South Tampa: A Growing Area With So Much To Offer! By Garrison Hamilton Fall is finally approaching and despite Florida’s apparent lack of change in season, it is certainly a time of change in people’s lives. New students arrive for their first semesters while others, many college graduates, are branching out to find new opportunities in our local communities. This is a journey that is not always easy, especially considering all of the changes we’ve weathered in our local and global economies. We are not only concerned with our potential growth but with the opportunities our environments offer in professional sectors as well as those of lifestyle and entertainment. For those of us who have chosen to remain close to the Tampa Bay area and set roots in a new environment, we’ve probably already been approached with the prospects of South Tampa. As a pitch and maybe even with a bit of experience it makes some sense; sure, South Tampa is closer to the city’s downtown area and entertainment, but what does it really do

for me? Initially it’s useful to recognize that South Tampa, as often casually referenced, is much more than our South Howard, or “SoHo” district, and that Tampa, as it’s known, has literally grown from its Southern quadrant. South Tampa, in a historic sense, is more appropriately central Tampa. Since the 1891 construction and opening of The Tampa Bay Hotel and, later, the establishment of MacDill Air Force Base in 1941, Tampa’s most progressive development and commerce has been fo- Tampa offers a plethora of entertainment and activities, including the many exciting shows cused near and South of and performances at the Tampa Convention Center. proximity changes. It is only natural that we begin to prioritize and think inwardly-urban, so why not look to live there too? Do not fear! Spend a few days in South Tampa in exchange for your time otherwise spent in the suburbs or quietly removed housing developments and you’ll notice that, not only is everything you’re used to provided, but there is also much more to be had! There is a plethora of entertainment here that isn’t found anywhere else in Tampa. Consider the convention center and its many annual show-

cases or the performances and Broadway shows at David Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts. Even if your favorite artists aren’t already visiting either of these they’re most likely to be seen at the Channelside’s Amalie Arena. Historic Ybor City, not quite South Tampa but still within proximity, still cannot be discounted. It has its own trove of local charm in the way of theaters, shopping and authentic eateries. It has become increasingly apparent that the district has garnered a new and desirable daytime culture.

“Foodies” unite! “Good eats” are definitely not in short supply in South Tampa. Some of our city’s biggest and most popular restaurants reside here: Bern’s Steak House, Datz, The Hyde Out, and Fresh Kitchen, just to name a few, are all recognizable names with enticing, exciting and healthy menus created with your exploration in mind. Often hand-in-hand with the aforementioned arts are South Tampa’s abundance of parks and outdoor activities. Undeniably, a city favorite is the annual ice-skating in the scenic, green Curtis Hixon Park. And if ice-skating in Florida still isn’t

enough to enchant all audiences, surely the romantic waterside location nestled between the unique Downtown Tampa skyline and the riverside Tampa Bay Hotel and University of Tampa will. It is easy to understand how all the activity and perceived pace of South Tampa might impress anyone not used to urban areas. If one were to overlook all of entertainment and enjoyment to be had in the malls, eateries, clubs, and theaters, you’ll learn what South Tampa offers best is a community of like minded and progressive individuals of diverse backgrounds and influence, each with a love and interest in building something for themselves and representing our city. Around nearly every corner of South Tampa today you will find impressive examples of betterment and positive initiative to foster an environment that grows and improves itself. For these few reasons, and so many more unmentioned, is why South Tampa is the place to be. We welcome this new season and the coming year for you to discover this for yourself.

Trinity Family Physicians Announces the First Recipient of the Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award Dr. Amir Shirmohammad and Dr. Stephanie Eldridge appreciate the great response to the inaugural Trinity Family Physicians’ Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award. Trinity Family Physicians announced the Award in Neighborhood News & Lifestyles publications in July and now the physicians are excited to announce the first recipient of the Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award. Dr. Shirmo (as his patients affectionately call him) presented Jim Carow with a beautiful gift basket donated from partnering sponsor Grille 54 that was filled with wine, cheese, crackers and of course, a gift certificate to enjoy a delicious dinner at Grille 54. Nominated for his volunteer work with the IWork program at Idlewild Baptist Church in Lutz, Jim Carow makes a difference in the lives of others here in Tampa Bay! Dr. Shirmo met with Jim Carow and his wife Mary to learn more about the volunteer work they do and he shared the reason that he and Dr. Eldridge created the Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award. “My wife and I wanted to start a program where we could give back for a worthwhile cause,” said Dr. Shirmo. “Dr. Eldridge said right away, ‘Why don’t we give out an award to people in our community who are making a difference in the daily lives of others?’ We both loved the idea!” Dr. Eldridge and Dr. Shirmo grew up in Tampa Bay, fell in love in Tampa Bay, went away to earn medical degrees together and then came back to the area to open a family medical practice and raise their own family. They look for ways to promote good in the community they love and though it has been a busy time for the husband-and-wife team – Dr. Eldridge just gave birth to their third daughter in August and Dr. Shirmo volunteers as one of the team physicians for his alma mater Jesuit High School – they still found a way to honor others who are making a difference with Trinity Family Physicians’ Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award. There were some exceptional nominees and it wasn’t an easy decision for Trinity Family Physicians but they kept coming back to one email with a nominee who seemed to exemplify everything that the Tampa Bay Making A Difference Award is meant to represent. Wendy McDonnell wrote, “I

would like to nominate Jim Carow for your Tampa Bay Making a Difference Award. Jim hosts IWork out of Idlewild Baptist Church on Monday nights, where he and his team feed, bring hope to and teach those in our community who are out of work or underemployed. The support and encouragement he offers is priceless, but there is no charge for the help or the dinner. “IWork is a safe place to share personal stories and be vulnerable during a tough time in your life. With Jim leading, his team gives advice on interviewing, resume building, networking, having the right attitude and researching to find the best career fit for each individual. Without IWork and Jim, there would be more hopeless people unemployed in our community, that’s why he should win your next award.”

Jim Carow Makes A Difference in Tampa Bay! Jim Carow makes a lasting difference in the lives of others by teaching them invaluable job-seeking skills, but he is humble about his involvement with Idlewild Baptist Church’s IWork program, saying, “I don’t do this alone! We have phenomenal volunteers who have been helping from day one.” The IWork program was started more than six years ago. One of the pastors came to Jim, who had a long career in recruiting for the healthcare industry, and asked him to help start a program that would focus on helping people who were actively seeking a job. While IWork does not find jobs for people, it does offer fellowship along with a workshop that teaches networking and interviewing skills. Pastor Phillip Hanes said of Jim Carow, “He is a fine man and there is a great team of volunteers who work with him. We are very thankful for this program, which hosts 25 to 60 people every Monday night.” Jim can’t say enough about the volunteers (some first came to the group seeking help) who put so much heart into the IWork program that it has morphed into much more than a workshop. It is fellowship and caring. “When we had our first meeting, we thought it would be about strategy, networking, Linked In…and we do all that, but it is so much more. The methods we teach work at all levels. We have all kinds of peo-

ple from physicians to 19-yearolds wanting to find summer jobs. We just give people hope.” He recalls the early planning of IWork with a laugh, “When they said we have to feed people, I said, ‘Do we really have to? Does every Baptist function have to include feeding Dr. Shirmohammad (L) presents Jim Carow (R), the first people? Can’t we recipient of the Tampa Bay Making a Difference Award, just teach them?’ But they were with a beautiful gift basket donated from partnering sponright. I realized sor Grille 54. early on that for some, this was churches and organizations will offer their only meal of the day. Tampa Rejuvenation - “Your Health Our Passion” Let’s face it, getting older has this awful little side effect of aging your body. As hormones deplete, our skin begins to sag and wrinkle, our sex drive declines, we gain unexplained weight, we have sleep issues, and our drive for life lessens. We cannot control time as it passes each day, but with advancements in technology and medical research, we now can slow down the negative effects of the aging process in a safe and very effective way. Tampa Rejuvenation, with its closest of 4 clinics located just west of the Selmon Expressway at 2007 W Swann Ave. in Tampa, separates themselves with their integrative approach to medicine. The physicians at Tampa Rejuvenation let their work and happy customer testimonials speak for themselves. Patient Nancy H. writes, “Tampa Rejuvenation helped me lose a very needed 30 pounds! My primary doctor was very impressed that I am now much healthier and no longer a diabetic risk. The HCG diet is healthy, safe and fast. The staff is great! They are all knowledgeable, courteous and helpful (the Doctor, the Nutritionist, medical assistants, counselors, office administrators). They monitor everything from beginning to end and will help at any time. I have also now learned how to eat healthier. Between this and the diet, I will be keeping the weight off. I feel so much better, healthier and confident. It was one of the best things I've done!” The staff at Tampa Rejuvenation is detail-oriented and patient-specific in their treatment – it’s not cookie cutter medicine. The science is out there; the treatment is available; but finding the right physicians for you can make all the difference in the world. The physicians at Tampa Rejuvenation are unique – they left the modern tunnel-vision style of medicine behind. They understand that many times conventional medicine is designed by “BIG-PHARMA“ to relieve symptoms and sometimes only masks those symptoms to make them bearable. I don’t know about you, but I sure don’t want to settle for just bearable symptoms of anything. At Tampa Rejuvenation the physicians honed in their skills with only one goal in mind – to fix the problem, not hide it. While interviewing the founder of Tampa Rejuvenation, Brett Markowitz, the simple premise of going to sleep each night and feeling good about what his team was doing is clearly at the forefront of

his business goals and morals. He and his staff are passionate about their patients and seeing improvements in their health. It’s clearly something they refuse to waiver from. Since each patient is different, with their expertise in this field of integrative medicine of anti-aging, the physicians not only focus on the lab work, but they listen to symptoms and focus on their goals when designing a customized treatment plan using bio identical hormones and treating weight issues. The physicians at Tampa Rejuvenation focus more on quality than quantity; they want a patient committed to their health; not a patient that is just interested in taking a magic pill and has unrealistic expectations – that’s a fantasy. The reality is it has to be a complete change in lifestyle. That’s why the physicians at Tampa Rejuvenation devised their year-long 4-D Longevity Plan (D-Diet “Lose up to 20lbs in 30days”, D-Daily Hormones “Focus on speeding up the metabolism and slowing the aging process”, D-Detox “Rid toxins from the body, and find out what foods are not right for you”, D-DNA Test “Designed to find what diet is best for your body long term based upon your DNA”). If you've tried at least three times to lose weight and struggle to keep it off, only to find yourself right back to where you started, or if you're one of those people who exercise regularly only to find the same scale reading day in and day out, you are a perfect can-

With a number of physicians to choose from, Tampa Rejuvenation will assign the perfect physician based on the patient’s needs. Johanna deVryer M.D. is one of the founders and has been around 8 years, leading the company’s successful growth because of the number of patients’ lives she has changed. She’s Board Certified in internal medicine and has her fellowship in anti-aging. Dr. deVryer’s primary offices of care are the New Tampa and South Tampa locations. Kent Beams, M.D. is another

4-D Longevity Plan Tampa Rejuvenation Wellness Center’s physicians believe in what they call a “4D Longevity” plan. The 4 D’s consist of DIET, DAILY HORMONES, your unique DNA, and DETOX. If you follow this plan, you're going to be successful. It’s that easy. The Diet is specially designed for each patient individually based upon their DNA. The physicians run blood work on the patient to determine what kind of diet works best for their genetic makeup. It’s science at work for you, and it really is incredible. It takes the “fad” diets and the guessing out of the equation. You finally find out what foods you need to eat for your specific body. You can even find out what foods to completely stay away from due to allergies and sensitivities you may not even know you had. The daily hormone aspect of this plan is simple. You don’t need to take a bunch of pills, injections or topical

medications anymore. Your hormone therapy is only once every 3-6 months (depending on whether you are male or female) via bio-identical hormone pellets inserted into the fat just below the skin. It’s virtually painless and takes only a few minutes.

What are the benefits of Hormone Therapy? Increase Lean Muscle Mass Decrease Body Fat Increase Sexual Function Reduce Wrinkles Decrease Cardiovascular Risk Restore Energy & Vitality Improve Well-Being & Mood Life causes stress and stress causes, well…..nothing good. No matter what your age, if you just don’t feel like yourself and are looking to run at your most optimal level, come in for a nocost evaluation. You may have felt bad for so long you forgot what optimal body function feels like, so don’t wait another day to feel rejuvenated.
