From The Co-Publisher Matt Selby

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

We Want to Publish You! As you know, our publication’s primary focus is to cover all the great things that Tampa Bay has to offer. We especially love to inform our community all about the fantastic local businesses in or around our area and help promote a “Shop Local First” mentality. No matter where I am, I constantly search for locally owned and run restaurants, coffee shops and retail stores. In my experience, the customer service is always of higher quality, the ingredients are fresher and I generally feel better about spending my money in the local economy, since I am supporting my neighbors and the families I interact with on daily basis. I know I am not the only one who thinks way. In fact, many people across Tampa are all about

Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles

the shop local movement. Another large source of content you’ll find inside our magazine’s pages includes local events and charities. This is our home, this is where we grew up, this is where we decided to raise our kids. We know the best way to make an impact in Tampa Bay is to support the local organizations that make a difference every day. That is why it is so important to us to show our support for all things local to our beautiful city. With that being said, we would absolutely love to publish articles written by our readers! We live in such a wonderful area, where there are hundreds of things happening every month and we would love to publish everything our

community has to offer! So if you want to see your events, family, friends or community organizations in the pages of our Westchase area edition send over your article with photos if they apply! We will gladly publish your story with your full name and send you extra copies to show friends and family outside our zones. We also will send you the links to your article on our website so you can share it with everyone on Facebook and by E-mail. We can’t wait to hear from you! Put on Your Walking Shoes: Hiking Spree 2017 By Marcy Sanford This past November Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation kicked off Hiking Spree 2017, a new program to encourage residents to get out and take a hike in one of the beautiful parks we are blessed with in the area. “The program has been a huge success,” said Parks and Recreation Senior Event Coordinator Dana McDonald. “This is the first time we’ve done something like this in Hillsborough County and we’ve had a lot of great response from the community. Hiking Spree was suggested to us by an employee who used to live in Ohio where they had a similar program. We are really excited about the program as a way to get people outside exploring.” Hillsborough County has more than 100 recreational parks and hundreds of miles of hiking trails. Hiking Spree 2017 celebrates those trails. Through March 31, people who register with the program and hike any 8 of 19 designated trails will receive a medallion to put on their hiking stick or an Access Hiker patch. New Tampa resident Claire Brantley earned her medallion in December and gained a new found love for hiking. “In July I had some bad health test results and I needed to lose weight. I had been successful with the Weight Watchers program in the past but have never combined exercise with the program because I’ve never enjoyed exercise. I am klutzy, have never found sport I enjoyed playing, and would rather be reading than working out.” Claire lost 30 pounds but knew that without exercise, the pounds would come

back. Fortunately a friend took her on a hike and she enjoyed it. “I had fun and when I got home I googled hiking in Hillsborough and found the information about Hiking Spree.” The week between

Christmas and New Year’s Eve Claire and two of her friends did at least one, sometimes two, hikes from the Hiking Spree list and earned their medallions. You can find a list of all the hikes

and information to help you find the right trail for your skill level on the Hiking Spree website. They are rated for difficulty from all-purpose to primitive and easy to strenuous. “The hikes on our list are just a sam-

ple of the trails we have in Hillsborough County,” said Dana. “We tried to pick ones from different sides of the County and these were specifically chosen because they are great hiking trails.” Some of the trails close to Lutz, Odessa, and Land ‘O Lakes include Lutz Lake Fern Trailhead, Lake Rogers, Violet Cury, and Cypress Creek. Claire highly recommends Violet Cury, “it is really lovely and beautiful,” as well as Lake Rogers, which she says, is, “very unspoiled.” However her favorite has been Mor-

ris Bridge, “the Bald Cypress Trail is on the other side of Morris Bridge Road. The hike is beautiful, exquisite. You hike a mile into the woods and come to a gazebo overlooking the Hillsborough River. I have lived here for 18 years and never knew it existed and now it is my favorite place to go hike.” There are plenty of hiking selections throughout Hillsborough County and those looking for a day adventure may want to explore other areas of the County like the Golden Aster Scrub Preserve in Gibsonton

which is home to endangered plants and birds like the Florida golden aster and the Florida scrub jay. Dana says that more than 800 people have signed up with the program since it started and that the County will definitely do it again. “We’ve had about 250 people join us for guided hikes. In February we did a moonlight hike at Blackwater Creek. Lots of people did not realize these parks were there in their backyards. Next time we will highlight different parks and trails.” Many County parks, like Lettuce

Lake Park, hold program every weekend throughout the year with experts who can tell participants about the animals or plants they’ll encounter in the park or along the trails. It’s not too late to earn your Hiking Spree medallion. For more information about Hiking Spree and to register, visit Hillsborough County’s website at www.hillsboroughcounty.org. Maybe, like Claire – “It’s the first exercise in my life that I’ve really enjoyed.” – you’ll find a new hobby you love.

“Massage” Continued from page 1 massage industry since 2001. Serving the Tampa Bay area, Barkdoll Massage Therapy is completely different in that it takes all of the stress out of your massage experience by bringing it straight to you. No traffic, no stress, just pure relaxation where you feel the most comfortable! Originally from a small town in central Pennsylvania, Karla moved to Baltimore where she trained at the Baltimore School of Massage. Licensed in Maryland, DC, Virginia and Florida, she is a member of the American Massage Therapy Association, and is Nationally Board Certified. Karla’s massages can be done anywhere – at home, poolside, or at the office. Most of her clients choose the room in their house that offers the least distractions, and there she creates a wonderful environment for massage. She also takes the time to really speak to her clients before their massage to learn more about them and any

physical discomfort or problems they have, so that she can create a therapeutic massage that will be most beneficial to each individual. Lindsey from New Port Richey says, “If you are looking for the best massage, then look no further than Karla, she is a rare find. Once you have a massage from Karla, you will look no further, that I will guarantee!” Massage Services that Improve Your Life “Your Health is your Wealth” is the philosophy at Barkdoll Massage Therapy, and that is why Karla takes the time to really find out what kind of massage you prefer, whether it’s a Swedish massage or a deep tissue treatment for chronic pain, Karla’s massage will make a difference in your life. Karla offers a wide range of affordable massage therapy styles and packages. If you are looking for a traditional massage, Swedish massage treatments are designed to improve circulation, reduce stress and to relieve muscle tension. Hot stone massages also are popular. Warm stone therapy,

which is the art of using heated stones in combination with a Swedish massage, is a great method of massage used to dissolve muscle tension and induce deep relaxation. Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic treatment designed to ease the pain and discomfort associated with chronic pain. Karla says, “During deep tissue massages I use trigger points to specifically find the places where the work needs to be done.” Deep tissue massages can help people who live with painful conditions live a fuller life. Another style of massage that Karla offers is sports massage and injury rehabilitation. This style of massage combines the benefits and style of a deep tissue massage with stretching, which can improve the range of motion in joints. Whether you are healing after a car accident or are suffering from chronic pain associated with a medical condition, this kind of massage can be extremely beneficial. One of Karla’s clients from Trinity said, “I have had the pleasure of having Karla as a massage therapist for the past six years and it has always been an enriching and healing experience. She

is knowledgeable, professional and a kindhearted person and I have no hesitation in recommending her service. She has hands of gold!” Prenatal massages are a fantastic way to pamper the mom-to-be while easing some of the side effects of pregnancy. Specially designed massage table pillows create a comfortable position just for a woman during this time, so that pregnant moms can safely enjoy their massage. Aromatherapy is proven to aid in relaxation, and Barkdoll Massage Therapy offers a variety of essential oils and scents that can be used in collaboration with any other style of massage. Most often used with a Swedish massage, aromatherapy oils are applied by Karla during your massage to enhance the massage experience. One local couple wrote, “We all have very busy schedules and it saves us time and stress to have Karla come right to our home. My husband has chronic pain and her weekly massages help him tremendously. Whether you just want a great stress reliever or you have a medical condition I would

My Massage with Karla Scheduling my massage turned out to be a breeze because Barkdoll Massage Therapy is one of the only places that offers evening massage appointments. It was all very easy for me since I wasn’t going to have to worry about driving anywhere or a babysitter for the kids! I simply picked out a quiet room in the house, sent the kids outside to play with my hubby, and got ready to enjoy my massage. Karla, a true professional, arrives right on time bringing everything

she needs with her. She takes the time to ask about any injuries you may have suffered in the past, and current complaints that she needs to be aware of. Karla and I decided that a combination Swedish and deep tissue massage would be most beneficial for me. Karla put on what I like to call “massage music,” and spoke to me about what she was going to do before she began. To my surprise, I was even more relaxed because I was at home. I enjoyed the entire hour instead of wondering how many minutes had passed, or wondering about the kids. I felt safe, pampered and well cared for. After my massage, I felt like a softened stick of butter, and I was able to just put on my slippers instead of my shoes! Massage can make one feel more

centered, and can even change one’s outlook. Following my massage with Karla, I felt great for days and my entire family could see what a difference it made for me both physically and emotionally. The best thing about Barkdoll Massage Therapy is how affordable it is, making it possible to benefit from theapeutic massage on a regular basis. Barkdoll Massage Therapy is an entirely mobile massage therapy business that comes to you. Karla Barkdoll (License # MA47546) is available 7 days a week, from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. To schedule an appointment or to request more information about massage packages, corporate events or gift certificates, call (727) 372- 6389 or email Karla Barkdoll at barkdollmassagetherapy@yahoo.com

“Cleaning” Continued from page 1 things about Donna and her company. She is completely dedicated to making sure her clients’ needs are met and as her company has grown, Donna has put key people in place to make sure that every detail is attended to. Her right hand, Office Manager Maria Santilli, was “sent by God” according to Donna. Maria truly appreciates Donna as well, and considers her a mentor. Donna brought on Assistant Office Manager Jerry Brennan and says, “She fits right in with us!” And Steve Insolia, who is in charge of quality control, she says, “He has been a great asset to the company!” As her business continues to grow, she is able to support even more families through year-round, reliable employment, while meeting the needs of a still growing customer base. She says, “It is a great feeling to know that I provide a full time, secure job for 30 people.” Attentive to the details of her company, Donna gives kudos to other likeminded business owners. “We live in a country with a lot of small

businesses and I salute all the other small businesses that are doing things the right way: Protecting themselves, their employees, and their customers by having the proper insurance.” Donna’s hard work has translated into a growing business that now employs nearly 30 people and has a fleet of cars to better service the clients of Donna’s Cleaning Angels. The company is licensed and insured, the employees screened and trained, and Donna’s Cleaning Angels’ teams are held accountable for the job they provide, because the office is in communication with the homeowners and business owners they service, making sure that every cleaning provided is beyond satisfactory.

Professionalism, Start to Finish From the first moment that new customers talk on the phone to Maria, they realize this is a professional company. Knowledgeable and personable, Maria is ready to answer any questions about Donna’s Cleaning Angels, including availability and the complete list of services the company provides, which are extensive and basically cover any type of cleaning

need you have, from weekly cleaning to upholstery and rug cleaning, and much more. Maria is at Donna’s Cleaning Angels’ office every weekday morning before the sun is up, making certain that the Cleaning Angels have everything they need to provide an excellent cleaning to every customer, every time. The teams are in uniforms with the Donna’s Cleaning Angels logo and wearing close-toed, non-slip shoes, which Donna says is a requirement to meet OSHA standards of safety and one that not all cleaning companies adhere to. Donna’s Cleaning Angels are provided with a large canvas kit containing the high quality cleaning products for every job. What’s more, every employee that Donna hires is background checked, drug free and covered by workman’s compensation. This is part of the reason why Donna’s Cleaning Angels is the first choice of so many people in our area. Every tool and cleaning product – from the professional grade vacuums to the lint-free cleaning rags) – are carefully chosen by Donna, who has provided only the best to her clients and her

employees since she first started her business nearly 26 years ago. A businesswoman from a long line of hardworking entrepreneurs, Donna is very proud of her work ethic, which she credits to the way she was raised. Dedication, hard work, and accountability are second nature to Donna. She grew up in Gorham, New Hampshire, and shares, “I am extremely proud and emotional that this year is the 70th Anniversary of my family’s restaurant in Gorham.” True to her family’s hardworking legacy, Donna is steadfast in her dedication to her business, her employees, and her clients. “I can’t believe nearly 26 years have gone by,” says Donna. “This took a lot of dedication…tremendous dedication.” She adds, “I’ve seen a lot of cleaning services come and go, but we are here for the long term. Now we are bigger and better than ever and are the number one cleaning service in Tampa Bay. I am so excited I still have a lot of the same customers for over 20 years!” Maria says, “Customers love how much time Donna takes to meet, greet and explain everything we have to offer them in person. We are branching out more into commercial cleaning. Such

your cleaning service, which is why we take so many steps to protect you and make you feel at ease with our service. My customers don’t have to worry because I’ve done the homework and I carry the liability.” Donna values the relationships with her employees, adding, “I really appreciate my hardworking girls. They take care of our customers with much pride. Our customers love our back-tobasics, old-fashioned cleaning techniques, which often remind them of how their grandmothers used to clean.” The teams are trained to clean Donna’s way – the right way! “Some employees have come here that previously worked for other cleaning services, and they are amazed at our training procedures, stating that their

previous employers made them watch a video and then sent them off the very next day to clean, unsupervised. Our Angels have on-the-job training for over a month, with a field manager, before they are considered a ‘true cleaning angel.’ It takes time and effort to make sure an employee is 100 percent up to our cleaning standards. Detailed cleaning is what we are known for. Not just a run-through, wipe-down.” To ensure that every client is happy after each cleaning, Donna offers comment cards, regularly checks in with her clients, and has regular meetings with her staff. The Donna’s Cleaning Angels’ logo-wrapped cars and trucks can often be seen around the neighborhoods of West Pasco, Eastern Hillsborough and

North Pinellas Counties, and this hasn’t missed the notice of two of the most important people in Donna’s life. “I’ve been told by family and friends that I don’t give myself enough credit,” shares Donna. “A few weeks ago when my young grandsons came to visit, one said, ‘Grammy you are famous! We see your cars and advertisements all over the place!’ At that moment, I realized how fortunate I am. I told them it takes hard work, determination and strength! I am not a franchise, nor did I have the backing of another company; I did this on my own. It makes me happy to know that this is a legacy that I can now leave my grandchildren.” Donna adds, “At the end of the day I thank God for my blessings – the great people who work for me, a great business, my health, my home, my loved ones and my family. God bless you all and God bless America.” Schedule a free consultation with Donna’s Cleaning Angels at 727-942-8289, and be sure to ask about the Refer-A-Friend program that can earn you a free cleaning.
