Children’s Board Grant Funds New Programs For Sixth & Seventh Graders at Centre For Girls own turf on topics such as self image, fashion, peer and societal pressures – and equip them with critical thinking and self-empowerment skills. Perham said: “Our girls have helped to shape the series, and we have commitments to “export” Girls GLOW to other child-centered organizations, eager to host the series for their girls.” A newly launched state-of-the-art Cyber Lab will help girls improve their digital skills through digital classes, robotics and regular arts-based after school activities. The Centre for Girls is a program of The Helen Gordon Davis Centre for Women and has built in new resources for parents as well. Counseling and Wellness and Employment Services programs will offer services to parents and families onsite during times when the facility is not being used by girls. Clinical counseling services in English or Spanish will be available for adults, couples, children and teens, and families. The Centre has licensed, Master’s-level counselors

It’s full S.T.E.A.M. ahead for sixth and seventh graders at The Centre for Girls at 105 W. Sligh Ave., thanks to a two-year grant award totaling $309,000 from the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County. Kelley Parris, Executive Director of The Children’s Board said: “For more than a year, the Children's Board has been collecting community feedback, data, and anecdotal information to develop strategies to make investments that lead to positive outcomes for children in Hillsborough County. Our findings yielded considerable concerns especially as it related to lack of available out of school time activities. In fact, in 2014, only 8.92% of Hillsborough County children were enrolled in after school programs. The Children’s Board is pleased to provide funding for this program and increase availability of positive out of school time activities.” Ann W. Madsen, Executive Director of the Helen Gordon Davis Centre for Women, which operates The Centre for Girls said: “The grant makes it possible to broaden our arts and en-

richment programs for sixth and seventh graders to provide fun-infused programming especially designed for them. Through an innovative method of arts-integrated tutoring, we will use the arts to help girls improve reading and writing skills.” Centre for Girls Director Gabrielle Perham explained: “Our program is based on an evidencebased model which incorporates visual arts, drama, dance and music. Babysitting classes and water/home/fire safety classes will also be offered. “Our goal is to provide programs that teach skills to help girls develop a healthy understanding of themselves, others and the larger world. Providing a safe, vibrant learning space – especially for middle school girls – gives parents peace of mind. Parents will find us to be partners committed to their children’s healthy development both in and out of school.” The middle schoolers will be able to participate in Girls Glow, a 10-week series promoting healthy body image and self esteem. It is designed to approach middle school girls on their

Quest Self Defense - Intelligent Self Defense, Fitness, Meditation and Self Improvement predatory mentality, and a predator is not looking for a fight. A predator is looking for prey that they perceive as weaker than them. So if your system of self protection is based solely on being bigger, faster, or stronger, and you just happen to not be genetically bigger or stronger, then you are already in trouble.”

An exciting journey for the body, mind, and soul, at Quest Self Defense, they offer so much more than what their name implies! Meditation, life improvement, self-development, camaraderie, and motivation are all part of the program. Although, if it is self defense you seek, the masterfully trained instructors will teach you a variety of highly effective, highly useful ways to defend yourself against attackers who might be bigger, faster and stronger than you, while focusing on a reasonable, functional, and less extreme approach to fitness. Recently changing their name from Quest Martial Arts to Quest Self Defense as a way to differentiate themselves from those that offer MMA-style training, the name might sound familiar - they have been at the same location on Bruce B. Downs Blvd. in New Tampa for nearly 20 years. They have recently moved to a beautiful new facility in Wesley Chapel, behind the Mercedes-Benz dealership, at 2634 Cypress Ridge

Blvd. When you walk through the door it feels like old time Japan meets up-scale industrial modern age. “We are a life enhancing alternative to cage fighting and sport-martial arts,” says owner, Mark S. Russo, who founded Quest alongside wife Helen Russo. Basing their practice on Ninjutsu, an ancient Japanese form of self defense, Mark and Helen teach To-Shin Do, which is a modernized, practical form that’s more applicable to Westernized culture. The only studio of their kind in the state of Florida, Quest Self- Defense has students that travel from as far away as Gainesville, Orlando, Sarasota, and Miami to train with these globally recognized instructors. They have even had students that have purposely relocated to this area so that they could train at Quest Self-Defense. Master Russo says, “We teach very realistic self protection. It’s scientific and intelligent, as opposed to just relying on being bigger, stronger, faster or more athletic. When we are talking about self-defense, you are usually dealing with a

Mark Sentoshi Russo With over 50 years of experience in martial arts, and as an 8th degree black belt in To-Shin Do, Master Russo is the highest ranked To-Shin Do Senior Master in the world. He is recognized as the senior Kasumi-An To-Shin Do instructor and has studied martial arts from the age of eight. Mark is a personal friend and student of An-Shu Stephen K. Hayes, the Western Authority on Ninjutsu, and original founder of To-Shin Do, and has trained in Japan with the Grandmaster as well.

Helen Jotoshi Russo Helen Russo has spent 23 years under the direct guidance of her hus-

Helen and Mark Russo, owners of Quest Self Defense band, and is one of only two women in the world to hold the title of ToShin Do Master instructor. As a 6th degree black belt, aside from An-shu Rumiko Hayes, she is the highest ranking female Master Instructor in the world. Born in Nigeria and raised in Kent England, Jotoshi's charm and disarming air stand in stark contrast to her outstanding skills as a master martial artist. Having raised two children of her own, Jotoshi has an uncanny

ability to create rapport with children and encourage them to achieve new levels of excellence. Using their proven methods and techniques, at Quest Self-Defense they will help you identify your natural strengths and learn to use them effectively to defeat an attacker. For example, if you are a person of small stature they will teach you how to be sneaky and evasive; if you are bigger and stronger they will teach you how to hold your ground effectively. “Ultimately, as you assimilate the principles

New Tampa Lifestyles

of the art you make it your own. It is different than any other martial art on the planet,” says Mark “I’m almost 60 and I keep getting better at what I do. If your martial art is based on things such as flexibility, strength, and conventional speed, then the older you get, naturally these things are going to decline. With To-Shin Do you get better with age as you continue to refine the principles and secrets for overcoming superior speed and strength.” “We call this the ‘intelligent art’ because you have to understand why

you are doing what you are doing,” says Helen. “A lot of martial arts are just about being stronger and tougher. But that’s not the case with this art. Little women can defend themselves against big men, and the same with children. It’s about out-smarting your attacker, using superior body movements, body positions, dynamics and alignments. You don’t have to be in young or in shape. We have all different types of students from all different backgrounds. All walks of life come in here and love it! It’s challenging, but it’s fun!” But, as previously mentioned, Quest Self-Defense, is so much more than just a self-defense studio. They are a community. Students don’t just gain knowledge in how to defend themselves’ they also gain a sense of camaraderie, a place where you feel as though you belong. Students also learn valuable life lessons in how to better themselves on many different levels, whether that be spiritually, financially, intellectually, psychologically or emotionally, to become the best person they can be. Helen says, “It’s not just about self-defense, it’s about personal development; learning how to be a better person through martial arts and connecting with both others and yourself. The art is really fascinating. It’s hard to describe, until you get in here and do it it’s hard to imagine how much there is to gain!” Everything they teach you at Quest Self Defense is based upon the four elements of Nature: Earth, Water, Fire and Wind, each of which carries with it a strategy. The earth element, which is associated with power, is the part of us that wants to be in control, and emphasizes grounded movement. The water element, which is associated with knowledge, is the part of us that wants to know that what we believe is true, and emphasizes the use of effective angling. Fire, associated with energy and connectivity, is that part of us that seeks connection with other human beings, and emphasizes critical timing. Wind, associated with action, is the part of us that wants to be in service to something greater than ourselves, and emphasizes circular, evasive and redirecting movement. Each of us

has these energies as part of our peronalities to greater or lesser degrees. This program will help you to identify your natural strengths and weaknesses, and although you can never equalize out all four elements, will teach you how to maximize your natural strengths and minimize your weaknesses. You will learn to apply this knowledge in all areas of your life. Master Russo says, “What we teach far exceeds just defending yourself against a physical attack. Living in the United States, the probability that you are going to get physically attacked in the next 6 months is relatively slim. But, in the next 6 months you will most likely get verbally attacked, emotionally attacked, psychologically attacked, and financially attacked. With all of these things, the principles we teach you in how to defend yourself physically apply in all those areas of your life, because in most of those situations you can’t just bully your way out.” Instead, the instructors teach you how to deal with those issues with skill and strategy, and guide you in how to use your own personal strengths to achieve success. Quest Self Defense will be hosting an Open House on Saturday April 30 from 1:30pm until 4 p.m. with an optional FREE Introductory Class at 1:45 p.m. For the month of April, Quest Self-Defense is offering for only $19, the chance to come try out their studio for 2 weeks, allowing you to get the full experience before fully committing to one of their programs. Mark adds, “My favorite part about what I do is seeing people take control of their lives, becoming personally powerful and building the life they want for themselves. I love successful and happy people and love helping people become successful. If I can help create more happy and successful people, the world I have to live in becomes a better, happier place. This we call enlightened selfishness.” Quest Self-Defense is located at 2634 Cypress Ridge Blvd. in Wesley Chapel. For more information please call (813) 973-0144 or visit www.TampaQuestCenter.com.

Tampa Friendly Divorce – “A Friendly, Civil, Respectful Way” Divorce is never easy. Not only is it a huge change in your life, but it can also drain your family’s finances, take years to settle, and create friction and animosity among family members. Tampa Friendly Divorce offers couples a mediation process that can make your divorce as easy, painless, and inexpensive as possible. Located at 5111 Ehrlich Road, Tampa Friendly Divorce uses a two-mediator, team approach to save you time, money, and unneeded conflict. Along the way, Attorney Chris Shulman and Brenda Evans – both are Florida Supreme Court Certified Family, Circuit, and County Mediators – provide help to couples who want a divorce. They help them make decisions together in a way that meets their family’s needs, now, and in the future. “When two people are able to communicate, they are better off sitting together to make decisions about the future of their lives rather than letting a court decide,” says Brenda. “We provide a forum for mature, respectful conversations about issues that need to be decided when going through a divorce. We help couples set up a coparenting plan and determine child support. Our process is very proactive. Together, we develop a plan for the future and try to eliminate any foreseeable issues.” “Tampa Friendly Divorce empowers couples to make their own personal decisions,” says Chris. They strive to help couples develop a divorce plan both agree on, and if the couple agrees before the mediation process begins, Tampa Friendly Divorce attorneys will file all the necessary forms with the court so that

clients can ease into the next phase of their lives. “Going through a divorce was a journey I did not want to take and the horror stories I heard from several people caused a lot of anxiety,” says Tampa Friendly Divorce client C.D.C. “However, in working with Tampa Friendly Divorce I was able to work alongside a team of professionals that cared about both parties and helped us to think through issues that had the potential to cause both financial and emotional hardships had they not been addressed at that time. I am very grateful for their approach and have recommended them to others facing a similar situation.” One of the only Divorce Mediation services of its kind in Tampa, Co-founder and Attorney Chris Shulman recognized that there was a lack of this type of service for couples when he was going through his own divorce. Chris is a professional neutral with almost 20 years of experience. Between service as a mediator, arbitrator, hearing officer, and federalsector EEO complaint adjudicator, Chris has resolved or, in the case of mediation, helped the parties resolve, more than 4,200 matters. Chris may occasionally use humor to lighten tension, but he never takes lightly the importance each case holds for the people in the dispute. With over 25 years in business, Brenda Evans’ experience includes corporate award-winning recognition for repeated successful change management – helping lead people through difficult transitions. As a Florida Supreme Court Certified Family, Circuit, and County Mediator, she now leverages her award-winning skills to help Tampa Friendly Divorce

Style Matters With her bold and boisterous personality and unique, upbeat flair, once you meet master stylist Jacquie Caetano, you will instantly feel like you have been friends for years! With a quaint little salon in the La Branche suites, located in the plaza just behind Home Goods, at 18101 Highwoods Preserve Parkway, Jacquie prides herself on giving her clients quality customer service and exceptional quality hair. With over 31 years of experience, Jacquie has a style and personality that is equally matched by her creativity and skilled techniques for hair. Specializing in cuts, styles, and color, Jacquie has gone through extensive training and has mastered virtually every style, both new and old. Whether you want a vintage, classic, or modern look, Style Matters is your one stop shop! Walk-ins are always welcome, although Jacquie recommends you make an appointment to ensure she has adequate enough time to give you your desired look. While I was at the salon I had the pleasure of meeting Jennifer Cutcliff, a long time client of Jacquie’s. Jennifer, who used to live in Tampa, now lives in Pennsylvania, but still comes to Jacquie to get her hair cut and colored. She makes it a point to schedule her hair appointments with Jacquie when she comes to town to visit her daughter, who is currently attending the University of Tampa. She says, “I’ve been coming to Jacquie for over

15 years. She is awesome! Jacquie is really good at razor cutting. When she razor cuts my hair it drys in much less time and it falls better into place. My hair can’t function without razor cuts. Jacquie is the kind of stylist that you can just tell her to try something new and you don’t ever get nervous because you know she is going to do a fantastic job. I have done a lot of different hair styles over the years, from short, to long, to back to short again, and pretty much everything in between. She always makes me look great! She is the best!” Chances are if you have lived in New Tampa long enough, you are probably pretty familiar with Bostonian Hair Studio - one of the first hair salons to call New Tampa home. Jacquie’s father Joseph Caetano opened the Bostonian Hair Salon in 1988, and quickly developed a loyal group of clients. “We were the first salon in New Tampa,” says Jacquie. “I got the opportunity to do pretty much everyone’s hair in this area and have grown with my clients over the years.” A staple in the New Tampa community for over two decades, Bostonian Hair Salon sadly closed its doors in 2009, after 21 years of business. But, that didn’t stop Jacquie from doing what she loved, so she continued to do hair, renting out a studio in Seven Oaks. She has since moved locations, and her clients have happily followed, many of which have been with here since the very beginning. “I have clients who have been coming to me since 1988,” adds Jacquie.

Working at and managing such a successful, large salon definitely had it’s perks too. As a Redken Premier Salon, Jacquie has had a significant amount of training and education. Jacquie says, “We did so much Redken volume at Bostonian that we actually had stylists from the Redken Exchange in New York come and teach at our salon. Most stylists go to the Redken Exchange to get lessons; we got the top artists to come to us!” A true expert at razor cutting, if you are looking for a fabulous new cut that perfectly accentuates your features, and really characterizes your personality and lifestyle than come in and

book an appointment with Jacquie! “I am very picky about my haircutting technique,” says Jacquie. “I don’t just cut straight across, like most stylists. My technique is different than what I just learned in beauty school; it has evolved over the years and I have really managed to hone in on my razor cutting skills, which not a lot of hair dressers do. Most stylists use regular scissors and will only use a razor for texturizing benefits. I am not a basic cutter; I will do a complete hair cut using the razor. This ensures that the hair will fall soft, without looking bulky - which is a main concern among women.”

Master stylist Jacquie Caetano and her long time client Jennifer Cutcliff. Despite living in Pennsylvania now, Jennifer still gets her hair cut and colored by Jacquie whenever she’s in town!

Jacquie also does haircuts for girls as well. She does stress though, that this is not a basic kids cut. She says, “I don’t rush through kids cuts. I deliver the same attention, quality and expertise on a child as I do on an adult.” Personalized customer service is very important to Jacquie and she prides herself on giving her clients her full one-on-one attention each and every time. As a client of Jacquie’s she will never rush you out to work on the next client and will always give you the full attention you deserve. Jacquie is very good at listening to what her

clients want, and before she even touches their hair, she takes the time to find out about their lifestyle and exactly how much time each day they want to spend styling their hair, that way she can recommend the perfect haircut and style that can easily be maintained at home. Jacquie says, “When I have a new client who has never been here before, I always start with a nice consultation. I find out how they live, their lifestyle, and how much time they spend on their hair, because I don’t want to give them something they are never going to be able to achieve on their own. I will also give them a good lesson when I am drying their hair so they know exactly what to do at home. I have even offered my clients the opportunity to come back and get a blow dry lesson if they still can’t get the hang of it. I really care about my clients.” The perfect complement to accentuate your beautiful new hair style, Jacquie also has a nice selection of jewelry for purchase, which can be viewed in the display case at her salon. Jacquie is constantly attending jewelry shows, searching for unique pieces that she knows her clients will love. So, if you see something you love in the display case, don’t hesitate to buy it - many times those pieces are one-of-a-kind

and once their gone, their gone. "She gets really cute and trendy stuff,” adds client Jennifer. Getting your hair done should be a relaxing experience, and Jacquie’s salon provides the perfect little oasis to just sit back and unwind as your drift away in the salon chair. “It’s a more intimate atmosphere, and is great for those clients that don’t like a lot of commotion around them,” says Jacquie. “I put on whatever music you want and we can jam out and have fun.” Good for the month of April, Jacquie is offering all new clients her once-a-year $30 haircut, which is nearly 50% off her regular prices! So if you are ready to get a trendy, New York quality haircut, for almost half the price, than book an appointment with Jacquie and see the difference for yourself!

When asked the favorite part about what she does, Jacquie responded, “The satisfaction in seeing my clients’ reactions when they see the finished results. Especially when I really change up someone’s look, and their reaction and excitement when they look in the mirror, and maybe they didn’t think that they could have this; maybe some other hair dresser couldn’t do it… but I could!” Style Matters is located in the La Branche suites, located in the plaza just behind Home Goods, at 18101 Highwoods Preserve Parkway. Leads the Way in Hormone Pellet Therapy! By Alexis Selby Moving to a beautiful location just across Bearss Ave. at 3246 Cove Bend Dr, Tampa Rejuvenation is proud to unveil their fabulous new office, which features a bright and open lobby and the same welcoming staff and expert practitioners that made the old location so popular! Specializing in Bio-identical Hormone Therapy, Pellet Therapy, Testosterone Replacement Therapy and Medical Weight Loss, Tampa Rejuvenation is very well known in the area for their experienced team of professionals who pride themselves on helping patients of all ages to regulate their hormones and get back on track to a healthy lifestyle. A necessity to our body, hormones play a vital role in regulating our everyday lives and functions, from our mood to our appetite to our energy. As a result, when a hormonal imbalance occurs, it can have drastic negative effects, such as fatigue, weight gain, decreased sex drive, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, and irritability. Often, these symptoms are overlooked and contribute to aging. Many seek treatment with their Primary Care Providers and are given prescriptions for the symptoms they are experiencing, such as anti-anxiety medications, sleeping pills, anti-depressants or even Viagra. This only masks the symptoms. Tampa Rejuvenation treats the root of the problem instead of masking the symptoms.

-Releases hormones directly into the bloodstream, thereby bypassing the gastrointestinal system and liver -Proven more effective than oral, injected, or topical methods, with regard to sexual function, mood and cognitive function, metabolic function, bone density, urinary and vaginal problems, lipid profiles, breast health and hormone ratios -Placed superficially under the skin and above the muscle, the procedure is simple and virtually painless -Pellets last 4-6 months, which means you only need to have the procedure done 2-3 times a year -Because the pellets are implanted, you never have to remember to take the dose, which means you can worry about more important things in your life -Quick results, with patients experiencing positive effects and relief of their negative symptoms within weeks. Once the pellets are implanted, patients quickly begin to feel relief from their symptoms; their energy levels increase and they become more emotionally stable. All of the symptoms that brought you to needing hormone therapy will reside and a renewed sense of well-being and satisfaction is achieved.

In studies, when compared to conventional hormone replacement therapy, pellets have been shown to be extremely effective for relief of menopausal symptoms, maintenance of bone density, restoration of sleep patterns, improvement in sex drive, libido, sexual response and performance, relief of depression, anxiety, irritability, mood swings, and many others. Pellet implants have also been used to treat migraines and menstrual headaches, and can also help relieve vaginal dryness, incontinence and urinary urgency and frequency.

Hormone Therapy for Men

One of the many areas where Tampa Rejuvenation excels high above the competition is through their Hormone Pellet Therapy, a newly-advanced cutting edge approach that delivers a steady release of bio-identical hormones through the means of a pellet the size of a grain of rice that is surgically implanted superficially underneath the skin. Available since 1939, Hormone Pellet Therapy uses hormones derived from natural plant sources to replicate the body’s natural hormone levels. Pellet therapy helps men achieve the sustained level of testosterone that would be produced by normally functioning testicles. This form of therapy is the only kind that produces the natural level of hormones that men need. In addition, many studies show optimal testosterone levels in men - over 800 can have preventive effects for many disease states, such as cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, prostate cancer and osteoporosis. Patient Angelica writes, “My journey back to wellness started in July 2015 when I found Tampa Rejuvenation. I wasn’t motivated and was tired of feeling lousy every day. I was experiencing heartburn, acid reflux, obesity, irritability, moodiness, fatigue, lack of focus, lack of motivation, sleeplessness, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, low thyroid, low testosterone and low vitamin D. I was also at 41% body fat, which is considered morbidly obese. I initially started with the HCG diet and appetite suppressants to get the weight off. When I discovered my thyroid was low I started taking a natural prescription recommended by their doctor. On my next visit, Brett congratulated me on my results and said he would personally monitor my wellness and guide me through the rest of the way. From that day, my wellness has improved exponentially. He listened to my concerns and adjusted my HCG diet. He also mentioned my testosterone was low and asked me to

consider HRT (hormone replacement therapy). Probiotics and enzymes were also recommended - they definitely made a huge difference in helping with digestion. I initially started with testosterone shots but switched to the pellets recently, which have shown to be a better option for me. People always ask, “isn’t it expensive?” My response is… you either take care of your wellness on the front end or the back end. You either pay to be healthy and feel pure joy every day or pay after you get Type II Diabetes, Cancer or whatever else your poor eating habits and lifestyle have caused. I am 36 now, but I spent most of my twenties depressed. A lot of pain could have been avoided if I had this knowledge back then and this is why I choose to share my story today. I wasn’t born depressed. My poor eating habits and lifestyle choices caused my hormones to be out of whack, which caused all of my negative symptoms which in turn was labeled depression. Tampa Rejuvenation gave me my life back. They leveled out my hormones and taught me to eat healthy. So I urge you to take charge of your wellness. Educate yourself so you can make an informed decision and stop making excuses. Get over your fear of failure and make the commitment to

get healthy. Your happiness depends on it. I AM LIVING PROOF!” Despite all the positive advantages of Hormone Pellet Therapy, Tampa Rejuvenation founder Brett Markowitz knows there are always going to be concerns, so he would like to address your fears and help reassure you that at Tampa Rejuvenation you are in good hands. “Its really important to address peoples’ fears,” says Brett. “I think so many people try to push the advantages and the reality is, many times it’s the patient’s fears that are holding them back. One fear people have with doing hormones is that it’s going to give them cancer. And even though pellets are bio-identical, they are still a hormone. We take a very pro-active approach and focus on prevention. We always have a physician on staff and do regular blood work, as well as follow-up and monitoring. Under the right supervision and by understanding each patient’s health history, hormone replacement therapy can be made safe. Another major concern amongst patients is “what if I get the wrong dose?” This is why it is so important to have a doctor with longevity in the use of pellet therapy which we have- because you want to make sure each patient is given exactly

the right dose. We have very welltrained practitioners that will supervise each patient and monitor their progress from beginning to end.” Some people have been living with hormone deficiencies for so long that they don’t even remember what it’s like to feel normal. Don’t be one of those people. Don’t let hormonal imbalance hold you back from living life to the fullest!
