Carrollwood Brunchies Cheers for the New Millennial by Deborah Bostock-Kelley Sitting in one of the two private meeting rooms of the upscale neighborhood breakfast and brunch spot, Brunchies owner Bill Kranich described the 200 seat restaurant just beyond the wood and glass double doors. “A Cheers of the new millennial,” he said, as he looked out at the many guests of all ages enjoying breakfast in his family-friendly restaurant. Kranich is proud, that just like the

vintage 80s to 90s TV series, because he is hands on at the restaurant every day, he knows the names of all of his returning patrons. As he scanned the room, he said that there were a few new faces, but 75% were regulars who came back for good, fresh food and competitive pricing. With breakfast and lunch items served all day, Brunchies remains a favorite hangout for locals and visitors alike. A review on Yelp revealed that customers don’t have to be local to See “Brunchies” on page 24.

Sound Exchange Seeks Vintage Stereo Equipment Submitted In preparation for Record Store Day, an annual event that celebrates independent record stores and sees the release of hundreds of limited edition vinyl titles, Sound Exchange is working to increase its inventory of turntables. And the source for the company's used turntables is the same as its source for all the other used items in its stores: the public. "Sound Exchange is a marketplace," says Marketing Director and Vinyl Buyer Erin Stoy. Whether it's CDs, records, or stereo equipment, our goal is to buy people's unwanted items and then put them in the hands of those who will enjoy them." While music and movies must be in excellent condition for Sound Exchange to buy them, there is more leeway with the condition of vintage stereo equipment. Sound Exchange has in-house repair services, which allows the company to buy certain equipment even if it isn't in working order. Good quality receivers, amplifiers, reel-to-reel players, and turntables from the 1970s and early1980s can be repaired or - worst case - can often be used for parts.

Treemart is Firmly Rooted in the Tampa Community By Deborah Bostock-Kelley For nearly 29 years, Treemart, located at 12505 N. Nebraska, has been the go-to landscape nursery for wholesale and retail clients alike. With affordable plants, trees, palms, mulches, soil, fertilizer, accessories and garden accents, coupled with friendly, highly experienced employees, Treemart owners Scott and Valerie Bailey pride themselves on providing everything a do-it-yourselfer or professional landscaper could possibly need in one expansive location. “We have everything – tree-related, of course,” said Scott Bailey. “We sell a lot of trees, palms, and plants of all sizes, from 1 gallon flowers, 3 gallon hedges, 7 gallon trees to 15 gallons and all the way up. We have all sizes of trees for landscape jobs.” Bailey earned his degree in landscape architecture and worked for a landscape design firm for a year before deciding to open Treemart. Although the big box stores have forced many of the smaller garden centers to close their doors, with 5 acres of products,

12

APRIL 2016

Treemart is the largest garden center in the area and both the Baileys and Treemart remain firmly rooted in the Tampa Bay community. Treemart moves a lot of material wholesale so they feature many products that works to the benefit of retailers. Bailey said, “The products turn they don’t sit - so they are always are fresh. We bring in material from all over the state, as well as growing some at our 45 Acre tree farm in Pasco county. I love the diversity of the products that we have. We get in unusual things and we’ll order in specialty items as well as having all your basic plants.” The most common question Bailey and his team get asked is a recommendation for plants in the hot, muggy Tampa Bay climate. “All the salespeople I have know plants and know this business and what to recommend. We tell people to bring in pictures. Everyone has a cell phone these days. We tell them to take a picture of the area they want to landscape or the front of the whole house and we’ll give advice on which plants work

in which spot and how to layer it and what goes with what.” Treemart employees do their very best to accommodate the landscaping needs of their customers, despite how sometimes unusual the request may be. “We get requests for unusual palms and plants that people just can’t find. They see it on the internet or in a

magazine and we do our best to get it for them,” Bailey said. “We buy from nurseries all over the state so we will see if we can get it. Unusual plant questions are pretty common.” Treemart is set up for the do-ityourselfer who doesn’t want to hire a landscaper. “You can save a lot of money putting plants in yourself,”

utility crane to assist the customer in deliveries and setting of trees and palms in pre-dug holes or off loaded at a job site. The only thing Treemart doesn’t do is the actual landscaping. “We don’t do landscaping because we don’t want to compete with our customers,” said Bailey. “We will definitely make recommendations. We have so many wholesale landscaper customers, that we’ll be glad to give out numerous numbers to and recommend if retail customers want them. Our good landscaper customers - the ones we know do a good job - we definitely will recommend.”

Bailey said. “Our guys are good at teaching you how to do it.” Sometimes, installing a large purchased tree is not something you can do on your own, which is why Treemart is here to help. “We will install the bigger trees and palms for you, and you can do the smaller stuff

Shoppers can enjoy coffee and donuts in the morning and lemonade and iced tea in the afternoon. “We have a lot of stuff on sale between 20 and 50 percent off,” said Bailey. “It’s a really good sale.” Treemart is located at 12505 N Nebraska Ave. in Tampa. Woman-Owned Roofing Company Strives to “Turn Clients into Friends” By Deborah Bostock-Kelley Did you know that a faulty shingle or worn sealant on your roof could eventually lead to serious and costly repairs? Elite Roofing Services, guided by the mission of providing only superior customer service, will come out to your residence and provide a cost-free, no-obligation evaluation of your roof. Whether you seek to simply know the condition of your roof or have immediate plans to replace it, the full service, state-certified roofing company, will give you a home assessment – a detailed analysis and resolution to shingle, tile, flat and metal roofing issues. Elite Roofing Services can help you reduce your energy costs and keep water and moisture that can cause serious wood rot and mold, out of your home. A member of the Women’s Business Enterprise Florida, Elite Roofing Services is a women-owned commercial, industrial, and residential roofing

installer and supplier, specializing in roof maintenance and restoration. They are a Florida State Certified installer and provider of new and reroofs of all types of roofing. A recipient of the 2016 Women’s Business Enterprise Star award, Camille Austin founded Elite Roofing Services in 2004, during a very volatile hurricane season. Only months into opening her business, Austin found herself replacing roofs of 25 Denny’s throughout southwest Florida. Soon after, the construction industry crashed in 2007-2008, but Austin was able to survive and thrive through, focusing on smaller, bank owned jobs and relying heavily on marketing. But good marketing isn’t the only practice that makes the company stand out among its peers. It’s a friendly attitude, the right experienced team handling the job, transparency, integrity, and outstanding service. “We leave clients as friends,” said Austin. “Growing up in the

roofing industry, I got to grow with most of the workers and competitors as well as the suppliers. I helped other roofer friends open their own roofing business, and when I opened Elite, they helped me. We always strive to do good work and are very honest. We aim to provide clients with roofing solutions that correct the cause, not the effect.” Austin stressed that there are several important items to mark off your contractor-hiring checklist before you make a decision: only hire licensed contractors, review the contract before you sign it, make sure any required permits are in place, know the Florida Construction Lien Law, and don’t pay in cash. Although these tips seem like something anyone would think to do, Austin explained that there are unscrupulous businesses that will take advantage of client naivety. “We had a client who wanted to pay in full before

the job was even started,” she said. “It’s nice to want to trust someone, but avoid paying in advance and don’t pay for work not completed.” Honest business practices and an excellent reputation in the industry, coupled with great customer service, has helped Elite Roofing Services become a name positively recognized through Tampa Bay and the entire west coast of Florida. With a dedicated and experienced service team, Elite Roofing Services has the ability to customize and tailor client services. The company repairs and installs new roofs for all kinds of residential, commercial and industrial properties. They also install weathertight metal roofs and

“cool roofs” to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. Clients range from single family homeowners and apartment building management companies to Walmart and even Hillsborough County government. Under the skilled leadership of Elite Roofing Service’s residential manager Kim Sanford, a construction

industry veteran, the residential department of the company has seen a hundred percent growth in a single year. Elite Roofing Services also has a county maintenance contract with Hillsborough County Fire Stations and recently re-shingled several stations. Today, Austin is proud of stable growth, having zero debt, and having

a long-term staff of 22 part and fulltime loyal employees in a fickle industry, and is looking forward to expanding, with new branches in Pinellas County. She said, “You deserve to have cost-effective, quality roofing options when selecting a roofing service provider. Our goal is to always leave a

Creating edible works of art, Osaka Sushi & Grill brings a true taste of Japanese culture to the Carrollwood community! Located in the Palms of Carrollwood Shopping Center just south of Ehrlich Rd and Dale Mabry Hwy., the best part is you don’t have to travel far to enjoy some of the best sushi in Tampa Bay! However, even if you do live a bit further away, I can promise you, the food is definitely worth the drive! Just over a month old, Osaka opened it’s doors to customers for the first time this past February, and since then has already experienced an overwhelming response from the community. Guests truly appreciate the exceptional dining experience and uniquely authentic food that Osaka Sushi & Grill has to offer! Family owned and operated, owner Xing Lin has done an extraordinary job of bringing his families’ recipes to life. “We want to share our love of food with the Carrollwood community,” says Xing. “We want to provide our customers with the best sushi experience.” Taking a look at the menu at Osaka, you are sure to be impressed. Offering so much more than just sushi

18

– although their sushi menu is absolutely fantastic – Osaka offers a fusion of Japanese-American masterpieces for every taste and palate. Quite often when you have a group of people, there are one or two guests who don’t like or have never tried sushi. Because of this, they strive to offer many options, so people in your party aren’t feeling left with only sushi to choose from. Xing says, “We are more than just a sushi restaurant. Yes, we do have exceptional sushi, but for those who are looking for something different we have a variety of other options, like steak and seafood. Our Pan Atlantic Salmon topped with mango salsa is really good, although my favorite is the Grilled New Zealand Lamb Chop.” However, after seeing some of the spectacular sushi rolls, even if you aren’t a fan of sushi I have a feeling you might change your mind. Osaka has so many different rolls to choose from, including those that even the pickiest of palates can enjoy! So even if you think you might not like sushi, I can almost guarantee you will find something that you’ll love. “The freshness of the food and only using quality ingredients is most

important,” says Xing. “Our chefs believe in the food they prepare. They don’t make anything that they themselves wouldn’t eat.” Seeing as how sushi is their specialty, I couldn’t leave without trying a couple rolls. Xing graciously had a few rolls prepared as I eagerly waited with anticipation. When the platter came out I was mesmerized. Featuring a

colorful array of three different sushi rolls - the Out of Control, Sexy Lady and White Hot - the presentation alone was incredible! The sushi looked almost too pretty to eat - almost! inside and seared white tuna on top, is sure to satisfy. A generously large portion size, each piece of the Sexy Lady Roll is almost too big to eat in one bite. This roll is characterized by the subtle sweetness of the mango, which is ac-

companied by lobster, asparagus, spicy tuna and avocado and perfectly complemented by the spicy mayo and mango sauce that is layered a top. Ignite your taste buds with an explosion of flavor as you take a bite of the Out of Control Roll, which combines tuna, yellowtail, salmon, avocado and asparagus on the inside before being topped w seared tuna, yellowtail, salmon, caviar and a spicy mayo citrus sauce and eel sauce. My favorite of the three, and one of the most popular rolls at Osaka, I highly recommend you try this roll on your

With Plans to Open Late Summer of 2016, Florida Hospital Center Ice Marks a New Era for Ice Sports in Tampa Bay! Living in Florida, there aren’t as many opportunities for those who wish to take up hockey or figure skating, but Florida Hospital Center Ice, an immaculate 150,500 square foot facility, is looking to change that. This year-round skating rink and multisports complex will offer an infinite amount of opportunities for those who wish to develop their skills both on and off the ice. “With Olympic and NHL-size rinks, this is where the players will come to play,” says co-owner Gordie Zimmermann of Z Mitch, LLC. “It’s where youngsters will learn, and where all ages can stay active and have fun.” Hoping to bring an increased awareness of hockey and figure skating to the state of Florida, Z Mitch, LLC,'s, Gordie Zimmermann and George Mitchell decided this area would be the perfect location! Teaming up with Florida Hospital, this impressive new training facility will be focused on sports performance, with a goal of producing top athletes that can compete at an elite level Nationwide. Gordie says, “There were a number of reasons why we chose this area. After the past few years of Lightning success we knew we wanted to do something in Tampa and this area is one of the new hot spots as far as the demographics. This complex has great visibility from the highways, and is easily accessible from all over Tampa Bay. This is going to be the biggest ice sports complex in the entire South East. There is nothing else like this in the Southern United States!” Florida Hospital, which will also have an office within the facility, will have staff on hand, and, working

alongside Center Ice staff, will offer unique sports performance programs for individuals and teams who want private training sessions and other specialized skill-training programs both on and off the ice. “Partnering with Florida Hospital, we have an increased focus on sports –related performance, injury prevention and wellness,” says Gordie. “This really changes the dynamics for athletic training. Our programs are going to be an enhancement in the world of sports and I think it is the key to making hockey players faster and figure skaters stronger. If you take a kid from three years old and give him or her the opportunity to become a top athlete, providing the right coaches, trainers and managers from a young age and all the way through to adulthood, the possibilities are endless.” As amazing as the sports complex will be, what it will do for the area is just as incredible – giving the quickly growing New Tampa/ Wesley Chapel area an unfathomable economic boost! From sports tournaments to top-notch athlete training, when this complex is completed, this will be the place where people from all across the country come to skate! “The community has just come together and rallied around this rink,” says Shari Trotter. “We have already had such great feedback. High-level competitive skaters are excited about the coaching and excited about what the rink has to offer. There really are very few complexes that have anything close to this; the size of this facility, along with the amenities, coaching and sports programs are going to be

top in the nation.” From free-skating to free throws, Florida Hospital Center Ice will be a Mecca for everything sports-related! A place where people from all across Tampa Bay can come together over their shared love of sports!

“Brunchies” Continued from page 1 Carrollwood to know Brunchies as a good brunch spot. A visitor from Arizona called Brunchies her go-to brunch spot when she’s in Tampa. Kranich said his quality of food and expansive menu separates him from other breakfast and lunch restaurants. He also has the ability to accommodate his guests’ gluten-free meal restrictions. “Pretty much anything on the menu we can make gluten-free,” said Kranich. “We also do gluten-free bread.” And when Kranich says “make,” he actually means make. Every tasty morsel is made by hand in the kitchen by the talented chefs who take pleasure in creating beautiful, delicious food. When asked if there were menu items that regulars would identify strictly as Brunchies’, Kranich said, “The Blueberry Crunch Cakes are our signature item.” This customer-favorite is a stack of homemade grilled granola pancakes topped with syrup and a dollop of whipped butter. Guests can even substitute organic wheat batter on any

A diet lovers’ dream, the three egg omelet is filled with fresh organic spinach, diced tomatoes, and crumbled feta cheese, paired with oven-roasted potatoes, and an English muffin. Guests have the option of substituting grits or fresh

tomatoes for the potatoes as well. A new addition to the extensive Brunchies menu and a favorite of Brunchies Manager and Kranich’s stepson Michael Klesyk, is their Guava Stuffed French Toast. In this delectable dish, guava cream cheese gets stuffed inside challah french toast coated in crushed corn flakes topped before being topped with fresh strawberries and slivered almonds.

“It’s really good. It’s something you don’t taste often. It’s a big portion, so come hungry,” Klesyk said. Kranich stressed that everything on the menu was made by hand in the restaurant. He said, “We do all our batters in house. We cure our own salmon, make our own corned beef hash and our own chorizo. I’ve seen our competitors, and when you have poor food quality coming in the back

They can also up the ante with Duck Bacon. The April menu will also feature carnitas, burritos, and a chimichurri steak and egg dish. Guests who frequently return to Brunchies can join their rewards program, receive a rewards card that earns a point for every dollar spent, and after 200 points, they’re eligible for a $10 rewards certificate. They can also enjoy a free entrée on their birthday. To join the rewards program,

many positive effects on your health, which is why they offer a great massage program to better enhance your own experience. The Benefits Program is LaVida Massage’s way of taking a service that is traditionally seen as the occasional, expensive luxury and making it easily accessible to people of all economic backgrounds, so they can make it part of their monthly routine. They developed this program because they truly believe in the profound effects a monthly massage can have on all aspects of your body, mind and life. So how does it work?
