National Multiple Sclerosis Society Presents the MS Walk at Lowry Park Zoo On April 26th at 6:30 pm. Thousands of people will join together to help find a cure for Multiple Sclerosis at the Lowry Park Zoo. “The event draws approximately 1,500-2,000 individuals who participate and walk either the one mile or the two mile course through Lowry Park Zoo,” says Rita Schallenberger, facilitator for the Hillsborough County Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Support Group. “It’s a lot of fun with planned activities for the whole family. Several teams and

individual walkers enjoy an evening at the zoo walking for a very worthwhile cause. The money goes to research seeking a cure for MS as well as programs to educate and assist individuals with this chronic disease.” Location: Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo, 1101 W Sligh Ave., Tampa, FL Site Opens: 5:00 p.m. Opening Ceremony: 6:00 p.m. Route Length: Short Route: 1 mile, Long Route: 2 miles Event Contact Email: flcwalkinfo@nmss.org Event Contact Phone: 407478-8882

Did you know that in the short time such as a week, approximately 200 people will have been diagnosed with MS? MS attacks the central nervous system - that is the brain and the spinal cord; or more simply, the core of all body functions. MS is chronic and is a progressive disease. It is a disease that affects all members in a family because of the spillover effect. There are disease-modifying treatments available, but there is no cure. However there are more promising therapies in development right now than at any other time in history. Tremendous progress is being made and the ultimate goal is to find treatments that not only modify the disease, but also helps stop it in its tracks. The Walk MS fundraising supports research that will result in the next generation of treatments. In 2012 alone, the National Society invested $43 million to support 350 research projects around the world, while providing programs and services that assist more than 1 million people. Members in our area obtain support and services through the Mid Florida MS Chapter located in Tampa and Maitland, FL.

We are asking you to support the efforts of the Society and the MS Walk, April 26th at the Lowry Park Zoo. The second fundraiser is also in April - April 12 and 13. This is Bike MS: The Citrus Tour. It is a 150 mile cycling, two-day event. The event starts at Bok Towers (Lake Wales) and the participants cycle to Orlando. The next day they cycle back to Bok Towers. It is a fun event with dinner for the cyclists and two days of cycling. This event is also very large and usually draws 900+ riders. The money that the National MS Society raises also goes to the double-pronged goals, research to find a cure for MS as well as programs to educate and assist individuals with this chronic disease. The NMSS has one of the lowest administrative cost programs in the country - millions of dollars go to research into this disease as well as support too individual needs. The mid-Florida Chapter of the NMSS encompasses Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, plus 20 more counties. For more information please contact Rita Schallenberger at (813) 961-5510 or morrisandrita@verizon.net.

Running Center Tampa Bay – The Runner’s Running Store By Alexis Selby With a huge passion for running and an extensive knowledge of the industry, 15 years ago Bill Davison opened Running Center Tampa Bay. A family owned and operated community-based business, Running Center is a unique store that specializes in apparel, shoes, accessories and everything and anything you can think of that relates to running. Carrying all major brands of shoes, and over 100 different styles and designs to choose from, Running Center has something for everybody – whether you are a race champion training to win your next race or a casual walker looking for a way to stay in shape. Bill says, “We cater to both runners and walkers and offer professionally selected merchandise and personally fitted products – that’s what really makes us different. We offer quality products at very competitive prices.” As a Certified Pedorthist, Bill has

specialized training in lower limb anatomy and a much greater understanding of the biomechanics of the feet, allowing him to help his customers with unprecedented knowledge and expert advice. This, coupled with over 40 years of being an avid runner, gives Bill a comprehensive perspective in all aspects of footwear and any and all running-related issues. If you are looking for personalized attention and an extremely knowledgeable staff who really knows running, you have come to the right place! Together Bill, his store manager Dustin Hicks, and the rest of their experienced staff are dedicated to helping their customers find exactly what they are looking for. “What we offer is the experience,” says Bill. “We have the most knowledgeable sales associates in the entire Tampa Bay area. They all have a very high level of expertise and are all seasoned runners.” By taking the time to listen to their customers and addressing any

concerns and questions they may have, the staff is able to professionally recommend the best products, accessories, apparel and shoes. “We can relate to runners, because we are all runners ourselves,” adds Bill. “We have all run in many of the different shoes we sell so we understand the differences between them.” Running Center carries women’s sizes 5 – 13 and men’s sizes 8 – 15 and also offers a variety of different width options. “We offer a better selection of accommodative inserts than any where else in Tampa Bay,” says Bill. “And, with my experience as a Pedorthist, I am able to custom fit inserts to any shoe.” Whether you run, walk, or jog one thing is certain – the proper shoes can make all the difference in the world and can be the determining factor between winning a race and suffering an injury. Such problems might seem minor at the time, but without proper footwear, these minor issues can become more serious and cause more pain and problems in the future. By using their video gait analysis system, the staff at Running Center is able to help athletes and runners run more effectively by examining their gait and identifying their running style. This gives them the most accurate feedback as to your tendencies while you run, allowing them to expertly recommend and fit the proper running

To further assist them in finding the right shoe, Running Center also has a machine that measures foot compression and length. Bill is so confident in his staff and their ability to recommend the perfect shoe that he offers an 30 day unconditional guarantee on each pair that he sells; if you have a problem with your new shoes and they just don’t fit right, take them back, and they will help you find a new pair!

“We do very well with beginning runners as well as runners and walkers of all skill levels,” says Bill. “Fit and selection are the two most important factors in accommodating runners. If you get a shoe that fits right it can make a huge difference. My goal is to have customers come in here and say that shoe was made for my foot!” Bill says, “My favorite part about what I do is meeting new people; I am very people-oriented. We have a lot of

interesting people that come in here. Runners and walkers tend to be really nice, happy people and I really enjoy developing relationships with customers and finding out the things they are doing and the adventures they are going on.” Since opening, The Running Center has collected over 10000 pairs of reusable running shoes for the homeless and has also helped many charities by providing race numbers, gift certificates and professional race administration advice. They continue to be a location for race registration and race information for the entire Tampa Bay Area. If you have a usable pair of shoes or race tee shirts, please drop them off at their store and they will get it to a homeless facility. Getting To Know Dr. Rhonda Johnson and Plantation Animal Hospital I am Dr. Rhonda Johnson and I have owned and operated Plantation Animal Hospital for over three years. This animal hospital has been in the same location for over 28 years. Since October, 2010, when I purchased the practice, we have grown by 300%. Most of our growth has been through word of mouth. Our clients have been great to refer family, neighbors and friends. It is hard to believe that after eighteen and a half years I finally accomplished my goal of owning my own practice. I did not choose veterinary medicine: it chose me and I am very glad that it did. In 1990, I married my husband and the military took us from California to Iowa. I was unable to use my science teaching credential in the Iowa public school system. I had attended UC Davis for my undergraduate degree and thought about veterinary medicine as a career, but at that time it was not financially possible to get the volunteer experience needed and pay the tuition. I guess it was meant to be

though because the military stationed us in Ames, Iowa, with a veterinary school at Iowa State University. I started the application process and was accepted. I loved vet school. In 1995, I graduated and we moved back to Florida where my husband had grown up. I took a position as an associate veterinarian in St. Petersburg. I spent ten years working in St. Petersburg then moved to Tampa. In Tampa I have worked at CountryChase Veterinary and Bayshore Animal Clinic. In 2006, I began to look for a practice to buy. I approached Dr. McCampbell, the owner of Plantation Animal Hospital, which was only a few miles from my home. He said he would think about selling. In 2010, I received a call from, Dr. McCampbell, who was ready to sell and needed to move quickly. He had taken another job. The rest is a bit of a blur. I not only purchased the practice but inherited a great staff. We started with

three employees and now have ten. I have hired through family of employees and recommendations from staff and friends. I have a great group of people to work with and help your pets. We added a third exam room, a new reception desk, in-house blood analyzers and a new phone and computer system. We have a new dental machine, anesthesia machine and new patient warming and monitoring equipment. In October of 2013, we were lucky enough to add a second full time experienced veterinarian to our staff. Dr. Ellen Bishai is well educated, with a PhD and a DVM, and she is a great communicator. She has been a fantastic addition. The entire group of team members at Plantation Animal Hospital believes in providing the most up to date and caring services for your furry family members. Longtime Carrollwood Resident Publishes His First Novel Michael Shahnasarian, Ph.D., a longtime business owner and resident of Carrollwood, has recently released his first novel, Justice Indicted. After completing a doctorate in counseling psychology at Florida State University, Dr. Shahnasarian founded Career Consultants of America, Inc. (CCA) in Carrollwood. CCA has specialized in career development, human resources consultation, life care planning, and vocational rehabilitation since its inception in 1986. From his research and vast experiences over the years, he has authored eleven nonfiction books, and seventy articles, book chapters, and monographs. Dr. Shahnasarian has also developed a standardized test used by vocational experts worldwide to facilitate evaluation of a person’s earning capacity through systematic analysis and appraisal. Justice Indicted, Dr. Shahnasarian’s first work of fiction, is a thriller in which he uses his knowledge and legal system experience to create a story that is at once educational and quite entertaining. Over the past 30 years, he has committed a considerable portion of his practice to work as a forensic expert witness on vocational and

life-care-plan issues for both the prosecution and defense. Dr. Shahnasarian has performed expert witness work locally, statewide, nationally and internationally. He is well known in the legal community here in Tampa and throughout Florida, and he has testified in countless trials over the years. He derived his inside knowledge to write Justice Indicted from his more than two-and-a-half decades of experience as a forensic witness. Justice Indicted is a fictional take on civil litigation in the Florida. It depicts a war hero, who, soon after his discharge from MacDill Air Force Base, is in a vehicular accident that claims the life of his wife and leaves him severely injured and a single parent of a 4-year-old girl. While he aims

to be fairly compensated for his losses and to move-on with his life, greedy business executives and self-serving lawyers have a different agenda, and pursuing litigation is the war hero’s only recourse. The story takes place primarily in Carrollwood and South Tampa, in addition to other familiar areas throughout the Tampa Bay area. As the story develops, readers are ex-

posed to behind-the-scenes events that are common to the litigation process, but not generally known to the public. When asked his purpose in writing Justice Indicted, Dr. Shahnasarian says his objective was to provide an entertaining story through which he could educate the public on commonplace happenings that occur during litigation, many of which appear to be the opposite of promoting justice. Having performed an average of between 100 and 150 expert evaluations annually, provided approximately 50 depositions per year, and testified in up to 20 trials each year, Dr. Shahnasarian has gained an appreciation and understanding of the inner workings of the Florida justice system, giving him a unique perspective into its processes and shortcomings. Dr. Shahnasarian lives in Carrollwood with his wife Jean and their three West Highland terriers, and they have three adult children. Justice Indicted can be purchased at Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, and Overmountain Press, the book’s publisher. Many of his nonfiction books can be purchased at Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.

“Yoga/Jiu-Jitsu” Continued from page 1 both really dedicated to teaching, and enjoy the fine details involved. We spend a lot of time and effort studying our craft and we take that and put it forwar d through the studio. The passion and love of teaching is something that we both share.”

Palm Yoga

A modern day symbol of peace, tranquility and wellbeing, the ancient practice of yoga has the ability to enhance your life mentally, physically and spiritually. “Yoga is my passion,” says Rebecca Wood, owner of Palm Yoga. “I love yoga, and how it has this remarkable ability to transform peoples’ lives in whatever areas they are looking to make changes.” Rebecca is so much more than a yoga instructor; she is a teacher who prepares her students for life and guides them on the path to living a successful, peaceful existence. She says, “Yoga is not meant to be just an exercise, it is about preparing your body for bigger and better things. There are so many more health benefits than just the exercise itself. Yoga helps increase your health and stamina, prevents injury, keeps your joints healthy, can reduce stress, decrease anxiety and depression and overall make you a happier person. Our approach to yoga is that it creates health from the inside out. It detoxifies the body, makes organs function better, increases circulation and builds strength and flexibility in muscles. In addition, our classes teach students how to breathe properly. I can’t think of one aspect of yoga that doesn’t benefit your health.” As a yogi myself, I am a true believer in the power of yoga, and since beginning my practice over a year ago yoga has helped me in so many different aspects of my life; it has helped me realize a greater sense of self and has given me more self confidence. “I have been going to Palm Yoga for a little over a year and I LOVE IT,” writes student Gayle M. “I love how individualized they are; they get to know your issues and work with you in order for you to have a beneficial experience. All the instructors do equally well at encouraging you to do what you can while motivating you to challenge yourself. You get to know the instructors and the regular classmates and I feel like I belong to a little yoga community!” Following her love and passion for yoga, after her first child was born, Rebecca took to the streets in hopes of starting her own studio. Wheeling

around her newborn in a wagon, she handed out flyers, trying to get new members, and rented a space in a local dance studio. “Before I even opened I had people signed up for class,” says Rebecca, “and after the first 8 months we grew so I moved to a bigger space on Dale Mabry.” To better accommodate her growing number of students, after 10 years at that location, Rebecca recently moved her studio January of this year to the new facility located at 11732 North Dale Mabry Hwy. in Tampa. “At Palm Yoga there is this overall sense of love and caring and trust,” says Rebecca. “We have a really strong sense of community. My job is to meet you where you are and make you comfortable. We use yoga props and give pose alternatives for those who need to modify their workout and our instructors are very hands on. We address all types of learners and offer classes for every skill level, from beginners, to intermediate to advanced.” Rebecca also sells yoga DVDs, which she, herself, produced, including Yoga for Kids and a Restorative Yoga 2-disc DVD. For more information please call Palm Yoga at (813) 951-3450. Unique to the Tampa Bay area, Palm yoga incorporates a yoga wall into many of their classes and even has specific classes that are solely taught on the wall. She also teaches yoga workshops on the wall. Rebecca says,” The yoga wall is great for people that don’t have the strength to come into an inverted posture and for students who are looking to get a deeper stretch. The stretching provides traction to the spine and creates space between the vertebrae and takes pressure off the nerves. You can do all sorts of twisting postures, standing postures and forward bends. It is very therapeutic in nature for the body.” Rebecca’s mission is to make yoga accessible to all people, regardless of age, physical condition or skill level. She believes everyone is capable of doing some type of yoga and is dedicated to making this true for all people that come to Palm Yoga looking for a positive yoga experience. So, whether you are looking for weight loss, stress relief or a deeper connection to life, Palm Yoga offers you a way to achieve your desired goals. Rebecca says, “Yoga is truly for every body; there isn’t one person that couldn’t benefit from the practice of yoga” Palm Yoga is located at 11732 North Dale Mabry in Tampa in the Main Street Shopping Plaza near Michael’s Grill and the new Villagio Theaters. Relson Gracie Black Belt and Phil Migliarese, 3rd degree Relson Gracie Black Belt, owners of Balance Studios in Philadelphia. “Ryan Deichert is one of the best Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Instructors in the United States, and Tampa is very lucky to have him teaching and running a school. He really is one of the best students that has come out of the Gracie Academy (Royce and Rorian Gracie) in California and in Hawaii (Relson Gracie). We are honored to have him and his students represent our family and Team Balance in Tampa, Florida. I would highly recommend this school if you are looking for Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Tampa. Ryan trained with the Gracies and teaches the original self defense system that was created by the late Grand Master Helio Gracie.” Teaching self-defense while instilling confidence and discipline, Jiu-Jitsu is an excellent form of exercise and is a great way to meet new people and form long lasting relationships with like-minded individuals. Whether you are seeking Jiu-Jitsu as a hobby, or are looking to one day be a black belt competitor, the benefits from Jiu-Jitsu are amazing! “Teaching Jiu-Jitsu was

JiuJitsu helps students to form close relationships and gain friends, while bringing all walks of life together. Generally the number one reason people get into Jiu-Jitsu is the element of self defense, but it usually turns into that it was something that was missing in their life, whether it was fitness, friends or something else; it evolves into something more that just fighting.” Using humane alternatives to

punching and kicking, at Tampa JiuJitsu, their teachings focus on self-defense and submission tactics, as opposed to striking, and students are uniquely trained to defend themselves in real life situations by immobilizing their opponent. “We teach pure JiuJitsu style,” says Ryan. “My goal is to teach a self-defense class in which somebody can use the learned moves in self defense against people who are bigger, stronger, and faster and win the confrontation without throwing a

single punch or kick.” Tampa Jiu-Jitsu offers classes for every age and skill level, whether you are brand new to Jiu-Jitsu or have been training your whole life. They offer five beginner classes a week for adults and have a kids program four days a week, as well as intermediate and advanced level classes. Welcome to Your New Carrollwood Publix! By Pam Sica The nearly yearlong wait is finally over and the big hoopla of the grand opening has died down, and now the new Carrollwood Publix, located on the northwest corner of Fletcher and Dale Mabry, is proudly reopening to the Carrollwood community! The original Publix didn’t just get the traditional facelift a Publix remodel typically offers; instead, it was expanded from 38,000 sq. feet to over 49,000 sq. ft. and totally revamped inside and out with a new format particularly suited for this area. Media Relations Manager, Brian West states, “We are excited to offer this new store to our customers in the Carrollwood area. Our Specialty Cheese section, Wine section – with a Wine Steward, and Event Planning provide some unique products and services for our customers.” Are you up for a whirlwind tour? Let’s do it! The main entrance is located on the northeast side of the building, where upon entering, you instantly stop and smell the roses, literally! What an attractive welcome, to say the least. Beyond the beautiful arrangements of ready to go flowers, there are also trained florists

The totally revamped, 49,000 sq. ft. Publix in Carrollwood is located at the corner of Fletcher and Dale Mabry on staff to help customers with specific needs right on the spot or to help them plan for special occasions in the future. If the flowers don’t tempt you right away, move to the left and you are greeted by charming Customer Service personnel who really do strive to make your shopping experience a pleasure – a legacy that would make founder George Jenkins proud. If you follow your nose, you’ll go with the natural flow off to the right, first encountering the Bakery with all of its wonderful breads, pies, cakes et al.

Mid aisle, you are enticed by an easily accessible Hot Bar, laden with prepared meals, soups and salad, where you can dish out your own lunch or dinner fare by the pound. It’s absolutely the perfect way to get a nutritious, wholesome and tasty hot meal for you and your family when time is an issue. Don’t want to take it home? Wander over to the quiet café off to the right and enjoy your meal while just people watching or by taking advantage of the free instore Wi-Fi. A bit further on, you’ll see an Olive Bar and a Gourmet Cheese case. Can’t seem to find what you need? Just ask the Cheese Specialist or the Prepared Food Specialist who is bound to be in the area ready to assist in any way. But wait! I saved the best for last – the Event Planning center. You have to stop in and check them out, especially if you have a big event coming up or even if you just need sandwiches made for a business lunch. They will help you by procuring all your event needs throughout the store (one stop shop). My husband will love this! “Ballyhoo” Continued from page 1 selections that both land-lovers and sealovers can enjoy. “From delicious burgers to the freshest seafood in town, we have it all; and no matter what you order it’s going to be great,” says General Manager and Head Chef Mike Hayes. Infusing his New Orleans style of cooking into many of the menu items, Chef Mike puts a spin on some of your classic favorites to create selections that have a completely new style and flare. Providing guests with a unique dining atmosphere, at Ballyhoo Grill in Tampa, you choose the experience you want to get – whether you unwind on their beautiful outdoor patio underneath the shade of their tiki huts, enjoy a romantic dinner in their intimate private dining room, or have a little fun at their bar as you sip on one of their signature cocktails. Ballyhoo has a full-liquor bar, complete with daily specials, and brags of some of the best sangria in town. From upscale entrees to casual lunches, this restaurant has it all! Mike says, “We offer guests fine dining in a casual atmosphere at a very reasonable price.” My husband and I are huge fishing fanatics, and as such, a yearly trip to the Keys is always marked on our calendar. Thus, we are very familiar with the Keys way of life. From the moment we walked through their doors, we were impressed with how well Ballyhoos embodied the Keys vision, and walking up the front porch we felt as if we had just come off of Duval street in Key West; all that was missing from this Keys-like experience was the ocean itself. After taking a peak at the completely revamped menu we were even more impressed with what they had to offer. Featuring soups such as their famous She Crab Soup and New Orleans Gumbo to Shrimp and Oystyer Po Boys, Prime Rib Phillies and Pulled Pork Sandwiches; they also have a deli-

For the veggie lovers out there, they have a great selection of salads, such as their Soy Glazed Tuna Chop Chop Salad, Salmon Ceasar Salad and Seafood Cobb Salad. But that is not all! Making up the other portion of the menu are pasta choices, such as their Seafood Pescatore and Lobster Mac and Cheese, entrees such as Filet Mignon, St. Louis Ribs and Chicken Piccatta, and of course, last but certainly not least – their seafood! Whether you are in the mood for raw Oysters, #1 sushi grade Tuna, a delicious Cedar Planked Salmon, Oak Grilled Scallops, Live Main Lobster, or Bimini Stuffed Grouper, you are sure to be pleased with your choice. Feeling a little adventurous? You also have the option to create your own fish entrée by selecting your fish and pairing it with one of their amazing sauces and preparations. Mike highly recommends you try their Citrus Champagne sauce – a favorite among guests at Ballyhoo Grill.

On our previous visit Mike suggested we try their Lobster Risotto stuffed Sea bass topped with Mango Chutney, and all I can say is WOW! “We have some of the best Sea Bass you will ever have,” adds Mike. The deliciously buttery flavor of the sea bass combined with the creamy risotto fill-

ing and sweet zing of the mango chutney made for an excellent trio, and cooked perfectly, the fish flaked off and simply melted in my mouth with each bite. This entrée was complemented with a side of vegetables – sautéed zucchini, squash and mushrooms in a pomodora sauce – that was really tasty.

Ballyhoo Grill has a laid-back island feel that instantly transports guests to the Florida keys. His second recommendation was the Swordfish topped with Jumbo Shrimp Scampi, and it was nothing short of amazing! This New Orleans style shrimp scampi presentation boasted a lemony sauce that perfectly complemented the flavor of the fish and, served with jumbo shrimp, each bite was an explosion of flavor. Once again served with the vegetable medley, this entrée is sure to please! In addition to their regular menu items, Ballyhoo also offers some excellent off-the-menu specials every week-

end. “Our weekend seafood specials are unbelievable,” says Mike. “They are so popular, we usually end up running out of a lot of our specials by the end of the weekend, so come in early to take advantage of what we have to offer.” The specials change weekly so stay up-todate by checking their Facebook page or Twitter. Ballyhoo Grill has Happy hour specials from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. every day, which includes 2 for 1 house wines, wells and selected calls. They have a really nice, outdoor patio complete with tiki

One customer writes, “Ballyhoo Grill is great. It's a hidden jewel that will surprise you with constantly great food. An eclectic menu that revolves around local favorites, Ballyhoo's focus is seafood favorites. Last time I was
