Happy Father’s Day!!

them something new. A good dad is a teacher, a mentor, and when their kids grow up, he’s a friend. I’m very lucky to say my dad has been all of those things for me and more, and even though I am 27 my dad is still my best friend! Fathers Day isn’t just for biological fathers either. All father figures deserve a pat on the back for simply being supportive and involved in their child’s life. While we applaud those fathers who give their all, day-in and day-out, we know far too many fathers are absent in their child’s life.

I’d like to take this opportunity in my editorial space this month to say Happy Fathers Day to all the great dads out there in New Tampa! You know who you are; the ones who spend as much time as possible with their family and do all they can to provide for them to give them the best life possible, not because they

feel obligated to, but because they want to. When you strip away all the fat, no pun intended for all the fathers rockin’ the “dad bod” (google “dad bod” if you haven’t heard of it ladies) a good dad is someone who is always there for their kids when they need them; whether it be to help with homework, give advice, or teach

You don’t have to be a “perfect” dad, just strive to be the best you can be. We take this day to honor all those dads who put in the extra effort it takes to be a good father. Some may call it a “Hallmark holiday”, but just remember, we should be thankful every day of the year for our fathers and what they mean to us, but taking a little extra time on Fathers Day to make that day all about them, makes every father feel like superman. And, that’s exactly how he should feel, because if you’re like me, your dad is your hero!

Tampa Palms Women’s Club Annual Scholarship Luncheon Honoring their USF scholarship winner, Amanda Mumby, the Tampa Palms Women’s Club hosted their annual Scholarship Luncheon on June 4 at the Tampa Palms Community Clubhouse. This amazing group of ladies raised funds for the scholarship throughout the year, much of which came from their Community Wide Yard Sale, held in March. The women also recognized representatives of OASIS, which had previously received funds from the ladies’ annual fashion show. Acknowledged for her charitable work and philanthropic efforts, scholarship winner Amanda Mumby is a junior pursuing her bachelor’s degree in social work. After finishing her bachelor’s degree, she plans on pursuing a master’s degree in the same field of study. As a full-time student and fulltime employee, she balances her academic studies with a job at the Department of Veterans Affairs. In Veteran Affairs, she works in the medical records section, specifically health care. It’s during her time there that she developed a passion to serve veterans. With her degrees, she hopes to smooth

Are the kids driving you crazy and playing too many video games this summer? Want to have them do something healthy and learn a lifelong sport? Ace Golf is offering a free summer golf practice program for kids age 5 to 15. Every day from June 1 through the end of August, kids can sign up to receive a free small bucket of range balls each day for the whole summer. Kids hit the balls on the Ace Practice Ranges in Brandon and Riverview, at the Pebble Creek Golf Club in New Tampa, or at Wentworth Golf Club or Crescent Oaks Country Club in Tarpon Springs. “There are a lot of families out there that just can’t afford to put kids in camps but still want the kids to be out learning a skill or just getting some exercise”, says Bill Place, owner of Ace Golf Ranges and Golf Courses. "We want to help, and hopefully in the process we will find some kids that love golf"

How it works: Children may sign up for free at any of five Ace Golf locations in Brandon, Riverview, Tampa and Tarpon Springs. Lana from Syria stated, “It was fun and I learned a lot about different countries.” The educational value was immense and without-adoubt this experience enriched everyone’s global knowledge. There was a plethora of delicious food as well. In addition to local restaurants, parents, teachers, family, and friends generously donated food to the event. Some of the local restaurants that donated cultural food

included: New China King, Café Ole, Little Greek, Saffron Indian Cuisine, Subway, Greenland Restaurant, Tijuana Flats, and Publix. Nikhil from India proclaimed, “All the ethnic food was great!” Guests surely didn’t go hungry! “There are so many talented people and organizations in our community and there are so many generous businesses and families who donated time and food,” says Dr. Deborah Wheeler, ESOL Resource Teacher at Heritage Elementary School. “We are very lucky to have many events here at Heritage that bring these incredible people together!” Continuing outside in the courtyard, were many more fun and exciting events, where children and adults enjoyed making an array of cultural crafts. Children had the chance to decorate Khamsa hands, Japanese fans, multicultural bracelets, and make Chinese drums, to name a few crafts. Face painting and henna artwork were very popular as well. When asked what their favorite part of the entire festival was, students replied, “Everything!” Indeed, it was a fun time for everyone

This international event offered guests an opportunity for everyone to adorn their traditional cultural attire and the culminating cultural fashion parade was visually beautiful. While students walked across the stage to display their cultural outfits, Miguel Ardila’s band played Latin American music. The evening concluded with families laughing, dancing, and singing delightedly to the music. Mrs. MaryJo Stover, the principal of Heritage, proudly declared, “This end-of-the-year event represents the diverse cultures of our school and exemplifies our family atmosphere. She proudly added, “The Multicultural Festival is not only a great way to connect with community stakeholders, but it enables families from around the world to come together to celebrate and share culture.” Uniting the community for this family-friendly event, Heritage Elementary School’s annual Multicultural Festival did a fabulous job of showcasing, educating, and celebrating cultural diversity in New Tampa.

Scott was "present" the entire time he was in our home, not taking or making phone calls and not talking about other customers or taking a smoke break. SwimStart Academy Teaches Swimming Across All Ages And Abilities! Summer is finally here, and as schools let out for the long anticipated summer break, kids will inevitably flock to the pools and the beach, hoping to enjoy the beautiful weather and warm water! Living in Florida, swimming and water safety should be a huge priority among parents, especially those who have a pool or plan on visiting the beach, and it is imperative that before going in the water, you make sure your child is prepared and ready. Committed to producing safer, skilled, and happy swimmers while building self-esteem and a love for the water, SwimStart Academy teaches students of all ages, from infants just learning how to swim, all the way through to adults and kids looking to compete at a competitive level. Teaching swimming in the comfort of your own pool, owners and head instructors Herm Weinberg and Adam DeLuca come to you at your convenience and will work around your

schedule to help make swimming an easily attainable priority. “Our focus is to provide these services at your home pool, because we believe water safety starts here,” says Herm. “Plus, the added benefit of not traveling can help make learning to swim a priority for you and your child.” With a passion for swimming that stems back to when he was a young boy, Herm proudly follows in the footsteps of his father. “My father was a PE teacher and he also had a summer camp,” says Herm. “Swimming was a big part of the camp so I was always around water from a very young age. During World War II my father also taught women in the Navy how to

swim. One day he took me along with him to the University of Pennsylvania to watch and I just jumped in the water and swam to him – I was only 3 years old. I guess I was trying to impress the women, even back then.” From there his love for swimming only continued to grow, and by the time he was 18, Herm was already teaching swimming for the American Red Cross – and that’s just the beginning! With over 55 years experience as a swim instructor, Herm has an extraordinary repertoire when it comes to aquatic instruction, including 35 years experience as a professor at the University of South Florida where he

taught students who were majoring in Physical Education. He has also held the title of Aquatics Director at numerous community centers and summer camps and has certifications as an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, YMCA swim instructor, and SwimUniversity swimming instructor. In addition to being a USA Swimming Stroke and turn judge, starter and deck referee, as well as a YMCA level 2 swim official, Herm is also certified as a swim official by the Florida High School Athletic Association. Having over 30 years of experience as a swimmer, Adam began his swim career at a very young age when he took lessons as an infant at the YMCA. An All-American swimmer in both high school and college and a former Nationally ranked triathlete, Adam’s credentials surely are impressive! Adam has been a swim coach for several top swim programs and has helped children of all ages to qualify for the Junior Olympics in swimming. He is also a certified Swim America Instructor and most recently achieved certification from the SwimUniversity program. Herm’s daughter Alexis is also an instructor at SwimStart Academy and her swimming background is quite extensive as well. Captain of her high

She already has over four years experience teaching swimming for local swim clubs. With their extensive qualifications, immense passion for the water and love of teaching, Herm, Adam and Alexis can not only prepare your child for the water, but can help them surpass their highest expectations. Herm says, “We have taught babies, to preschool children to competitive swimmers to tri-athletes.” Teaching swimmers of all ages and abilities, SwimStart Academy offers four areas of focus to better meet your swimming needs, each of which are uniquely designed to maximize progress using proven methods and effective techniques.

Parent and Tot

Beginning Swimming

Designed for children ages 6 months to two years old, in the Parent and Tot class, the parent assists their child, helping them to become more comfortable with getting in the water. The classes begin with swim and safety and progresses to basic swimming skills. Your child will learn things like staying afloat, finding the side of the pool, and kicking. “Florida has the highest rate of drowning for pre-school kids in the nation, so it is very important to teach your kid how to swim,” says Herm. “Water safety is extremely important. It goes beyond just learning how to swim. A lot of it includes teaching and informing the parents as well, such as learning about supervision and the importance of putting a gate around your pool. I don’t want children to be afraid of the water. I want them to enjoy the water, but also respect it.”

Specially designed for the novice swimmer, the beginning swimming classes start with teaching general swimming techniques, such as front and back float, and progresses to all the basic strokes. This is also the class where adult non-swimmers would start.

Pre-competitive Once you reach the pre-competitive level, instructors will begin to work on strengthening your competitive stroke mechanics and turns, in preparation for swim team participation.

Tri-athletes In the tri-athlete-level classes, instructors will work on strengthening your stroke mechanics. Plus, they will also provide you with workouts that will increase your speed and endurance and help to prepare you for open

water swimming and fast transitions. SwimStart Academy is currently offering six-lesson packages for only $180. Scheduled twice a week at your convenience, each lesson includes 20 minutes of instruction, as well as suggestions and instruction as to what the learner can do in between lessons to help maximize their progress. No matter what your level or desired swimming goals, the experienced instructors at SwimStart Academy will help you excel and have you swimming like a fish in no time! The Red Cross Needs YOU Do you know what your American Red Cross does? I'll bet you are nodding your head – you think you do. Everyone thinks of the Red Cross as the big disaster people – hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes – especially here in Florida where we get all three. It is what you see on television, whenever there is a big crisis. They are at every major disaster before the TV cameras arrive, and long after they are gone to help feed and shelter those who have lost everything. They give hugs. They give hope. They help communities endure. But the biggest disaster they respond to is not a tornado, flood or hurricane. It's not a man-made disaster like a train derailment or a plane crash. More than 90% of the disasters they respond to are local home fires right here in our community every day. On average here in Tampa Bay there is a home fire nearly every single night – about 350 per year. To the family that loses everything that night it's a big disaster – one of the worst days of their lives – and the

Red Cross is there. When a family loses their home and has no place to go, the fire department calls the Red Cross, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Volunteers from the Red Cross respond immediately, having a continuous commitment to be on scene within 2 hours. They verify the situation and take care of the family's needs, making sure they have a roof over their heads that night, that they have food and clothing, that the kids are ready to go to school the next day. Nurses are on call that can help replace medications and eyeglasses, and the Red Cross gives a small toy to the child who lost all of their cherished belongings and needs something soft to cuddle; but that's just the beginning. In the days and weeks that follow, trained Red Cross volunteer caseworkers help that family on their road to recovery; making sure they aren't alone; making sure they have access to every community resource available. Unless you've been in the unfortunate circumstance to suffer a house fire you probably don't know

that's what keeps our local Red Cross volunteers busy every day. Over 90% of the work done by the Red Cross is done by volunteers. These special people make a difference in someone’s life every day. Volunteers like Lisa, who tells the story of one of the fires she responded to: “ I was called to the scene of a burn-

ing house at 8:30 one night. The elderly lady who lived there had left a space heater too close to a curtain and it sent her wood frame home up in flames very quickly. She called 911 and ran out with nothing in her hands but her cat and car keys. She was left with nothing. Nothing. When my team arrived she was sit-
