Church, 2801 East Lake Road in Palm Harbor. The purpose of the meeting is to inform the residents how to get along with the native wildlife in the area, namely the deer. There is a group of residents that believe the deer are over-populated because they are eating the plants and shrubs around their homes. They would like to see archery hunting of the deer allowed in the East Lake/Brooker Creek area to stop this problem. There is also another group of residents that believe archery hunting would be very dangerous as children and adults walk and play in the woods of East Lake and Brooker Creek. Several speakers at this meeting will tell the residents things that they can do to discourage the deer from eating their landscape. A representative from the Fish and Wildlife Dept. will also be speaking and will have the facts on the deer population in this area. Residents, both for and against archery hunting of the deer in the East Lake Area will be allowed to speak. If you would like to find out that's happening with the wildlife in the area, please plan on attending this meeting. For Ques-

The Cat Hospital at Palm Harbor & Cat Nap Inn By Kim Thomas “Cats are not small dogs!” So said the poet T.S. Eliot and so say Robert A. Marrazzo, D.V.M. and the staff of The Cat Hospital at Palm Harbor. Since 1996, he and his welltrained staff of cat lovers have expertly cared for thousands of cats and their people from throughout the Tampa Bay Area. “Cat owners might be surprised to learn that many veterinarians don’t know a lot about cats,” said Dr. Marrazzo. “Most of what we are taught in veterinary school relates to dogs, as is the continuing education we take after we graduate.” The typical small animal hospital is not even half and half dogs and cats. Many veterinarians see 75% or more dog patients, with the remainder being cats and other species. From the moment you enter The Cat Hospital, you’ll realize that such is not the case here. This place is different - it is not your typical animal hospital. Cats rule within these four walls, and the attention shown to making the veterinary visit for a cat and their person a less stressful experience is everywhere you turn. Sorry, no loud barking dogs here, nor any hint of the odor typically encountered in animal hospitals. Feline artwork including oils, pastels and photographs capturing feline beauty, magic, and whimsy adorn the walls, and soothing music plays in the exam rooms, the boarding area, and the hospital ward. More importantly, the veterinarians and the staff here have committed their professional lives to cats, and learning everything they can about cats, their medicine, surgery, and the best way to handle them. They are devoted to treating cats like the unique animals they are, and not as if they were small dogs. This is a place where sick cats can go, and be treated like cats - and get better!

14

Why a Cat-Only Hospital? Dr. Marrazzo founded The Cat Hospital at Palm Harbor for a few important reasons: The first was out of pure selfishness - he LOVES cats, and everything about them! His second reason was to provide an atmosphere where cats and their owners could come, and not experience the additional stresses found in other veterinary offices. “Cats lounge around 364 days a year plucking hairs in the quiet of their home,” said Dr. Marrazzo, “then one day a year, we pluck them up, stuff them in a cat carrier, place them in a jostling loud car, and then set them down on the floor of a crowded waiting room, where dogs are barking loudly, and sticking their nose in the front door of their carrier. Can you imagine how stressful that experience is?” Lastly, treating cats only allows the doctors and staff to dedicate their focus toward learning everything there is to know about your cat. They possess a strong commitment to continuing education for veterinarians and the entire staff, so that they all stay up on the latest advances related to cats. Cats Are Over-Vaccinated and Often Treated Like Small Dogs The Cat Hospital provides everything a cat and their person might need, from kitten-hood, through their adult and golden years, then on to endof-life care. Dr. Marrazzo says, “We believe that the most important role we can provide is to be good listeners and counselors. Veterinary medicine is a threesome involving the patient, client, and doctor. It is only after closely examining your little rascal, and considering what you’ve told us that we come up with treatment plans that are best for your cat and you.” The veterinari-

ans here are often pleased, yet disappointed, at how many times their clients tell them, “Wow, I wish my old veterinarian had been as thorough as you.” The doctors at The Cat Hospital are big believers in the ‘Above all else, do no harm’ philosophy of medicine, also ‘If they don’t need it, why give it?’ Since 1999, the Cat Hospital has adhered to the American Association of Feline Practitioners’ recommendations that showed that cats were being overvaccinated. “Unfortunately, to this day, many veterinarians treat the annual visit as an opportunity to turn your cat into a pin-cushion, and give them vaccines they don’t need,” said Dr. Marrazzo. He added, “Coupons in fliers boasting of ‘cat vaccination packages’ are simply a disservice to you and your cat, because the majority of cats do NOT need all of these vaccinations. They need a thorough examination by someone who is knowledgeable, who listens and who pays attention to your concerns.” At The Cat Hospital at Palm Harbor, your cat will be treated as an individual and his or her unique needs will be addressed only after speaking with you, and examining your cat. Sorry, no vaccine packages here. The Cat Doctors – A Passion for Cats Dr. Marrazzo is a cat person, and truly loves cats. It takes one to know one and when he said, “Cats are the most unique creatures I’ve ever met; they have what I call cat powers” – I knew I’d met a kindred spirit in that I knew just what he meant. His passion for cats runs through everything he does. Dr. Marrazzo continued, “Cats are intuitive and have very strong powers of observation. If more people would open their hearts to share their lives with a cat, they’d be surprised at the positive energy that a cat can bring

into their life.” Dr. Marrazzo graduated from Cornell University, then attended the University Of Florida College Of Veterinary Medicine, where he received his degree as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1988, being awarded the Phi Theta Kappa Award for academic excellence in veterinary medicine and surgery. After graduation, Dr. Marrazzo actively sought out positions that allowed him to learn from leaders in the field of veterinary medicine, including practicing in internal medicine, and neurology / neurosurgery practices. He has an extensive background in emergency medicine and surgery, and critical care, and also did relief work and has practice in over 30 different veterinary hospitals in both New York and Florida. That experience allowed him to see veterinary medicine practiced at it’s very finest, and at its very worst. Not only is he a healer, but Dr. Marrazzo is an Adjunct Professor of Veterinary Medical Technology at St. Petersburg College where he enjoys sharing his knowledge with groups of students. According to him, it is like teaching in an examination room to his clients, but on an even larger scale. Dr. Marrazzo is proud of his long

The staff at The Cat Hospital at Palm Harbor: (L-R) Randi, Melissa, Bree, Dr. Marrazzo & Ernie the cat, Erika, Cindy, Chris & Oscar the cat affiliation with the American Association of Feline Practitioners, which is an organization dedicated to improving knowledge about cats, and providing guidelines for veterinarians about proper cat care. He was recently honored by being appointed to the Executive Board of that international organization. Excited to practice alongside Dr. Marrazzo, Angela M. Avok, DVM, MBA, MSM, joined the team at The Cat Hospital in 2011. She has MBA and Master of Science in Management degrees from University of Central Florida, and was already very successful in business when she decided something was missing and went back to school to pursue a new career as a veterinarian. Leaving that part of her life behind, she went back to veterinary school, receiving her veterinary degree from the University Of Florida in 2010, along the way receiving the numerous feline awards and accolades. “I knew I wanted to work with cats so I started taking extra shifts and rotations so I could learn everything possible from feline-related cases,” says Dr. Avok. “That is also why I wanted to practice here with Dr. Marrazzo. I moved to this area specifically to work beside him, and share his knowledge about veterinary medicine specific to cats.” Dr. Avok was recently named by

the AVMA and AAFP as an emerging leader in the field of veterinary medicine. She enjoys all aspects of feline medicine and surgery, and has a great fondness for geriatric kitties. The Cat Friendly Staff Nursing care staff are a very important part of your cats care, just as a well-trained nursing staff is in a human hospital. The Cat Hospital is very proud to have three Certified Veterinary technicians on its staff, where most animal hospital have none. These licensed veterinary care givers are the animal equivalent of Registered Nurses for humans. These well-trained experts in cat care do your cat’s dental cleaning, monitor their anesthesia along with the doctors, administer treatments, do laboratory tests, and provide hospital nursing care for patients. The hospital and staff have been certified as a Cat Friendly Practice Gold Award Designee by the A.A.F.P. which means that they are sensitive to the unique needs of cats in hospital design, but more importantly in the handling of feline patients, and can expertly deal with frightened cats. Purrfect for Cats & Their People! Cats love this place and so do their owners! During my visit to The Cat Hospital, I overheard a client, Bill

Williamson, praising the staff. He mentioned how the certified technicians there do such an excellent job! “I’ve been to a lot of other places where they didn’t do a good job with my cat, but they are great here. This place is very good, or I wouldn’t bring my cat here.” Rebecca and her mother Marty were in with her four cats. “Dr. Marrazzo has saved my cats’ lives,” shared Rebecca. It took her 30 days to catch a stray one kitten, Snowshoe, who had a badly malformed leg turned backwards on itself at the ankle. Other vets told Rebecca that the leg needed to be amputated. “Dr. Marrazzo came up with a plan to try to save Snowshoe’s leg based on his own experience with a shoulder injury. He bent her leg back to a more normal position over time under anesthesia, and then created hand-made splints. She now uses that leg as if nothing had happened to it.” Another of Rebecca’s cats, Sweet Paws, was in terrible shape when she caught him, having many broken teeth and a ruptured eardrum due to traumatic injury to his face. After treatment and finally free of pain, Sweet Paws is a different cat. Rebecca said, “Now he’s my couch potato buddy. And the great thing is, Dr. Marrazzo didn’t think of him as a feral cat.” The Hospital – One of Four FelineOnly AAHA Hospitals in Florida Attention to cat-considered detail abounds here. Unlike a practice that sees cats and dogs, there are none of the smells or sounds that will startle or upset a cat. In fact, it smells really good in there. The entire hospital is well ventilated, flooded with natural light, and is kept spotlessly clean. This place is all about cats! This facility is truly state-of-theart, and is one of the best equipped facilities in the area. It is one of only four feline-only American Animal Hospital Association hospitals in the state of Florida, meaning that the hospital is

held to very high standards of care, and for the equipment it contains. The lobby and exam rooms all have natural lighting to put cats and humans at ease, and feel welcome. The hospital has two human pediatric incubators for sick cats, two human patient warmers where most animal hospitals have neither of these. There is a dental surgery suite, a digital x-ray room, and a surgical suite. State-of-the art monitoring equipment is the norm here as well. Every cat who has a dental cleaning has digital x-rays taken of their teeth. Dr. Avok said, “Most cats dental problems are below the gum-line. So if your veterinarian is not taking x-rays before a dental cleaning, they are doing you and your cat a disservice.” An in-house lab and pharmacy eliminates the wait for lab work results and medication. And, speaking of the pharmacy, did you know that some of the same medicine that works for humans and dogs would kill a cat? The team members at The Cat Hospital are full of good-to-know information for cat owners. The Cat Nap Inn also goes out its way to offer cats a home-away-fromhome environment for leaving your cat when you go out of town. There is a view of the outside through windows in the multi-storied cat condominiums, which are designed to be spacious with multiple levels to satisfy a cat’s curiosity and desire to be up high. If you adore your cat, like I do, you would do well to bring him or her to The Cat Hospital at Palm Harbor where your cat is not treated like a small dog – they speak meow there. The Cat Hospital at Palm Harbor and The Cat Nap Inn are located at 2501 Alternate 19 North in Palm Harbor. Visit WeSpeakMeow.com for additional information about the doctors and staff, plus a virtual hospital tour, or call 727-785-2287. The hospital encourages visitors at any time for a tour of its facility.

“We Make You Sparkle!” By Lenay Ruhl Nikki’s Glitz & Glam Boutique brings designer fashions from all over

the world to the Tampa Bay area, offering clothing for every occasion. The store is currently speckled with bright colored tops, dresses, jewelry and

boots, offering customers an array of beautiful spring fashions. Conveniently located at 34246 US 19 N in Palm Harbor, Nikki’s Glitz & Glam Boutique aims to have unique, one-of-a-kind outfits, carrying designer names such as Jovani, Tony Bowls, Mac Duggal, Sherri Hill, Sue Wong, Cameron Blake, Mon Cheri-Montage and Ivonne D. As one of the top ten prom stores in the United States, Nikki’s Glitz & Glam is a full service boutique offering trendy, casual clothes along with formal attire and a full-service tuxedo rental business.

They carry 15 of the top formalwear designer labels, handpicking gowns and dresses at apparel shows throughout the year. Nikki’s receives new clothes every day so shoppers can always expect to find new surprises at every visit. Not just a prom store, Nikki’s Glitz & Glam Boutique welcomes customers of all ages, shapes and sizes; from junior size girls to full figured women and those in-between. The boutique section carries sizes XS-XL, and the formal section offers sizes 0-24W. Nikki’s accommodates special orders along with being able to provide alterations, and recently started its own customized tuxedo rental through Jim’s Formal Wear. Jim’s is the largest tuxedo wholesaler in the United States. Although they do not carry wedding dresses, they do have attire for mother of the bride and groom, cocktail party dresses,

prom and homecoming gowns, and wedding guests’ garments. “We’re more competitive because we’re a family owned business,” said Toni Positano, compared to stores at the mall offering classy and formal wear. Toni and her team, including her son Nicholas Positano, strive to find customers the perfect outfit that is flattering to their body type and in style.

They go as far as the fitting room and beyond to help the girls find the perfect fit and flattering design. Nikki’s Glitz & Glam strongly discourages online ordering, because things are not cheaper online and to find the perfect dress for your body, you need to try several styles. Along with the personal attention customers receive at Nikki’s Glitz & Glam Boutique, the store also offers layaway, special ordering, and alterations. “We make you feel special,” said Toni. Shopping for a special occasion dress can be very stressful. Everyone wants to look their absolute best at events and it is so important to step out feeling confident and fabulous, but it can be frustrating when you have been to every store at the mall with no success. “Girls come in crying, and when they leave they are all smiles,” said Nick. Every customer is greeted and catered to at Nikki’s Glitz & Glam. Positano and her staff build rapport with their customers. “We know our regulars by their names,” Linda Gargano, a store employee, chimed in. Toni referred to Gargano as her right

hand girl who provides unmatched customer service. A Glitzy Family Legacy Nicholas Positano was the inspiration for the name of the boutique. Working there full-time (while attending college), he now heads the newly added tuxedo rentals. As a kid, he grew up in his mom’s stores, first at her consignment shop that Toni owned and operated for 17 years, before opening Nikki’s Glitz & Glam Boutique. Nicholas has been working alongside his mom since he was nine years old and has gained knowledge of fashion. Currently pursuing a degree in business, he hopes to take over for his mom some day. “Now me and my mom are like business partners,” said Nicholas. “I know everything about the business.” Positano is very proud of her son. “He’s very business minded,” she said, praising Nicholas’ ability to merchandise and coordinate colors, skills that help her immensely as they travel together to apparel shows. Together, Toni and Nicholas travel to apparel shows all over the country, from Atlanta to Vegas and even locally in West Palm and Miami. Nicholas described the markets as consisting of big show rooms with hundreds of different brands. The market is designed to show viewers new styles. They attend fashion shows, runway shows, and many meetings looking for and to understand the hot trends to keep Nikki’s Glitz & Glam current. “I try to find unique, quality items at an affordable price,” said Toni, about the markets. They also have the opportunity to get input from the designers themselves and discover what is in style around the world. As they select their stock orders, Toni and Nicholas are continually envisioning outfits. They are selecting dresses, tops, designer jeans and jewelry that could collectively be worn together.

Toni Positano gained a lot of her experience from running her own consignment shop. It was while working there that she realized she wanted to be able to keep up with the trends, so she started saving her money. “I wanted to be able to handpick my merchandise,” she said. “It was my dream but I couldn’t afford it back then, so with lots of hard work and dedication…” her voice trailed off as she proudly looked around the store. Nicholas chimed in, talking about the importance of their customers’ support to the business over the last year. “We have so many customers who leave here with good impressions,” said Nicholas. “The nicest part of our business is when you get to help people and see them happy when they leave.” They talk about how girls come in completely stressed out about finding the perfect dress, and how hard they work to make sure they help these girls in distress “say yes to the dress!” Positano reflected about watching the Academy Awards, the elegant women sparkling on stage. Her passion for fashion inspired her to help local girls achieve their goals without breaking the bank. “A lot of people have small budgets, and we can make you sparkle on a small budget,” said Toni. Nikki’s Glitz & Glam periodically hosts fundraisers and fashion shows, and currently has tickets for sale for the upcoming event on April 14; Nikki’s is partnering with the Florida HospitalNorth Pinellas to host “Remember When” which will feature a fashion show, a luncheon and a dance. Nikki’s Glitz & Glam Boutique is located at 34246 US Hwy 19 N in Palm Harbor. Hours: 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. on Mon, Tues, Wed; from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Thurs. & Fri.; and Sat. from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.; closed on Sun. Les Grandes Dames Brings Women's Tennis to a Whole New Level By Diane Galemmo East Lake Woodlands Country Club in Oldsmar hosted this season’s Les Grandes Dames Spring Cup tennis tournament on March 7-9. The weather was beautiful and the tennis was spectacular. "This is East Lake's fourth year hosting the event," says tennis director Jake Bryan. "It is a national event and we're extremely pleased that we were selected to have it here." Les Grandes Dames was created in 1978 by national and international tennis champions, (the late) Nancy Reed and Mary Ann Plante, both from Winter Park, FL. It is essentially a senior women's professional tour whose players are among the best senior women tennis players in the country. It is also open to retired tennis pros. Some of the pros who participated in the past are: Billie Jean King, Wendy Overton and Nancy Richey. A strong field of competitors in their 50s, 60s, and 70s traveled from IL, VA PA, TX, NJ, NY and MA. to participate. And, of course, many came from Florida. Players have to be

24

U.S.T.A. (United States Tennis Association) members in order to compete. The winners and finalists receive prize money (depending on the number of players in the draw), flowers, and a pair of new high-tech socks. The entry fee for the tournament was $65 for singles and $50 for doubles. Among the players was our own hometown champion Ria Graham, 75, of New Port Richey, who played and won with her partner Judith Siracusa in the 70s doubles. She is ranked 5th in the nation in singles, and 10th nationally in doubles. In Florida she is ranked #1 in singles and #2 in doubles. (All rankings are 2012 results). Graham, who did not get serious about tennis until she was in her 40s, hails from the Netherlands and plays out of Innisbrook in Palm Harbor. She has often won the Innisbrook year-end club championships both in singles and doubles. Graham won tennis' International World Cup with her super-senior team U.S.A. in Antalya, Turkey in 2010. In doing so, the U.S.A. beat out Ireland, Switzerland, Australia and Germany at love! An impressive victory. Other hometown champs, both of

whom are tennis pros at East Lake Woodlands Country Club Tennis Center, are Karen Olson (ranked 21 nationally in singles, 2012 results), from Oldsmar, and Lori Burdell, from Dunedin who played in the 50s division. Olson slipped in just in time, as she just recently turned 50. Olson was a semi-finalist in singles, losing to Susan Boyer, the eventual winner of the tournament. Olson says, "I actually

Match sponsors were Bayshore Solutions and Green Market Cafe in Oldsmar. On Mar. 7, a complimentary player's dinner party was held at the clubhouse for all players, and match sponsor Green Market Cafe provided lunch for the 3rd consecutive year. Tournament Director Jake Bryan headed the tennis committee. Karen Olson was the Tournament Chairperson. Co-chairs Maureen Hourigan and Judy Foster, along with 16 others who served on the committee, assisted Olson. Karen Olson says, "Every year we have a wonderful group of ladies to help out with donations, hospitality, housing and publicity to make this event fun for everyone. 'Thank you.' And a very special 'thank you' goes out to Maureen Hourigan for all of her dedication and hard work for this tour-

The NTRP (National Tennis Rating Program) is the most accurate rating system available and was developed by the U.S.T.A in 1979. Player levels are based on a scale from 1.0 to 7.0, with 1.0 being someone who is just starting to play tennis and 7.0 being a world-class professional who makes his/her living from tournament prize money. Most of the players in Les Grandes Dames were in the 5.0 category. According to the NTRP rating system, a 5.0 player possesses all the shots, has good shot anticipation and frequently has an outstanding shot and exceptional consistency. Here are the final results: Women's 50 singles, (2) Susan Boyer defeated (1) Kathy Vick; Women's 50 doubles, (2) Boyer/Thomson defeated (1) Vick/Warden; Women's 60 singles, (1) Kerry Young defeated (2) Susan Bramlette; Women's 60 doubles, Smith/Young defeated (1) Bramlette/Cooper; Women's 70 doubles, Graham/Siracusa defeated Borcherding/Dimond.

Arts, loves her job and takes pride in teaching her students to focus on the expression and artistry of dance while having fun along the way. Regina is a New Port Richey native and has possessed a passion for the art of dance throughout her life. She opened The Academy of Dance Arts in March of 2009 after graduating from the University of Tampa, where she earned her Bachelor's Degree with a major in Psychology and a minor in Dance Education. The Academy of Dance Arts is composed of two spacious studios that allow plenty of room for freestyle movement and a number of diverse classes. Mirrors line the walls in order to allow students to perfect their form as they work on mastering the art of dance across the hard wood floors. Regina says, "We focus on molding a well-rounded dancer so that the student is prepared to move forward and grow in the art of dance." Classes are offered afternoons and evenings, Monday through Friday, and Saturday mornings and afternoons. Regina and her staff offer several different types of classes for various ages at her studio including ballet, modern dance, jazz, tap, hip hop, acrobatics

and Hawaiian/Tahitian dance; all of which are one hour in duration. Offering a variety of different dance forms allows students to find their own style and they learn to combine different dance style into a medley of their own unique flair. Regina teaches the tap, ballet, modern and jazz classes. Instructor Pomaika'i Nash teaches Hawaiian dance class, and instructor Nicole Brown teaches the hip hop classes. Also, there is a class available for children ages three and four called Creative Movement, which is a 45minute class that offers a fun way to introduce students (and parents) to dance. The movements and activities introduce the beginning fundamentals of ballet, jazz and tumbling. The students also play games that enhance cognitive and social development, as well as teaching classroom etiquette.

Adults looking to learn a new technique or continue their dance education will enjoy Zumba, Jazz or one of the other classes offered for adults. Regina believes that there is always time to learn and experience new dance styles, no matter age, background or ability.

Registration for Summer Dance Camp & Competitive Dance Teams Academy of Dance Arts is holding a Summer Dance Camp that will keep your kids busy and having fun while school is out. The kids will be learning new dance moves, enjoying arts and crafts, and will even get a pool party at the end of the week at Regina's house! The first camp will be held July 8–1¬2 for kids ages 5-10 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dance Camp at Academy of Dance Arts is a great solution for summer boredom and an enjoyable way to get kids out of the

house with an interest that can benefit them a lifetime. All dance styles will be introduced at the camp, which will allow dancers to find a style they love for future pursuance. The second summer camp held is a night master class held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for experienced dancers age 11 and up. This summer camp lasts from July 15–18, with a focus on jazz contemporary and ballet. Students will work on technique, form and strength building. The Academy of Dance Arts began a competition team this year and is in search of dedicated dancers with a drive to compete. “My students are really excited to compete and we are looking forward to building a great team,” says Regina. Academy of Dance Arts will be attending between three and four competitions a year within Central Florida. The Academy of Dance Arts competition team will focus on a blend of dancing. Regina

says, “Kids should be experienced in a variety of different styles to join the team. Dancers have to be very dedicated and motivated to join the competition team. Brad and his team at DVA began brainstorming and realized that beginning a warehouse-like retail store in the area would be beneficial in business and the community, leading to the birth of GOLO Outlet! GOLO works as a buyer in overstock merchandise that you would normally buy at big box stores and then sells items at lower prices. Action Fishing Adventures with Captain Mike Manning Your Tarpon and Snook Specialist! By Katie Thomas There is no other thrill that quite compares to catching a big one! The adrenaline that surges through your body when reeling in a nice sized trophy fish is a complete rush – the best kind of fight you can experience is out on the beautiful Florida waters while sports fishing. Action Fishing Adventures, ran by Captain Mike Manning is your shot to hook a big one and have the time of your life on the glassy, blue-green Florida flats. Captain Mike received his US Coast Guard Captain License in 1994 and has run fishing charters from Homosassa to St. Petersburg and further south to Boca Grande. Captain Mike is a Florida native, born and raised in New Port Richey; he has spent his life fishing the local waters. Mike’s love and passion for fishing led him to evolve into a flats fishing, inshore, backwater, near shore fishing guide. Mike knows the ins and outs of the

west gulf coast waters like the back of his hand and is well respected within the fishing community. Captain Mike’s drive to catch speckled sea trout, kingfish, bull redfish, tarpon and snook is insatiable and has earned him a reputation as one of the finest guides on the Gulf Coast. Capt. Mike runs an impeccably kept 24’ Avenger powered by a stateof-the-art Yamaha 300. His Avenger is specifically designed to get you on the fish from the backwaters to the near shore reefs in the Gulf. “My boat draws just inches of water, yet offers a full transom and adequate freeboard to safely fish in most any condition,” explains Capt. Mike. “A high thrust electric trolling motor is utilized in stalking wary tarpon and a push poll is used to creep up on tailing fish in shallow water.” Rest assured that Captain Mike’s boat is outfitted beyond all Coast Guard Standards and decked out in the best gear/tackle you need; you’ll

Mike knows the sweet spots around our coastline and you won’t be disappointed in the amazing adventure you are going to have during his guided trip. If you have ever had the chance to reel in a tarpon, then you know how addictive this sport truly is. I caught my first tarpon when I was 16, off Egmont Key in St. Petersburg. it in I was exhausted, happy, near tears and full of adrenaline! I can honestly say it was one of the best fishing experiences of my life and watching that big tarpon jump in an awe-inspiring display of acrobatic twists was a beautiful sight that anyone could appreciate. Captain Mike says, “There is nothing like it when a bright silver tarpon weighing anywhere from 100 to 200 pounds clears the water by six feet.” Mike visits Boca Grande during tarpon season every year and hooks the big beauties during competitive tournaments. “After many years of tarpon fishing I decided to keep track of how many tarpon my clients jump during tarpon season from April to July in Boca Grande,” says Capt. Mike. “I thought this would be a great way to show potential clients just how good the tarpon fishing is in Boca. During the 2011 tarpon fishing season my clients jumped a whopping 513 tarpon, with the largest fish over 225 pounds! During the 2012 tarpon fishing season, my clients jumped 409 tarpon. In 2012 there was a small decline in the fishing due to weather conditions, but we still did great. This is why Boca Grande is world famous for

tarpon fishing. There is no place in the world that you go and hook that many tarpon in that short of a time frame!” Fishing a trip with Captain Mike at Action Fishing Adventures is a great way to bond with your family, have a fun trip with friends or show off Florida’s natural beauty to visitors. Mike has been featured on Fox 13’s Good Day Tampa Bay with Russell Rhodes, Left Coast Fishing National Syndicated Fishing Show, and has been featured in St. Petersburg Times outdoor column with Terry Tomin, Outdoor Editor Suncoast Fisherman’s Guide and selected as a guide to write for Capt.’s Corner for St. Petersburg Times sports column. Make Your Summer A Memorable One At YMCA Summer Day Camp Sunshine, blue skies, warmer temperatures and school winding down can only mean one thing – it’s time for summer camp! The YMCA of the Suncoast offers a safe and caring environment where kids and teens have fun, learn new skills, get outdoors, make friends and make memories. “Spending the summer at camp is not only a valuable and safe experience for youth, it’s also important to their personal development,” says G. Scott

Goyer, President and CEO of the YMCA of the Suncoast. “Camp helps youth develop social skills and decision-making skills, and learn from new experiences.” Camping experts at the YMCA say that summer camp can have a meaningful impact on youth in several ways: • Youth experience “unstructured” playtime that they normally don’t have at home or school, thus

learning how to become independent, make smart choices, solve problems and work with others. • The experience of trying and learning new things, including adventurous outdoor activities, gives youth confidence and helps them develop healthy life-long habits. • As fewer youth are spending time outdoors, camp helps them develop an awareness and appreciation for nature. • At camp youth are cared for and given guidance, and feel a part of a community, allowing them to feel comfortable being themselves. • Youth learn from other campers and counselors, and make new friends to share it all with. The YMCA provides exciting and education summer camp options that appeal to both parents and kids. From tennis to golf, art, dance, and basketball, campers have a variety of options throughout the summer. Our most popular, Adventure Camp, allows kids

“Cleaning Angels” Continued from page 1 was under Hospice care. One day, after Donna left a crystal angel for her, the lady told her caretaker that Donna was her cleaning angel, and shortly after passed away. All these years later, Donna is still emotional as she tells the story of how she came to name her business. Donna comes from a hard-working family of entrepreneurs and grew up with a strict work ethic. Being half Italian and half French Canadian, she was raised to be a hard worker, honest and dependable in a small town in the white mountains of New Hampshire called Gorham, where her family has owned an Italian restaurant for over 66 years. Donna explains, “The dedication and success in my cleaning business is due to the closeness of my wonderful family. I am proud and honored to say that I am following in the footsteps of my parents and grandparents. We know how to cook, clean and we give 100 percent to the business.” In addition to her family’s influence, Donna attributes the success of her company to a determined attitude,

The cleaning is top to bottom, complete and comprehensive. Donna realizes that many of her clients are working longer hours than ever. “They simply need help,” states Donna. “Even ten years ago, cleaning services were for the rich. Today, it is a necessity for many families and the cost is budgeted in just like the electric bill and utilities. The last thing my clients want to do on their day off is spend it cleaning their homes; time is precious and they would much rather be spending free time with family and friends.” Whether you are a retiree, busy
