden Spirit said, “The tour we had this morning was absolutely phenomenal. The alpacas were a complete joy to interact with. It was clear that they were happy and

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

healthy and receiving stellar care. This ranch is a hidden gem.” Adopt an Alpaca! While many people love the experience and the adventure of visiting Golden Spirit Alpaca Ranch, many people fall in love with them, just like the Crum family did, and they decide that they want to step into the adventure for themselves. One way to do this is to adopt an alpaca! For many people, this gives them the opportunity to interact with an alpaca without requiring them to own the land or have the expertise required in owning one. It’s a bit like a sponsorship! Brenda says, “By adopting one of our alpacas, people get the opportunity to be a part of the animal’s life, make a difference on the ranch, and are given opportunities to visit the animal right here at Golden Spirit!”

that’s the case, Brenda and Frank Crum will do everything they can to help foster an interest in this unique business and lifestyle – from buying your first alpaca to learning how to breed them, and most of all-how to give them a safe and healthy place to thrive. Golden Spirit even offers boarding opportunities for those alpaca owners who don’t have their own land. Educated, dedicated, award winning and accommodating, the owners of Golden Spirit Alpaca Ranch want to encourage others to experience the wonder of life on an alpaca ranch. If

this lifestyle is of interest, keep an eye on their website and Facebook page, for they offer informational events, hold galas and educational seminars regularly. For more information, please call (813) 382-5733, email info@goldenspiritalpaca.com, visit www.goldenspiritalpaca.com or check out their Facebook page! The Golden Spirit Alpaca Ranch is located at 10937 Tarpon Springs Rd., while tours and the EveryWear Alpaca retail shop is located at 9317 Tarpon Springs Rd., Odessa.

Learn The Ropes! Adoption is a wonderful opportunity for many locals who don’t have the means to own their own alpaca, but many people encounter the alpaca and know that their lives will never be the same. They know that they want to become alpaca ranchers themselves. If

Improve Your Life . . . Improve Your Hearing! By Carla Dubis

“Oh wow!” Those are the first words Dr. Judith Reese, Audiologist, hears when a patient of hers hears the TV audio streaming directly into their new hearing aids. “Oh wow,”also is often the first words from a patient’s spouse when they see that their loved one can hear the TV at a significantly lower volume than they usually have to set it, thanks to the technology that pairs hearing aids to TV volume. For someone who has helped hearing-impaired people almost 30 years in the Tampa Bay Area, Dr. Reese, too, says “Oh wow!” about the technology that keeps her job exciting. “It never gets old.” Dr. Judith L. Reese opened JC Audiology in 2005, more than 2,000 patients ago. Prior to that, she served as an audiologist at the James A. Haley and Bay Pines

28

Veterans Administration hospitals, as well as the University of South Florida, where she also taught future audiologists. Her passion for helping people hear better led her to open her own private practice where she can provide unbiased recommendations in an atmosphere that is warm, welcoming and comfortable. “Being a locally-owned small business allows me to provide the best patient care and customer service I can,” says Dr. Reese. “I have no corporate rules or home office in another country to meddle with. The only boss I have is the patient in front of me.” The desire to provide an exceptional level of personal care to the hearing-impaired is, indeed, personal with Dr. Reese. “My father, my husband, and other dear family members have endured hearing loss.” She shares, “What I recommend for my patients is no different than what I

For Ad Info Call (813) 928-6124 • info@NNLFlorida.com

would do for them.” Dr. Reese cites medical studies that conclude how important optimal hearing is to one’s overall health. A 2013 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, for example, showed that even mild hearing loss equates to “7 years of cognitive decline when compared to a similar age group with normal hearing.” Other research showed that hearing loss can lead to social isolation, depression and accelerated brain atrophy. “I know how important hearing is for overall quality of life,” says Dr. Reese. “Maintaining hearing health keeps our brains stimulated, which offers us overall happiness in our primary health.”

“Someone with untreated hearing loss can address these issues with hearing aids,” she adds. “The sooner hearing loss is treated, the better for one’s cognitive health and overall wellbeing.”

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

Dr. Reese is licensed by the State of Florida Department of Health and certified by the Board of the American Speech-LanguageHearing Association. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Audiology, and holds membership in the Florida Academy of Audiology and the Florida Speech-Language-Hearing Association, along with many other prestigious affiliations; patients can trust that they will receive the highest level of service at JC Audiology. Patients come to JC Audiology from all over the Tampa Bay Area, and Dr. Reese has more than a dozen patients who come from other states and countries. “Our service sets us apart,” she adds. “The best thing about this practice is the number of patients I have who have been referred by existing patients. It is the best compliment we can get.” Dr. Reese is very in tune with working with patients on an individual level. “We all have different preferences for volume and sound,” says Dr. Reese. “Taking the time to get to know my

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

patients allows me to understand an individual’s preferences and make the necessary adjustments to their hearing aid for the best possible sound result.” That personal service includes taking the time to explain to a patient all they wish to know about their hearing and the available hearing solutions out there. “Many people aren’t familiar with hearing devices, the features, and the range of costs for them. I’ll take as much time as they need to help them understand everything they need to know to get them on the road to hearing better.” Dr. Reese says that many patients who were frustrated with devices they got from big box stores or franchises really appreciate the difference in service they get at JC Audiology. “We only sell one consumer product: Hearing aids. Our focus is on which device fits your lifestyle the best.” Because hearing aids can be complicated electronic, computerized devices with multiple features and price points, Dr. Reese advises all those trying to educate themselves on the

devices to ask for a no-charge, noobligation consultation. “I do these several times a week, and it really helps someone who isn’t familiar with hearing aids to get a basic understanding of everything hearing aids entail.” Larger companies, she said, spend a lot of money on full page advertisements that focuses on cost. “I focus on the patient and can often provide them with a better bargain than they can get anywhere else.” Dr. Reese also stresses, “And with the best service anywhere.” Technology in hearing aids has changed over the years, and Dr. Reese stays on top of the latest developments through continuing education and ongoing manufacturers’ training. Hearing aids now can function with multiple devices to help a hearingimpaired person with a busy lifestyle. They can interact with phones, TV streamers, hearing loops and other technologies to bring sound directly into an aid in the ear. This state-of-the-art technology can be demonstrated at JC Audiology.

JC Audiology is located at 1541 Dale Mabry Hwy., Suite 201, in the North Fork Professional Center in Lutz (across from Walmart).
